[Q] Help a noob out ... - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So .... the developement should be blasting on the Epic touch right ?...
I mean as far as porting stuff over from what they already have on other GS2 devices ? will it be hard or will it be easy ?
and also the whole cyanogenmod thing ... how people are saying that the developer got the device so we should be supported and get it sooner than we did on the OG epic
Sorry for this thread it's just that ... well i was fooled when the Nexus S 4G was announced that we would be getting easy ports and such ... and i don't want to be let down like that again ... so i'd really appreciate it if someone with the knowledge would answer me

I have tried to do some reading up on this subject. I know the Epic Touch comes with GB 2.3.4 and from what I have read, it should be easier to port the ROMs to that phone than it is to do on this phone. The hardware keyboard and some other differences make the Epic a different animal altogether
Sent from my SPH-D700 using xda premium

This is why i basically made this thread ....
Thats what people said when the nexus s was coming out ...
"It's basically the same phone we'll get easy ports"
and that ended up being mostly false ... so i wanted to find out if the sayings about the upcoming GS2 are actually true or is it just false information that spread like wildfire on the forums...

I am not sure I am following this 100% but this is my basic interpretation. The Epic Touch will not help with bringing us ports. But the Epic Touch will be easier to port to because it doesn't have the extra hardware. How true this is I am not sure. I have not done any research on this.

I would be surprised if the Epic Touch was a niche phone like the Epic is. I know I initially chose the Epic because of the hardware keyboard. Most of the masses went to the Evo. There doesn't seem to be the buzz over the Evo 3d like there was when there were 20 Evo commercials a day and ONE Epic commercial a month. I would like a dev to give some feedback about if it will be possible to port a rom like Lite'ning or if the phone differences make it harder than it just a GSM to CDMA port

Think we'd get Froyo if Sprint / Samsung hired the devs from here?

Let me say this right off the bat the devs here are the best. I haven't tried any of the custom ROMs but from what I've read most people are happy with them.
So having said that I am wondering if Samsung / Sprint actually recruited the devs to help them make the best ROM available would it make the Android releases go faster?
My gut instincts tells me no. The devs here do it for the love of what they do and do it for free. I have to admire the talents and inspiration being put into the custom ROMs that we may never see in production releases due to the custom crap they put into it in hopes it all works.
Apple do have an advantage over this but still hinders innovation.
Bottom line is devs keep up the good work despite of us *****in at Sprint / Samsung about 2.2 and beyond.
Darkk
they didn't drop DK28 for no reason. they wanted the input.
Exactly. Why actually hire the devs here, when they can "leak" DK28 and get them to work for free. haha
I can tell you for a fact Sprint looks at XDA work...
Sent from my Frankenstein FROYO using XDA App...
Don't think they would knowingly higher an xda dev just because they would fear more of leaks and infrormation not being safeguarded as they do with there army of zombi devs....

they could for sure if they got everyone from SDX!!!!!!!!!
Just had an overthought out reply about software development vs cooking.. but then read the OP and realized it didn't say google..
The devs here could probably match sprints work.. probably not Samsung..probably close but their not known as being the greatest software company in the world anyway..
Their are very different fields of expertise, and comparing these level of skillsets is like comparing apples to oranges..

Developers needed to port sense to the Epic!! Please Help

Hello,
I am organizing a team of developers to port sense to the Samsung Epic. Does anyone want to help???
Please Reply to this thread if you are interested. Once we get enough developers, we will discuss what ROM we should use as a base and start working on it.
Thanks

Shouldn't this be posted in the Epic forums? Also, not to come off as an asshole, but if you wanted Sense, you should have bought an Evo.
Thanks, a bunch, I am looking for 3-5 more people to carry out the load evenly.
We will then decide what ROM should we use as a base and start the work!!!!

Well, I have also posted this in the Epic forums, just am looking for developers who know how to deal with sense as well, so I posted this on the Evo forums. I used to have an Evo, but switched to the Epic due to the need of a keyboard. Enough with that, are there any more developers who would like to help?
Thanks

Just a thought to port the EVO shift may be good due to slide out keyboard they both have. Will be a tough port due to such different screens. I'm not too good with this but willing to try with kitchen. My wife has a epic maybe she will let me test some.
I know she wants sense on it.

Evo Shift Rom is good, but I was thinking more Desire Z, but its not final yet, it depends on what the team decides. We will discuss everything once we get enough members. If you are willing to volunteer, please reply to the thread.
Thanks
Desire Z is a GSM phone, therefore it will have some issues like no 4G. Myn just realized Warm Z TwoPointTwo which has some issues like no 4G and no EPST. I would suggest going with the Evo Shift if you're going to port a ROM.
Ok, I will keep that in mind. Are you also helping out with the ROM or just wanted to add a suggestion?
Thanks

The screen is the least of their concerns when porting something like this. The framework that HTC uses is completely different than Samsung. Samsung uses a different type of filesystem that might have issues with Sense, blah blah blah...
There are a million things working against porting a ROM like this. There was a Sense port for the Droid 1 at one point but it was a tremendous PITA.

[Q] WebOS on Epic 4G?

I just read an article on PreCentral.net where a dev ported Android onto the Palm Pre and dual boots with WebOS.
How how hard would it be for WebOS to be ported to the Epic 4G? I'm guessing almost impossible, but I thought I'd ask. WebOS is a really underrated OS and I'd love to see it on great hardware, like the Epic.
Here's a link of the PreCentral article:
http://www.precentral.net/android-dual-booted-pre-hardware
As far as I know, WebOS is proprietary source and annotated be ported to us unless there is a WebOS phone exactly the same as our phone (there isn't and never will be because it would have to have the same processor, antennas, etc.)

