[Q] Battery Life: - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Which is more helpful to the battery life on the Evo: Advanced Task Killer or Juice Defender?

I'd go against both...never saw a need, but juice defender would be better.

what would you recommend if you're against both of these?

Personally, I don't think they're needed, as the phone is smart enough when to kill something, or let it run in the background. And its been shown that task killers can do more harm than good.

Juice defender doesn't kill your tasks it just turns if the 3g when your phones screen is of and the battery life is amazing with juice defender it is just unbelievable everyone should use it if they have an evo.

I've had some success with JuiceDefender. ALthough keep in mind that the difference will be small. ATK is not really necessary or helpful usually

Task killers are useless on 2.2 and above.

you dont need any of them, the OS does an exceptional job on it's one with Gingerbread im at 8hrs and 10m on the stock battery and im barely at 40% with moderate usage, phone calls, emails, texts, live facebook updates and a few games of angry birds and some web browsing

Juice Defender Ultimate Help

Hi all,
I installed Juice Defender Ultimate on my E4GT and it told me of course I needed to install the free version as well for it to function. So I did this as well. This left me with a total of 3 icons in my applications.
So i figured I would try and do it the other way around, uninstalled them and installed the free, then the Ultimate after that. Still it leaves me with 3 icons. One for the free version and 2 ultimate icons.
Is there any way to do anything about this? I would rather not have 3 different icons for juice defender ultimate listed in my apps.
Any help is much appreciated.
Thanks.
I don't even think you really need juice defender, as were task killers were pre-2.2 days juice defender probably doesn't apply. I easily get 12 hours of real world use out of my phone. Your better off just carrying a spare battery as I think that app isn't as clean as it used to be. Or try Tasker instead
Battery extending apps like Juice Defender and most task killers do more harm than good. With gingerbread and above task killers are not needed as the o/s does a good job of managing applications. the Samsung Epic and Galaxy 2 phones have a task killer built in, its a widget called "Program Monitor". The Evo 3D also had a task killer built in.....
What does Juice Defender do that is harmful? There's no app-killing going on.

I think Juice Defender is pretty awesome. I haven't managed to tweak my settings properly yet, but once I put the "extreme" profile on, I got almost 2 and a half days of moderate browsing, phone calls and a LOT of texts.
@tweeker, I'm not sure how you got 3 icons. I got the free version first and then went to ultimate, so my experience was a bit different. But now I just have the Utlimate icon in my app list. Maybe you can uninstall all of them and then go the route that I took?

Juice Defender Ultimate and WiFi Calling

Hi guys!
So I use Juice Defender Ultimate to squeeze out that extra juice from our wonderful phone. And up until now everything was fine. But I realize now that because I will be relying on WiFi calling to be able to use my phone at home (and in most other places that I go since I know WiFi uses less battery than network) I will need WiFi to always be active. I was reading my settings in Juice Defender and I can't figure out what setting I need to click in order to always keep wifi active. Any ideas? Is it even worth it to use Juice Defender anymore now that I always need wifi to be on?
Thanks for all the help!
In Juice Defender's control setting there is an "Keep enabled" setting, click on wi-fi to make sure it is always enabled.
Thank you! Is it worth it to use Juice Defender anymore if I use this setting? Will I still see battery enhancements? I was seeing JD reporting 2x battery...I doubt I will see that now...
IMO, Juice Defender is completely unnecessary.
You can set almost every single of the options manually in their respective apps/settings.
What is the point of putting a blanket on your phone that controls how often things update? Just change the settings in the respective apps/settings..
For example, I use LauncherPro Plus.. in my FB widget settings, I have it set to update every five minutes.. why would I put another app on that blocks it to only update every 15 or 30 minutes? That's not "saving" battery, it's resetting your update time interval. If I wanted to do that, I would just set LauncherPro to only update every 15 or 30 minutes..
I can give more examples, but to me the whole thing is pointless. Why would I want a 4G phone that's super fast if I'm going to hobble it to Edge and save AT MOST an hour or two of battery?
Honestly, I get the same or better battery life with my phone the way it is setup without Juice Defender. I've yet to find one reason to use it, and yes, I have the "Ultimate" version.
What I want is a phone that's always fast AND gets great battery life. It's not a magic trick if your turning everything off (Sync, Wifi, 4G) and getting a hour or two more of battery life..
You will still see battery enhancements, but not as much. Wi-fi uses less juice than 4G.
To the above poster, the point of Juice Defender is for it to turn things off when you don't need them. It's also convenient to globally set your syncing. I definitely get way more than a bonus 2 hours of battery life using Juice Defender more like at least 5 hours, and it doesn't really interfere with my daily tasks. I definitely do not need 4G on when my screen is off, and it syncs so I am perfectly fine with that. 4G is a huge battery drainer so I want that off whenever I can.

[Q] Battery life

How's the battery life on this phone? I'm thinking about getting it.
Battery life is *ok*.... But for me, i can unplug my phone at 7am i the morning, and by 10pm when i go to bed, im typically around 15%-30%.
To do it, i use a task killer (i prefer the one by rhythm software). I keep things closed that dont need to be running. Also, i dont use the stock launcher, i believe that launcher is part of the problem since once i switched from it my battery life increased quite a bit! I use Launcher Pro.
Turn off your location settings (wireless networks and gps). Keep your screen timeout low, like 1 minute, and get yourself into the habit of pressing the power button to shut off your screen when your done.. Prevents butt-calls and saves battery!
A lot of people say the battery sucks, and keeping everything stock-ish, yes it sucks.. But when you customize the phone to your own feel with a few small tweaks, its better than most phones!

