[Q] bricked defy? - Defy General

hey, guys! i was trying to install cm7 on my defy. I had the UK 3.4.3-11 fw on it before, and tried to flash cm6 with rom manager, checked wipe and backup. It backed up my previous rom, but then it rebooted, and now all I see is the notification bar, and a black screen with the text "set-up" on top of it. The touchscreen works (accelerometer too), and the buttons vibrate when pressed but don't do anything else. I tried to flash a new sbf with rsd lite 4.9, and it showed my phone, but couldn't flash anything, because I couldn't press the start button. Any help, please?

I bricked another phone after installing clockwrok mod, it would even boot and I couldn't flash any ROM anymore. Fortunately the shop replaced it under warranty.
On the Defy I used the files posted on this forum and it worked fine.

mine boots. and where are the files posted?

Which sbf did u try and flash?
Sent from my MB525 using XDA App

i tried two. 2.51.1 and 3.4.3-11, both uk and blurred. none of them worked. btw, the 3.4.3-11 was the one i was using before, don't know if it matters or not.

ok, turns out i can receive texts and calls, and do anything that shows in the notification area. i just can't get back to my homescreen, or get the menu to show. worst thing, i can't get to settings, because afaik i need usb debugging to be enabled to flash an sbf, don't i?

Oh okay I was thinking it was a downgradibility issue, but apparently not. Similar thing happened to me and I just kept trying different ROMS And eventually one worked
Sent from my cyanogenmod 7 defy

I dont think its a problem with the roms i wanted to flash, because whatever i did, rsd lite didn't allow me to start to flash.

I had 3.4.3-11 before. After that I tried the nordic ROM and using it I installed 2ndinit and then CM7. I meant the files in first posts these threads:

turns out there's only one sbf i can flash (uk blurred 2.51.1), but when i did, it totally bricked the phone. now it doesn't even boot, the screen remains black, and the notification led doesn't show anything. the pc recognizes it, but the only thing i can do is reflash the same sbf which bricked it... any chance if i bring it back they'll give me a new one?

Im in a similar situation now as well. All im getting is a notification bar and black screen. I was on some chinese rom running jboogies deblurhoney for a while and tried going back stock. Now im trying a bunch of roms with no solution. Ive tried 2 different tmobile us roms, and one orange rom. No success as of yet.

When I first got my defy I tried to restore a nandroid and bricked my phone anyways what i ended doing since the phone would turn on but the screen would be all black my best option was just to flash anything that was 2.51 so u can try to download any of the newer released sbf or just try and find your original firmware
EDIT: just make sure to wipe data/cache before flashing

Check the results from the thread I recently made
(my solution was to go into the stock recovery and do a factory wipe)

i can't go into recovery, nor the bootloader, the phone wouldn't start. my computer wouldn't recognize it anymore, so all i've got now is a pretty expensive beermat... i think the last sbf which i flashed is a UK 2.51.1, will motorola buy that their official upgrade software screwed the phone up?

That's what I said because luckily an official update came out. I was another brand though.

You could try flashing it with nordic sbf.
I will send you the link as a PM.
I had the same problem, and it worked for me.

I am having an issue with my phone as well. I had it rooted with clockworkmod. I tried to install CM7 Beta 3 and it failed installation at line 7. So I did a wipe and factory reset and did a backup of my last Nandroid and now it just blinks the Motorloa symbol and I and do nothing.

Same thing happened to me just that I sped through too many things and didn't take my time to read more threads. Right now all I can get to is a boot loop of the motorola sign. Rooted the phone, had a recovery installed but neglected to realize that i needed to install a 2.2 rom before going to cm7. Need help!!!

[Q] Defy not starting after flash SBF - Bricked?

