[Q] WebOS on Epic 4G? - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just read an article on PreCentral.net where a dev ported Android onto the Palm Pre and dual boots with WebOS.
How how hard would it be for WebOS to be ported to the Epic 4G? I'm guessing almost impossible, but I thought I'd ask. WebOS is a really underrated OS and I'd love to see it on great hardware, like the Epic.
Here's a link of the PreCentral article:
http://www.precentral.net/android-dual-booted-pre-hardware

As far as I know, WebOS is proprietary source and annotated be ported to us unless there is a WebOS phone exactly the same as our phone (there isn't and never will be because it would have to have the same processor, antennas, etc.)

Thanks for that. I still have my Pre as a backup and wanted Android on there.
Do you BONSAI?

That's cool someone finally managed to do it. However if it doesn't have a hardware gesture area I'd rather just use android the way it is. Now if our capacitive buttons could somehow be turned into a gesture area, I'd try it.
Edit; I see its the other way a round.... I have a pre minus and an epic, why the hell would I want my epic in my pre???? Lol...fail

so i come from the hero and they tried to do this and got it to work then some guy from palm os got on the thread and the thread was locked so i would stop befor you start or do it in secret...

Yeah I figured it would be tough but I was hoping someone would prove me wrong.
With the gesture area: I think the Epic has a big enough screen that a portion of the bottom screen could be the gesture area. Kind of like the Continuum?

I'd go back to Palm in a heartbeat if they came out with a Pre that had a 4"+ super amoled screen.

Same here.. I'm even contemplating the 3.6 inch Pre 3... but I'm thinking it could be too small after using the epic. I was kind of hoping they would just license their software, like MIcrosoft does, and let other companies take care of hardware. I'd love a Dell Venue Pro with WebOS or an Epic 4G with WebOS.
rulyskull, how did it run on your hero? Was it smooth?

Count me in. hopefully, hp smarter at doing business to spread webos.
It is a great architecture.
Can't wait for their dual core and more developer understand it.

Now that WebOS is Open Source...
So now that WebOS will be open source it's time to get a team together to see if we can port WebOS to the epic. Given that Android has been able to be ported to the TouchPad I would think some sort of a dual boot would be possible. Do we have the expertise here?

Completely behind this, webOS is beautiful and would look great on our phones. I can't really provide much dev help but would gladly help test/be a guinea pig

+1 for testing. Nothing would make me happier than to have webos on my epic.

I would love to flash it and try it out if it were ported, but then again, wat are the odds,

I was a big fan fan of WebOs too.... but it's dead. Nobody wants to spend countless hours on something that has no app developers attention or support. It's a dead dog.....kick it....it's still dead....LOL

Well, now that its open source maybe we can breath new life into it

[Req]Windows Phone 7

I dont know if this is the appropriate forum but i think it would be cool if we could get windows phone 7 running on our EVOs, the HD2 recently got it and its similar in hardware so i dont see why it wouldnt be possible
+1 That would be sweet!
Well first wrong forum. Second yeah, it would be cool but if you look at the rom for the hd2 there are a lot of tiles still not working. Also the hd2 is GSM and there are GSM wp7 phone out. Without a wp7 phone on cdma it is hard as getting the radios to work is difficult. At least hat was the impression I had.

It's still not a release though. As soon as some work is (if ever) started on it, this would be the correct section.
You're in the right forum, don't worry
Does anyone else thing that the WP7 look is incredibly ugly, or is it just me? haha
It would be quite wonderful to port WP7 to a phone like the EVO. But I believe it will be a daunting task as the HD2 has it easy(ish) they have windows mobile already installed on the device. If there is a similar device with the same hardware as the EVO running WP7 then it might be easier.
Drivers are the hardest to get working, the software could problably be made to work relatively easy. But without drivers to communicate with the cpu, storage, display, and etc there would not be much to see at all even if the software was able to run.
Plus and from my understanding that WP7 is pretty locked down at the moment and not all features would be accessible. Though that is a thought without any research into the subject.

I agree 100%. It was designed for tweenagers to be able to do all their social networking. Its kin 2.0 and they are even considering adding a new 'kin' studio. Personally, I don't recommend trying to port it over to an android device as Microsoft might not take too kindly to the licensing issue.