Very hard to say! But i send around 5000 text messages a month, probably spend at least an hour a day on the internet, checking emails, etc... Maybe another hour doing other random stuff? Lots of text messages and a couple hours with other stuff.. So not a TON, but not a little either.
at the beginning you will hate it !
a couple of recharges and drains till the phone shuts down
ofcourse root and remove all the bloatware and do battery calibration, and now... its the best battery on a smartphone i have ever owned !
lasts much longer than my second phone iphone 4S and xperia S
definitely much better than the S2
Battery's Great Now!
I've rooted, switched to Go Launcher, and running Juice Defender balanced profile. With moderate, surfing, messaging, email, and occasional tethering, I'm getting 2+ days. Manage to get a nice LTE signal from home. Dang! It's faster than my AT&T U-verse.
2+ days sounds very impressive. I must say its true the battery life gets better after some time, but for me its now about 18+ hours with not so much use. I guess it also depends what kind and how much apps you've installed and if they run in background-mode.
I've made the weird experience that sometimes for maybe 1-2 hours the battery status remains on one level, but later it drains a lot in very short time (usage is same like before). So unfortunatly not really reliable.

Forgot to mention what this guy said! Remove the bloatware! Tuns of that crap stays running in the background whether you like it or not! So if you use Titanium Backup after rooting, you will definitely have one of the best batteries on the market! I woke up and unplugged my phone at 5:30am, here it is 19 hours later and my battery is at 31%

battery issue

I've been an owner of the Samsung galaxy s 2 since may from a nexus one which I had for two years...
Since I got this phone, noticed I've been having issues with the battery life on this phone. If I unplug from full charge at like 2pm, and use it, I wouldn't say a lot but not like not at all, the battery would be dead before midnight. That's a battery life of less than 10 hours.... that sucks...
My data is usually on most of the time considering I have 5gb and can't use it all... I tether near end of bill cycle to use it up... lol
GPS is rarely ever on... Bluetooth is only turned on when I plan to use my plantronics voyager pro bt headset
I look at my advanced task killer,, on avg of 15+ things are open, 1/2 of which I don't use or touch....
Any way to improve on the battery life without rooting/custom rom?.?

Well i got my battery to last 17+ hours on average. Granted yes i am running a custom ROM, but you should be able to hit pretty close to that. I had to teach myself about wakelocks and installed and used a combo of GSam Battery Monitor, Better Battery Stats and a CPU Spy.
I have a drop of 5% for 3 hours last i really tracked it. Since you don't want to root....you cannot use better battery stats which shows you more in depth what is keeping your phone awake. But luckily GSam Battery Monitor can see wakelocks too, just not in depth. then use CPU spy to see how often the phone goes into deep sleep. GSam can also show you what apps (like Facebook) is constantly running.
What i noticed is you save alot of battery by putting everything on manual sync and turning Google sync off. Put phone screen brightness down to 20-40% ( don't always need it at 100%). BTW Bluetooth does kill alot of battery
Don't use task killers, 99% of everything shown is task killers are active processes, if you kill those tasks.....they will restart and waste battery trying to restart. you can only stop those from running when you are rooted.

[Q] taker vs juicedefender

which one is better for battery saving?
tasker seem to have more option/variety but too many option/variety can be a problem sometimes. and there alot more you can do with tasker so that a bonus
juicedefender is mainly for battery saving but the options can get quite confusing.
any good tasker profile for battery saving? or what do you use your tasker for?
any good setup for juicedefender?

in all honesty, juice defender is not needed. tasker on the other hand i dont think you need to use for battery savings. if you're on a custom rom and you dont like the battery life, flash a new kernel. i did that and since then i've not used juice defender since its not needed and battery is great (leankernel 5.4 on liquidsmooth v2.2 4.2.2) :good:
JuiceDefender doesn't even work on the new JB builds. Even when it was working, it was mediocre on a good day.
Tasker, on the other hand, is an amazing application. But don't bother with trying to save battery with it, though.
I'm pretty sure die hard battery savers don't use "battery saving" apps. The only apps they'll really use are kernel and voltage controllers. Even then, there's a list of other factors that contribute to battery, from screen brightness, use, having dark themes, and other stuff. Additionally, being in an area with GOOD coverage will save you battery as well.
Things like juice defender as far as I'm concerned are pointless gimmicks, like virus scanners and such.
would underclocking or undervolting help? and how to go about it?
Don't bother with that either. If you are having battery problems get BetterBatteryStats from the party store.
Honestly if you want more battery the buy an extended battery or the same size battery with more capacity than the stock 2100 mAh

You cannot get more capacity out of the same size for it to be noticeable...The only time it would ever be 1% more is if the China after market batteries had thinner battery walls of which would be likely unsafe for that extra few mAh in capacity...so even China doesnt do it (they dont care about your capacity). OEM is the max capacity you can have for a stock size. JD does help if you configure it right using the advanced settings. Also, it only helps you when your phone is off.
Battery savers never worked for me. But there is one app called GREENIFY (it's a root app) which hibernates the apps that normally would run in the background and saves me TONS of battery power! Best battery saving app I've ever used. Well worth the investment!