Hi there, I'm having some trouble flashing my Defy. Here's what happened:
1) Bought my phone today. Installed a couple of apps (Foursquare, Twitter client, 1 or 2 others).
2) Rooted, then installed 2nd Init. Reboot twice, 2nd Init was working fine, I was able to get into ClockWorkMod Recovery with no trouble.
3) The main reason I wanted to flash a new ROM was to record videos at 720p, using Hancock's ROM 720p port. So, decided to get Barebones v1.5.
4) In the thread, it says: "If Your Coming From An Eclair Build Please Flash The Korean sbf, 3.4.2_74-Stock.KR_BLUR.sbf, Beforehand"
5) Downloaded and flashed the SBF using RSD Lite (already had Motorola's drivers and Android SDK installed, so no trouble here, too).
6) Flash the mentioned SBF with apparently no issues. But, when RSD reboots the phone, it simply shows nothing on the screen, nor does the screen light turns on. It looks like the phone is off, it simply does not boot.
7) When plugged to PC, RSD still recognizes the phone. Tried to flash the SBF again, with the same results (when RSD is flashing the SBF, the screen turns on with the "FW Update - In progress" message). RSD is still recognizing my phone, so I'm still able to flash SBFs.
So, what should I do? It looks like my phone is in bootloader (since RSD is recognizing the phone), but with screen/screen lights off. Should I try another SBF? Is my phone bricked? Thanks for your help!
P.S.: Some useful information: I'm not new to the ROM Flashing universe. Had been flashing my phones since I had a SonyEricsson K550i, at late 2008. Already flashed some ROMs to my HTC Magic, but it has none of these downgrade-locks or any stuff like these. So, I'm completely able to follow instructions on ROM/SBF/whatever flashing, and I'm 100% sure I followed all the instructions correctly.
I am facing the same situation after i flashed my defy to 3.4.2-155 deblur: I try to flash it back to China retail version, which is its original rom, but it happened the same thing, black screen, even RSD cannot recognize. The thing i do is flash the 3.4.2-155 twice, though mine cannotbe flashed back, but it is no longer brick now. Hope my experience could help.

Thanks for sharing, bro. Got the situation under control here, just flashed an american SBF and got things working. I think I just got a corrupt download or something like this.
on tinhte.vn, in my country Vietnam. Google search
"It's cause of the update a couple of weeks ago. You just need to find the leaked 2.2 t-mobile sbf. Flash that with rsd lite and it will boot right up. Just google leaked 2.2 defy sbf and you should find it. Make sure you extract it and point rsd lite at the actual sbf file and after about 10min. All will be well. "

Thanks, man, already solved my problem flashing a different SBF. Now I'm up and running on Barebones v1.5 with 720p video recording
In case of stuck in startup
try
Pull battery,
put battery back in holding the VOL-Down until the android pops up...
press VOL-Up and VOL-Down at the same time.
Next screen is for wiping and updating.

hy..can you please post some screenshots on barebones..thx
I've tried several sbf now. But no one works. RSD lite shows "finished" and "pass", but the Defy stays dark. No reaction on pushing the power-button. only rds lite still recognizes it. any ideas?
The only sbf that works for my Defy is the following one for Defy+ http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1385868
This means you have flashed a SBF that is not allowing a direct downgrade (flashing another SBF with wrong CG codes => Defy won't boot). Unfortunately at the moment there is no workaround to go back to Froyo or other GB versions that have CG31,CG35,CG39 code lower than 6 and CG47 lower than 3.
This happens wen users are not paying attention to warning messages.
Have you wipe DATA/cache before flash the SBF?
Use the latest driver and RSD.

Can't get Defy to update :(

Hi, I got my Defy about 4 months ago. I rooted it and installed Titanium Backup and deleted a bunch of "useless" apps. Or so I thought. Since the T-Mobile update 3.6.360 came out, I've been trying to update, but it always get stuck and gives me a yellow exclamation mark halfway through updating.
I've installed clockwork recovery mod but haven't been able to get it to its original settings so I can run the official update. Can someone please help me out or link me to an original T-Mobile US ROM so I can get the phone to its original settings?
I've been trying to get it to work for months now, it's really frustrating having to deal with that stupid popup reminding me to update my phone everytime I unlock it haha
THANK YOU!!
you could flash the tmobile US firmware from here: http://and-developers.com/sbf:defy
it could brick your phone, ive bricked mine once before with an sbf from here, but it was pretty easily recovered
I have flashed the above mentioned 3.6.360 sbf from and-developers SEVERAL times it works great just ALWAYS wipe before flashing sbf.
yeah forgot to mention that, go into stock recovery (vol down + pwr on boot, then vol down + up when the android appears) and wipe data/factory reset, Then flash the ROM i mentioned
You, sirs, are awesome! I couldn't get clockworksmod to work for some reason so I couldn't delete everything, but flashing it with the sbf worked, and i then updated to 3.6.360. THANK YOU!

