Verizon Equivalent to G2 ? - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Tmobile has great customer service (we've experienced) and great speedy data in my area. The problem is as soon as we leave the city, there is little to no signal at all on tmo. Since the ATT proposal, we're not going to pay for their lack of _________ (everything) and are changing to Verizon.
So, what is the equivelant phone that verizon carries ? I want a physical keyboard, nice fast cpu, nice storage space, and a very very good antenae. Camera and screen should be similar or better also.
So, what says you, users of both carriers ?
THANKS !

uhh, the htc merge is coming out soon; a droid 2?

verizon equivalent of g2 is called the htc merge. It has practically the same inner workings, only differences are cdma and slide out keyboard (versus z-hinge). Only problem is, vz still hasnt officially released the phone yet (release date unknown); Therefore, you can either wait until they release the htc merge or wait until moto announces the droid3.
If you cant wait, you can always go backwards and get the droid2....ew

Actually, anything Motorola-related is automatically a step backwards...unless HTC continues to be a collective retard and not release the bootloaders.
I'd look into the Xperia Play.

As stated before the htc merge is basically the g2 (that's verizon right?). The upcoming droid 3 will most likely have a keyboard as well, but that will be a while.

contrary to popular belief, the HTC Merge is actually a version of the Evo Shift 4G and NOT the G2/Vision/Desire-Z
they removed the (unnecessary for VZW) Wimax from the Evo Shift 4G and made it black in color are the main differences
it is much, much farther from being a G2, the processor is different for example, and no G2 custom ROMS will work on the Merge at all

umm Droid 3? If you don't HAVE to have the keyboard, then you've got lots of options.

EVO 4G and Android 2.2 "Froyo"

Only a few days are left till EVO 4G will be on market. It will have Android 2.1.
I was wondering if it will get an upgrade to 2.2 "Froyo", since Google offisially released it! Or even Android 3.0 "Gingerbread" when will be out, in the end of 2010?

There have been posts about this. Nobody knows for sure. HTC did say that most of the phones released this year will get 2.2 by the end of the year. They might skip it for Gingerbread (2.5, btw) but nobody knows yet. No worries though. I'm sure when we root this thing we will get AOSP 2.2 installed in no time.
I'm just as excited as you are.

Not to be a spoilsport here, but I still prefer HTC HD2 cause it has physical buttons. Those touch sensitive ones have proven to be a bit awkward on the Nexus One already. But this phone's good.
Yeah according to Google/HTC (I'm not sure), but there's an article that says that almost all phones release in 2010 will get the 2.2 update. Not sure about the 3.0 one though, I think it's too early
And I'm just as excited about the Evo as all of you are.
Well semi good news. Froyo is on the Nexus One officially now. So once we root this puppy we can make a N1 rom for our Evo and bam! Instant parfait goodness. That said, I don't think we will root it before Google deposits the 2.2 code in the AOSP repositories so if that happens we can just cook up our own AOSP rom. Even so, this is a good backup plan.

I think that you are being way too confident. The 4G radio in this handset is going to present some interesting (and serious) challenges as far as just adapting AOSP or other ROMs (such as those for the GSM Nexus One) is concerned.

Definitely not a stranger to this notion. Before I got my evo I had a hero which had the same issues. I'm just hoping wecan find a way to better work around it.
Would this help?
Froyo is already said to have wimax support natively. As for cdma support as of 1.6 its supported natively. I don't see any reason we wont have radio support in Froyo. Its all there already. Or will be once its released. I have no worries about a upgrade to froyo. All we need is root and the rest is history

So basically HTC has patched in support for a new type of radio in a previous version of the firmware that doesn't support it natively, and you're using this as evidence that the situation will be different than it was with the Hero?
If you'll recall, 1.5 lacked the native CDMA support that arrived in 1.6. HTC patched it in and then abandoned the handset for seven months.
History is not on your side.

All the more reason to determine how we can update both the Kernel and the OS files independently.
Doesn't Froyo SDK include WiMAX support?

I'm completely new to posting in these forums (1st post), but have followed for quite a while.
In response to the above, I want to point out that keishou posted a link to the EVO 4G Developer's Guide which clearly states that the Froyo SDK will contain WiMAX support. Under section 2. 4G-WiMax Network, it says...
// you are on Sprint's 4G network
// ConnectivityManager.Type_WIMAX=6 will be included in Froyo SDK
// Until Type_WIMAX is supported
// you will need to hard-code the value 6
Doesn't this mean that we won't have to worry about WiMAX when flashing Froyo onto the EVO?

