Hi,
i had cyanogen 7 on my phone, and did one of the noob's mistakes of installing the 2ndinit (where the bootmenu is already installed).
it didnt even seem to install it (it said "failed"), but then i rebooted, and there you go- boot loop.
so i was calm since i've already faced boot loop with another defy, i started flashing an SBF using RSD lite 4.9.
every service flash i tried didnt work, it either-
said "please manually reboot the phone"- followed by a boot loop,
or
said "PASS", but then there was black screen with no booloader option.
then i moved to RSD lite 5, then 5.3.1- nothing works...
i read all the boot loop related threads in the defy, but i cant see anyone with the same problem of boot looping no matter which rom and which RSD lite version...
please help me!
Go to stock recovery after the sbf and wipe data/cache. With the Phone off press VOLUME DOWN then, while still pressed, power up the phone and leave VOL key pressed until you see a Yellow triangle, once you see this you are in Recovery now press Vol Up and Vol Down at the same time (if you are in Froyo) and the menu will appear.
Edit:
Don't worry about the please manually reboot the phone instead of PASS. Happens a lot.
Also, I send a PM to total defy guide to add this.
Updated the Guide
I actually got this same issue myself.
Found the culprit was the SD Card, if you dont do a full wipe (Data/Cache) using Stock Recovery some files remain on the SD Card that prevents Android from booting correctly.
that makes sense,
thank you so much for the quick response!
the thing is currently the only response i'm getting from the phone is the white led when connecting to the PC, meaning vol up,down, or power don't do anything...
I, myself am in a loop, tried so many SBF, some brought me to the not responding state, and some to the boot loop state.
i'm currently stuck in the "not responding" state,
so i'll try to get back to the boot loop state and follow your directions.
i didn't know i can reach the stock recovery that way...
tell me- i have another defy, do you think i can use it's SD card in this defy or is it too risky...?
Just put your defy in your pc. If the let is white let it rest for a while so you won't run out of power when you flash. then open rsd lite and flash a froyo sbf (I hope you didn't flash an 2.3.x gingerbread sbf). Let the phone power up for +- 10 min. If it isn't powered up by then, or you see the boot animation then black and again the animation, you have to wipe data and cache in stock recovery.
This isn't CWM recovery that is used to install CM. Only use this recovery for this occasion. If you have flashed an 2.3.x sbf, you will only see the motorola sign when you power up your phone and the wipe won't helpe. Then go to the defy beginners guide of Zephyrot and follow the instructions there.
mmm, it does look like you flashed a Full Gingerbread SBF.
If any Eclair/Froyo SBF is giving you blackscreens even after a fullwipe with stock recovery, after a full Stock SBF flash; is because you are probably on CG v5, meaning you flashed a Gingerbread SBF .
If there is no way for you to recover the phone using Froyo/Eclair SBFs, go to the Guide and search the part on how to Downgrade from Official GB to a Froyo rom, and then how to go from there to CM7.
Last part just got added,
Good luck
i did try gigerbread, and i think from there on it got worse...
I cant reach stock recovery now since the phone is not responding...
isnt there any way to wipe using the RSD lite or maybe some other program which will recognize my device...?
ADB of course does not see it...
the thing is the RSD keeps saying "PASS" each time, so i unplug it, but then it wont power up...
are you saying i should leave it plugged for a while although the RSD says it's complete, or do you think i whould unplug it, and hold the power button for a long time...?
Man, if you tried Gingerbread, you dont have many options.
Please read the Guide completely before running out of battery, and then do the last part that explains how to recover your problem.
I'm a woman, but that's ok
so i've followed your instructions from 1 to 9,
last step was deleting the data and cache, then rebooting (using "reboot system now" in the bootmenu),
but it keeps going back to the bootmenu...
I don't want to do any foolish mistakes now, so i'll wait for you reply-
can i install the MIUI zip already...? is it safe?
i'm shutting down the phone now, and waiting for you...
you have no idea how much you've helped until now,
thanks!
in bootmenu go to boot-->then choose either 2nd init or stock cant remember but one of them should boot and not get stuck

