Taskiller for froyo builds? - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I know taskillers are not needed for gingerbread builds but what about froyo? Someone told me yes but im not sure
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App

Not needed for Froyo.
I think I've read that task killers are only useful for really old Android builds, like 1.5 and 1.6.

Thanks. My wife has the mytouch slide and doesn't want it rooted, go figure, but they just now released a manual froyo update for it. Wasnt sure if it was needed anymore. So much fragmentation. Lol

FROYO on the myTouch Slide!

ARE YOU READY FOR AN OFFICIAL/UNOFFICIAL VERSION OF FROYO 2.2? I know I am!
WHAT DO I WANT FROYO TO BRING TO OUR SLIDE?
I would like the to see the Genius button load up quicker, T-Mobile bloatware removed (that most likely won't happen), the camera/video quality be updated and that overdue 10.1 Flash in our browsers.
NOW THAT I'VE STATED WHAT I WANT FROYO 2.2 TO BRING TO THE TABLE, FEEL FREE TO RESPOND.

it is close...i know because i tried to port it from the Desire Z
Sorry if anyone thought I had FROYO 2.2, I just wanted to bring some energy back for the SLIDE. I know a lot of people lost hope for the SLIDE. We'll get our update. We are T-Mobile's flagship phone! In the meanwhile check out PicSayPro. This app helps out with our camera. It is a really good photo editor. It removes red eyes! That was a big problem for me when it came to taking pictures with Flash enabled. Also check out the myTouch Slide song on YouTube. I think we're the only phone with an unofficial song! Yay! There's also like 2 Episodes made about the Slide. You can see these all on YouTube.

Not to sound stupid, but I thought the Desire Z rom will not work on the Slide because it is a WVGA device and we're a HVGA. Also the Desire Resolution is higher than our rom. I doubt it will ever work unless everything gets compressed and rewritten.

The question is, why does everybody want the Desire Z rom over current Froyo roms we have now? Is the Desire Z rom better than previous Froyo roms?

its better, but everything is borked on it.
Current sense froyo roms dont have buch native customization, but are really stable.

Why don't you do a google search? There's a lot of information out there... even the 250 page Gingerbread user manual has been released.
It's basically just an improved UI with some extra **** added in.
it will make you more awesome and sexier to the ladies eyes, consequently, you will get laid like crazy bro....
I've never received an OTA while running a custom ROM. If you're running rooted stock, I'd keep my eyes peeled for news here before installing it, just in case it will do something to root.
Otherwise, I like to be surprised so I know very little about it other than near field communications will be built into Gingerbread.
Also, Gingerbread will go back in time and kill Hitler.

You won't get an OTA if you're running a custom ROM. But Cyanogen is bound to come out with a 2.3 version way before any official OTAs. I can't imagine it'll affect rooting etc because everyone running Cyanogen will want their phones to stay rooted.
Stevie have you misunderstood Sleef?
Official OTA updates could maybe affect ease of rooting,... when 2.1 landed for the Hero those who jumped in head first and applied the OTA got stuck for about 2 months until a new method was found.

Yeah, I was, no problem. But thanks for adding the additional info, which I should have done really - which is as you say that if course you're on a *stock* ROM and are rooted/S-OFF you should not accept/apply an OTA until it's been verified it won't lock you out of root/S-OFF !
any 2.3 ota will most certainly change the way we have to root, and it might be a while until someone works out how to do it again.
Custom 2.3 roms will be out pretty quick, even if its just a rooted stock so you have no real need to accept any ota that is offered once rooted.
It'll help you get a gf because somehow she'll realize that despite you not owning an iphone, you have gingerbread!
hehe
I probably could have been a little less vague.
Also, I'm positive that someone who knows what they're doing will take the OTA and make a flashable ROM out of it so eager folks can take it for a spin without actually applying the OTA themselves. 2.3 CyanogenMod shouldn't be too far behind.
Also, correct me if I'm wrong, but should the source code be made available, a dev could make a working ROM even before the G2 specific OTA, right?

AFAIK,... The 2.3 source from Google is out,... but the 2.3 kernel from HTC is still needed before anything stable can be built (instead of trying generic builds not specifically for our device so all hardware/features will not work). HTC usually release their source after releasing the update.
Someone please correct me if I am wrong....

I don't think the source code is out yet, just the SDK. Shouldn't need a 2.3 kernel from HTC to make a stable build, I'm sure Cyanogen is up to the job.

