Rooted the phone and lost 3g. I still have data the data signal says 1x. Can't for the life of me figure this out. when I switch back to rooted stock 3G comes back. help?
You were probably on 1x the whole time. Sense lies and doesn't show 1x. It only shows 3g all the time, even when you're not actually on it. AOSP ROMs accurately portray what data you're on.
So I should probably try an aosp rom and see if it changes? it was really really slow everywhere we went. We have great 3G coverage here and it was turtle slow consistantly.
CM7 is AOSP. There's a change that your 3g isn't working properly, but when you were on sense, there was really now way to tell by looking at the signal what your data connection was. Only by how fast your internet was.
You can try doing a speed test, then in the same place, restore/flash a Sense ROM and test it again to be sure. CM7 and other AOSP can be finicky with data. If you find you actually should be getting better data exactly where you are, you can try doing a full wipe and reflashing CM7.
What version of CM7 are you using?
On a sense rom, try typing ##3282#
You will need your MSL - download MSL reader from the market.
Then pick data profile, push menu and hit restore.
this worked for me when I first got my EVO.
Good luck.
CM7 stable. Ill try the MSL trick, any version of a sense rom in particular this works on?
This is my first time doing anything on a sprint phone. My personal phone is on T-Mo. This is my roomates EVO. Everything up to this point has worked flawless, just this slooow data has me concerned.

It should on any sense that is based off the EVO rom. Ported roms like Warm Z or these new gingersense roms with sense 2.1 don't seem to work. Just slap on sprint lovers and then nandroid restore back to your AOSP rom.
Much thanks guys, I'll try all this when I can get longer with his phone lol.

My god I can't believe I never tried this. Went from 100 kb/s to 600 kb/s, often hitting 900.
Still sub-par to other carriers, but so much better than before at least.

This only works on a sense rom, but download msl reader from the market and get your msl. Then in the dialer enter ##3282# and click edit mode. Enter your msl when it prompts you.
When the menu comes up, click a advanced. Scroll to the bottom and change the one that says 8085 to 0. Then change the one that says pd.vog.sprintpcs.com to 0.0.0.0

What exactly does this tweak do?
Update.
So I could not get sprint lovers to flash. I tried flashing both ways with both roms (full you flash from the bootloader and simple without radio from recovery) and it failed both times. I went ahead and flashed the rooted stock and tried the ##3282# and the dialer locked up.. home button worked, the pull down worked, the dialer didnt work. So i waited about 5 minutes and still no menu or pop up or anything like that. What am I doing wrong.
Edit: Speed test shows 0.5-0.7 down 0.5 was in my apartment 0.7 was out in the open in a known location to get great 3g signal.
try restoring it back to sense on clockwork mod. and do the tweak. after let the phone reboot. Let it do its hands free Activation. and afte that you shoul hav 3g on cm7. worked for me a few hours ago. i got 1.5 mbs in miami florida with 3 bars of 3g on cm7. very happy =]

With all the excitement going on with the Wimax being alpha tested in the CM ROM it got me testing my data speeds the last few weeks.
From my understanding 3G speeds should be decent and range between 1 - 3 mbps down, and using Sprints 3G network I am not coming close to that.
I am using the SpeedTest.net app for my results, and I have read from some posts that the app might not be that accurate.
Here are the results that I have been seeing (displayed as Mbps) using the closest server to me (Random Lake, WI - even though other servers are giving me the same low scores):
1/6/11 - .18 down and .37 up
1/6/11 - .16 down and .30 up
1/2/11 - .30 down and .77 up
12/27/10 - .45 down and .27 up
12/27/10 - .34 down and .27 up
12/27/10 - .12 down and .20 up
12/24/10 - .45 down and .70 up
12/24/10 - .15 down and .62 up
As you can see, not close to the 1 - 3 range that I would expect. I am checking that the icon is showing 3G and 1X when doing the test as well. Here is some information to help deduct and (hopefully) solve my issue.
My EVO is from release day, not the 004 hardware
I'm running CM 6.1.1
CM stock kernal that comes with it - 2.6.35.9 [email protected] #1
Theme is Project_Bliss HD (modded by me to include some different emoticons and Batman themed notification shade)
I have flashed all of the latest
*Radio - 2.15.00.11.19
*Wimax - 27167_R01 (even though where I live has no 4G)
*PRI - 1.90_003
*NV - 1.90_003
I have flash a Sense ROM and update Profile and PRL
I live in Appleton, WI area if that matters at all.
So am I just looking at my results wrong? If I'm not, what are some solutions that I can look at to improve my 3G data speed? Any other test I should run or try?

