[Q] Trouble getting recovery image and superuser access - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys I looked all over for a solution for hours and I didn't see a thread containing my exact problem/solution so I will post it here. Here is my problem:
I flashed TMartin's Gingersense Rom and thought it was flashable back to recovery, but I realized it was a complete system dump after doing so. I have downloaded the new Superuser update to 2.3.6.1 although the phone doesn't detect it. This is what it says: "an error occurred and su was not updated. A zip file (su-2.3.1-bin-signed.zip) has been placed on your sd card, please reboot into recovery mode and flash it to update your su binary."
My Evo doesn't think it's rooted even though it has the superuser app installed. I also tried using Rom Manager to reboot into recovery mode but it says this: "you must root your phone for Rom Manager to function. Superuser was not found at "/system/bin/su" or "/system/xbin/su". Use google search on your computer to find instructions to root your phone." I have also tried to turn it off and press "voldown+power" and it goes straight to the rom. I believe I've overwritten the recovery image and I even know where to begin. I had clockwork 2.6 and 2 nandroid back-ups before doing this. Is there something I'm missing? Please help!

same thing happened with me and a couple evo's on my xp pro box.
what i did was, i just started the process over from the beginning...one of them took a couple times to stick.

Well Tmartin had a flashable zip of the gingersense rom. In the thread that got closed, in the OP, there were a few links. One was for a flashable zip, and the others were the system dump, as you noted.
When you boot to the bootloader, does it show you S off, or S on? When you select recovery from the bootloader, what is your result? Do you get a black screen/red triangle? Or does it just hang at the splash or something? If you're S off, you should just be able to flash a PC36IMG of recovery, and then flash a new rom from there. If you're S on, and have no recovery, then you'll need to re root your phone.

How do I even go about doing that?

Oh woops I didn't see you reply k2buckley lol. I can't boot into the bootloader, it goes straight into the rom.

Shut down your device. Simultaneously press the DOWN volume button and the power button until your device starts. After a short pause, a few lines of text will scroll across the screen. You will then be in the bootloader menu. At the top, you should see either S-ON or S-OFF.

K2, doesn't he have to disable fastboot to fix this?
posting & replying via the XDA Premium app.

Just tried it. It doesn't boot into the bootleader, it just goes straight to the rom. I can imagine it has to be S-Off because it has superuser permissions (even though I can't access) it

You can't get to your bootloader? Are you on the Gingerbread Sense rom? If so, go to menu>settings>applications. Uncheck "fastboot". THen shut your phone off, and try to get to the bootloader again. Should work this time.

THat would be it Doug! That silly little setting has been giving a lot of people confusion while trying to enter recovery, lol.

I got into the bootloader! Brilliant! It is S-Off and I am in recovery with clockwork. I'm reverting to my back-up now. Thank you!

Yea, I only remember because it happened to me when I tested out that rom, lol. I too am running SalvageMod 1.2.1. It's been my daily for a bit now, just super smooth and stable for me. I was running some of the Salvage Nightlies too, which were good. The nightly 13 I tried had music controls on the lockscreen, which I'm a big fan of. It also came with Tiamat 3.3.7 kernel, which my phone hates. I went back to the stable build for now. I'm also curious to see Myn's next project. That interview that was on Good and Evo revealed that he's working on Warm Gingerbread. I keep hoping for one of those emails from Myn, with a nice link to some beta action!
To The OP:
Glad you got it worked out! Good deal man.

[Q] Problems Flashing Clockwork Mod

Hey All,
I am trying to install CyanogenMod 6.1 onto my DHD. I have successfully rooted, but when I try to install ClockworkMod Recovery via Rom Manager, It says that the flash was successful, but when I attempt to reboot into recovery I get a red triangle with an exclamation mark. I'd upload a picture but as I am new I'm not allowed yet
So obviously it hasn't installed properly even when it says it has. I have tried uninstalling and re-installing, and when I try to install older/newer versions of CWM, it says that an error has occurred.
Does anybody know how to fix this? or alternatively is another recovery firmware available, such as Amon_RA for the DHD?
Thanks in advance guys
on the sdcard in the Clockwork directory, delete the .settings file and the download directory.
Try again it will flash now.
I have already 'reported' the problem here.

