If hardware dev. read these threads... - Windows Phone 7 General

If any hardware developers read these threads can you PLEASE put a button/switch on the phone that locks all the other buttons other than the camera release?
I was at a concert the other night and I wanted to take a picture or two. I pressed the camera button to go into that mode and changed all the settings to the way I wanted then when I brought the phone up to take a picture I pressed the inconvenient "back" button on my Focus. ARGH! I had to go back into the camera mode again, redo all the settings again and once again, pressed the "back" button AGAIN! It was pretty embarrassing that I had to keep bringing up the camera mode then redo the settings over and over again. This happened not once or twice but throughout the night. If that's a feature that Microsoft wants, then I think it's a crappy one. I finally got fed up and just enjoyed the concert. Maybe that's why they made things so inconvenient.
Can we have at least physical buttons instead of "buttons" that need to be pushed instead of ones that only take a swipe of a finger to activate?

Sounds pretty familiar

capacitive buttons are ****. hopefully with mango you can save camera settings though

How to automatically turn on and unlock when pressing camera button?

Is it possible to configure the camera button on Hermes/TyTN with Windows Mobile 6 to automatically turn on the backlight and "unlock" when pressed?
Currently, it takes five actions to take a photo when the phone has been "locked" and the backlight has been turned off:
1) Pressing the "power" button to turn on the backlight.
2+3) Pressing the "unlock" buttons twice to unlock.
4) Pressing the "camera" button to start camera application.
5) Pressing the "camera" button to take photo.
Ideally, taking a photo should only require pressing the "camera" button twice. The "camera" button is sufficiently small and hard for this to work safely.
I expected this to be a common request but I have been unable to find any info or even requests regarding this anywhere.
Kinda defeats the purpose of locking all keys if the camera button can be hit by something in your pocket, etc and activate a full backlight with the camera running. That would be a battery waster real quickly...
As I already wrote, I find the "camera" button to be sufficiently small and hard for this to work safely - except maybe if you have all kinds of hard items of junk in the pocket, too - which I don't and which would probably ruin the screen before the battery runs out making that the least of your problems.

install s2u2, that will provide slide to unlock, one less press! Another better idea, don't set your phone to lock when in standby mode as your pocket has nothing. So, there is no need to lock. That would bring down to 3 press.

That's a bugger - power switch

Anyone else accidentally pressed the power button whilst using the HW keyboard? It's a better power switcdh in that it's easier to use, but it's also more sensitive and when I'm holding the phone in two hands and typing, I've accidentally hit the power button a few times.
It's still a million times better than the TP though.
But aren't you supposed to push AND hold it for it to power off? Or do you mean that any slight touch and it turns off the screen?

I've not done it myself no, but it comes up with a warning before switching it off anyway.
I've done it quite a few times .. you accidentally nudge the button and the screen goes blank ..
yeppers, im doing it but am learning not too lol
i'm starting to do this too! quite frustrating sometimes!
I was going to add a poll to see who could clock-up the most accidental-power-switch-whilst-typing hits but I can't see a way.
So I'll start the ball rolling:
3 (so far)
I've done it 7 times since yesterday.
4 of which were in a 10 minute gap last night when I couldn't figure out why my screen was switching off by itself. I was getting ready to RMA it when I remembered this thread and slapped myself.
I've already lost count of how many times I've switched the screen off, really frustrating!!
This is the only niggle I've come accross so far that I cant fix easily... I'll have to chop off my left index finger! lol
Funny. I never accidentally turn it off
I guess it's the way I hold the phone that's different than you guys. Because I can't think of a way why you can accidentally press the power button!
When I have it in landscape mode, I automatically wrap my forefingers around the back section of the phone (much like holding a videogame controller)
This causes the section of my finger closest to my hand to rest on the power button by accident. A small movement of my finger to the right will cause it to press the power button.
I only have problems with the volumebuttons when sliding open the keyboard...
Hi,
I'm going nuts on this, as well. Isn't here any app, that just disables the power button when the keyboard is in use?
Cheers,
Zivi

What, do you use your feet?
I've had the same problem also quite a few times already. First couple of times I was really scared some contact was loose or something!
I agree on the powerbutton beying annoying
I vote also for some kind of hack, like disable power off when the keyboard is out. As some of you already mentioned.

[Q] Long press power turns on the phone?

I turn my phone off a lot when I travel to save power. I've noticed that only doing a quick press turns the phone off from a cold state which is very annoying when i'm just trying to make sure my phone is off like I did in the WM days and currently do with my android device. I'm wondering if this is restricted to my device (HTC 7 Pro) or it affects all WP7 phones.
Does this annoy anyone else? I've written to HTC so if it annoys you too please complain so we can get this changed!
My Focus requires a long press (2+ seconds) to turn the phone on. It sounds like your problem may be HTC-specific, or something is wrong with your particular phone.
Thanks for the head's up, my complaint has been forwarded to the dev department of HTC so hopefully they fix it soon.
my arrive turns in with a short press I think, as well as my tp2 and other HTC phones I've had. doesnt really seem like a big issue to be concerned over. the accidental turn off issue was resolved in the mango beta and powering off really isn't necessary just a switch to airplane mode or enabling battery saver.
Unless I misread the OP, his concern isn't with accidentally turning off the phone, but accidentally turning it on, since it seems that accidentally bumping the power button on an HTC phone will turn it on.

and I've told him that it's not necessary to do that in wp7. I don't get people, first they were complaining about the power button being too hard to press now it's the other way around.
l find that if you wanna check your phone..rather than pressing the power button press the camera button. If its on it'll go to the camera app. If its off it'll stay off.
I have never complained about the power button being too hard, I just checked and my TP2 does this too which is annoying. It's really not a difficult thing to implement and I should be able to conserve as much battery as possible without having to resort to flight mode only.
For now I'll use the camera button idea (thanks!) however ironically enough I have to long press the camera button to see if it wakes up, go figure...
Q&A is that way.... ---->

[Q] Buttons Don't Work While Phone Is Asleep?