Are you having any issues?

A lot of those results look like they could be from when you were connected at 1x speeds. Sometimes it seems like the status bar icon doesn't update quickly for the change in network type. Also, how strong of signal do you have. If you're at the edge of data coverage, the rate might be low because a lot of packets are getting lost in transmission. Have you seen what your speeds look like in other locations? In my home town I regularly get over 2mb, but when I was traveling a few weeks ago in some places I could barely pull 300k.
I have check all over town since my apartment is further away and gets lower strenght. Im getting the same results close or far away from a tower.
Sent from my EVO (CM6.1.1) using XDA App
i started noticing this with my evo aswell, actually about yesterday, my stats are about the same in the OP, i live less then a mile from the 4g tower, i've even been about 200 yards away and gotten crappy 4g signal, anywhere from only 3-4 dl, and barely 1 ul.
Hopefully this helps. I was also experiencing 1x speeds although the phone indicated 3G. I upgraded to an EVO after modding my Hero for the past year. Thus I was pretty comfortable with rooting, installing roms, etc. within 24 hours of getting my EVO I decided to root it and try out some of the roms available.
Almost immediately after rooting using unrEVOked I noticed signiffigantly slower data speeds. (I'm not pointing any fingers, only documenting what led up to this) I first tried out the latest CM6 rom. Upon booting it indicated 1x speeds though posts that I read stated that you are actually recieving data at 3G speeds. I think that CM6 may actually be reporting the data connection accurately while the sense rom is not. Using speedtest.net's app (I know it dosen't report speeds accurately) I was consistently recieving between 80-160 kbs download and 60-100 kbs upload. I then downloaded the same app to my wifes unrooted EVO and ran a side by side comparison. Using the same server and within seconds of testing each her EVO was downloading at 800-1600 kbs download and 600-1000 kbs upload while mine was still recieving at the afore mentioned speeds. I tried updating PRL, profile, running the stock rom to no avail. I then tried RUU and unrooting without any change.
I was convinced that either Sprint was throttling my connection or the transmitter in the phone was defective or damaged. I was ready to return the phone to Radio Shack where I purchased it last week but I decided to call Sprint and inquire about the throttling issue first. Sprint assured me I was not being throttled and they also thought I may have a defective phone but they asked if I would perform a ##DATA# before returning it. Amazingly enough this worked and my data speeds have returned to 3G speeds of around 1000-1400 kbs download.
I'll detail the procedure but I make no guarantees this will work for anyone else. Also you'll need your MSL, there are guides that detail how to obtain this or you can all Sprint and ask nicely. Also I did this while stock and unrooted and I haven't tried to reobtain root again yet so if this works for you while rooted let me know. Finally I believe you'll have to perform this using the stock dialer as I don't believe that the CM dialer will work for this.
Procedure is as follows:
Open dialer and type ##3282#. (##DATA#)
You should now be taken to the epst prompt. Choose "Edit Mode"
You will now be asked for your password. This is your MSL
Next you want to choose "Data Profile"
While in Data Profile hit the "Menu" button at the bottom of the phone.
Next choose "Restore" and allow the phone to reprovision.
Let me know if this works if you try it while rooted as I'd like to reroot again but I'm a little gun shy now that it's fixed again.
I'll give that I try and see what happens. I have to flash a stock ROM first and hope that any changes follow me along back to CM ROM. I am also going to try the Wimax kernal to see if that helps since that ks reporting to be a possibility.

this sorta helped me a bit, but i just also ended up flashing back to 1.77pri and nv, though i still have the latest wimax and radio and 60674prl on myn's rls5, however i'm still experiencing way below average data speeds as compared to what i used to, i have a release day evo with 0002 hardware, and .76 hboot, even my 4g's are slower then what they used to be.
FWIW, I experienced a drop in speed as well. I used to get 1-2 Mbps easy. Now all I get is around 500. Very strange.

i really hope your right, i mean the other day with cmWimax i nailed a 7.61, now i'm lucky if im even in the 3 range for moar gee's, lol, even with reg sense rom's i'm barely in 3 range as well, i have a tower that is only about 200 yards away that is 4g and it still suxor's.
I haven't had a chance to test the above, I'm about to start to do that.
I did try out Sprints Network Speed Test and got results from it above 1.0 finally. Then I tried using the speed test app and it was giving me location in Europo to test? This morning it is back to normal and both the speed test app and Sprints website both were giving the same results - around .80.
I'm going to flash the Wimax for CM and see if that helps out. If not, then I'm going to flash a Sense ROM and do the #DATA# trick listed above.
Here is the website for Sprints speed test website. You'll need the latest Flash installed from the market for it to work.