Hey there leppie,
I did as you instructed, I closed the application, deleted the .settings file and download directory inside the clockwork directory, and it reinstalled. No difference, still getting the phone icon with the red triangle and exclamation mark
do you any other suggestions I could try?

I'm getting the same red triangle and I've also tried your solution but still no joy
You are rooted, but are you s-off? You need s-off to bypass the emmc lock on your phones memory.
If you have only root, anything you flash will disappear back to stock whenever you reboot.

Thanks for your reply, I am currently S-ON, which probably explains the issues I'm having. Could you point me in the direction of a straightforward guide for turning S-OFF for the DHD?
You can take a look here, here or here, for example. Or maybe next time you could try to use that funny button with "SEARCH THIS FORUM" written on it.

I have managed to get S-OFF and I'm successfully running CyanogenMod 6.1.2 It feels like i've set my phone free, it's much faster and the additional options and tweaks are very much appreciated!
Now it's time for a faster kernel

Trying to recovery partially bricked phone

Okay, so a friend asks me to fix her Dinc... here's the story.
When I first got the dinc, it only powered up into FASTBOOT (HBOOT 0.92, Radio 2.15). The volume and power buttons don't work. She said it crashed when she FC a program to get more memory.
I tried to flash the phone using pb31img.zip on a newly formatted (fat32) sdcard. It scans the card and errors with older version.
Next I try to flash with RUU. That was successful and I can boot into the phone... in safe mode. In addition, if I shut down the phone and power up again, I get stuck in FASTBOOT and have to redo the RUU.
Okay, I figured with the phone booting into Froyo, all is not lost. I tried to use unrevoked to get root and poke around. That failed with error asking if firmware is too new.
I try to install z4root... that doesn't work either since safe mode seems to mean only default system programs work (I can install, but can't run). Probably why unrevoked failed also.
I'm starting to think it is a hardware issue since the RUU should have fixed everything.
Any ideas???
Thanks.

As I mentioned, none of the buttons in fastboot seems to work, so I can't reboot, just a battery pull. Interestingly, when I have the pb31img there, it scans and tells me its an older version, but then the buttons work... reboots back into fastboot.
I'm thinking of trying the revert to 2.1 and go from there... is it safe to flash over the latest Froyo RUU with 2.15 radio with the following?
RUU_IncredibleC_Verizon_WWE_1.22.605.2_Radio_1.00.03.04.06_hboot_0.79_release_161494_NoDriver_0514.exe

Any luck Woz?
Yes, Doug gave me a bunch of roms to flash. Nothing worked. The last step we did before I took a break was to get into recovery using adb. Then I wiped cache and data. That didn't seem to work. Flashed another rom using recovery. Nada.
I put the phone down for a few hours. Then I decided to crack it open to see if it was a refurb (cheap label makes me suspicious). Nothing unusual inside, I put it back together and powered on... the thing booted normally... everything worked.
Doug suspects it was the data/cache wipe, I don't know. I think it was the bug that got let out when I cracked it open.

