Hey guys so basically today I've finally decided to root my DZ. I've been looking up on how to root but there's different ways.
Could somebody give me the easiest and most secure way to root and S-off and install Clockwork so I can try ROM's out. Thanks.

Unfortunately easiest and most reliable are two different things.
I always recommend using the gfree method posted on the wiki, the only tricky thing about it is getting ADB working, once that's done it is a straightforward process to get root, S-OFF and SIM-unlock.
use this tutorial on it
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?title=HTC_Desire_Z:_Rooting
i used it i found it extremely straight forward
feel free if to pm me if you have any question regarding the rooting process
Have fun!

It may come with the latest ROM but I more suspect that it will come with the original (shipped) ROM and immediately receive the OTA update. The good news is that there are no issues rooting even if you have the OTA applied (I think some of the rooting guides assume you do) so I would go ahead and apply the OTA if prompted. This is different than the Desire Z where the latest updates can make rooting more complicated.
The most widely recommended method of obtaining permanent root is the "gfree" method, it will permanently root your phone and at the same time will SIM unlock it as well as set the CID so you could load whatever carrier ROM you might want to.
The only issue most people seem to have with using the gfree method is getting ADB up and running and talking to your G2. Using ADB isn't (as far as I know) strictly necessary to make gfree work but it's easiest and all the guides (that I've seen) have you use ADB.
Here is the section of the wiki showing you how to use gfree to root your phone: http://forum.xda-developers.com/wik...cess_.28Permanent_Root_.2F_.22Permaroot.22.29
For instructions for getting ADB up and running I would look here:

Check out unlockr.com on rooting g2. They use the Visionary method. Took me only couple mins.

Could you please stop telling people to use the VISIONary method!? That method has a risk of putting the user's phone into a boot loop! Please know you what your talking about before attempting to help some one, it can make the difference of bricking a phone and rooting a phone. Rage and GFree DOES NOT have a risk of putting your phone in a boot loop. Out of all the people that have messed up their phone, EVERY ONE of them that I have seen has used the VISIONary method. I'm not trying to be mean, but please be more careful when giving advice. I know your just trying to help, and I respect you for that but please do no tell some one to do the VISIONary method.
Sorry mate, I had no clue bout that. I had no loop but i see your point

nevermind about my quesiton lol
Thanks for this question, it answered mine so I didn't have to ask. Will be using g-free way shortly.
I've been reading this forum for a month or 2. I find it very helpful, thanks.
I'm looking into perm rooting my device, and all the tutorials are from November when the G2 came out. Is there a simpler way that is safer? I'm sure, after 4 months there are better methods. I just can't find them.
Thanks
There are only three ways: Visionary, Rage and Gfree.
The safest way is follow the XDA wiki, use Rage to temp root and Gfree to permroot.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=HTC_Vision
Visionary doesn't use ADB but it also has a track record of perm boot looped phones, I rooted this way but would suggest the Wiki and Gfree to root.

This is what most are using for a perm root: Worked great for me.

joemm and I are both pointing you to the same place, and I can tell you that joemm is correct. I have seen more than one poster on these forums that have attempted to use Visionary to obtain permanent root and have run into a permanent boot loop instead.
Thanks, I'm checking out the wiki
I can't seem to get this, and I would really like to get S-Off sorted today, so I can flash a custom ROM. I used Visionary+ to obtain perm root on my Z, and now I'm trying to get there...
However, my original Desire is still S-On, and I've been flashing ROMs on it for months... is S-Off really necessary?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
There is another user who was in the same situation as you, see this thread for more info.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=12879000
Your original has a hacked bootloader which is not the best way to go. The gfree method is the real way to get and use s-off. The real way is much safer and let's you recover from mistakes a lot easier.

So I've recently gotten my Desire Z rooted, and I'm trying to install a custom ROM.
However Clockwork keeps telling me that my phone is not rooted, ("You must root your phone for ROM Manager to function. Superuser was not found at "/system/bin/su" or "/system/xbin/su"".
Even so my phone has SU installed as well as busybox. How do I need to go about fixing this?
Thank you for any help!
first of all what method did you follow to gain root?
also do any other rooted apps work? setcpu, titanium, adfree ?
I used the HTCdev method to unlock my bootloader then I used the Fre3vo exploit and pushed the superuser and busybox apks and installed them both.
Titanium does not work either.
I believe in order to get the su to work you have to actually flash it as a .zip the first time. Also, do you have s.off? That htcdev.com method is horse crap if you ask me, though it will get you unlocked.