HTC HD7 is a pretty much an HD2 with WP7 if I'm not mistaken...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=818607
The hd2 is pretty much a evo just GSM.
flame and troll and flame and troll and bash someone for bringing up a great idea now back to flame and troll and flame and troll.
To the OP love the idea hope to see it come to light, ill definitely try it if someone can do it.
devs should not waste time with other OS's. reason being is that too much work is needed just to get everything working, and thats the job of the manufacturer. i rather they spend it adding/improving features to the solid foundation we have already, android.
plus android is free, windows is not and nor htc or you paid for windows on the evo so even if they had a fully working port you'd somehow have to get a license from MS and since they only sell oem license to manufacturer dont know how you could even legally get one. just my 2 cents
This would be REALLY sweet, but i dont see it working out until a CDMA WP7 is released, porting from GSM is 1000x harder to get working real well E.X. - Desire HD/Acer liquid ports.
I was in the microsoft store at my mall, they said a sprint CMDA WP7 is due this year. I'd be willing to bet itll be ported within a week after its released.

[Q] Help a noob out ...

So .... the developement should be blasting on the Epic touch right ?...
I mean as far as porting stuff over from what they already have on other GS2 devices ? will it be hard or will it be easy ?
and also the whole cyanogenmod thing ... how people are saying that the developer got the device so we should be supported and get it sooner than we did on the OG epic
Sorry for this thread it's just that ... well i was fooled when the Nexus S 4G was announced that we would be getting easy ports and such ... and i don't want to be let down like that again ... so i'd really appreciate it if someone with the knowledge would answer me
I have tried to do some reading up on this subject. I know the Epic Touch comes with GB 2.3.4 and from what I have read, it should be easier to port the ROMs to that phone than it is to do on this phone. The hardware keyboard and some other differences make the Epic a different animal altogether
Sent from my SPH-D700 using xda premium
This is why i basically made this thread ....
Thats what people said when the nexus s was coming out ...
"It's basically the same phone we'll get easy ports"
and that ended up being mostly false ... so i wanted to find out if the sayings about the upcoming GS2 are actually true or is it just false information that spread like wildfire on the forums...
I am not sure I am following this 100% but this is my basic interpretation. The Epic Touch will not help with bringing us ports. But the Epic Touch will be easier to port to because it doesn't have the extra hardware. How true this is I am not sure. I have not done any research on this.

I would be surprised if the Epic Touch was a niche phone like the Epic is. I know I initially chose the Epic because of the hardware keyboard. Most of the masses went to the Evo. There doesn't seem to be the buzz over the Evo 3d like there was when there were 20 Evo commercials a day and ONE Epic commercial a month. I would like a dev to give some feedback about if it will be possible to port a rom like Lite'ning or if the phone differences make it harder than it just a GSM to CDMA port

[Q] XDA Samsung Development Teams - What is the landscape like for Samsung dev

Hey all, let me be very candid. I am coming from the OG EVO camp and we had an excellent set of developers (toast, TEAMWIN, Unrevoked,etc...)
My main concern with Samsung, is that most Samsung users say "You better like what you get when you buy it, because that's how it will stay". Now, I know that Samsung will likely update the E4GT some, but probably not as much as HTC does.
This being said, have those of you that are previous Android/Samsung owners (such as Epic 4G) experienced a good set of devs and development for Samsung products? I am seeing Team ACS pop up, but I don't know much about them. Do you feel like Samsung's lack of support down the road for E4GT will be made up for for the Samsung devs here at XDA? Thanks for any feedback, this pretty much seems like the best phone ever produced...

He was comparing the Epic community to this one. On the Epic, everything is really difficult to develop. The keyboard and some of the internals make it difficult. Devs got 2.3 running well on the Samsung Moment, and even have CM7 working (mostly) on it. The dev community are the ones that fixed the infamous data lock problem, not Samsung.
The ET4G has FAR more interest by devs than the Moment ever did, so I would not be worried at all about development.
You'll just need to look around and take a little bit from each community... ACS, XDA and SDX are all great resources.

OHH, that makes sense. In other words, you think development of this phone will more closely parallel the development of the International GS2 because it's more similar? That's very exciting news. So far I have heard @lithid may come over and even rumors of @calkulin, which are two great names from the EVO 4G camp
theres no support like htc dev support...#just sayin...

