Warranty Replacement - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So my phone has a few scratches on the supposedly unscratchable screen and I'm thinking about doing a warranty swap for this. Which of the following issues would probably be more likely to net me a warranty device?
Meh hinge performance.
Poor data connection constantly switching to/from edge.
Actually those are the only two issues I actually have. Any suggestions on what I should say to actually get a warranty device?
Also, please please please no comments on whether this is shady or not. They end up making their money back on selling my phone as a refurb or just shipping it out to someone else as a warranty device. They can fix the scratches, I can't.

Who said the screen was unscratchable?
And if you have the insurance plan, they'll replace your phone no matter what your issues are.

Tons of youtube videos. I wasn't stating that Tmo or HTC specifically said that, just that it was a sentiment expressed multiple places on the net.

Its amazing that you get your p's and q's from people posting youtube videos. Did they engineer the device? were they on the assembly line putting the device together? Are they related to someone in the r&d department? If the answer is no then I hope you will think a little harder in the future. Its glass...

God, you guys get snarky quick. Yes, I do actually trust a bunch of people on youtube. Why? Its not machines stress testing and what not in a controlled environment. Its a bunch of people taking keys to their screens and thumbtacks and nails and not making a dent. So if I just place mine in my pocket and a few months later is has scratches, I'm concerned.
Thanks for (sort of) answering my question.
Also, minding one's p's and q's refers to typesetting and how it was especially important to pay attention to the orientation of those letters in order to ensure correct placement in print. I'm not sure how that idiom has any relevance to my question.

I'm just saying that mine scratched a lot easier than what I've perceived is other people's experience.

Sorry, but I just don't see how you can possibly get it fixed under warranty. Neither HTC or T-Mobile claim the screen is unscratchable and as such they'll just call it user damage and give you a price to fix it.

meh... i work for warranty for att.. i assume tmo is similair they dont really care what the issue is. as long as one of them makes you eligible for the exchange.. say your phone screen flickers sometimes.. or its completely black, your your capacitive touch buttons don't light up all the time, or keyboard doesn't like up all the time.. the key is to have a sporadic issue. that way, when they get it and test it.. it CAN have the issue and cannot. which i know a guy who used to work in an warranty center where the "independently test your returned phone" he says thats bull**** and they test a "sample" and **** others out.. thats probably why you will get a phone that has issues worst that you already do.. but luckily if you keep gettin ****ty phones you can eventually trade it for a g2x. or mytouch 4g. if you wanted any of those devices ofcourse.. and yeah, kinda common sense if its NOT labeled as gorilla glass.. it will scratch. lets be smarter than the average joe here and use our head. its not diamond.
anyways... its best to have an issue that cannot be troubleshot easily. like screen is completly black.. lights don't light up, you can only hear people when your on speaker phone.. ear piece doesn't work. something like that.. if you don't really have an issue i wouldn't suggest getting an exchange. just my 2 cents.

oh yeeaeh.. they do charge for physical damage. which includes scratches to the screen. but it their just light you should be fine. wear and tear is acceptable. =] ofcourse like i said.. i work for att.. but my exchanges ive done through tmo i had chipped paint and you could tell my phone had been dropped. never had an issue.

People said things on the internet that might not be true??? Shut up!!! And on YouTube???
Lolz.
Nothing is unscratchable. There is no such thing. The hardest substance known (except for a couple super-rare minerals) is diamond, which is easily scratched with another diamond.
Corning themselves does not make any claims about Gorilla Glass being scratchproof or even scratch resistant. They just say its "highly resistant to damage".

Its called a 2 strike policy with att... tmobiles is different thou. No phone company is gonna keep sending you the same phone over and over.. with att (which I work for) after they send out 2 replacements.. so your on your third phone that has issues. You get a 2 strike. Different make and model.. which you can choose from a phone in the same tier.. which the provider gives you options and you pick from them. With tmobile.. I believe you have to do 3 exchanges in 90 days.. and they'll send you out something comparable.. seein as the G2 is one of there top tier phones I'm sure a galaxy, mytouch or Gx2 would be an option. just gotta know how to work the system...

