[Q] CWM 3.0.0.6 and sd-ext - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

While in CWM and performing a backup, I always get "sd-ext not found"
Looking in the file system I don't see a folder for this, I do however see a folder called "external_sd"
Is this supposed to be the same folder, or am I missing the "sd-ext" folder?

It isn't an error, it means that you did not partition your sdcard to ext2, ext3, or ext4 (for app2sd)

I let CWM 3 do its thing and convert to ext4, made noob mistake and rebooted before flashing, used odin to get EB13 do-oxed, let CWM do its thing again, flashed midnight ROM, then rebooted.
Knowing what I did, is there something else I should do, or just ignore the sd-ext error?

Its not an error, its just that you don't have an ext partition on your sd card...
The ext partition is used to store apps on the sd card (NOT in the same way froyo moves apps to sd)...so the point is that a cwm backup will also back up those apps so when you restore it you'll have your apps back. It just a message letting you know it didn't find an ext partition. For all intents and purposes, ignore it.

So let me see if I understand this correctly:
If I'm on a rooted Epic with CWM3, and its converted to ext4, I don't NEED to have an sd-ext partition?

Is sd-ext partition needed?

I apologize if I am asking a question that may have been asked before, but I haven't seen it and was wondering.
When I originally started playing with rooting my Epic, if you wanted to use apps2sd, you needed to create a sd-ext partition on the sdcard. And you could also create a partition for the cache.
Now it appears that with the more recent ROMs that id you use app2sd the files are actually stored on the main sd partition in a hidden directory like .android_secure and can be seen via /mnt/asc
Is this in fact the case?
If it is, do we need/use the sd-ext partition any longer?
And this may seem dumb, but what's the easiest way to get a full reformat of the card as it seems that the partition functions in CW 3.0 no longer work?

You don't need the partition in 2.2+, to remove it, use sdformat (Google it).

I'm using LauncherPro and running Bonsai 4.0.1 (2.2 ROM) and LP automatically tells me when an app I've installed can be moved to SD. I've never understood the sd-ext thing, so I've been curious as to if I'm just missing something as well. For some reason that whole thing has escaped me.
The sd partition was for eclair and earlier versions of android. There wasn't an apps2sd function so u made a partition on the sd card for it and you could manually move them.

You can use cwm to partition you sd card. I have mine partitioned for swap

S-OFF for SD ext?

Hi, I have a rooted myTouch 3G Slide running a custom mod (similar to stock with some tweaks) with S-ON
I wanted to be able to install my apps on the SD card and increase my internal memory with a 2nd partition on my SD card
I know everything on how to make the partition and the swap partition, how to format the partitions, how big to make them etc. I just want to ask:
DO I NEED TO HAVE S-OFF TO BE ABLE TO DO IT?
i recently tired very hard to do it using the Rom Manager and Link2SD as well as some other techniques such as making the partitions myself and using A2SD script with the A2SDGUI application. With just using Link2SD, i got an error that saied it cannot allocate the memory when I tried to create the boot script and when I used the A2SD script, it said that my apps were being sent to the sd card but when i rebooted, all of the apps i linked to the SD were gone and i was not able to get them back.
I've tried looking around the forums and on google but i have not been able to find a definitive answer to my question. Does my device need S-OFF or will I be able to do this with S-ON?
Thank you in advance.
bumpity?
I believe you do
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=893706
actually, you don't need S-OFF to move your apps to the ext partition on your sd card. I haven't used any of the apps on market/play store myself, i've always just run the DTApp2SD script. Let me know if you need the zip for that.
@morphuex: the link you provided is for custom MTD, it will allow you to resize your phone's inner storage to fit your need, which does require S-OFF.
Oh, thought that what he was asking, must of read it wrong. :silly:
I've tried to apply dtapps2sd-2.7.5.3-beta04 to my device running CM9 beta 3 (Jun 21 2012) version and got unbootable device. It started and got stuck at the white T-mobile screen before CM9 animation.
Maybe this was caused by having s2e installed on the device which was used to move data to sd-ext partition. So just be careful and make a prior backup just in case.
By the way, does anybody know why I get an error message like 'unable to mount /sd-ext partition. unsupported by your device' while i'm trying to make a nandriod backup using CWM recovery?

yes, it means you don't have an sd-ext. if you do it will mount it. it will say the same error on anything that does a backup.
you do not need s-off to move apps to a created sd-ext. when my mt3gs was my daily phone i used simple2ext to manage my sd-ext. worked fine. i was using cm7.2.

