Faster SMS Backup? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey people. i've been using SMS Backup & restore to backup and restore my texts before and after installing a new rom. Problem is, this app takes a seriously long time, longer then i would have expected. Does anyone have a recommendation for something speedier?

I use backup to gmail, never notice it backing up and when I restore it will take a minute or two for 200 messages

Hold the phone. you can backup TEXTS to gmail?? I've already been using it for contacts and it's fantastic, but i didn't realize it would do texts. Could you let me know how to configure that feature?

Why not backup the app and data in titanium and use that? Normally works for me.

I tried that once and had mixed results. the first try worked wonderfully, the second try and i lost all my texts. I used the same procedure both times.

Hmm well I would say to try it again; personally never had a problem, it could have just been an isolated one time incident.

Yes, you can read all your sms, mms, from gmail too. It's in the market
Btw, backs up your call log with time/date and duration

GO SMS does a good job of what you're looking for, too. Very quick, too, I've found.

But that means it would replace my handcent as an sms client?

Yeh it would replace handcent as ur sms app, but all.ur texts will.transfer over into gosms, n then you could backup from there, personally I like go sms better than handcent, better look and feel imo

I'm a long-time user of Handcent, and I prefer GoSMS now... just looks cleaner, more options, updated frequently, etc. Try it, it does what you're looking for and it does a great job.

I use SMS Backup+ you can backup over wifi and change settings to when and how often you want it to back up your texts. All SMS and MMS are saved to your Gmail account. It will save MMS but not restore them at this time, I don't know if any apps do actually.

Backup to gmail does

Edit. Doesn't restore mms yet

It will restore your MMS messages? That's cool, I didn't know that. SMS Backup+ will back up your MMS with no problem, it just saves them in Gmail. It won't restore MMS to the phone at this time. You have to go back in to Gmail to see them.

If you use adb a lot, I made a little batch file that I run that just pulls the databases and copies them to a folder on my computer-- takes like 5 seconds to backup and restore. This was on my Epic
Hey, is the location of the sms db for the evo still:
data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/databases/mmssms.db ?

it doesn't store it on the phone, it stores it as emails in your gmail, it makes a folder called sms and call log and fills them up with 1 email per message

[Q] SMS over 160 Characters fail to send on EVO 4G

Hello,
HTC EVO 4G running Cyanogen 7.0.3.1 latest release. Will not send messages over 160 characters. Now, I know sms split can solve this problem, but I don't want my texts to be split. I want it to be sent as one long message. Please don't tell me that CDMA does not allow this (like Ive seen in some threads while searching for a solution), because this is not true. This problem has nothing to do with CDMA, I know millions of people using the same phone from the same provider without having this issue. Is there a fix for this.
While we're at at it, ever since I flashed cyanogen, GPS doesn't work, any fix?
Thanks for the help
Are you using a 3rd party app for messaging?

Well if you know millions that can , ask one of them and let us all know. .. Wow he knows a million people.
You need to sms split or get somthing like handcent that will convert messages over 160 to a mms message

No I am not using a third party sms application.
Thank you but I do not want to split messages!
And Ive asked many people with the same phone, it works fine for them, but they don't know how? they're just not having the problem, what benefit would asking them be.
the SMS limit might not be a CDMA thing but it could possibly be a Sprint enforced rule. splitting messages isn't too bad especially since you have that option in CM7.
you need to reset your GPS for it to work. but that can be done two ways.
download GPS Status app and choose reset GPS in the settings (i never tried this)
OR (i did this)
(1) get MSL reader from market and copy down the MSL for your phone
(2) flash back to any Sense ROM, type in ##GPSCLRX# in the dialer
You will be asked to enter your MSL and then the phone should reboot.
after rebooting test to make sure your GPS works in sense and then immediately flash over to CM7.

No text message is over 160 characters. GSM carriers automatically split, then put-back-together long messages. Sprint, and every other CDMA carrier, doesn't do this automatically. Instead, the stock HTC software itself automatically splits, and puts back together split messages that it sees coming in (it's pretty easy to tell a message is split when five messages from the same number come in within 2ms of each other).
CyanogenMod had this added by 7.0.3 (if not 7.0.2) for all CDMA devices, where it would automatically split the messages. Don't know about putting them together, as I just use Google Voice for everything, because IT WORKS.
I do have mine limited to 90 characters and automatically converts to MMS once it exceeded that number. I dont want to use a third party sms program for it provides you two sms notification every time you receive a message. Does rooting solve this problem? Any option on getting it on its regular sms(160 characters). I tried using a third party keyboard input like smart keyboard but it did not fix the issu of 90 characters
Help please!
No, this has to do with the way the SMS messages are actually parsed before sending
You can only fix it if the rom itself has it, rooting wont do any good
But on the 100% stock rom it splits it already? Gosms, handcent, and chompsms give you this function, in case you rethink not wanting to use a 3rd party function
Sent from my PG06100
Before I rooted my evo 4g, it split my messages on its own. When I rooted it, I had to use a third party sms to do so.

If you want facebook stuff out of contacts, open the people app, hit menu then view, and uncheck facebook for htc sense. This will not remove the facrbook stuff already there you will have to delete it manualy but it will stop new stuff from being added or updated.

