[Q] Non processor intensive live wallpapers? - G2 and Desire Z Themes and Apps

Hi Everyone,
I've been testing live wallpapers recently and I've noticed that most of them increase CPU load by an unjustifiable amount (either in terms of high CPU usage or decreased UI responsiveness).
Is anyone aware of any minimalistic live wallpapers that don't cause the abovementioned issues?
Thanks!

I'd like to hear about this as well.
So many live wallpapers don't get the concept of a "background." They're cool to look at once, and that's it. Why do live wallpapers have to mean dead battery?

When I used to use the default android launcher I used to use lwps and not really experience any lag or high battery drainage. I used live walls like nexus, seeds of life, sense, and more. The most battery drainage came from kittyface or whatever they're called. Launchers like ads and launcher pro are pretty much incompatible with any lwp. I experience so much lag if I even try to use it.

I'm using the on with the waiving grass and that goes dark at night. Don't notice a lot of battery drain from it.

I saw that one aswell, the grass one. Not noticing any drain.

That's cos it doesn't do anything - a few blades of grass move now and again
I think this is yet another area where Android's promise is not backed up by it's capabilities. I'm not a programmer, but surely graphic work like this should be handled by the GPU? Oh no, we don't have proper GPU hardware acceleration everywhere yet (like every other decent platform) :-(

Actually, i have used the Beautiful Widget Live weather wallpaper. This one has the grass but also you can see clouds when the actual weather is cloudy, etc. It's pretty sweet.

the fact that you are still using a task manager, shows me your non technical attitude.
he was not asking for any live wallpaper, but for the ones not using too much cpu...
the beautifull widgets lwp drains battery and causes quite some lags.
its nice but is the exact opposite of what he asked for.

Yes, I am an Android newbie (user since january 2011), and maybe your right about the drainage and lag (hardly ever used the wallpaper before, but I didn't notice it drain that much and hardly noticed any of the lag). I just tried to be helpful, your reaction is a bit harsh.

It does look nice. But hardly eye-candy that you would show off to your mates, like Solar Winds LWP, which is my favourite

Using MIUI and never get lag. Using beautiful livewallpaper. Lol been an android user from the very start of G1.

I've come to enjoy Day of Ubuntu. It's not killer on the battery, and for me personally, it seems to make ADW-EX run smoother than a normal non-live wallpaper. Then again, it isn't constantly moving like other live ones, but it's pretty minimalist in that there isn't too much going on.

popsquares...wave live wallpaper... theres a hexagonal one thats like popsquares none of those take too much power or anything and they can be as intrusive or as un-intrusive?? as you want them to be

LOL are you kidding me? - Using the phone will kill the battery. Unless you have brightness down all the way and using a black only theme this post is useless. Who doesn't want to show off their phone. Plus we are talking about perhaps a 10% difference in battery drain at most.

I think white on an AMOLED screen is of much greater concern than battery life.

I also know a lot of people who like to customize their phone (theme and such) just to impress others.
To each their own I guess. I personally couldn't care less, therefore, a white theme is pretty much horrible due to the batterylife. And no, the difference is not a measly 10%, far from it, very very far from it.
I personally like the look of the white theme. The original poster requested a white theme and hopefully it will get done.
If anyone does not like the white theme there is essentially no reason to reply to this thread.
There are plenty of posts here to keep everyone interested, we dont need pointless negative replies.

Guys, you both have no idea about battery drain of white amoled.
Check this forum out:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=660853
It states if you are starring at the BACKGROUND for 1 hour, you have significant battery drain. Now I ask you, how much you stay on the main page when you use your phone? I personally check time, and click on icons. That's all. The rest, browsing, games, applications, movies, reading, calling are all different colors, so I'd say don't bother too much about it.
I agree that the battery consumption would not be too much. Maybe make it a little grey.
The white status bar may help in remedying the burn in on that area.