This is not quite right. I had /sd-ext partition already created when I tried to make a backup. I did move there data & some apps using s2e app.
The same situation I experience right now. The ext partition does exist, but CWM doesn't mount it in backup process - "can't mount /dev/block/mmcblksomething (file already exists)" error.
Initially I partitioned my sd card using CWM. I created just ext partition only, no swap.
I use an unofficial CM9 beta4 build, rom manager version 5.0.0.8, recovery version 2.5.0.7. Should I try to flash more recent experimental version 2.5.1.4?

yeah, i duplicated that error just now. i fired up my old mt3gs and flashed the cm9 beta4. it does give that error and won't mount my sd-ext.
i honestly haven't read enough about the cm9 for this phone to give an informed answer, sorry. i know that if i flash my backup cm7.2 everything is fine. the only difference on my phone was the rom change. I did all this on rom manager 5.0.0.8, cwm recovery 2.5.0.7.
Thank you everyone for your contributions. i will try the DT app2sd script right now and will keep you guys informed on whether or nor i was able to do it. thank you!
I got a problem. i am unable to partition my SD because the version of CWM for my phone cannot do it..(it doesnt have the option to do it)
i tried doing it from rom manager but i get an error when i try to do it, saying the signature couldnt be verified.

back up problem

While i making back up i got this error: "Error while making backup image of /sd-ext"
how can i solve this problem? or i can restore, but my apps on ext wont work?
(i use cm 9 aplha3 , and link2sd)
are you using cwm6? i have same problem here and looking for a way to turn back to cwm5...(and you can manually back up your sd-ext..it is located in internal storage data/sdext copy it to sd card and after restoring copy again to same place))
If you're using Link2SD/Data2SD then you must be having a separate EXT2/3/4 partition on your SD card. You can simply backup the files in that partition & put them back after reflashing.
If you have a linux system, then connect USB will show up both partitions, then you can copy them to a folder on your PC as a backup.
Its actually a good thing when you don't want a full restore too. Some things like Swype's personal dictionary can't be backed up, so after a fresh install, just copy these files on the EXT partition!

It's easy using CWM app. Run CWM, take the first option in the menu, confirm it's your device and it will reflash recovery 5.0.2.8. Before reflashing it already tells you that you've 5.0.2.8, but that's a mistake, if you reflash it downgrades your recovery and, at least in my device, the problem in sd-ext backup disappears.

Yea restoring will work but some of the apps will not appear or will not work properly, those are stored in sdext..run link2sd and mount partition after you can copy your backed up sd ext folder... i also turned back to cwm 5 but it still has error with sdext i dont know why..

I think you mean Rom Manager. It's a cwm app, but when you say cwm you're usually referring to the recovery app.
Edit : Try using titanium backup, I find it works better. I use cwm just to flash stuff.

S2E here, too - how did you partition the card - CWM? (I'd guess usually that shouldn't lead into problems...)
Did you also mount the partition manually in CWM? (I'm pretty sure that I didn't - but that's still an open question / if I have to / should) - what CWM version?

Hbu?Have you achieved the Nandroid backup(including ext) without any problem ?What CWM did you use ?
I just don't understand why CWM can't back it up when it was created by itslef.
Does CWM 5.0.2.0 supports ext3/4 ?
I am pretty sure I created ext3 partiton using it and now when I mount my SD card via ADB,it shows the file system as ext2

Yep
Then surely it looks some issue with your SD-ext,I would recommend you to repartition using minitool partition wizard,For now you could use app extractor app to restore your apps/data from nandroid.
you can try cwm 5.0.2.8 (the latest available) this is the link of the tread

I know that the recovery have some problems creating / formatting partitions ext (eg creates ext4 but reformat in ext3 when you wipe), then I suggest GParted utility on the ubuntu live cd to partition the microsd.

BTW,I have already backed up my applications using TB and the app data should be in internal memory as it was not moved to ext.
I just want to have the recovery fixed to backup.
You can't just copy the whole SD card on the PC as it can't read the sdext# directory.
Most of the people recommend CWM for the partiton of the card and they didn't have any problem with that.Which recovery did you use ?
Doh! I am clueless
tb save the app to a folder on fat32 (microsd) You must backup this partition before reformatting the entire micro sd or use gparted to erase/formatting only the ext partition

I prefer FASTBOOT
I had been using cwm 5.0.2.8 for a long time with no issues while backing up and restoring nandroid including sd-ext.
But due to mirroring bug in temporary 2.5.0.7 with 5.0.2.8,i downgraded to v5.0.2.0.
From then I started to have problems in restoring nandroids made previously with v5.0.2.8.I did everything again(partitioning, backup and restore) with 5.0.2.0,and it all started to work as before again.
So,I jumped to a conclusion that if you create sd-ext with specific cwm version then you should use the same version to backup or restore nandroids.
I know this sounds silly but proved to be good in my case.I might be wrong though.