They didn't "abandon" the headset. There was a software release in between launch and 2.1. Not to mention that 2.1 was only out for 5 months before the Hero got the update. 1 bug fixing update and 1 major release in 7 months? Seems about average for the industry.
Look at the Treo 800w and Treo Pro. They never got an update, and probably never will. That's being abanonded.

it doesnt matter if HTC is gonna give us a update really man. we can do a much better job then them. as for HTC abandoning the hero i dont think that was the case. if a handset manufacturer updated the OS on every phone every time Google did they would be ****ing their selves. i think HTC did a ok job of releasing 2.1 for the hero. i mean really we couldve got 1.6, 2.0 or 2.0.1 but all those platforms were short lived. the fact is they have to build binaries to support major platform shifts and it just so happens that 1.5/the hero got caught in that groove. plus on top of it the hero is old news. it has a old ARCH that doesnt support most of the 2.+ APIs. hero doesnt support opengl 2.0 and never will. in a since 2.1 on the hero was kinda pointless. the only way we can get some of the 2.1 goodies is through hacking to get it, leaving the builds unstable and slightly buggy. of course us the tweakers dont care but the users who just buy the phone and wait for official updates do care about that. i mean also official 2.1 hasnt been out all that long either and the hero got it. will the evo see an update? im sure it will. there is no reason it shouldnt.
All of us that will be migrating from the Hero to the Evo have faith in you and the rest of the devs here Toast. You all worked wonders with the Hero and with more capable hardware I am sure you will blow us all away in due time.

Totally agree with ya on that, but dammit they better bring Darch with them
Seeing as the EVO is one of HTC's flagship devices I can't see it not getting at least two upgrades. For what its worth, based on the fact that the droid is getting 2.2 soon it appears that either google has started to talk to manufacturers better or this upgrade may simply be easier to roll out (of course the droid is vanilla 2.2, but considering how long 2.1 took it's still good news)
Based on the Evo's specs I can't imagine not getting updates until at least (Mind you I'm picking a random number with no basis) Android 4.0 or something. While HTC is slow with updates, that's what XDA is for
Yeah the only froyo you will get is a port from a dev on here. I heard the EVO will not get the official 2.2 for up to three months. Knowing sprint, much longer than that.
2.2 is coming to EVO

Are we going to see a special edition?

I think the G2 has quite a meaning for it is the successor of the first Android device G1. Up til now Google has rolled out two (does N1 count?) ADP phones, the ADP1 based on Dream and the HTC Ion based on the Magic. So are we going to see the G2/Desire Z as another ADP device?
Yet Google has got a painful experience over the Nexus One, a setback from the contract-loving mobile operators over Google 's online sale method. The rumoured N2 based on Motorola Shadow never come out, so the successor of Nexus One might as well never will
And I got another question for the lucky ones who have pre-ordered a G2, can you choose the colour of the G2? As the HTC video shows a white Desire Z which should be exclusive to the G2. I like the G2 very much but the standard blueish silver seems a bit too 'business', just wonder if HTC gets conservative this time while we have 5 variartions for the G1/Dream.
let's talk special edition when, you know, the device is actually released

The AWS 1700 Nexus One is sold as the ADP3, if the purchase link on the developer site is anything to go by:
http://android.brightstarcorp.com/index_adp3.htm
Couldn't say as to whether there will be some kind of development edition. Only a Googler, HTC employee, or well-connected leaker could confirm the existence of any such thing.

[Q] When will the G2 have no more support?

Cause with computers, you buy one computer, and as long as it's specs are good enough, you can upgrade the OS from Win 2000->xp->vista->Win7
But for the G2, is this the same? Or do we rely on T-mobile to provide us with ROM material?
I'm just saying, will we be able to upgrade to Android 3.0, 4.0, 5.0 and beyond?
How futureproof is the G2? I want to stick with this phone until it dies a "natural death", and not ditch it prematurely because support for it stopped.
To answer your questions, yes, we will be able to upgrade to Android 2.3 and 3.0. The best thing about this device is the dev support. Even if T-Mobile didn't push an official update, the devs will always produce custom roms. If you go off of the life of the G1, the G2 will be around for a decent amount of time.

If your on contract your normally upgrade to the next big thing every two years, but the G1 still has dev support and it is a few months over 2 years albiet that might die off soon with gingerbread...