i have noticed though with this release of myn's that i do keep dropping 4g and reconnecting, something that i have never did before on other dev's rom's.
Well, both attempts to fix it didn't work. The new Wimax for CM didn't give me faster speed and the flashing to Sense ROM to do the ##DATA# didn't help either.
Anyone else have any ideas?
I know someone here has wanted to do this at one time or another. I've searched to no avail. I was previously on the 52078 PRL issued Nov 6 2010 (last time I did a *22899) and decided to update my PRL a couple of days ago. The newest issued VZW PRL's are 52219 & 52220. So I got 52219. Now I get no 3G at home. Drive 2 miles down the road and 3G is good.
My wife was on 52078 and had 3G fine....just like I always have since owning this phone in April 2010. So I updated hers to the 52219 (like the idiot I am) and now she gets no 3G at home. 3G is fine though down the road 2 miles and beyond.
Veriz tech service said they can't do anything about this.
Although our dBm strength is better than it has been previously we don't get 3G in our home just 1X
We are in Atlanta GA so no hybrid Alltel PRL applies here, but I would like to downgrade back to 52078 or anything before as 3G was always present since owning this phone. I know how to get into her PRL setting ##778, but can't find a place on the web to download PRL files this recent. ONLY THESE. She is on Virtuous.
I however, am on CM7 and ##778 doesn't work for me.
Any advice is much appreciated

I know that to get ##778 to work you have to be on a sense rom. You can nandroid your CM7 setup, flash a sense rom, ##778 and set it up with that, then reboot the phone, then restore your nandroid. The settings you applied with ##778 will still apply.

I used this method http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=723829
There are others PRL's available, and the means to change them are listed.
hth
I had 52219 and was showing being in an extended network with no 3G, and couldn't *228. I googled and downloaded 52220, still showed extended network but had 3G but would drop to 1x often. Finally found a Verizon/Alltel hybrid, 65144, and that put me back on Verizon's network with full 3G. Easy to do through ##778. Mind you Alltel doesn't provide service in my area either, go figure???
Thx for advice guys. My 3G randomly came back and hasn't dropped since I believe it was Verizon's issue not my phone, PRL, or ROM.
This is great information, thanks everyone!

i agree cool stuff here!
So I recently had to get my evo replaced by sprint and the new one has just painfully slow 3g download speeds; we're talking like 40kpbs with >1000 ping, although uploads aren't bad and in the 300kbps range. WIMAX also seems to be ok. I've tried manually changing PRLs, different ROMs, but to no avail. Anybody know what could be wrong?
A fix
I'm not sure your exact situation but I root phones for a Sprint store and lately I have come across a TON of phones that have super crazy slow 3g speeds. The fix that works for me is to reprovision the phone on the network and just like that speeds are back up to normal.
Dial ##3282# on your phone.
Select edit mode.
The password is your MSL number. Download "MSL Reader" off the Market to get your MSL number... Its free.
Go into "Data Profile" then press MENU and choose "restore".
Your phone will reboot and reprovision upon reboot.
That works for me every single time. I just wish I knew why its been happening recently and not before. Is this a Sprint error or me flashing a bad Rom. Either way, it works for me.
I actually ended up doing something similar--I just had to change CDMA mode to "Auto" under the EVDO menu and it went back to normal.
Sooo...I just did this, and after a reboot, I am not getting a data connection. WTF did you do to me brother..?
There is a whole thread about this already:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=933900
I understand that. It didn't help me though. I even did a restore, and I still don't have data.

##3282# restore worked for me too!
I had been suffering 50kps down for months and was sure it was a network problem as people have discussed here. Then researching again and I again, I came across this solution.
After flashing Fresh to run the ##3282# restore and then flashing back to the mod rom, I get close to 1mpbs down again! outstanding!
If you are having slow 3G speeds, try out this solution before resigning yourself to waiting for sprint to fix a network problem.

You're most likely not doing anything wrong. I assume you're using an AOSP rom. Aosp roms show your true signal, if you're on 3g or 1x. Sense roms show 3g all the time, even if you're on 1x. Sense lies to you. Aosp shows the truth. Although there is now a mod that allows you to see true signal on Sense as well now.

A PRL is a "preferred roaming list" and has nothing to do with data speeds unless you're talking about data speeds when you're roaming. Do you mean that you are getting no 3G coverage at all?