[Q] defy bricked - can't get in recovery mode

first, excuse me for the english. ok, i installed the cyanogenmod and then i wiped the memory and the cash because i wanted to give the defy to other person.
so i installed the cyanogenmod from the card - the stable version or something similar - and that was all. the phone get stuck on the motorola logo, and can't get in recovery mode, only have the bootloader, and tried to install different ROMs, but the result is always the same - it can't boot and get stuck on the logo.
anyone can help me, please?
i did have the same did u soulve that proplem man !?
nope, i'm trying almost every advice that i can find in the net, but still no results.
hopefuly someone here can help to solve this issue.
What is the EXACT ROM you flashed at first, and what are the others you tried flashing?
Can you get to stock recovery?
Go into bootloader, plug in your phone, use rsd lite to flash an .sbf.
Edit-
If its stuck still, try now to enter recovery, clear cache, then factory reset. Happened to me when i tried to install CM7 from stock 2.2
this should get it stock again.

@iYossi i flashed JRDNEM_U3_3.4.2_177-005_NORDIC_SIGN_SIGNED_UCAJRDNEMARAB1B80AA03A.0R_PDS03C_USAJRDNFRYORTNORD_P003_A001_HWp3_Service1FF then i tried the same and few others.
and no, i can't get to stock recovery i have access only to the bootloader. when i flash a ROM with RSD (the latest version) it get fine until the moment it tries to boot, then the RSD tell me that i have to boot the phone manualy and then it stuck and go to nowhere
@dyinghero27 i can't enter into recovery.
No, not recovery, load bootloader, flash with the newest stock sbf (think I seen 3.4.4 in Dev forum)
Edit* just like I suspected, I'm pretty sure your having problems with downgrading, you need to flash the newest sbf.

I have the same problem, if I put the battery in a cel from a friend and let's take a charge, until I make time for the 2.2, then I put it loads to 2.2 in normal outlet ....
but I'm still the problem with the Motorola logo, so I can enter the bootloader, I can not get into recovery, do not know what to do ...
sorry for bad english
so i installed a lot of different versions on the defy and the result is the same, the phone get' stuck on the motorola logo. can anyone help me, please?
ok i tried a version that seems to work but now the display doesn't start. i have the defy connexted via usb and when i push the power button it connect/disconnect to the pc but the display remains off.
why i think that this version seems to work? because when i flash it to the defy it reboot the phone and says pass. the other versions stucks on reboot and the RSD says that i have to reboot manualy but the phone stucks on the motorola logo.
anyone have an idea, why the display is off. when i try to flash the phone i have no problems.
Err

Hmm, sure you have the right sbf and it didn't corrupt in download? Also do you gave the latest Motorola drivers, if so even uninstalling and reinstalling them might help. The other thing I can think of is a virus or an antivirus that could be interfering?
Sent from my DROID2 using xda premium
i´m not sure if i have installed the right sbf, because i tried various and only this one seems to work ... partly. the others stuck on the motorola logo when RSD try to restart them, after the install. i suspect that this has to do with my empty battery.
i´ve cutted an usb cable and connected the red and the black wire directly to the pins, because i had the "the battery is low ... cannot program" problem, but i'm not sure if this is sufficient to get it back again.