I had a g1. The g2 blows it out of the water. It took me a while to actually play with the g2. Once I did I started realizing that the old was slow, out dated, and is hindering the new android experence.
Sent from my HTC Vision
G2 will have dev's working on it for a long long time yet, however there is a chance that any android higher than 3.0 will require better/different hardware, we just won't know until closer to its release, which is a long way off anyway.
I wouldn't concern myself about it. The developer support will always be there - and personally I'd much rather rely on good developer support than support from your service provider...
As far as hardware... No way in telling. With dual-core processors around the corner its hard to say what future Android OS's will require but being that 'TRUE' Android is simple and efficient, I would think that the G2 will be able to keep up. (Remember people are clocking this baby upwards of 1.8GHZ)
I take it you did not have the G1?
If you had the G1 (htc dream) you would not have written such a post!
Have no fear... HAVE NO FEAR!!!!!
I can name countless reasons why....
#1 - Cyanogen uses the G2 more than the Nexus. He loves this phone. As long as he is around we will see much love for the htc Vision.
#2 - hell, #1 is enough.
Even without #1 or #2 you can trust you can keep your phone until it dies a natural death. The G1 is still chugging along just fine. Without Tmobile support.
Tmobile could kill the G2 off next month and it wouldnt make a damn difference! If Tmo told you to jump off a bridge.. please ask XDA before you do that!

Is The Evo 4G Gonna Get Left In The Dark?

I don't know about you guys but I'm starting to think we are gonna get treated like the HD2 was......I mean HTC and Windows gave there dedicated users a great device with the ancient Windows 6.5.....and while we may be running Android 2.2 (which is beginning to become old news) we are running an ancient UI (HTC Sense 1.0) while the new phones are getting Sense 2.0+.....sounds familiar to me with the new Windows 7 devices coming out and the HD2 stuck on 6.5......I really think froyo will be the last major update for the Evo....at least until Q3 or Q4 of this year......What do u guys think???? Id be happier with either Gingerbread or the New Sense or a combination of both......
Its still Sprint's flagship smartphone. The epic doesn't get any love, and I really don't see the shift overtaking it. Does it even have a named replacement yet?
We'll at least get new sense, if not gb soon. Didn't we just see a sense gb rom dump...I lost the thread, but HTC is at least working on something

You're correct, it is a GSM device.
optimus came out as a gsm phone to, and not after long it was on all 4 carriers
Well I really hope it doesn't come to Sprint. Knowing them, they'll get it and think that they don't need another flagship phone and we'll never get our EVO 2. Besides, we sure as hell don't need another gimmick phone since the Echo will be the reigning king in that department.
evo2 would be nice, but in all fairnest optimus 3d is pretty good phone. hdmi, dlni, 3d, dual core prosessor, 4.3 inch screen etd. has pretty impressive packege, and would be good addition to sprints line up. about echo I really dont know what they was thinkin. phone looks like its ben desined on a launch break. lame
Well Sprint can ask for HTC to upgrade us to a 2.0 Sense but I doubt that will happen as HTC is more focused on their new lines coming out which is fail on their part.
Sprint needs to learn how to push harder for updates out of HTC and remove the bullcrap from their shipped ROMs like their bloatware.
LG & Sprint have not really faired well together imo. Lutus & Lotus elite = garbage, Optimus besides having Android 2.2 is really no better than the sanyo Zio. The best phone they've had for Sprint was the Rumor 2.
I work at a Sprint store & I see the LGs come back all the time broken & not working right. Keep the 3D on GSM & give me an EVO2 as well.

Basically we have to wait and see if htc will allow 2.3 to be on the EVO in not at all by passing "quality standards".

[VZW]getting tired of my gnex...what next?

As we all know the Gnex has been the greatest Verizon phone of the last few years. Not the least cause of the great developers who maintain it. I have not seen such great support since the droid incredible days...race condition anyone? However I have been sitting on my upgrade since July and I just need something new. 1 hour of screen on time just doesn't cut it anymore.
Let's just assume I am stuck with Verizon. What is everyone else doing? I am torn between the g2's battery life and the note 3s community life. I have been reading about the notes poor signal(hello Verizon gnex) and the G2 poor support and I am completely undecided. What is everyone else's game plan?
I plan on putting 4.4 on it anyways with or without cellular data.

nexus 5 will prolly not be a verizon phone, so he cant rely on that.
If you want the most future proof device right now, the G2 and the Note 3 are where it's at. I think the Note is too large for every day use (I like to be able to use my phone one-handed). While not a spec powerhouse on paper, the Moto X looks like an awesome device. The same size screen as the Gnex, but with a smaller body. That's just awesome. If I was in the market for a phone right now, I'd seriously look at this device.