It managed to get my bootloader unlocked.
But no I don't have S-off. Would having flashed it from a .zip changed anything else?
Also I can flash ClockWorkRecovery without even a little bit of an Issue.
well s-off means no root, follow the wiki, downgrade and then root.
the htc unlocked bootloader is just a stepping stone leading to nowhere
probably the most you will get out of it is confirming your g2 is void of warranty with htc
so follow the wiki, it isnt to hard and you will be much happier than trying to cheat your way into root!
good luck!
Alright, well thanks for your help fellas!
no problem, just make sure you read the wiki first and understand it, if not search the threads and im sure someone has had the same question. but over all it takes from 30min for the experienced up to 2hrs if your lost the whole time. leave the appropriate amount of time and youll be a happy camper soon enough!

This is the thread you need to follow if you have already used htcdev method. You will have to relock bootloader, then downgrade, then root and s.off.
Also, if you have any further problems talk to that nipqer, he is really good.

This was the guide I followed and it just seems to be against me!
EDIT: Never mind! Finally got it to work! I now have custom ROMs again! Thanks for all the help!
If you join that irc channel, all those guys are on there and will walk you through it step by step.

follow this guide, since you have "the official HTC unlocked bootloader" which as i said before is almost worthless (not complaining to you but to htc) i believe you need to do a few things first before you can downgrade, you need to be at froyo for this method to work, dont have time to search for you right now but im sure you'll find the appropriate steps to take if you search a little
HTC Unlock only lets you flash ROMs through fastboot. As already mentioned, it doesn't give you root, S-Off, and you can't flash straight from ROM Manager or recovery.
I have seen the suggested threads for methods in rooting a G2.
Read some of them but I've noticed many of them are dated and I wanted to know if there is anything more recent that I can use to gain root access to my G2 (2.3.4)?
I later want to install a new ROM as well but for now I would like to know how to get root.
The method as described in the wiki Is the most reliable way of rooting, despite not being updated for a while or so. The above link describes rooting but it only works for Froyo, and as such you have to downgrade. You can follow this guide. Credits go to Setherio. Alternatively, you can use Strawmetal's guide, which is more inclusive but is essentially based off the above ones. It is more straightforward to follow and has everything pre-packaged. You can find it here. All credits go to Strawmetal.
Looks like those linked files for strawmetal's rooting guide no longer exist. Anyone have a mirror?

Thanks for the reply and a great starting point.
I'll read over the links and try it out.
As far as I know, strawmetal is updating the pdf slightly, and should be posting it soon.
I am mirroring his packaged tools though, http://ratherphallic.co.cc/ROOT/platform-tools.7z

Thanks for the mirror nipqer.
You can find the tools and guide to downgrade and root at this folder on minus
Im new to the G2 also. I came from Sprint and had the Epic 4g. Guess I was a bit spoiled with having the simple one click root methods or using Odin
Does this method below still work for temp root? Im on 2.3.4 currently. Or do all rooting methods involve downgrading now?

Thanks!
Don't use visionary unless your ok with bricking your phone. Just rooted my third g2 last night. First two went well no problems. Last night I had a ton of problems! But the good folks here on xda and freenode are always there to help, nipqer was my savior last night. (Last time I root a phone drunk) so follow the g2 xda wiki and you'll be fine

The visionary method I was reading up on I thought only bricks your phone if you try to perma-root the phone? As a temp root do you know if that way still works?
Otherwise the only way to root would be to downgrade first then use adb?
Temp root should be safe, but that won't get you too far. Its well worth rooting by downgrading and then exploiting to gain root via the method outlined in the wiki

Thanks I will give the temp root a try first I was a bit intimidated by the other permanent method used for roms. I will eventually give that a try though.
One other question- on the Epic 4g I had a tool from Samsung, that pretty much no matter how bad I screwed the phone up with a bad flash or anything like that, it would always let me revert it back to stock. Is there anything like this for the G2?
Sort of, so long as you can boot backinto either hboot or recovery your fine, if you loose those then only jtag will fix your phone

Temp rooting with visionary doesnt seem to work on 2.3.4
I will try the downgrade/adb route later tonight...
Visionary only works with Froyo. But please, do yourself a favor and stay away from it.
