[Q] GPS problem - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

As title states, i'm having a problem with my GPS. I can't get any gps lock on my phone. GPS test says its turned on, but I cant get any satellite.
I somewhat doubt that it is a radio- or software problem though, since i also do not get a GPS icon in my notification tray.
Am i just going to have to send it in for repairs, or could this still be something i can fix myself?
I'm running a rooted/s-off DZ with CM7 nightlies installed. I dont usually use Gps, so i cant say when it stopped working for me.
-------
Solved by flashing different radio

Just to run through the easy questions:
Have you tried a soft reset?
Have you tried a hard reset?
Are you in a place where your phone has a clear view of the sky? (ie outside, on a clear day)
have you tried opening google maps, or something else that will make your phone look for a lock? (gps isn't locked on all the time, only when it has to be. Otherwise, it'd kill your battery.)
Are you using a non-stock battery? Someone on here said that when the larger battery was pressing on the back of the phone, he couldn't get a gps lock.
is anything else pressing on the back of the phone? a tight case, etc?
try running this app while you're standing outside, just to make sure it's not trying to do its thing.

I've tried a soft reset, a hard reset and a factory reset. I've also used GPS status to reset the gps settings and downloaded the a-gps stuff.
I can only get a lock in google maps when i've got wifi/network location on as well, and no gps using app can get the gps icon to show up in the notification tray.
Using a stock battery, so i'm starting to suspect the gps chip is broken
GPS Test just sits there saying its on, but not getting any satellites. Doesnt matter if i am inside or outside, it wont give me anything.

Solved.
I reflashed a different radio and its working again.

Which radio did you flash? I'm having thee same issues.

I flashed the 26.06.02.27 radio, which i found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=970809

[Q] GPS freeze Ginger Villain 2.1

Hi all,
I have a problem with my GPS signal.
Normally (pre rooted era) I could switch on the GPS and get a fix. No freeze whatsoever.
With Gingervillain 2.1 I switch on the GPS and check the signal. I see several bars before the signal freezes. Tried flashing different radios but this made no difference. Also tried several radio / ril combinations same result.
At this moment I found a sort of workaround by switching on Google navigation and then switch on GPS. Check the signal with GPS Status and u usually get a fix within a minute (even indoor). After that I switch on Navigon to start driving.
It is not really a problem this way but what can I do to solve this problem. When I look in the threads (CM7 / Gingervillain) the GPS problem should be solved. Are there more people with this problem? What could be the best solution.
I have CM7 and no issues. I don't know what the problem is. Could be the rom, could the radio, could be other problems. It is too vast really. The only way you could fix it is to try different roms and see which one works. But like you said its not much of a problem.

Thanks for the reply,
Yesterday I switched to the latest radio (32.56.00.32U_5.17.05.08) and RIL (2.2.1003G).
As long as I start Google Navigation first and then switch on GPS no problem. This morning I drove to work with Google and Navigon switched on, no problem (30 min drive). Even switched off Google and Navigon kept the signal, no problem.
Whenever I switch on GPS first it looses track somehow. Can't figure it out..
Is there some keep alive GPS flow in Google Navigation?
No. When you turn GPS on its just on and idles. It needs to be used but I don't get how it doesn't work right. Grab an app from the market, GPS essentials I think and see what you can do with that.

With GPS essentials it works, better than GPS Status (think it has monitor function only). Think it has something to do with keeping GPS alive
Tried it from work - home, worked fine. Went shopping same procedure...
Might also be engergy savings mode in Ginger Villain. Batterydrain is less with it I noticed.....
With this working... perfect ROM!!!

[Q] Desire Z can not see any satellites in any rom

My Desire Z's GPS not work, it can't see any satellites and always 0 signal in any app and with any rom. Currently i have CM7 and VISION_RADIO_12.62.60.27_26.13.04.19 with matching rils. So how can i sure that its hardware problem? Maybe gps turned off in sevice menu? But i tryed this *#*#3424#*#* for entering eng menu, but phone can't accept it. Is there any other methods to check gps? Thanks in advance.
I have two ideas which might be worth trying out:
- In case you haven't tried wiping your efs cache, do so. Download the vision_wipe_efs zip and flash it through recovery like any other rom or mod.
- Try going to settings>location>gps source and just check "internal gps" again.
When I had trouble with gps I used gps status, though I believe I read somewhere that it's not the best out of the bunch.