Oops! sorry had no idea!
It defaults to Bootmenu unless you specify it not to do so.
In bootmenu you should have an option to either make 2nd-init or Stock your default Boot.
Choose 2nd-init and reboot, you should be good to go
First boot into normal Froyo charge battery to 100% and then try MIUI.
I dont know if it will work tho! I added yesterday a new Part to the Guide to install CM7 after a full GB SBF has been flashed.
Its really really hard to kill a Defy, so dont worry too much if you run out of battery there's a McGyver way to charge it too.
I had the eternal bootloop issue as well, I just fixed doing all wipes necessary before installing any kind of rom
well, i didnt want to wait, since i was afraid leaving it in bootmenu would run the battery out, and taking the battery out was a risk too...
so i decided to flash the MIUI before even booting into the froyo i just flashed (the one using the fixed SBF you posted...)
and it worked, and i'm happy with my beautifull rom
oh about the battery charging- i have 2 defys, so no Mcgyver for me...
anyway, Zephyrot, i liked your guide,
i think it's very well written,
i only have one question for future knowledge-
in the state of having the Eclair V5, why is it impossible to flash the MIUI/CM7 straight from that point...?
thanks again,
Elinor.

Well, I first thought it would work, but it doesnt. Another user had the issue and he got stuck into bootloop after installing CM7 zip. It has to do with 2nd-init and the way you have to trick the phone to load an Eclair/Froyo Android while having a V5 CG.
It seems it works only with the goAPK Recovery or the old 1.4.2 2nd-Init.
now google apps not responding
Hi again,
after problem was solved, i installed some applications, and at some point, all google applications seemed to stop working, including the market.
for example when hitting settings->accounts, it says: "the application settings (process com.android.settings) has stopped unexpectedly. please try again"
so i started over with the full SBF in your tutorial (wiped data, cache, dalvik)
and even with this rom, you can't use any google apps...
i've been searching for threads on this issue, but all i could find was "do factory reset", which i did, and it didn't help...
can you think of what could cause this?
it seems like some basic files are missing...
thanks!

I walked my friend through rooting and helped him flash a custom rom. Then he decided he wanted CM7. So he booted into recovery and deleted cache, etc, flashed CM7. Now he is stuck at the Motoblur sign in page. He has tried resetting password and creating a new account, all to no avail. He has service and has even tried while connecting to wifi. When he boots into recovery he gets the stock recovery screen so he can't flash an unsigned ROM. I am okay with ADB and Fastboot, so any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
Anything specific to the Defy, please go easy on me. I use an HTC Thunderbolt. =D

Then we have a bigger problem because after flashing the cm7, we are stuck on the motoblur login/setup screen and he has only stock recovery...
did you follow a guide in flashing cm7? what are the steps you did to arrive in this? you can skip motoblur set up, or you are refering to moto logo(bootloop)?
it's bull****..
after you install cm7, there is no motoblur setup at all,
even after you wipe your data and cache.
what are you talking about man?

No guide in flashing. I am a crack flasher for my phone, so I knew how to flash correctly. He had a zip that he claimed was CM7. The name matched. He put it on his phone and cleared the cache/factory reset/etc, before flashing. Flash seemed to work. Then he booted the phone up and he is stuck at the MOTOBLUR setup page. He has tried his hardest and CANNOT skip past it. He is not bootlooping, either. I am an advanced rooter, so feel free to get a bit technical if you know what is going on. I can't reach the phone through ADB/SDK because I can't turn on USB debugging. The recovery mode has reverted to stock, and as you know, the bootloader is locked down... Do you think a bad flash could have caused this? I'm really at a loss. Would the wisest course of action be to start the whole thing over again by putting the stock rom on the SD as update.zip and flashing stock?