Tmo/HTC refub quality

I am on my second replacement device from Tmo for my G2, and it is also messed up.
Come to find that my phones have been bricking due to an aftermarket battery, hence the exchanges. I have tossed that battery and use my original shipping battery. the first replacement the screen flickered a lot when the screen faded before turning off, the hinge was better than my new one prior, but still a tad off. this one i just got has a missing pixel, and the hinge seems a tad misaligned as well, more than the other one...it taps a bit when typing on the screen instead of hardware keyboard, which my original new one did soon after purchase but not as bad as the original one.
anyone else having issues with refurbs like this? what have you done with tmo to get the situation rectified?
That's why I don't bother sending my phones in. They give you someone elses old defect

i agree, but i cant afford 500 bucks for a new device right now.
tmo offered me a sidekick 4g with android, a mt4g black, or a HD7 as a replacement if i didnt want another G2 refurb. for ****s and giggles i asked about the G2x they were out of stock. I really need the hardware keyboard
Sidekick 4G isn't bad... same size only downside for me is
NO FLASH for camera. But other than that its decent. I think G2 is best qwerty android smart phone.

I guess there has been a grand shift in how good sidekicks are? They were generally known to be total junk.

Supposedly yes but its still inferior to the g2 overall except maybe the processor.

I checked out the g2x today at the store, its nice and I may consider it, but I read a lot about the issues it has and makes me wonder if its worth it yet or not. Even the store reps are saying they are just swapping them no questions asked.

Well tmo for now won't budge off of the mt4g or the hd7 as my options over another g2, so ill be getting another phone shipped to me. Let's see how this one ends up doing.

just keep sending the phone back until your satisfied thats what i did . took about 5 times till i get the right one. make sure its made in thailand too cause the one from china got some yellow tint on the screen .

I agree, but its irritating to have to keep doing it. Just remember you have to keep doing it within the first 30 days of the exchange so you don't have to pay for express or any shipping again. Eventually ill end up getting a better alternative as tmo will have to realize the cost of these exchanges would exceed the costs of a brand new phone.

Light leakage, and other stuff

I was wondering if Sprint would replace my evo with light leakage, weak vibrating motor, and it also has like visible dust under the front facing camera.

You think so? I'll give them a call tomorrow and check, I hope they just replace it. But don't know how long that's going to take.

thanks for the info
Just a thought, ask them to just replace the screen. They usually replace the bezal as well, or at least did on mine. It may cost you $35+tax, but you will still have your rooted evo and not have to wonder about what you get. If they are not busy, it would only take 1/2 hour or so to do. the gyro for the vibration may be another issue, just a thought...good luck!
FYI, they "should" replace it due to those issues, but ONLY if you are in your 1 year warranty. After the one year, sprint doesn't do anything to the phones except update the software. Anything like this after the one year must be done through Asurion.
Well I really don't know if its still in the warranty cus I bought it off eBay and thought that the TEP would cover everything. And for the screen problems and motor, I'm just looking for a new one maybe, free.
And plus I received it with the latest OTA so it doesn't matter cus I don't have root xD

Wifi problem SOLVED (acc'd to sprint rep)

I just had the best conversation ever with a sprint rep. This was an in-store tech person, mind you, so all of my facial expressions were more than obvious.
The conversation went like this:
Hi, my E4GT is having some wifi connectivity issues. When I try to connect, it says connected but then keeps scanning, and in fact, it's not connected at all because I can't get a webpage to...
(Interrupting me) WAIT RIGHT THERE...let me see the front of your phone, turn it around! (I do so.) Yup, that's the problem...you downloaded something to make your ANDROID phone look like a WINDOWS phone.
You mean a launcher?
Yes, it's an unapproved app, and you corrupted your whole system. You need to delete that and hard reset. Don't make it look like it's not an Android phone...otherwise you corrupt the system.
(My face has a wtf are you serious look on it at this point.) Oooooh-kay. Um, are you sure?
YES! ABSOLUTELY! Also, I bet you have checked off install apps from unknown sources, don't you?
Yes...so?
THERE YOU GO AGAIN --- COMPLETELY CORRUPTED YOUR ENTIRE SYSTEM. Now, anyone anywhere can just go into your phone and access everything. That's why you can't get online.
(Now my face has the wtf look on it as well as a little bit of anger from this rep having somehow survived this long in her life, and in doing so, disproved darwinism.) So, you're telling me installing the amazon appstore breaks our phones?
YES, it's an unapproved app, just like that one that made your phone look like a windows phone!
But, that app's from the google market...??
I BET YOU'RE TETHERING TOO, AREN'T YOU?
(Damn, she got me there.) No! What is tethering?
Someone will come up and tell you to tether...go right ahead and do it if you want, but you'll be corrupting your entire phone again and it won't work.
Ok, thanks, this has been a big help.
You bet! Thanks for coming in!