I'm using 4.0.1.4 - by accident because of that wrong PC49IMG file in the index thread and I'm really too lazy to update.
Re. your problems: There are a few reports that CWM (all versions) sometimes fails with wiping/formatting (or does it a bit dirty) so I'd guess this very likely could also happen with partitioning (if I'm correct the partitions will be wiped and formatted also, then). I really would just repartition again - and afterwards I'd do a complete wipe/format of the sd-ext - just to make sure...
Keep in mind that a sdcard is not a hard drive...
Hello, first calm down, you have just installed a recovery
second probably the trouble (as you have already said) is the card, the formatting you? if you do not want to lose the data on your ext partition with gparted can copy them like a fat partition
even if given the situation I suggest you start from scratch. deep Formatting
partition with ubuntu live cd and flash the rom (I understand that will not boot up right? The ext partition is recognized as the first boot). There is a possibility that the micro sd does not work well anyway good luck I hope I can help you

converting ext3 to ext4

I realise that I should have created my ext partition as ext4 not ext3 as the newer roms seem to need it. I had a search and it seems to be a bit complicated to simply convert the partition so I have a two-part question to see if what I have in mind will work.
I use Link2sd which I like and seems to work well (other than for Swype which I now have gotten rid of).
So, will this work (and I apologise for being somlistic in my approach):
I move all my linked apps to the SDcard proper using L2SD (there's not enough room on the phone's internal memory)
I copy my entire SD card to my computer just in case
I then use 4EXT and using the option "wipe or format --> EXT3" I reformat that ext3 partition as a ext4 partition
Using L2SD I relink all the apps to the new ext4.
Otherwise, if I were to reformat and repartition the entire SD card using Gparted, can I simply drag and drop the SDcard folder I backed up on my computer back onto the SD card then relink everything with L2SD?

Great - nice and easy. Should I move the apps to the main part of sd card first by unlinking them because I don't see the ext3 partition when I connect the phone to my computer.
The concept of doing a nandbackup is to copy thhe current status of the phone. Everything. So you relly don't need to do that.
Just make sure that the contents you see when you plug the phone to the computer is saved in the computer including the nandbackup you made.
The nand will basically take care of the files on the ext part when you restore it.

If using 4ext you only need to convert ext to ext4(it backs up automatically). If you restore a nand made with ext3 you also loose the ext4 partition so you also need to manually convert all nand backups to ext4 using 4ext. Hope this makes sense...

It makes sense but I'm starting to get a bit confused as to what I now need to do.
What you're saying is the nand backup will put the phone back how it was to start with, ie the ext4 partition will revert to ext3? So what is the best way to do all of this? When you say "you also need to manually convert all nand backups to ext4 using 4ext. " how do I do that and do you mean before or after I restore the nand backup?
To make this easier, can I not simply forget the nand backup and do this: unlink all my apps with L2sd and put them onto the sd card like in native apps2sd. Then put the whole sd card on a folder on my computer, wipe and repartiton the sd card with ext4, move the whole folder back onto the fat32 partition and the use L2sd to relink all the apps onto the new ext4 partition?

Put simply:
boot into 4ext recovery.
go into tools/Convert or change a backup --> ext4
convert ext
It will automatically backup ext, convert it to ext4 and then restore ext again (no data loss).
Delete all old NAND backups and start again (otherwise you'll restore your ext3 partition) or you can convert backups with 4ext (from ext3 to ext4).

I was thinking of installing this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1315961 I hear it is quite a stable one and that's most important to me. It says that ext4 is required for the ROM:
(Q) I get an error ”can’t Mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p2 (File Exists)”.
(A) That error and others like it are generally caused by a corrupt ext partition on your SD Card. The solution is to use 4EXT recovery, gParted, or a similar tool to reformat the ext partition to ext4. Leave the FAT32 partition alone and you shouldn’t lose any data. Don't use Windows-based partition tools!
Some suggest using ext3 as it is a known quantity and most ROMS will boot with an ext3 partition, however Runnymede AIO requires an ext4 partition.
and for AD2SDX to work (links you to here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=18911182&postcount=1784 )
I'll have to look for another instead.