thanks for being rude.
i personaly agree with mlkz, there's no motoblur setup.
and there is a effing page of FAQ installing CM7 for Defy.
and no whatsoever things related to motoblur setup!
my guess, your friend have a wrong step of installing CM7.
i know you are not defy user, so maybe it be little bit different.
defy cm7 only can be installed with something called bootmenu.
bootmenu consist of:
-special custom recovery, built for defy
-2nd Init boot, to trick motorola's locked bootloader
installing CM7 ONLY can be done inside that bootmenu,
can't be installed on other defy custom recovery, because there's a lot defy custom recovery out there.
remember, only on that bootmenu custom recovery, because there is 2nd init there.
i will sum up the too detailed faq for you,
since you are well known advanced rooters you should know these steps.
first thing first, just because now your friend stuck on motoblur setup.
create motoblur account then,
or simply reflash defy with full SBF which doesn't have motoblur, i prefer to do this.
basic knowledge of motorola android phone: SBF is official flashing package from motorola.
USE nordic froyo SBF for best result.
how to flash full sbf properly:
-turn off the phone,
-wipe data and cache first from stock recovery (MUST DO)
and this is how to go to stock recovery:
press and HOLD vol.down + power, until android guy with exclamation mark appears
press vol.up+vol.down, to get the menu appears, if this can't be done, tap lower right corner of screen.
-wipe data then wipe cache
-reboot phone now, BUT IMMEDIATELY press and HOLD vol.up for about 5 seconds, then release.
-now you are on bootloader mode
-connect usb to computer, make sure drivers and rsd lite installed. driver for 32 bit, driver for 64 bit.
-open rsd lite, flash nordic froyo sbf
after new fresh froyo without motoblur are set up,
-turn on usb debugging, get root with gingerbreak 1.2, reboot
-with usb debugging still turn on, then install bootmenu with bootmenu installer 1.7 (do not use 1.8), reboot
-you should ended up automaticaly on bootmenu now
-on that bootmenu, select custom recovery options, do wipe data & cache.
-then install cm7 zip.
-then install gapps
-select reboot system now, all done!
after this,
tell your friend to read the faq before installing cm7 again next time.

+1,
nicely done mate..

Honestly? Impossible. SBF files replace ALL the phone's ROM files (and RSD Lite formats the ROM partition before doing so), so, if you flash a deblurred SBF (like the Nordic Froyo), it WILL NOT load a BLUR setup simply because the BLUR's setup files ARE NOT THERE.
So, unless, your friend's phone is a new Defy model with a fake ROM partition to piss off developers (besides the kidding, I won't be surprised if Motorola actually do this someday), there are two possibilities: 1) You did something wrong; or 2) You're lying.
Make sure that: 1) You wipe BOTH /data and /cache via stock recovery; and 2) You're flashing a deblurred SBF.
Here you can find ****loads of ROMs (complete index of Defy's SBFs), make sure you're getting a deblurred ROM, flash it in bootloader mode, using RSD Lite. There is no way to miss: in a deblurred ROM, there are no files who could lead to a BLUR setup.
hmm, if you flash cm7 the first thing you get is the Google Account Setup.
Perhaps you mixed something up and thought it is the motoblur one?

first, excuse me for the english. ok, i installed the cyanogenmod and then i wiped the memory and the cash because i wanted to give the defy to other person.
so i installed the cyanogenmod from the card - the stable version or something similar - and that was all. the phone get stuck on the motorola logo, and can't get in recovery mode, only have the bootloader, and tried to install different ROMs, but the result is always the same - it can't boot and get stuck on the logo.
anyone can help me, please?
i did have the same did u soulve that proplem man !?
nope, i'm trying almost every advice that i can find in the net, but still no results.
hopefuly someone here can help to solve this issue.
What is the EXACT ROM you flashed at first, and what are the others you tried flashing?
Can you get to stock recovery?
Go into bootloader, plug in your phone, use rsd lite to flash an .sbf.
Edit-
If its stuck still, try now to enter recovery, clear cache, then factory reset. Happened to me when i tried to install CM7 from stock 2.2
this should get it stock again.

@iYossi i flashed JRDNEM_U3_3.4.2_177-005_NORDIC_SIGN_SIGNED_UCAJRDNEMARAB1B80AA03A.0R_PDS03C_USAJRDNFRYORTNORD_P003_A001_HWp3_Service1FF then i tried the same and few others.
and no, i can't get to stock recovery i have access only to the bootloader. when i flash a ROM with RSD (the latest version) it get fine until the moment it tries to boot, then the RSD tell me that i have to boot the phone manualy and then it stuck and go to nowhere
@dyinghero27 i can't enter into recovery.
No, not recovery, load bootloader, flash with the newest stock sbf (think I seen 3.4.4 in Dev forum)
Edit* just like I suspected, I'm pretty sure your having problems with downgrading, you need to flash the newest sbf.

ok i tried a version that seems to work but now the display doesn't start. i have the defy connexted via usb and when i push the power button it connect/disconnect to the pc but the display remains off.
why i think that this version seems to work? because when i flash it to the defy it reboot the phone and says pass. the other versions stucks on reboot and the RSD says that i have to reboot manualy but the phone stucks on the motorola logo.
anyone have an idea, why the display is off. when i try to flash the phone i have no problems.