I once had a verizon droid incredible with a screen that literally moved when you touched it (this screen hardware itself physically moved, not anything on the screen). Took it into a Verizon store and the rep seriously asked me "did you try doing a battery pull?" I was just like wtf does a loose screen have to do with a battery pull.
I don't know where they find these people. When I apply for jobs there I never even get an interview, I think I fail their personality testing during the application.
I don't even understand how people like that can get hired. You would think they would require at least some basic knowledge of the industry and products. I am actually looking to change careers and would like to get a position managing a sprint store but I can't seem to find an opening in my area because they keep hiring people like this. I have been to four stores in my area and every single one has not one person who seems to know much of anything. Maybe its just the central florida area.

Normally, I would say this story seems too far out there, and that there is no way someone is that clueless as an employee at the Sprint store.
However, I have dealt with some of the Sprint store employees and I guess it is feasible.
Either way, thanks for posting as it was an entertaining post.
Thanks op that was classic, I seem to run into these people all the time. Awesome
I had a similar thing happen at Radio Shack. I had bought the Photon there and before my 30 days were up I wanted to trade it for our SII...on launch day they didn't have any so I told them I wanted to return it and go to Sprint to get the phone. The salesman said why...the Photon is dual core and a much better phone...I immediately told him it was none of his business and then proceeded to rattle off the specs of the SII..he went into the back room. These people are clueless!
Haha I purchased an app called HVAC Buddy for work and a sprint tech told me it broke the gps in my Moment. Wtf

All of FL, bro...I'm in the ft laud area myself, and it's harder to find a glimmer of intelligence in the general population than it is to find a guy who doesn't shave his chest here.
anyway, just fyi, it's an absolutely true story. the worst part, which I forgot to mention in the OP, is that a couple minutes before this dolt began "helping" me, I was talking with another customer who had an E4GT with some crazy problems (phone with a mind of it's own...would just randomly open up apps and close them and restart...) and I was telling her about this forum and how her problems were atypical and how she should just get a new E4GT...and then every time this stupid, stupid customer service rep talked, I had to just look over at this lady and hope she knew how completely retarded the rep was.

No need to apologize on their behalf...it's the same at every job and every profession. It's just a shame that people don't say, "sorry, I don't know," when they don't know. But, on the bright side, it does sometimes make for some funny ish when they talk out their ass
Walked into my local repair center and showed the Guy my OG Evo, told him that I was having some issues with the fact that my $400+ phone had a crack in the casing near the volume and power buttons. He immediately told me "you dropped your phone and it cracked. that's not covered sorry." and proceeded to the next customer. I walked up, showed him again my phone was in an otterbox defender case, had NO signs of damage... mind you I kept the case on since day 1 and I had never dropped the phone....
He looks at me with the straightest face and says "it is because you are using a Facebook IM application which causes the problem." at this point I laughed in his face, left the store and proceeded down the block to the next repair center.
This Guy still works there....

HTC One X Call Quality - Pathetic

This is a mega rant. I have had the phone for about 2 months now, and always thought the issue was only with my device and i should give it to the service center, which was always delayed because of something or the other.
Now recently i suggested the One X to another friend of mine, and he did the same to another friend of his.
On all our phones the microphone quality is just pathetic, the person on the other side of the call is always complaining of the call being muddy or muffled, so to speak and i sound pretty much illegible most of the time.
Though a little bit exaggerated maybe, but im super pissed!
This is what i mailed them :
The microphone quality on my HTC One X is seriously disappointing. I cannot remember one call in which the person on the other end has not complained about my Voice being "muffled" or "muddy" and completely illegible. In fact i am not the only person facing this issue; this has been mentioned in a lot of reviews as well. But i never could have imagined that this issue will be so pronounced!!
I am using a Vodafone connection in India. Exact location is NOIDA, UP (NCR region).
I tested a friends phone as well, and the exact same problem!!! His phone is barely a week old! (He is on Airtel btw.)
Not only am i regretting getting the One X over the Galaxy S3, but i have to bear the constant nag from my friend to whom i had recommended this phone over the Galaxy S3 (AGAIN!).
I have owned the Nexus One, the HTC Desire Z, the HTC Sensation, the HTC G1 and the HTC Hero!! I have always loved the amazing build quality! But one thing that was flawed in all of these devices was the earpiece volume. Though that could be managed with.
HELL! My 3 year old Nexus One sounds crispier!!
And no I have not reached any conclusions by just calling one no. or phone.
I tested the call quality by calling the One X (and calling from the One X) the following devices:
Motorola Atrix / Motorola DEFY / Samsung Galaxy S / Samsung Note / Samsung Galaxy S3 / Nokia Lumia 800 / HTC Nexus One / Samsung Galaxy Nexus / Samsung Nexus S.
It has been 2 months since I purchased the device.
With the One X the ear piece quality was fixed, but the microphone quality just went down the drain!
I cannot even use the phone as a PHONE! ?
I think I just wasted Rs. 36000 ($650) on a top of the line “HTC” device, which is soon going to be “replaced” but the rumored “HTC One X+/CL” ???
Is this how dependable HTC has become? It has been barely 6 months since the HTC One X was released and a new top of the line device already in the works? Is this how the premium customers are treated?
I know that all I will get out of this “rant” is a typical –“We are sorry that you are disappointed with the device and request you to get you device checked at the nearest HTC service center mail”, but I really had to get this through, because I really feel that my trust in HTC as a competent manufacturer of quality mobile devices has been broken and is un repairable.
Im ordering the Galaxy S3 as soon as I reach the US next month to start my PG studies there, at least I will get good support for the money I spend. And most of all will be able to use the phone as phone.
From here on I will not recommended the HTC One X to anyone or as I should put it as- any HTC device from now on.
I am sorry, but I am just throwing away the phone into some drawer and will be using a cheap Nokia phone, which again has far better call quality, than my $650 HTC ONE X! , till the time I get my Galaxy S3.