I wiped that partition before i posting here, also i cleared caches and formatted all partitions, flashed a 5 different radios, but no result. Why phone can't accept *#*#3424#*#* command? Maybe its wrong code or its hardware problem? I need to test gps in engineering menu as on my old WM phone. Thanks.
Little background would be helpful. How long have you had the phone, has GPS ever worked (such as on the stock ROM), etc. Have you tried other ROMs? GPS lock has been an issue on CM7 for some people for the longest time.
The Market app "GPS Status" will show if the phone is tracking (or trying to track) any satellites. If satellites are being shown on the circular display, and signal strength bars shown below that, its at least trying to get a lock, and might need more time. If none of those things are shown, it may be a ROM issue or something else.
The following fix gave me a much faster GPS lock on ILWT CM7. Not sure if it will help in your case (no lock at all). But don't think it will hurt. It reduced my GPS lock from a couple minutes, to often less than 5 seconds. I flashed the "Google Specific" build.

You seem experienced enough to know the following "basic" steps. But it never hurts to mention the obvious:
Make sure you are outdoors, and clear view of most of the sky (minimum of trees and building). Give it at least 5-10 minutes for an initial lock. If the GPS has never been used (new ROM) or you've changed geographic locations drastically (like a plane flight) it might take a few minutes to get the first lock.

Phone is brand new, i purchased about one week ago from ebay store. GPS status not show any satellites on circular display.
What ROM was on it when you got it? Has the GPS ever worked on it?
Try another ROM. GPS issues have plagued some CM7 users, but it seems less common on non-CM7 based ROMs. Maybe try Virtuous v2, its close to stock GB.

I dont know GPS worked either or not. Now i probed many firmwares e.g CM7, but gps not work at all. Can't show any satellites.
If you'd like to run CM7 try this way:
- Be sure to enable GPS before you flash the rom. eg: you're running stock > enable GPS > then flash the new rom.
otherwise:
- Flash the newest radio you can find for your rom.
I say that because I experienced the same issue on my Htc Wildfire when flashing CM7.0.3 last year.
Just download faster fix app from marketplace

Reasonable GPS lock workaround w/o root

I've been having the same trouble as many have with the Epic 4G Touch's GPS. It takes forever, if ever, to get a GPS lock. I can have a GPS lock, go into McDonald's and come back out and it will be cold starting again. Ridiculous performance.
Rebooting the phone is a pain but seemed to be the only thing that worked every time. After reading a lot of different forums about this problem, I noticed a conservation that speculated that the problem wasn't specifically the GPS itself, but rather was location services. Apparently there are some more recent location services being flashed to phones and the GPS works great. It would make some sense that this is the problem because after a reboot I would think that the phone would reset location services when it turns back on. Further comments in those threads suggests that turning the phone to airplane mode and back also works around this problem.
I've been playing around with this for awhile today and it does appear that going to airplane mode and back helps the situation. I used Tasker to create a task that does this: turns on airplane mode, waits 20 seconds, turns off airplane mode, then launches GPS Test automatically. I created a widget icon for this task. I never attempt to get a GPS fix indoors. What I do is that when I walk outside on the way to the car I hit the widget. I let the phone do it's thing and by the time I get in the car and ready to go, I've had a GPS lock every time today. When I get in the car, I close GPS Test and start whatever app I want to navigate with.
So far, this method has yet to let me down. We will see how the weekend goes.
That's very interesting, I'm gonna try that and see if it helps. I also noticed that getting a lock by starting Navigation right away is almost impossible. It always helps me to Getty a lock with another app first. Telenave seems to work best for me.
This (among the countless others) workaround is fine and I thank you for it.
However I'd really like to know just what the hell is going on with the gps on these phones.
Some folks are fine with the gps working fine in any circumstances. While others have to wave dead chickens and performance some sort of incantation to get gps to be even reasonable. Still others have some issues but can work them out via flashing of modems and what not. Some had to replace their phone with another e4gt and it was fine there after. WTF?
The gps on my old GS2 i9100 was awesome. I never had to give it a second thought or worry about it losing gps lock or taking eons to get even a meager lock. This is entirely not the case with my current E4GT. Damn thing. If the update doesn't fix anything then I'm gonna replace it.
Is there just a batch of bad hardware out there? Is the gps sleeping when it shouldn't? Why does one fix seem to work for one phone but not another? Talk about manufacturer inconsistentancy, geez.
Does the sprint version of the galaxy nexus have these sorts of issues?
Heavy sigh.
Try GPS Status, it's available on the market. I just got a lock on 8/8 satellites within 5 seconds inside my apartment.
Google maps seems to take a little bit longer obtaining a GPS lock but after running GPS Status it seems much faster.
I believe that it does not require root, and the best part is that you do not have to flash back to GB, to get a lock so that you can flash ICS again.

Why flash back when this is easier?
There is no reason to have to flash back to GB, check out this article I found with a quick google search.

