[Q] dInc end of life - Droid Incredible Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

http://www.htcphones.net/htc-droid-incredible-reaches-end-of-life/
I guess this means that we won't be getting Gingerbread officially at all on the Incredible ?
I'm starting to feel a little let down by all this. I bought the Incredible less than a year ago now, and it would appear that the only way to upgrade the software would be by by rooting and ROM'ing.
I'm totally cool with that, but it's the way Verizon lock you in for 2 years, then tell you that the last year of your contract is basically unsupported ?
Is there any way any dev's could port the Dezire Z GB ROM over ?

Time for a little Cyanogmod 7 lovin'.

We're getting Gingerbread, I got this from a HTC employee:
"Dear (My name),
I understand your concern about wanting to know if the Incredible will be updated to Android 2.3 (Gingerbread). I’m pleased to inform you that there is going to be an update in the second quarter of this year to Android 2.3 (Gingerbread). At this time we do not have any more information about the update. When the update is released we will announce it on www.htc.com and www.facebook.com/htc
.
If you feel you need more information, you are welcome to send us another email or you can contact the HTC Technical Support team at 1-866-449-8358 daily from 6:00AM until 1:00AM Eastern.

HTCSense.com on Desire

Guys apparently the new sense is available soon (December) for the Desire
New sense UI & HTCSense.com available for Desire
HTCSense.com is currently online and running, but due to the service only compatible for Desire HD & Z, no one is able to use this feature. But HTC announced today, future HTC Android devices, no matter the specs, will be compatible with HTCSense.com, so we don’t need to worry that entry level devices will be left in the dark. HTC also announced that HTCSense.com will not be extended to Windows Phone 7 as they already have Microsoft’s MyPhone Service.
Another good news is specifically for Desire Users. HTC said that the new Sense UI will be available to all Devices in the Desire family, therefore Desire users can receive this feature through an update. (This update includes the new Sense UI and HTCSense.com), the expected release date is in December.

real nice!!!
indeed, I can't wait myself
btw, just read through the google translation...lol, even I can't understand what it's saying...have to refer back to the original article XD
If you run the entire article through google translate it says:
"Another good news is to hand Desire the user to hear. HTC said the new Sense Desire interface will extend to the entire family, so Desire can also upgrade the way through, enjoy the convenience brought new Sense interface, while supporting HTCSense.com. As for the upgrade schedule, HTC said that probably about 12 months or so."
So in a year, and not around december

no my friend, the google translator failed there. I read mandarin and i know what it says
we say the 12th month instead of december
guess what, i will do a proper translation tomorrow, for now I need to lie down and rest...
to be honest December seems like a reasonable date, i believe it's coming, white desire will be launched end of month, Desire Z and HD simply complete the family and it's T3's phone of the year
Really? I thought the White Desire was launched long time ago...
anyway, proper translation up
Very cool. Looking forward to it. Thanks for the info
good news! thanx for sharing, i still think that the desire should have been compatible since the beginning of htcsense.com, dont think it needs more than "htc hub" app and some ROM tweaks.
anyways, cant blame HTC for marketing the Desire Z and HD as a priority as long as they will not leave the original Desire behind
Oh neat! This should be really cool Hope they release to all the regions once and not do it batches!
I am already loving htcsense.com with HD Roms.

[Poll][Community effort]Best way to tell HTC that Desire is lacking updates?!

Hey all!
- So.. we want sense 2.0 right?
- We want Gingerbread right?
- MS Exchange support in Mail client (add account fails..)?
- Maybe a fix for the SMS not sending the sms to the recipient (rare.. but known, see the thread for Desire's bugs)
... I propose we create a common message to HTC asking for updates.
My main reason for this is the same lame answer everyone gets after emailing them for a certain update/fix.
We always get the "we don't know when" or "HTC makes sure you have the latest blah blah blah.."
Let's make a stand and say to HTC we don't want them to be like other companies that don't update "older" models!
Desire's hardware can - surely - withstand Gingerbread + Sense, Sense 2.0 and more..
The specs aren't near old enough not to have the latests features Android has to offer!
So.. with that in mind maybe you could unite our efforts and take a common action..
I'm suggesting the ones in the poll.. have another idea?
Update:
!PANDA as suggested sending the link to this thread to HTC.. so plz leave a reply
Once loads of people have voted, we all e-mail htc with the link to this poll, so they'll actually see this as most of the time they just send us templates.
The same has been done with the 1.24.161.3 vodafone update (just update, no poll used)
That is all. Good Bye.

Of course it doesn't hurt to ask them for further support I think it is still to soon to say they won't support us. I think we will get an upgrade to gingerbread, maybe even with sense 2.0 (which I think is the biggest obstacle because the rom is so large otherwise it should run fine( and it does on my phone))
It took them 3 months to port froyo...

We already have the first 2 on your list - look through the first 2 pages of the 'Desire Android Development' thread....
My experience is that HTC do whatever HTC want to do. They would much rather have you spend some more $$ on a new device than pour effort into updating/supporting your old one. Now I'm not saying that's how it should be, just saying that's how it is.
That's why this place is so valuable - people spend the time and effort to provide stuff HTC (and others) never intended you to have.
Gotta love XDA Devs
Good luck with your idea tho.