I'm not on a sense rom tthough. I'm on cm7. I don't have that feature
-My life is a shooting range, people never change-
I think this is really annoying, too. Especially if you switch between Sense and AOSP roms. Unfortunately, I haven't found a quick way to mass delete all the notes. You have to manually edit each contact and erase it. But as long as you never use another Sense rom, the notes won't fill back up, so that's a plus.
Neat trick I have used before, though: delete the notes with MIUI. It's got a quick clear button to erase all the content in a contact's note box. You still have to manually edit each contact, but it's a little faster than CM7 or anything...
You can also try this app that's supposed to replicate the MIUI contacts and see if that works for the quick clear: http://goo.gl/TtOcU
Hope this made sense.
Just putting it out there that there may be an app that can do this.
I know I used an app to erase a bunch of annoying duplicate contacts I had after I accidently restored them 3 times. Of course this is a much more specific problem, and I haven't checked, but just throwing ya some ideas
just went through them all. thumb hurts. lol

Only by doing it manually
Sent from my ADR6300 using Tapatalk
I had to do it manually too. I sync my Gmail contacts so it was a little easier to manually erase the "HTC Notes" on the web interface.
1. Export all the contacts to the SD card, which produces a .VCF file.
2. Edit this VCF file with a good text editor like TextPad, and use that to delete any lines beginning with 'NOTE:', e.g. use the regular expression '^NOTE:'
3. Delete all the contacts off the phone - the app 'Contact Remover' can do this.
4. Force a sync; this is because you may get a warning about too many deletions. If so, confirm the delete. Check they are all gone.
5. Import from the SD card.

Not one click, but it works way better than what I've had to do before.
1. Open contacts in gmail on web.
2. Export all contacts to GoogleCSV
3. Download the file.
4.Edit the CSV and just clear the whole notes column or edit them individually if you have contacts with notes already.
5. Delete all your gmail contacts.
6. Import newly edited file.

Wouldn't this remove any contact pictures associated with those contacts?
I don't believe the CSV file stores the picture....which means in my case I'd have just as much of a PITA to fix the pictures.
I'm really surprised no one's created a contact cleaner app yet... there was a great one on my old Palm device eons ago that would let you do all sorts of things to standardize your contacts.
Can't JOIN contacts if HTCData exists in notes field
I wrote up my solution to this problem a little bit here thanks to the this forum thread above.

Group SMS

Am I just doing it wrong, or does sending an SMS to a group of people just not work the way you would expect? When I send an SMS to a group of people (using GO SMS or the default app), each person's reply comes in on it's own thread, and there is no way for a person to reply to all. Recipients also cannot tell who all the initial message was sent to.
TMO has a group SMS app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.zipwhip.zipgroups.sidekick, and I know people that use it, and it seems to work, but when I install it on my SGS3, it never works (it errors out when "setting up the phone"). It seems this app is only for the SIdekick??? Why it is specific to a single phone is beyond me. I have also seen other apps that work, but they all require everyone to use the same app (WhatsApp, for instance).
There is a setting for MMS Group Chat in GO SMS, but it doesn't seem to do anything for organizing a thread for multiple recipients. In fact, I'm not sure what it does.
Stock messaging app doesn't do group. It sends them separately to each so when they reply you get separate replies. But go SMS pro fully supports group chats. Been using it for quite a while now. Below are the settings you need to check.

Hmm..Im not sure then. I used Go SMS Pro for my Evo 3d as well and with those settings I never had any issue. Even if the replies are hours later.
And can a recipient hit reply and will the replies go to everyone, or just me?

It'll go to the group chat thread assuming their phone supports it. Its like being in a chat room. Everyone can see everyone's reply in one thread.
But if their phone doesn't support it then it will send separately

Is this with the most updated gmail app (version 4.3)? I haven't noticed this, but I'll send some more e-mail and let you know if anything gets held up.
go into manage apps and clear data for gmail. go back into gmail and let it sync and re-setup your gmail options, but you should be good after that, probably will have to re-do your last email you were trying to send.

Yes, this works for me too. I find it an unsatisfactory answer, though, because you have to redo your settings and re-type the hung email. And you have to repeat the whole process periodically because invariably it will happen again.
Doesn't seem to matter what version of the app you are using (I'm on 4.8 right now). Could it be result of (GASP) poor programming?
Worked for me! thanx

Hi, it finally worked.
I disabled and re-enabled the backup feature, backups got deleted and left the phone charging overnight. This morning loads of apps were backed up! I'm actually surprised how in a couple of months developers are finally targeting SDK 23 and enabling backups.

To know if an app is capable of backup, get the .apk, decompile it and read through the manfiest file
Target SDK must be 23
You may or not find strings about backup.
If nothing is mentioned, backup is enabled by default for these apps
You may see that the dev has blocked the backup. This is the case of Pushbullet, Whatsapp, Adobe Reader and others. It's android:allowBackup="false"
If you see android:allowBackup="true" the dev is just "forcing" the backup
Some apps rely on a different type of backup, like Nova Launcher, which has a "Backup Agent". These apps won't appear in the backup list. Nova Launcher has a backup feature to local and cloud but it's manual, so I don't know if it's really working or not. In theory this method is for older versions of Android.
There is something I don't like about this feature. Apparently the job will backup only apps that were installed 24hrs earlier, and updates are counted as new installation. So if this afternoon you get an app updated, tonight it won't be backed up. I think this is a bit silly. There should also be a way to force backups like on iOS - if I need to wipe my device how am I supposed to get backups updated? (I have root, but it's a general question).
This is the list of apps which backed up. Yesterday I have analyzed most of them, so I was expecting to get a decent list.