Aha,... ok.
I assumed there would be a problem going from 2.6.32 (froyo kernel) to 2.6.35 (gingerbread) as that is where there were holdups on the Hero. Fingers crossed then.
.... a teeny bit OT... Has anyone heard of Bumptop? Or is it just me that didn't know what it was? Google took over earlier this year, and it does resemble the 3d gallery + the Android 3.0 tablet video. Just installed to my laptop,... Very nice, even without a touchscreen. Maybe that is what we have to look forward to next year?
Now that I know I can get ladies with gingerbread this will help me a lot -_-
But those of you that actually put real info thanks lol...I just getting more into android development and just want to make sure nothings gonna get messed up if I do get the ota update..cyanogen I'm sure is gonna have it ready shortly, seeings how they broke froyo pretty quick. In all entirty I was just making sure if wouldn't add s back ok somehow and increase security features.

It could be a very very long wait seein as there are a bunch of new phones for them to pay attention to while ignoring the Dincs.
Go ahead and root, tons of us applied the update manually to 2.2 without issue.
I have a family member working for a Verizon as a DM, I try to get information out of him, all he told me is that the Inc is "supposed" to get 2.3, had no timetable when.
When the Evo 3D comes out and the source code gets released for Sense on 2.3 hopefully the guys over here can make it work on the DInc.
I agree with Ben. Root and get 2.3 now. Why wait for a buggy IT'S when we've been building and debugging the source already.

If VZW releases 2.3 for DInc, XDA ROM-ers will do loads of stuff with it anyway...

Will the Evo ever get a fully functional ICS/JB rom?

I believe what's missing is proprietary code and drivers that can only come from an official ICS/JB from HTC, and that's never going to happen.
So all the ICS/JB roms we have the same issues - camera/camcorder, 4G etc.
Maybe, but the only way we got this far was by the Devs writing their own drivers and code. It's not easy at all to do that.

I strongly doubt it. This is my last month with the EVO (Contract ends). 4G is a deal breaker for me since I use it at home and work, so waiting for it to work on ics or jb its not really an option. Plus I'm getting bored of the only available 4g ROMS.. I need something new to satisfy my flashing needs

Camera and camcorder work on a few roms but wimax would take a miracle.

I don't care about Wimax, its so rare anyways. Proper youtube/camera/camcorder/Netflix is much more important.
Simple answer:
NO.
Just stick with GingerBread.
Newer ones are too laggy for an EVO.

some can be but thats usually the developers fault. The evo is actually a really capable device it just has stupid power requirements. im running jelly bean on my phone and its smooth as hell.
this is the ROM im running Click Me
anyway no its never gunna happen unless by some miracle HTC makes the drivers and the Stock ROM for the evo fully open sourced and HTC isnt known for there open source-ness. OR if some developer somehow finds the free time and motivation to code the drivers them self, The probability of any of these happening is very..very low so low if scaled on a percentage from 0 to 100 the probability dosnt even register a whole number.
thread closed. pointless to be here anymore. we all have our answers

[Q] Why does development on og evo 4g stop?

OK so I have had my evo for about two years now and when I first got it I rooted it. then a while later ics came out and so did ics roms for the evo. but every time a rom would be stable enough for daily use there would be no more updates for it. even though there would still be bugs with it and it continues to be like that. so i mean whats up with that. would it be that its just not worth it to work on it or the devs don't have time? I just want to know out of curiosity.

From what I've read, I don't think the evo hardware can handle many of the features that came with the phone. I'm assuming that is what you are talking about though (4g, ffc, etc).
The problem is, HTC no longer supports the OG EVO. The source for drivers for things like 4G and the FFC were never officially released, so this is why those items in ICS and JB ROM's don't work. If you want a fully-functional ROM, stick with a Gingerbread ROM. Everything works-period.
Sent using my HTC EVO 4G and a magic wand
I also see this a lot too. I wish I knew how to develop so I could make a driver that works for the front facing camera. That is the only thing holding me back from ics and i want it so bad. I think what happens is the dev gets a new phone and wants to work on the newer one, which there is nothing wrong with.

Yeah I want to know how to develop also. I've been working on learning coding and what not. Like the basic stuff haha
The ffc needs a proprietary driver. The one that works on GB can't even be modified to work on ICS(easily) it needs to be about 90% rewritten to function. Writing one from scratch would almost be easier and its not easy and extremely time consuming without a team of devs experienced in coding camera drivers.

Unless you can make a compelling argument with Htc and convince them to release source code lol (hypothetically) Another solution would be to buy an Evo 3d. They have fully functional 3.6 sense roms with everything working.

Exactly, that's why sense 4.0 roms on the Evo 3d dont having working 4g or 3d because htc abandoned the evo 3d and are focused on the evo 4g lte. You can get an evo 3d a lot cheaper than a 4g lte. It is a damn shame I know, believe me.
So as far as the og evo 4g goes the most up to date rom that can be used is gingerbread?