I'm blue in the face over this issue. Invariably, you get "I get a lock on 12 satellites from my concrete bunker 12 feet underground" responses (not helpful, BTW), yet I can't get a lock in the wide-open spaces. UNLESS, I reboot, start up GPS Test or GPS Tracker, or bounce back and forth from airplane mode, murder a chicken, or whatever.
It's totally hit or miss with this device. Yes, I can get a GOOD lock indoors, but only after I reboot, run GPS Test, and then go back inside. Not exactly convenient when you're hurtling down the freeway at 70mph.
It's frustrating to hear of the great experiences of other users when my experience has been so inconsistent. I rely on my GPS for directions, and for tracking my morning runs. It's a real pisser when it takes 4 minutes for the GPS to finally lock, which ruins any useful statistics for Runkeeper.
I know this is just a rant, but at least I feel better.
Try what I mentioned with GPS Status from the market. It might not be a permanent fix but it will help with getting a lock on your location.
1. Download GPS Status from the market.
2. Turn on GPS.
3. Open GPS Status.
4. Bring up the menu and select tools.
5. Manage A-GPS State.
6. Turn off GPS from the toggle in the status bar.
7. Select the option to Reset.
8. Select the option to Download GPS assistance.
9. Close the application.
10. Turn GPS back on and watch it lock on.

I agree, after all my research and attempts at fixing my phone; the only option left to me is replacement. I'm tired of reading forums about it (yet here I am) and it's whole thing is just silly.
I don't suppose you have any documentation on the serial number for the phone that had a ****ty GPS? It would be awesome if there could be some sort of documentation of which patch of phones is bad.

[Q] GPS does not lock at all

Yes one of those threads again, I do apologize in advance..
The GPS on my E973 is useless, I tried the GPS status app and its trying to lock for 30 minutes now, doesn't work outdoors, indoors, anywhere.. I checked the settings, everything seems correct, A-GPS data is downloaded..
I'm running stock 4.1.2 but rooted (GPS wasn't working before root either).. Tried this app: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=44113974#post44113974 but it didn't work..
My previous phone (GS3) had exact same problem whereby GPS would not lock at ALL. The only fix that worked was NAM REBUILD in one of those Samsung hidden menus, it fixed the problem and GPS would even lock in my basement!
Are there any similar fixes for LGOG, can someone please help me out to find solutions? Thanks
bump,
anyone else have GPS issues with this phone?
-----------
UPDATE: GPS WORKS. I just went to settings, opened/closed GPS and made sure everything was ticked off.. Reset phone.. Then went outside and waited for 10 minutes and it locked on.. I used GPS Status App, reset A-GPS and downloaded new data..
However, it took a while and isn't as consistent as I hoped it would be, only locks onto 6/15 satellites... Unlike my friends GS4 and Nexus 4 which gets 20/21 satellites locked on.. Its also not good indoors..
But I'm just glad it works..

[Q] GPS wont lock, no matter what

guys i need help, my phone is LG G3 D855 international (2GB ram)
i cant remember when i started having this issues : my lg g3's GPS wont lock no matter what i do
i recently installed pokemon go 0.29 beta, only to find that i had a GPS problem
enabling a-GPS, restart, wont lock
set location setting to high accuracy (network and GPS enabled), restart, wont lock
set location history on google setting enabled, restart, wont lock
tried downloading GPS status & toolbox, it shows satellites, yes, keep showing around 0/16 to 0/21 fixes, wont lock
tried reset every sensor, calibrating compass etc, and reset a-GPS setting, redownload it, restart, wont lock
tried downloading fasterGPS, set continent and region to nearby, restart, still no lock/luck
yes, my phone is rooted, and i have titanium backup installed with gnss (GPS test) apps frozen.
android version 4.4.2 kitkat, i believe i had a working network connection, also correct date and time
and i waited 5 full minutes (or more) staring GPS status n toolbox app each tries above, outdoor, with clear view of sky
and i dont mess with gps.conf file on root/etc folder except when using that fasterGPS app
any help will be much appreciated
I have the same issue. Nothing locks the GPS signal.
In my case, on v30f Marshmallow Stock ROM. I sended the phone to SAT for repairing a week ago.
The phone is not repaired yet. If your phone still has warranty, use it.
sadly m8, as i stated, the phone is rooted. and it takes a really long time or very complicated process for warranty claiming here in my country
but hey. i just went outside and managed to get a lock. i just found out that apparently, rotating my phone clockwise with the screen facing the sky greatly speed up the fix. however, its just temporary. after a few secs, or whenever i switch to other apps (from GPS stat n toolbx app) the "lock" is gone.
please. if anyone know whats going on or what i had to do, will be much appreciated.