AND NO I AM NOT USING A CASE WITH THE PHONE! The bloody camera lens is already accumulating scratches.
Are the scratches magically apppearing or are you pocketing the phone with keys and sand?
Sand or fine dirt will foul up the Mic and scratch even gorilla glass.

My LCD is fine, there is a screen gguard applied on it. the scratches on the camera lens though are because of it protruding outwards of the back body. so whenever iI place it on a hard oor alight dusty surface.. the lens makes contact and gets scratched.
This really isn't of any concern to me. I will as it is getting a replacement BLACK back panel.
Also the Mic ports are perfectly lint or dust free.
I totally disagree, I've just recorded my self talking and it was crisp clear, could be a network or radio problem, I do remember reading that one of the radios was rubbish in a certain stock rom, try recording your self?

Trap that was thethe first thing iI tried myself.
The Mic recording quality is top notch to say the least... but this is when recording in PCM. Which almost impossible to use for transmitting over a network call.
Try calling youself from another phone... mute it (the other phone) and then try speaking to yourself. Compare this with the recording.
Over the past iI tried swapping the radio as well.. even tried different RIL combinations. Still no change.

Yeap that is why the friends One X on a different network.
This is not a new thing... it is just too pronounced in my case.
I just Google's - Htc one x voice muffled.
And found that even a lot of reviews state that the call audio is muffled.
I really hope in all of this ,that I am wrong and it is just a netwrok issue.
A friend of mine has the same problem with his One X.
It's definitely a hardware issue.
Just left my self a voicmail and it was as clear as the recording, maybe hardware variances who knows

My mic is working fine (yours not), my camera glass doesnt scratch (yours does), funny isn't?
Btw you had to mention SIII in your first post isn't?
LoL hahahaha.... :cyclops: another troll or representative to my my opinion, nothing more, I mean what else are you looking for here? :victory:

Ok my voice is pretty bassy, but no-one has complained about my voice being muffled at the other end since May.
I just recorded myself and it sounds pretty fine.
I can understand why you're pissed, despite all the shortcomings of any smartphone its basic feature i.e the phone should be fully functional.
But if you're saying you AND two other friends also feel the voice is muffled that's messed up ****.

Well call me whatever you want I dont care .... I love the One X for what it is. Just mighty pissed because of something so basic.
Why did did I mention the S3 in my post you ask ?
If not the ONE X then WHAT ELSE?
Your signature answers the question.
And you might want to check my post history.. that'll probably give you more proof over the "troll" crap.
Also I prefer Sense over anything. That is why I'm running ViperX and not CM10.

Hmmmm...thanks for the input man. :good:
There must be something with the Indian networks here which is messing things up badly...
Only choice is to wait till i get to the US and try the phone there.
Now I'm beginning to feel that I might been a little too hasty.
Ok sorry, probably I'm wrong but I'm getting nuts people keep mentioning SIII in there first post.
If you have a mic problem go claim your warrantee, what's keeping you?
My mic works fine, calling does work fine, could it be a operator issue you and your friends are facing?
Also my camera glass or screen doesn't have any scratch, I feel like I'm the only one in the world LoL.