Hmm, sure you have the right sbf and it didn't corrupt in download? Also do you gave the latest Motorola drivers, if so even uninstalling and reinstalling them might help. The other thing I can think of is a virus or an antivirus that could be interfering?

i´m not sure if i have installed the right sbf, because i tried various and only this one seems to work ... partly. the others stuck on the motorola logo when RSD try to restart them, after the install. i suspect that this has to do with my empty battery.
i´ve cutted an usb cable and connected the red and the black wire directly to the pins, because i had the "the battery is low ... cannot program" problem, but i'm not sure if this is sufficient to get it back again.
Need some help....
Iam a nood to mobile phone flash, but got gingerbread on it....
Cracked my screen and need to send it in to repair.
Tried to flash it with nordic 2.2.2. but got stuck with the flash... RSD lite stops here:
"Manually reboot your phone" which is not possible....
Now it will not boot.... stops at the "android" logo.....
It will not boot into 2ndinit, tried to flash to another nordic 2.2.2. but with the same result.... Need some help..... :O

RDS gives this message often. I even think it says that every time I flashed a sbf. If you indeed didn't flash the full gingerbread but came from CM7 or a fixed sbf of the leaked gingerbread then there is no problem. Try to flash it again and just waint. Normally it reaches 100% and if it says "Manually reboot your phone" just wait. If everything goes well your phone is booting. You can also try to do a full wipe in stock recovery. Power-up your phone holding volume up (or down, cant remember) and if you get an android with warning sign pres both volume keys and chose wipe data/factory reset. If the flashing process doesn't reach 100% you have a problem.
Give us a link to the threat you followed for going to gingerbread and we can help you.
Thanks for the quick reply....
I´am at work right now, but will get home soon and try to get it to work again...
Used the "Cyanogenmod 7 by Quarx" and it worked like a charm...
Got home and all i had to do was to wipe data/factory reset.....
Thanks from a droid noobie....
Im having a problem with my phone booting. it does a variety of things from rebooting mid way through boot, hanging at the white HTC screen, getting to lock screen then rebooting...
point is, i cant get in to the system.. what i'd like to do is remove everything and get it to stock... the RUU would be nice, but it needs to be booted for that to happen. i've tried a couple of custom roms (vaelpak, synergy) but they all result the same way. cleared dalvik, data, .android_secure, cache with no impact..
RA 2.3 is what the recover console currently is...
what is the best way to recover the phone to stock?
im ok with working with the phone but not awesome so somewhat detailed directions would be appreciated.
hope i didnt leave anything out,
Thanks
What rom are you on? I am assuming you can get into recovery. May I recommend, fresh 4 rom by flipz to get everything back to normal first (Full wipe is necessary) ...then we can work on this further.
thanks for the response.
wiped data/secure/cache/dalvik
applied Fresh 4.2.0.0 rom
rebooted
showed HTC white screen for 2 seconds rebooted.. did this until it gave me the 3 vibrates and flashing green light..
reseated battery and powered on
HTC white hung for what seemed longer than normal than Fresh boots.. lock screen appears for a couple of sec and then it reboots.
thanks
Lets try a few more steps before concluding hardware issues.
1. wipe all
2. http://www.virusrom.com/Tools/VR_SUPERWIPE.zip (flash this)
3. Flash your favorite rom (try one of the newer ones if your SD is partitioned)
4. restart...and let the phone wait for 10 mins...before you unlock the screen
5. unlock screen and let it settle (DO NOT SET UP ACCOUNTS)
6. reboot recovery..wipe cache and dalvik and reboot
7. sign into market...
8. if it still reboots/FCs then flash latest radios http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=715485
cool i'll give that a try..
when you say wipe all, is the list i've provided "all"? i noticed with RA i can wipe system/boot and some others i believe... wasnt sure i should wipe the boot or system...
yes...start at format all factory reset...and then the list you've provided...dont wipe sdcard unless formatting it...and then follow from step 2