[Q] Windows Phone 7 Port?

Been a long time android user. Love the customization of the OS, but its always fun to try something new! I know there have been a lot of people asking this on other device threads. Honestly, the E4GT could run WP7 like a champ. Plus, it would be great to have the option and be free to run what you want. Thats what XDA is for isn't it? Anyone give this a shot yet?

Back to the topic. Is there any way to install Windows Phone 7 onto the Epic Touch? I know for a fact that the E4GT can easily run it with the specs it has. Why not try and pull WP7 off of another Samsung WP7 device. Maybe that could be a starting point? I'm not a developer, but theres gotta be more people out there who want this to happen or are at least interested.

Like someone already said.. this would be considered illegal since WP7 is not opensource like Android.. It would also be extremely difficult (don't want to say impossible), considering the source is not available and the drivers most likely being incompatible.
This is the closest you'll get to it:
https://market.android.com/details?id=info.tikuwarez.launcher3&hl=en
Ah. Makes sense. It is like Microsoft to screw up something with great potential by locking it down. Oh well... I'll just ask this since theres already a few people in here to seem to know their stuff. What rom would you recommend for the E4GT?

Now that you can go back to full stock, give them all a try. Everything is done exactly the same as on the Epic so it should be easy for you. Which is best is impossible to say. As you probably know from the Epic, some ROMs just work better on one phone than they may on another even though they are the same. That's part of the mystery of these Sammy phones

you mean wont be jailed if we install it on our android phones ???
Maybe, it is possible?
Guess it can be done. Not at this moment though. Few years ago when Steve Jobs introduced Intel processors in macs, a new unofficial project was started known as Hackintosh. What it does is it simply asks the user to make a prototype of a certain version of a Mac and then installs Mac OS X using some custom bootloaders. I have done it in my machine.
Well, if we can find a phone exactly same as that of any WP phone, then it MAYBE possible, 'cause that'll (maybe ) discard the need for new drivers. Plus, its the world of piracy   unless, you want to go sell your device or patent it, it should be perfectly alright to pirate WP (On your own risk though, IT'S NOT RECOMMENDED )
*I DO NOT ENCOURAGE PIRACY, ITS JUST AN IDEA, A WAY TO FULFILL YOUR PIPE DREAM*

(Update w/ demo) ROM market for epic touch 4g

Hello fellow E4GT owners! This thread is intended to introduce the idea of a "ROM market" idea i had which has a compilation of all the roms, themes, mods, etc..SO I made a somewhat working concept app that will convey what my idea is. It is a buggy alpha, but ots enough to show what i want to make IF you guys want it. So here is it:
Introducing ROM market!
Purpose:
To bring together all the workings and information of the xda e4gt forums to one place in a market-esque feel.
Features (Users):
-Up to date download links of all current roms, modems, odin tars, mods, themes, kernels, and recoveries.
-Up to date features list, change logs, and screen shots.
-User friendly market-like experience.
Features (Devs):
-Customize your roms page to seperate yourself from the rest
-Direct links to a bug tracker page (If you have one)
Can a mod edit the second option of the poll to a "No" please?
**Update**
Demo:
http://goo-inside.me/devs/Globalninja/Rom-Market-2.0.apk
Tell me what you guys think...Keep in mind this is still in alpha.
Go:
ROMs->Blazer->Blazer 4.0 to see an example of the page.
Whats clickable:
Back button (Top left)
Mail Button (Top right)
Download button
The change log and features box.
You scroll through the images, but I have not added the full screen version yet.
This would be like a "Cydia" but for android right? I've been waiting for something like this. Were we could install mods and stuff like that. Thanks OP

It looks cool, but the E4GT wiki is sorta the same thing, I guess the difference would be a more simpler approach and exclusive to the E4GT? Makes sense if you can get all the developers on board I Imagine.
would you be able to handle the workload? acs updater has a place where people can submit stuff and we are always behind on it... (very very behind)
i use goo-inside.me's app, it has any stuff i do organized very nicely, the admins have it setup so new stuff is automatically added in. it supports automatic updates as well so long as devs set their roms up nicely. plus all teh files are hosted on their server so no worries about old/bad links.
plus they threatened to beat me up unless i endorsed them :O