[Q] boot loop/black screen tries almost all SBFs

Hi,
i had cyanogen 7 on my phone, and did one of the noob's mistakes of installing the 2ndinit (where the bootmenu is already installed).
it didnt even seem to install it (it said "failed"), but then i rebooted, and there you go- boot loop.
so i was calm since i've already faced boot loop with another defy, i started flashing an SBF using RSD lite 4.9.
every service flash i tried didnt work, it either-
said "please manually reboot the phone"- followed by a boot loop,
or
said "PASS", but then there was black screen with no booloader option.
then i moved to RSD lite 5, then 5.3.1- nothing works...
i read all the boot loop related threads in the defy, but i cant see anyone with the same problem of boot looping no matter which rom and which RSD lite version...
please help me!
Go to stock recovery after the sbf and wipe data/cache. With the Phone off press VOLUME DOWN then, while still pressed, power up the phone and leave VOL key pressed until you see a Yellow triangle, once you see this you are in Recovery now press Vol Up and Vol Down at the same time (if you are in Froyo) and the menu will appear.
Edit:
Don't worry about the please manually reboot the phone instead of PASS. Happens a lot.
Also, I send a PM to total defy guide to add this.
Updated the Guide
I actually got this same issue myself.
Found the culprit was the SD Card, if you dont do a full wipe (Data/Cache) using Stock Recovery some files remain on the SD Card that prevents Android from booting correctly.
that makes sense,
thank you so much for the quick response!
the thing is currently the only response i'm getting from the phone is the white led when connecting to the PC, meaning vol up,down, or power don't do anything...
I, myself am in a loop, tried so many SBF, some brought me to the not responding state, and some to the boot loop state.
i'm currently stuck in the "not responding" state,
so i'll try to get back to the boot loop state and follow your directions.
i didn't know i can reach the stock recovery that way...
tell me- i have another defy, do you think i can use it's SD card in this defy or is it too risky...?
Just put your defy in your pc. If the let is white let it rest for a while so you won't run out of power when you flash. then open rsd lite and flash a froyo sbf (I hope you didn't flash an 2.3.x gingerbread sbf). Let the phone power up for +- 10 min. If it isn't powered up by then, or you see the boot animation then black and again the animation, you have to wipe data and cache in stock recovery.
This isn't CWM recovery that is used to install CM. Only use this recovery for this occasion. If you have flashed an 2.3.x sbf, you will only see the motorola sign when you power up your phone and the wipe won't helpe. Then go to the defy beginners guide of Zephyrot and follow the instructions there.
mmm, it does look like you flashed a Full Gingerbread SBF.
If any Eclair/Froyo SBF is giving you blackscreens even after a fullwipe with stock recovery, after a full Stock SBF flash; is because you are probably on CG v5, meaning you flashed a Gingerbread SBF .
If there is no way for you to recover the phone using Froyo/Eclair SBFs, go to the Guide and search the part on how to Downgrade from Official GB to a Froyo rom, and then how to go from there to CM7.
Last part just got added,
Good luck
i did try gigerbread, and i think from there on it got worse...
I cant reach stock recovery now since the phone is not responding...
isnt there any way to wipe using the RSD lite or maybe some other program which will recognize my device...?
ADB of course does not see it...
the thing is the RSD keeps saying "PASS" each time, so i unplug it, but then it wont power up...
are you saying i should leave it plugged for a while although the RSD says it's complete, or do you think i whould unplug it, and hold the power button for a long time...?
Man, if you tried Gingerbread, you dont have many options.
Please read the Guide completely before running out of battery, and then do the last part that explains how to recover your problem.
I'm a woman, but that's ok
so i've followed your instructions from 1 to 9,
last step was deleting the data and cache, then rebooting (using "reboot system now" in the bootmenu),
but it keeps going back to the bootmenu...
I don't want to do any foolish mistakes now, so i'll wait for you reply-
can i install the MIUI zip already...? is it safe?
i'm shutting down the phone now, and waiting for you...
you have no idea how much you've helped until now,
thanks!
in bootmenu go to boot-->then choose either 2nd init or stock cant remember but one of them should boot and not get stuck

Oops! sorry had no idea!
It defaults to Bootmenu unless you specify it not to do so.
In bootmenu you should have an option to either make 2nd-init or Stock your default Boot.
Choose 2nd-init and reboot, you should be good to go
First boot into normal Froyo charge battery to 100% and then try MIUI.
I dont know if it will work tho! I added yesterday a new Part to the Guide to install CM7 after a full GB SBF has been flashed.
Its really really hard to kill a Defy, so dont worry too much if you run out of battery there's a McGyver way to charge it too.
I had the eternal bootloop issue as well, I just fixed doing all wipes necessary before installing any kind of rom
well, i didnt want to wait, since i was afraid leaving it in bootmenu would run the battery out, and taking the battery out was a risk too...
so i decided to flash the MIUI before even booting into the froyo i just flashed (the one using the fixed SBF you posted...)
and it worked, and i'm happy with my beautifull rom
oh about the battery charging- i have 2 defys, so no Mcgyver for me...
anyway, Zephyrot, i liked your guide,
i think it's very well written,
i only have one question for future knowledge-
in the state of having the Eclair V5, why is it impossible to flash the MIUI/CM7 straight from that point...?
thanks again,
Elinor.