Thanks for that. I still have my Pre as a backup and wanted Android on there.
Do you BONSAI?
That's cool someone finally managed to do it. However if it doesn't have a hardware gesture area I'd rather just use android the way it is. Now if our capacitive buttons could somehow be turned into a gesture area, I'd try it.
Edit; I see its the other way a round.... I have a pre minus and an epic, why the hell would I want my epic in my pre???? Lol...fail
so i come from the hero and they tried to do this and got it to work then some guy from palm os got on the thread and the thread was locked so i would stop befor you start or do it in secret...
Yeah I figured it would be tough but I was hoping someone would prove me wrong.
With the gesture area: I think the Epic has a big enough screen that a portion of the bottom screen could be the gesture area. Kind of like the Continuum?

Same here.. I'm even contemplating the 3.6 inch Pre 3... but I'm thinking it could be too small after using the epic. I was kind of hoping they would just license their software, like MIcrosoft does, and let other companies take care of hardware. I'd love a Dell Venue Pro with WebOS or an Epic 4G with WebOS.
rulyskull, how did it run on your hero? Was it smooth?
Count me in. hopefully, hp smarter at doing business to spread webos.

Now that WebOS is Open Source...
So now that WebOS will be open source it's time to get a team together to see if we can port WebOS to the epic. Given that Android has been able to be ported to the TouchPad I would think some sort of a dual boot would be possible. Do we have the expertise here?

Completely behind this, webOS is beautiful and would look great on our phones. I can't really provide much dev help but would gladly help test/be a guinea pig
+1 for testing. Nothing would make me happier than to have webos on my epic.

I would love to flash it and try it out if it were ported, but then again, wat are the odds,
I was a big fan fan of WebOs too.... but it's dead. Nobody wants to spend countless hours on something that has no app developers attention or support. It's a dead dog.....kick it....it's still dead....LOL
Well, now that its open source maybe we can breath new life into it

[Q] XDA Samsung Development Teams - What is the landscape like for Samsung dev

Hey all, let me be very candid. I am coming from the OG EVO camp and we had an excellent set of developers (toast, TEAMWIN, Unrevoked,etc...)
My main concern with Samsung, is that most Samsung users say "You better like what you get when you buy it, because that's how it will stay". Now, I know that Samsung will likely update the E4GT some, but probably not as much as HTC does.
This being said, have those of you that are previous Android/Samsung owners (such as Epic 4G) experienced a good set of devs and development for Samsung products? I am seeing Team ACS pop up, but I don't know much about them. Do you feel like Samsung's lack of support down the road for E4GT will be made up for for the Samsung devs here at XDA? Thanks for any feedback, this pretty much seems like the best phone ever produced...

Comparing the OG Epic 4G dev community to the Epic Touch 4G community can't work. This device is MUCH more popular. Either way ACS has the most popular ROMs on the OG Epic 4G also.

He was comparing the Epic community to this one. On the Epic, everything is really difficult to develop. The keyboard and some of the internals make it difficult. This phone will have tons of top notch development. I am optimistic that we will get timely updates as well. You have to remember the Epic was a niche phone. Devs got 2.3 running well on the Samsung Moment, and even have CM7 working (mostly) on it. The dev community are the ones that fixed the infamous data lock problem, not Samsung.
The ET4G has FAR more interest by devs than the Moment ever did, so I would not be worried at all about development.
You'll just need to look around and take a little bit from each community... ACS, XDA and SDX are all great resources.

OHH, that makes sense. In other words, you think development of this phone will more closely parallel the development of the International GS2 because it's more similar? That's very exciting news. So far I have heard @lithid may come over and even rumors of @calkulin, which are two great names from the EVO 4G camp

Roms / Developers.....

Ok I just got this phone I had the EVO 4G/Then got the EVO 3D..well the Development was awesome with those 2...So I figured on how damn sweet this Epic Touch is..I figured the Development would be smokin..Ya i know phone only been out for a few weeks...I love this damn phone..Im done with HTC CRAP...I just hope that there are some Good Developer that comes over this way an make some good Roms for this Phone...Hey you people can responde i dont care hell if you want to ***** or talk crap go for it lol I dont care..I just like to see other peoples thoughts...
The development will come. I too came from the evo and was spoiled a little. I am really happy with how things are going though. So hang in there. Rumors have it there are top developers working on things right now... Hope they are right.
Also in all seriousness there are at least one of these threads per day that pop up lol.

I think I'd have to somewhat Agree with R1ptide. The phone was so great I ran it stock for almost 2 weeks. And im a Modder and Flashaholic.
But really give the phone 3-5months minimum before complaining about dev's =)
We have some awesome developers already, and they're doing great work. Heck we have guys that don't even own the phone building kernels, and removing CIQ for us. I am pretty confident that you will have a fine selection of kernels, ROMs, and themes to pick from over time.
Lets spend more time encouraging and praising the guys and gals we do have working hard for us, and giving up their own time... instead of complaining about "this isn't nearly as good as EVO development".
I came from GSM att atrix slow development but I'm sure it will pick up. Atrix is kinda dead because people are rude just wait and it will pick up

What's wrong with trying to learn to do some things on your own? All these Devs had to start somewhere. So why wait around and complain? Sure, coding may be a big leap, but things like changing most graphics isn't that difficult. Take the time, do a little research and before long you won't be reliant upon others. Plus you'll have the satisfaction of your phone being Your phone.

All I really want is a AOSP rom, doesn't necessarily need to be CM7 but I figured if anyone can do it it will be their team first, but now that ICS SDK is out and source code probably soon I have my doubts that it will come at all to this phone.