Yes,that's exactly what i am saying,it will probably be launched in last week of May but it will be by June only when it will be available all across India.
Don't go by any bull**** retailers date{or anyone who is saying & spreading this false news of it's launch on 1st May}.
Network 18 Tech Guru,NDTV Gadget Guru,Times Now,iGyaan all these prominent Indian shows & Forums were there at Samsung Asia Summit held in New Delhi & have hands on with SGS 2 but they all have clealry mentoned June as the month of it's launch in India.
I hope it turns out otherwise, but i do not see it happening.

As the op mentioned, its called the htc sense mod launcher, but underneath its adw launcher. I used it on my sgs1 as well, and whats cool is you can also download the sense launcher themes that work with to change it up a bit. I hope the creator of it updates some of the features to make it more like the one from sense 3.0. that will be epic.

You've tried it on your SGS2? I did, but it seems that none of the modifications make that much of a difference, unfortunately . Pretty weird, since the Galaxy S 2 uses, from what I know, exactly the same touch screen as its predecessor (Amtel MaxTouch or something).
Wonder how much effort a port would cost.
It seems samsung patched that on 2.3.3. After updated to jv5, touchscreen booster don't work on my sgs1 too.
Unfortunately, I have never used this apk on my Samsung galaxy s 1. So I wonder; does this screen booster make your phone get rid of the split second screen delay? (Noticeable when you navigate very slowly with your finger on a webpage, 0.3~0.5 seconds after you initiated your gesture the screen jumps to your finger and starts following. If so, then this phone is on the same level of smoothness as the iOS devices (well, that's what I think).
I don't know if anyone else noticed but the SGSII also has Touchscreen lag(a pretty bad lag I would say, around 0.1-0.2sec delay).
The lag is VERY VERY noticeable when playing games which needs fast response like Fruitninja, Modern Combat 2 etc.
On my old DHD and iPad these games were really enjoyable with 0 lag! Hopefully some Devs can look into it and find a way to fix it.
Well..for now i guess i will just wait and pray.

That is false, I tested it and it does not work. To verify this, install "Multitouch Tester" from market and run it(maybe any other touchscreen test tool will do). You can easily see the lag while sliding your finger over the screen, cuz the circle simply cannot catch up.
And this lag does not exit in DHD or any other LCD devices i guess. Hope it is not an AMOLED input lag.
I wouldn't say the touchscreen is slow, it's actually very fluid in tracing your movements. But try and tap on your screen in the touch-viz app, tapping quickly; I can manage to touch the screen without registering a touch... No doubt there is a slight delay. But I it's not a deriving from the use AMOLED screen technology, others android devices I've seen suffer from this delay as well. I guess it's just part of the overall android touch calibration. Most touchscreens mange to house response times below 0,001 ms I once read~
Btw. People in different forums are complaining about the slight delay as well. For some of them the delay is even more noticeable. Maybe a future firmware update can solve this “potential downfall”.

Samsung is talking about the claimed sub-1ms display response time of the SAMOLED+ display itself - this has nothing to do with the touch substrate or its related delays.
All displays have some delay from the time the GPU sends a signal until it is shown onscreen. Sammy claims that this screen is among the fastest ever put into a device. For reference, good desktop gaming displays aren't that fast in response time, nor are good HDTVs.

Reason why I uninstalled it when I had my HD2
not for me I want 24 hours in intensive use and about 48 hours normal use
SPB shell 3D is the best it lacks the update that's all.
I already bought it back in my N1 days, unless you play for long periods with the home screen it doesn't affect your battery. (The max i have seen it in the battery stats was 1%) .
It was good on the N1, but on the SGS-II it has the nasty habit of leaving iPhone user speechless after showing in :-D