yeah basically what i listed was the factory reset + dalvik..
so, you mention if the SD card is partitioned (app2SD?) which i dont currently have setup, but its a new SDcard so i might.. but, if i put one of those newer roms on that assume App2SD (which i believe i did) then would the problems im having be a result of doing that??
no luck, still getting random reboots
what rom did you flash? But if you did all the steps from my earlier post, I am wondering if this is an hardware issue.Heres a thread about back to stock RUU . http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=7529500&postcount=1
here another for the latest froyo ruu
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=874251
just in case you would want to root back
well that sucks... i just replaced the screen and LCD too....
thats the tool i was trying to use but couldnt keep the system up long enough to get it to run right... in order to run the RUU you need to be in android (is that right? sounds werid, like saying in windows, past boot, etc etc).. anyways.. it has to be loaded, the RUU then flashes a special boot loader to do the restore... i've gotten a handful of errors, some of which even say that i have the wrong version (i'll try the one you posted but i've used an RUU before and tried the same one again)
i'll keep screwing with it, or get a new phone i guess.. still a year left on my contact so i'll be hitting up ebay or something :-/
thanks for all your help, really apprecaite it
Hi, I have been messing uo with my defy and now i don´t know if is brickes. I would need some help please.
I got my defy with android 2.1 from the retailer (vodafone). A few months ago i instaled through rsd lite a froyo rom: DEBLUR_SIGNED3.4.2-131-003. Last week i decided to update to MS2Ginger 3.0 lite and kernel i did it using 2nd init as shown in the thread . Everything worked fine until then (wonderfull rom).
I started messing with apk file and i got errors son i tried a wipe data and cache using 2nd init. But didn´t work fine it gave me errors. so idecided to reinstall 2nd init this time i think i used cm stable not latest. Then my defy started to enter to 2nd init each time i try to reboot. The SO didn´t start . so i decided to unistall bootloader from 2nd init. I managed to start the SO but after about 10 sec it rebooted again and again.
After reading some posts i tried to flash back to froyo JRDNEM_U3_3.4.2_155-002_DEBLUR_SIGN_SIGNED_UCAJRDNEMARAB1B80AA03A.0R_PDS03C_USAJRDNFRYORTCEE_P011_A010_HWp3_Service1FF throught rsd lite and i managed to do it Succesfully (only an error when the program askes to start up manually the device. I had to unplug the cable, remove the battery, then start the device in bootloader, reatach the cable and after rsd lite gives me succes)
But the phone doesn´t start it stais in the android bootanimation screen of this new froyo rom.
At this moment my phone doesn´t boot
I can get to bootloader by power Vol+
When i try to get to recover Power Vol - i get a screen with the android guy and an exclamation.
It looks i can flash an sbf throught rsd lite.
What can i do. Please help.
Should i keep trying to flash other froyo roms (i already have 2 or 3 froyo and gingerbread)
Sould i flash recovery-clockwork-2.5.0.1-sholes. to have custom recovery
I am afraid of keep messing things without trying to get help from you.
Thanks.
This was asked several times...
After flash SBF froyo (JRDNEM_U3_3.4.2_155-002_DEBLUR_SIGN_SIGNED_UCAJRDNEMARAB1B80AA03A.0R_P DS03C_USAJRDNFRYORTCEE_P011_A010_HWp3_Service1FF) you have to go to stock bootloader, not 2ndinit... You only have to press and HOLD vol - all the time during boot sequence. You will see a robot and a "!". Then, press vol+ and vol- at the same time... Use vol+ and vol- to select options and power button to "accept". Select "wipe data", select "yes", once it finish, select "wipe cache" and "yes". Then select "reboot now"... You are done!!!
PD: Next time, you should use search!!
PD: Video of how to do that (Youtube is your friend!! )

At the end of the post you can read... your problem/situation... "I downgraded from CM7 to Stock / Installed a new SBF but I'm having bootlops: (!) If this is happening to you, after flashing the Stock SBF, enter in Stock Recovery and do a full wipe (Data/Cache) and reboot."
[Q] If you help me i will TRY not to mess up with my defy again