Well, I first thought it would work, but it doesnt. Another user had the issue and he got stuck into bootloop after installing CM7 zip. It has to do with 2nd-init and the way you have to trick the phone to load an Eclair/Froyo Android while having a V5 CG.
It seems it works only with the goAPK Recovery or the old 1.4.2 2nd-Init.
now google apps not responding
Hi again,
after problem was solved, i installed some applications, and at some point, all google applications seemed to stop working, including the market.
for example when hitting settings->accounts, it says: "the application settings (process com.android.settings) has stopped unexpectedly. please try again"
so i started over with the full SBF in your tutorial (wiped data, cache, dalvik)
and even with this rom, you can't use any google apps...
i've been searching for threads on this issue, but all i could find was "do factory reset", which i did, and it didn't help...
can you think of what could cause this?
it seems like some basic files are missing...
thanks!

HELP!!! Flashed with many SBF files yet still stuck on M Logo

Hello,
I read most of the threads on this very topic and I can't seem to find the answer so please don't yell at me for starting a new one. Most of the people had their problems solved in those threads with one of SBF files but I can't seem to find any that can boot my defy.
I have tried to flash my defy with 8 different SBF files but still am stuck on M logo, which is sometimes white and sometimes Red with different SBF files. My original defy was froyo based and it had white M logo (hoping this info may help somehow).
I cannot get my defy to boot with any SBF that i tried. I am in Pakistan and I couldn't see any defy files for Pakistan. my bootloader is 09.10 and RSD recognize my phone as S Flash OMAP 3630.
Can anyone please tell me if there is a SBF file that can boot my defy or atleast allow me to access my recovery mode so I can restore my original froyo version? I tried many times but I can only access bootloader and not the recovery mode.
I am also doing all of the flashing with my SIM card inside the phone, is that correct way or am I making a mistake doing it this way?
Is there a universal basic SBF file that can flash every defy no matter which region it belongs? I would love if such a SBF exists.
I would really really appreciate any help,
I think the sea 15 sbf should work here is the link forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1093352
Just follow simple instruction..
If you instal any ROM from gb kernel than it will be hard for you to get back to 2.2.2 if you hadn't flashed a proper fixed sbf i have bad English
Thanks, I will give this one a shot and let you know if it worked or not.
PS my Defy has a T-Mobile logo (US company) on it at the back, does all Defy models even sold in like India has those? and what does that mean for my Defy?
What sbf have you flashed so far....
For ur region sea 15 I'd recommended...
After flashing sbf I'd u get boot loop goto stock recovery and wipe the data...
Make sure u don't flash ginger bread sbf...
Sent from my MB525 using xda premium
Where did you got your defy? Is it having blur or is it the de blur version? In India I think all defy are with motorola logo at back with sea 15 sbf version
I purchased mine from a local company that sells all sort of cell phones. But, I am not sure where they purchase their phones. My Defy indeed had Motorola Blur and T-mobile logo at the back. Thats why i flashed my Defy with US and UK variants of SBF files listed here:
and-developers.com/sbf:defy
I also tried chinese and Nordic versions with no luck at boot. Even if I somehow can access my recovery mode I can atleast go back to my original defy by doing factory reset and resorting it to the way it came in.
Ok I tried the sea 15 sbf along with the Chinese Eclair sbf that people put after putting in gingerbread for going back. Yet i am still stuck in logo M. I cannot get into boot recovery mode at all, I tried everything but I can only access the BootLoader and not Boot Recovery.
Please tell me How can i access boot recovery so I can wipe everything and do factory reset and get my defy back to life.
I had the same problem and it was really funny. I had Defy Retail CEE with Android 2.1 and next Official Froyo 2.2 CEE too. I was selling it few weeks ago and needed to wipe phone, I wiped data and cache and after this phone stuck on Moto logo. I was trying every sbf. for Europe starting from early versions of Eclair ending on official Froyo and nothing. After this I just removed memory card and wipe data/cache and phone turns on on stock Froyo. Memory card wasn't damaged cause i was using it with this phone and was ok but it just can't boot first time with this card inside. Next boot was ok with card inside.