HELP!!
I tried to flash the overclocked kernel and now Im stuck in a bootloop and can't load recovery or be recognized in fastboot usb. It seems like I may have bricked my phone any suggestions. PLEASE HELP
update - I fixed it lol almost thought my dinc 2 was a brick
I may be in the same situation and would like to know how you solved your problem.
I rooted successfully and was running the Gingersense rom with the stock kernel. I wanted to OC a kernel so I downloaded one that I think was intended to run with MIUI. I made a backup so I figured if the kernel didn't work I could always go back.
After installing the new kernel I went into a boot loop. I pulled the battery, got into recovery and tried to restore a backup, but now I freeze on the HTC screen. I've tried three different backups and none of them work -- all freeze on the HTC screen.
I am becoming desperate. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Have you tried wiping everything (including /system under "mounts and storage") before restoring the backup? Or tried flashing a different rom? Probably happened because the kernels for AOSP roms and sense roms aren't interchangeable. I would think that restoring a backup would rewrite the boot partition though, which should fix it..
I wiped everything (did data wipe/factory resets as well as wiping everything individually, several times) and could never get any of my backups to work.
I finally copied CM7.1 beta onto the SD card and flashed that (after first having to scrounge to find a card reader and computer that would read an SDHC card) and that worked.
I tried restoring one of my previous backups over CM7.1 (with and without wiping) and went back to freezing on the HTC screen again on each one of them. Don't understand that, since everything was working fine when those backups were made.
Anyway, now I'm using CM7.1 and have a working phone again.
Thanks for your work on this. Much appreciated for helping to realize my dream of a fully-rooted Inc2.
/bow
Ihave the same issues with backup not restoring and getting the white screen. Might need a new SD card.

Just get s-off and tried to flash this rom. Everything went fine but i see no su in programs (( No any root sw wont work. Maybe im doing something wrong ? Ive opened zip and su and busybox is there in xbin folder but no su after rom flashed .
Getting stuck on the htc splash screen any time I try to install this...
I also am getting stuck at the HTC boot splash. I'm kind of new to the custom roms though.
I used fastboot and flashed the boot.img to the boot partition. Then took the /system and repackaged it into a yaffs2 image. Flashed the result to the system partition. Don't know if thats exactly what to do.

You just have to flash it in recovery. Nothing tricky or difficult like what the previous poster described. The instructions for flashing can be found in almost any ROM thread.

HELP, recovery does not work, cm7 files

I need help, I rooted phone using CM7 instructions to put CM7 on evo 4g.
Confirmed s-off. copied cm7 update zip latest version stable, and google apps zip on root of sd card.
Turned phone off, volume down and power, then went to recovery.
It goes to a red triangle and does nothing. Replaced the two zipped files and still the same. I do not know what I am doing wrong. Please help, this is my first time doing this, but I spent a huge amount of time reading and making sure that I did everything right.
You may need to re-install your recovery. I recommend following the steps in the OP of the link below (Amon-RA 2.3).

Ok can you get to recovery? Can you boot your phone to the stock rom you had?
When you power the phone off and then on with volume down does it take you to the bootloader screen (white with kool little androids)? If yes download this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=705026 download the pc36img.zip and place it in the root of your sd card. when you power on with volume down it will ask you if you would like to apply update hit yes and yes again. Reboot then remove the zip and reboot again and go to recovery . Let me know how it goes.
I have to tell you you might get the Q&A Troll police for posting in the development section this is for roms, mods, fixes and the like and you question should go in the Q&A keep that in mind next time.
update to my post
I can go to white screen, and i can go to the recovery option. It then goes to red triangle and it stalls, I have to take battery out, it boots up just fine.
One question that I have, does the CM7 update file (update-cm-7.0.3.1. supersonic signed.zip) have all the necessary files required to go through this recovery process.

I can go to white screen, and i can go to the recovery option. It then goes to red triangle and it stalls, I have to take battery out, it boots up just fine.

You need to flash your recovery first and to answer your question no CM7 is a rom not a recovery system. Click on the link given by the other user or myself which are the same download the file and follow instructions you need to get your recovery working first before you flash a rom.
thankyou,
Thankyou I will do what you guys suggested. Thank you for your time.

No problem good luck and hitting the thanks button will be sufficient
Just wanted to say thanks to the contributors here. The OP is new and posting in the wrong section. Instead of flaming them, you guys offered info relevant to the question and let them know that there is a more appropriate place for their next question. That is the great attitude that brought me to XDA originally.