When my phone is locked (screen turned off), the volume rocker and camera buttons don't work. With my Samsung Focus, I could use both while the screen was completely locked. Is anyone else experiencing this?
For camera button, there is a setting (in Settings->Camera) to turn it on or off while sleep/locked.
My camera button doesn't wake the phone if I force sleep while in an app, such as the xda app. If I force sleep from the home screen, I'm alright. If I leave the app in the background, it works OK. However, like some others have stated, in order for the camera to wake the phone, you have to make sure you're not spending time on the intermediate position of the button, it has to be pressed all the way down quickly. If you take too long to do it, the camera will not wake the phone.
At least, this is how it is behaving for me.
Setting's correctly set, and I have been pushing it down all the way and holding it... Sometimes it does work, but there doesn't seem to be a pattern. Maybe my device is defective.
Anyone able to adjust the volume settings with the screen off?
Same with my camera button. After update, it's about 85% accurate. Before, it was 25%.
Volume does not work when off.
PS: Samsung Focus 1st gen doesn't allow Volume when screen is off, unless you applied some hack or custom ROM that did that. I just turned mine back on and tested to be sure.
I think what you remember is that when the Lock Screen was active, you could use the Volume Rockers, and that still works on the Lumia.
Huh, maybe I was just remembering wrong...I'll have to test it when I get home tonight...
Hi,
I can confirm operations as described above. With the phone locked, the volume rockers do nothing. You have to press the standby/lock button in order to get the screen to come on, and then you can use the volume rockers.
I have not tested this with my HTC HD7 on TMO, but will and get back to you.
As far as the camera button waking up a locked Lumia 900, you have to press and hold the camera button for a second and then press it again in order to get the camera app to load if the screen is locked. This won't work if the option under "Settings --> Applications --> pictures+camera--> Press and hold camera button to wake up the phone" is set to off.
Again, it isn't a simple tap, you have to hold it down for a second, and then press it again a second time for another second or two and the camera will turn on.
You'll see a little pad lock in the lower left if you have the phone horizontal and in the upper left if you have it vertical.
I don't know if this is how all the Lumias work, but it is how I can get the camera app to work when the phone is locked.

This, among other detrimental things, have just started happening on my 900 today. It worked fine for the last 5 weeks & now it's become pretty much ****. Would rather trade it in for a Titan II than do an unreliable hard reset.

While locked and screen off my volume rocker and camera buttons do work, same as my HD7.

An unreliable hard reset?? You had me there until you mentioned an HTC device. Reliable does not include the letters H-T-C.
Well said. Sure wish I could quote again. Come on Board Express. Fix what you broke damnit.

Same here (except the HD7 part, of course). I do find I have to press the volume rocker once, then hold it down in order to change volume, which strikes me as being by design to avoid accidental presses.
Concur with lowlymarine... 2nd press needed on the lumia 900. 2nd press not needed the HD7... slight nusiance, like a dialog box popping up asking 'are you sure?'

S Pen Question

Hey guys,
Is there a way to completely disable the S Pen to not write/do anything when it is in the air? It drives me nuts cause i can't control it and just scribbles or clicks on things when i don't want it to. I really just want it to click and do things when it is on screen..
Cheers in advance
simple, return it for a warranty
S-Pen
Hi
Go to ‘Setting’ - ‘S-Pen’ and turn off ‘Air view’.
A question to you: Do you have the problem that I have? If the phone goes into sleep whilst I'm reading something (this only happens at night when the ‘stay awake’ camera doesn't see me) and I wake the phone with the home button I go to the home screen and not to the last viewed p-ge. The only way I get to the last viewed page is if I wake the phone with the power putton.
Pressing the home button, just wakes the phone does not take me to the home screen. May its the app you are using, I am reading a PDF using Polaris.

This problem occurs if you freeze S-voice or disable the "Open via home key" in S-voice settings. You can unfreeze s-voice or re-enable the open via home button to get rid of the problem.
It's annoying, I know. Happens to me as well, since I disabled the double click to open s-voice because it induces a lag in the home button.

I've turned that off already. It still doing it though
The tip of your spen is stuck in, most likely. I saw a video of a guy tapping the end of his spen to unstick it, kind of swinging it. Best to get it replaced though.

Possible solution
This is a solution to the infamous S-Pen hover/pressing problem (where it will register a press when it's not touching the screen!)
I tried turning off air view, tried tapping and moving the pressure sensor tip... nothing seemed to fix it properly .. nothing except adjusting the potentiometers in the s-pen
The rough guide:
1. Remove the button from the s-pen (a sharp blade in the middle and levering up should do remove it but be careful it doesn't fly off somewhere unknown!.
2. Adjust the potentiometer (variable resistor) closest to the stylus tip (the writing bit). Turn it clockwise to make it less sensitive and CCW to increase it. A few degrees should be enough.
3. Replace the button - put the tongue side in towards the stylus tip and then rest the button on the stylus. Press the raised end towards the tip and down.
Test (actually you might want to test it before you do step 3!)
A big thanks to kevie88 on YouTube for suggesting it in a comment - a quick web search seemed to confirm it. I made a how to video that might help someone.
I called Samsung support and they are sending me a new s-pen anyway so I thought the above method was worth a go