Are you sure you are getting 3g at all? Sense doesnt tell you when you are on 1x unless you grab an app for that. Are the 1x culprits all aosp and you are just under the impression you are getting 3g on sense when in all reality you are not? Run a few speedtest.net tests and let us know what your speeds are on both on both. I doubt your speed changed.
hmmm...interesting....well im running MIUI...but its weird...because i used to get good signal...i wonder if maybe this is tying in too all the problems it seems a lot of people are having...im gonna run the speed test right now and see
signal and speed arent necessary related, though i believe aosp does calculate that into theirs. On sense it is (almost?) always separate. Anyhow I have only seen a few phones get "stuck" internally at 1x, no worries that would also be fixable.
You may just be having tower issues, thank sprint for that. Another good question is do you get 3g on a diff tower? drive out of the range of your current tower and see what ya get.
yea im gettin a steady 1x from home all the way to work which is about 15 miles away...
my first test:
Ping: 558ms Dl:125 Ul:148
second test:
ping: 807ms Dl: 126 Ul: 140
3rd:
ping: 786ms dl: 126 ul: 143
im not too knowledgable about this stuff....but i feel like the numbers are good right?
No, those are def 1x speeds. Sprint average is 540k. Being that you have used multiple towers i would assume its the phone. Grab easy settings from triforce, luke and see what the settings are. If you cant get back to 3g you may want to grab the 2g/3g toggle from triforce, luke for a buck and set it to hybrid or evdo only and see if that works. Its the only thing that helped me once.
I tried profile restores, other prls, everything. Have you tried any other prls? I wouldnt suggest a profile restore because you dont have 3g and it needs that to provision.
Have you gone into ##3282# (sense rom), and cleared your profile data (top item, then menu IIRC). This will cause the phone to reboot, and do an OTA activation on the subsequent boot.
Have you messed with your 3g settings - meaning, is the device being forced into cdma mode only??
Which rom did you specifically flash?
And I guess most importantly, before you did anything, did you ensure 3g/4g work with the phone in its stock state?

I had this same issues awhile back and the quoted text is what worked for me.
you can try a profile restore but it may not activate well without 3g. Sprint told me that themselves, so have others...though it did activate for me, i have seen people get stuck though for a bit...
well...from what i understand i guess i have no idea if 3g was working before...i know 4g did work fine...and it still works weather im using the wimax setting on a sense rom or even before i rooted it....so somebody give me a run down of what to try...i read a lot of those suggestions...and to be totally honest...i have no idea what too do...like i said im kinda new to this whole thing
nevermind...i found the thread with the whole step by step process...thanks for your help guys...i got it up and running
My speed tests are returning obnoxious speeds like 700ms with 0.1 down and 0.4 up. (Measuring in Mbps.) It is absolutely ridiculous. My wife's LG Optimus S gets 130ms/5/3.5 running at the exact same time, side by side. I can't figure out what is going on. I've changed the radio, updated the PRI, changed ROMs and kernels. I'm running out of ideas and I really hope it isn't a hardware problem (don't want to be phone-less.) The only odd thing I can find is that my PRL version is 01115. But I don't think that really has anything to do with my 3G speeds but odd none the less. I found a screenshot that someone else has a PRL version over 6xxxx.
I dont put much stock in those speed and benchmark tests

Youtube constantly buffers and web page loading is abysmal.
have you tried the "tweak" that is in the dev forums? the one about removing the proxies from the data config.

If there's any testing that's viable is the speed tests. Benchmarks are the useless ones.
I didn't think I had problems until I tried someone's suggestion on the Mik forums.
On your sense rom;
dial ##3282# > choose edit mode > when prompted enter your MSL number* > choose data profile > hit menu button, then choose restore
This process will reboot your phone, reactivates handset, and updates profile and prl. It'll try to update firmware at the end too but I just hit cancel after that showed up. After I did this, I was getting 3g speeds of over 2mbs when I was previously getting less than 500kbs.
*download the MSL reader app if you don't know your MSL number
I tried the fix and no change. I have already cleared out my profile more than once with no change. I'm consistently getting 0.1/0.4 now.
Edit : Just flashed to an entirely different set of radios, PRLs, and so on. Now I'm consistently 1000ms/0.3/0.3.
Spent an hour or two on the phone with Sprint last night. Most likely going all the way back to stock everything, doing one last test, and then dropping it off at their store. Nothing we tried did anything at all. Nothing I have tried has done anything at all. Out of ideas.
If someone has any last advice, let me know. I'd sure be happy if I could get this damnable thing working without going through the unroot process and such.
Have you tried the new radio? Its version 2.15.00.04.08. A lot of people have gotten faster 3g including myself.