Whatever the feature they have, the price of this launcher is so unbelievable..........
Heh, I love that people spend hundreds on a phone and then complain bitterly about the relatively minor cost of an application. It's elaborate and well done, the expense is only really noteworthy because so much else on the market is cheap/free. SPB Mobile Shell for WinMo was more expensive, albeit more easily cracked.
As my sig indicates, I'm a fan. The widget suite is excellent, and the screen transitions and animations are fluid and natural (especially the folders). It doesn't affect my battery life whatsoever, and is the only launcher that operates as smoothly as Touchwiz when laden down with my default widget layout - I've tried and liked Go Launcher Ex, but have found it too stuttery after a while. Also own and enjoy ADW Ex, and have experimented with Launcherpro & the various Touchwiz options (Come to think, I've tried more or less every launcher available to date), yet keep coming back to SPB Shell.
The reason for this is that, unlike previous phones, I'm sticking strictly with a function over form layout. Sure, I could have a slick minimalist page with nothing but a clock and have to swipe for anything useful, or hide all my shortcuts in invisible widgets, but...why? Having had an HD2, I've tried all manner of Android variants, and SPB reminds me distinctly of the Sense suite of widgets and apps. I like Sense quite a bit, though I preferred the WinMo TouchFlo hybrid, and wish the Android flavour was more like that rather than the space-wasting dock bar Sense has at the moment.
Of course, I do love customisation, so I'm hoping SPB will open up their amazing-looking UI Builder to the public soonishly (although I don't think it's terribly likely, so a leak would be fine too). That, and I'd like a few of the widgets from the beta to come back - it had a really neat way of integrating the existing clock and messaging shortcuts with the widgets. Overall, I'm pretty happy with the way it is now. It meets my needs, though I understand it's not for everyone - especially not those that love super minimalist layouts, or those that bemoan the relatively minor cost of an app suite.

[Q] How to get the most of out Gnex Battery

So I've tried various things, disabled apps I don't use such as Email, Exchange Services, News and Weather, and even disabled the Gallery app and using QuickPic instead (on GB, Gallery was known to waste battery for no reason). Also turned off data and connected via 2G only to save battery, have brightness the lowest possible, turned off auto sync, and yet, still don't have near as good battery life as on my GB running LG G2x.
So my question is, what do you guys do to get as much battery life as possible?

jk. what kind of battery life are you getting? Maybe run stock?
Ha it seems to not have to do with the wireless settings at all, drains either way.
And with GB on LG G2x, got 12 hours of constant, heavy use. Music, XDA, Pulse, FB, some gaming, texting all day, definitely used my phone.
Now, with AOKP+Franco, getting around 8 hours of light usage, just messaging and music. Wi-fi on for not even an hour, and didn't play with it much.
And maybe I'll give that a try, I just love all the options in AOKP.

Might try Apex, battery lasted nicely if I remember correctly the few hours I ran stock. Apex is basically stock, with tweaks and customization.
I know for most phones, AOSP and similar based roms almost never provide as much battery life as the stock software w/wo tweaks. There are some exceptions, but maybe ICS is different. Going to flash Apex and tell you how it goes tomorrow.

try the "on deman" governor , it worked very well for me...
Yeah there's nothing you can really do man. SAMOLED just takes up so much more battery than our old G2X's IPS. That's pretty much the only difference. Probably nothing web can do. I bought 3 spare 1750mAH batteries plus an external charger all for 13 bucks to compensate. That's the only way for me to fix my battery issues.

Seriously? I thought SAMOLED used up less battery than the IPS. The major reason I bought this phone was for the screen... Ha.

Oled uses more energy than LCD. You fell for the marketing. They are relying too heavily that black doesn't use energy but who uses all black screen?
...of the people, by the people, for the people...

That's crap, this is literally the first time I've seen anyone say this since I got my Vibrant. Seems like they tricked so many people...
That's true, I keep try to keep everything dark, gonna have to invest in a extended battery I guess.

It is what it is. It could improve in the future, but oled has more visual advantages than LCD. I wouldn't get my panties in a was over it though. And just to throw it out there, bigger pled screens use more energy than a comparable LCD because of the pixels that are lit. The LCD screen is more constant because of back light.

Thanks for that, will definitely keep that mind when buying a new phone down the road. Hopefully not too soon.

It appears that at lower brightness values, it's not the screen that's causing power drain. Though indeed, current S-LCDs are about 3 times more efficient than OLEDs when displaying white at same brightness.
not bad for me