I would be surprised if the next nexus is released on either sprint or verizon. Not saying it can't happen, but with Verizon's track record lately of locking down bootloaders, a Nexus doesn't fit in with their plans.
While the Nexus 5 probably won't hit Verizon, there still could be a chance. The latest N7 has Verizon support. I think the N5 was reported to possibly support it too. Not sure.
However the N5 is based off the LG G2, which has had a pretty widespread release on all carriers. I don't plan on upgrading until Decemberish but hopefully by then, the N5 is out and we can see how easy rom development goes back and forth between the 2 devices.
I'd love another Nexus device on Verizon but I'm not giving my hopes up.

The Nexus 7 supports Verizon LTE. If it had a CDMA radio, things would be looking more likely. I don't think we'll be seeing a Verizon Nexus anytime soon.
All rumors point to Verizon being the only major US carrier not getting the N5, believe me, if in was rumored to find its way this thread wouldn't even be here. The Verizon note 3 doesn't come out till 10/10 anyways so I have at least then to see if any Google announcements are made.
I am really curious where most other Verizon gnexers will end up now that this phones 2 year birthday is coming up. And to hear thoughts as I am totally undecided.

I can tell you this verizon user went to prepaid (StraightTalk), and I love it. Wife and I save $60/mo, and still get LTE. Now I don't need to worry about "will my carrier get *x* phone?" While this option doesn't work for everyone, it's at least something to consider.
Why are so many people starting these threads before the Nexus 5 comes out? I'm still hanging onto this article here:

Notice the "update" section in the article. If its true, Verizon could still possibly carry it.

I would love to go to StraightTalk. In fact my wife (iPhone 4S) and father (Nexus 4) and a few others have all switched and have no complaints. The reason I am tied to Verizon is this is a work phone purchased and paid for by my company. They use Verizon thus I use Verizon. For a while I carried 2 phones but I use Google Voice and wanted to save some cash.
I'm not upgrading my GN until December probably. This will give me time to follow the N5 release and the G2 development. I broke out of the Nexus line for the LG G2x and I hated every minute of it. The LG G2 looks like a super sweet phone but so did the G2x at the time. LG SUCKS at updating their equipment so without a solid dev community, I would be very hard pressed to pick up another one. I would rather go with a Galaxy S4 or Note 2/3 or just stick it out on my GN.
The Nexus 4 was based off the LG Optimus G (?) but after a year, I recently visited the Optimus forums and found their dev was very lacking. Many of the people said the dev from the N4<>LG Optimus wasn't too complicated, but it never had a following.
I don't want to fall into a phone that is outdated out of the box. I don't need official support from LG, but need a good official AOKP support to be happy for a while.
Unfortunately the linked article above shows FCC filings for a new LG-VS980 they claim to be a rumored VZW N5, but if you google LG-VS980, you'll find that it's the Verizon G2 model number:

So rumor busted.
I am also glad they fixed the ear piece from the LG G2x and the Optimus where there was a thin metal line at the top that would cut into your ear when in use. The new G2 reminds me of a Samsung, which is good. I would probably grab a white one. Never had a white phone before.
Update:
Good to know that ONLY the VZW version of the LG G2 has Qi Charging. I've invested in some Qi Chargers for my new N7 and love it. My next phone will absolutely have this feature. So it is good to know that even if I end up with a G2, I will be covered.
I also heard that the Verizon G2 also has unlocked GSM/LTE bands that work with AT&T and StraightTalk. This would be super cool because I travel. The military outposts we do typically will have 1 cell carrier and it is usually not Verizon. Good to know I can pickup a cheap prepaid sim to use temporarily.

What exactly would I be searching for? Reasons why other people are getting tired of their gnex? You think I don't troll their other forums seeing how people are getting along with the new phones?
Besides things change daily with these things, and it is not like there is an abundance of these threads either, not here.

This is the kind of dialog and thoughts is like to hear. I have the same fears about the G2. I always told myself id at least be happy if it got cyanogen or something but I still have serious doubts about it.
And what gets me about the note 3 is the rumored poor radio(being gnex owners we all know how annoying that is) and the fact that it is region locked with the sim. Maybe that will be changed with root/unlock but who knows.

A search in the hand is worth two in the bush.