Well my LCD is perfect even after having used it without any protection for a month
Love the screen Nothing comes close! PERIOD.
Thing is that they are on a different netwrok and i am on a differemt one.
As far claiming the warranty... well I'm leaving for the US in 10 days. and I'm prettyyyu sure that they are going to take atleast 15 to even get a repair done. I don't want to get the ATT one X ., no matter what! Can't afford to get a new one due to obvious overheads of moving to a different country...
Ah chuck it. Ill go bloody order a Jabra Street 2. While I wait for HTC to revert back.

If it helps, I've used the phone in the UAE and India(!dea and Vodafone) I'm on Idea right now.
Can you try to describe the muffling a little better? Does your voice get muffled real bad i.e people can't understand jack-**** or what?
And yea warranty will take long, you won't be able to claim warranty in the U.S either. I can't claim my UAE warranty in India unless I pay $30 for shipping to an International HTC Service Center.

Broken plastic trim

Factory defect or are they going to say I caused this? the phone was never dropped and shows no signs of being dropped. I can only assume this is a result of taking my phone out of the case often. I have a tech21 case and I do take the phone out daily. Either way T-Mobile said they would credit me the charge if any. I just wanted to get some ideas on how this happened and what you think they will say caused it.
View attachment 2713012
Well it's plastic, weak plastic for that matter. I remember that my Note 2 trim was damaged from removing a stiff TPU case a few times.
Maybe Samsung should quit producing theses phones with plastic trims.
Mine broke in the exact same place yesterday. I haven't used a case much at all but I did think that when I have the taking in and out might be the reason.
I never got insurance with t mobile so didn't think about taking in. I guess I can live with it for now. Maybe put a case on
Grande Note 3
That type of breakage is from user error.

And that post was from an idiot. Unless you can prove your comments please leave them to yourself. Still laughing as I finish this post. I Used the phone to make calls improperly..... my kung fu grip is too strong?
.....but your the one with a broken note 3. Now it's ugly lolll good day to you sir ?

True, I dinged my volume rocker to the point that it bent. Took it back to Costco (you get 90 days return there) and swapped it out for a new one. I hated just knowing my volume rocker was dinged on a brand new note 3.
My advice working for tmobile tech support (the guys that exchange your phone). Your worrying too much, this is a manufacturer defect. They will not charge you a out of warranty fee as long as the rep notes that it NOT user error.

No matter how many times you may throw insults, the fact of the matter is, that damage is from user error, and now you'll be receiving a refurbished phone that someone else probably abused, like the one pictured in the 1st post lol. Good luck on your refurbished phone ?

How's the new one you got?
Mine lasted 6 months not a scratch, no chipping and worked fine until this happened over the weekend. if it is happening it to everyone in the same place its a stress area that wasn't picked up during testing. I can only assume it had to do with case removal. Can someone else that did not have this problem confirm they did or did not remove the phone from a tight case on a regular basis? A store rep looked at mine and asked if i sat on the phone which I never have.
How did you get your phone replaced? Does t mobile have insurance for this sort of stuff?
Grande Note 3
Not trying to be a [email protected] but if you broke it from removing a "tight" case, then it's your fault. If the case was other than an official Samsung product, it's your fault. It's a defect if you open the box and the crack was there, or suddenly you looked at it and the breakage manifested before eyes without your intervention none whatsoever. Anything else, it's user error!

I have a business account and have been with tmobile for years so the gave me a one time replacement free of charge. As far as explaining to them how it happened i have no clue. User error ks hard to phathom because these phones should me able to be taken in and out of the case i bought from tmobile. I am not even sure thats how it happened because it did not break in front of my eyes. Good luck. And to the troll if a refurbished phone bothers you how do uou have sex with women other than virgins. That beat up ***** has got to bother u more than a previously used phone.
Well now I wont be surprised in the future when this happens to my phone too.

In my statements, I never implied any similarities between women and material objects, YOU did! I place women on a much higher pedestal than that! I'd also like to add that I've never had a problem accepting a refurbished phone over a new "only" and "only" if I know for a fact that it'll be a greater gain for me to trade in my original unit which I know has only been used by me. You on the other hand allowed your phone to get borked. Next you come here and post photos which clearly shows the breakage was caused from some type of stress or tension applied wrongly, which you are responsible for, and you wanna shift blame and yell defect! You defected the phone by not being careful as you should've. But hey there's no reason to be mad. You got you a refurbished Note 3 which more than likely most of its mileage are from the previous owner's bathroom usage, but I guess we'll never exactly know that, but hey as long as it works, right lol? ?

I've not had this problem. I rarely take it out of the case. Pretty much the only time would be to do a battery pull which is seldom. Case was a slip on type which is fairly tight.
No breaks on any parts so far and I've had the phone since Oct. I don't use the Stylus often either though.