Er..
It is too soon to have gingerbread.. of course it is!
But what about the messaging thing? Has it ever happened to you? It's kinda bothering to send something you wrote to your girlfriend and have it delivered to your boss.. Who knows he might like it or he might sue you for sexual harassment..
JK, but seriously, there's little things that should be fixed.
For example showing the sms you sent as a reply before the sms that originated the reply..
The ms exchange mail thing..
I believe they will take a while to give us 2.3 and we have to understand that Sense is a very good GUI (the best I've experienced so far..) because it is well programmed and tested. So HTC is just "protecting" their image by taking three months to port the new version of Android.
But look for example the case of Sony Ericson saying 2.1 is too good already and future updates shouldn't be expected.. Sure their costumers replied back.. and now they're getting 2.2 on some models.. (We'll see..)
My point here is that by requesting fixes and updates we are showing that we are satisfied costumers and want it to continue that way. So in a month or two, if there's no 2.3 for Desire maybe we can have this thread to show dis contempt..
(And by the way.. Sense 2.0 isn't that big of an obstacle.. it's already working entirely in Desire's NAND.. just have a look at some DHD ROMs ports to Desire in the Development section.. Saying that Sense 2.0 won't fit in Desire's NAND is saying that XDA has better chefs than HTC... lol )

This poll equates to the following:
"Hi BMW,
I bought a 3 series last year with a 2-litre engine and I now see you have a 2.5-litre engine. When can I book in my new engine?"
Bit extreme, I know, but HTC don't have to update the Desire to anything. They're a business and they release new phones with new software. We might get it, we might not
That can be true in car business. But smart phone making is different. And when you buy car you are not only buying finished product but in most cases also 1, 2, 3, 5 year guarantee that include replace car, tow service, help on road if yours car stops obedience. Bmw also has free maintenance for first 100.000km or 5 years. Every business has its rules. And we as buyers of smartphones we set them. So, i ll buy my next phone from company that will offer me at least 2 years of updates. Thats the reason i don’t buy samsung anymore. Hope i don’t need to search for new manufacture. I like htc. But updates are important to me.

Not just to you. HTC should provide the official updated, and although you can say that we already 'have' them, you shouldn't really have to root the phone to have them. A phone like our Desire ain't cheap, we should at least get HTC's service as well as the product. So far, we've had the product, and in most cases very good product, but the updates arn't here, which sometimes makes Nokia look better: me and other members sent them an e-mail regarding an update with kinetik scrolling etc, it happened withing a couple of weeks! Come on HTC, Nokia knows how to listen to its customers, so if you want us to stay loyal, you have to be loyal to us.
That is all. Good Bye.

I'm fine with buying a new phone when the updates will no longer go on them.
I flashed my HTC Touch HD with WinMo6.5.3 to make sure it was updated when I found HTC wouldn't push out anymore updates... I'm just waiting for that point when HTC won't push any updates out, or they won't fit on anymore then I'll probably be rooting and flashing...
I purchased my Desire in about July 2010 for around £390 - that's the most I've paid for a phone and I don't intend giving it up just yet...

However, some people can not afford to buy new phones, just make the most if what they've got, but HTC will not even do that! Okay, Froyo wasn't that bad for the unbranded devices, but why shoul our providers get the updates to brand them?! People who don;t know what branding is etc, will think that HTC is just not as good as other phones, Nokia for example- no barnding, and although there may be some on the case of the phone, no Software Branding. Therefore, updates are pushed a lot quicker!
Back to the point, people like me want to make sure that they get as much as they can for what we pay, and for that reason, I don't think that HTC is as helpful as they can be.
That is al. Good Bye.
Desire / Nexus S
If HTC makes an update ill buy desire if not ill buy Nexus S, maybe........maybe not......ohh i LOVE the htc sense and i want a phone with the sense so i wont buy Nexus S.......Maybe desire z? but it has the keyboard problems and i dont need a keyboard.....ill buy desire (the normal one) and ill flash a cooked rom with 2.3 and the new sense, if possible...

It's only a script.. if we lived in an utopia HTC would just release the next OTA with it..
data2sd, app2sd+ script can create the partition and even align it.. http://www.patriotmemory.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3696
Maybe even with reiserFS partitions for faster access, but I think the dev's are getting to the conclusion that not all SDs work well with reiserFS.. so EXT3

Email received from HTC support

Hey everyone,
I went ahead and emailed HTC support asking about if there is plans to have our bootloader unlocked with a future software upgrade. I received a pretty canned response. Just thought I might share for those of you that don't have the time to email them yourselves.
Direct link to HTC email support added, please email them yourself!:

Dear Ryan, Thank you for registering your feedback in regards to HTC’s latest statement on bootloader policy. While the statement notes that locked bootloaders will not be occurring on future devices, the official policy is still being reviewed as it pertains to existing devices. Please keep an eye on www.htc.com and www.twitter.com/htc for the latest news.

Question on unlocking bootloader for Droid Incredible II.
Hello HTC,
I currently own a Droid Incredible and am considering purchasing and Incredible II. I am waiting to hear if you will include a way to unlock the bootloader at some point. A statement from HTC will go a long way in helping me decide on my next phone purchase...

Unfortunately HTC will see you as a potential customer of a future device in this case. They will likely push you to a device that will be unlocked rather than a device that likely will not be. I'm not saying don't try it, just that you should expect that kind of response.

I did specifically state that I wanted the Dinc II.. We'll see. If anything, HTC that we mean business with all of their devices.
I put in my email that i hadn't yet upgraded but i would likely switch to a different brand because thunderbolt was too big for me.
Guess what i got back? The exact same email that you did, word for word.
I think that if you send them a email with the word bootloader in it, you will get the same response. I sent one earlier today and I also have the same reply, word for word.
I think if we keep asking them to make their policy retroactive for all previously locked phones, they might give an official statement that they're releasing the update for all the phones, similar to how the fans got them to stop locking the bootloader.
i got a response from HTC that appeared to be a little more personalized:
"At this point in time, we don't have any information on if and how existing locked bootloaders will be unlocked (although I, for one, will be surprized if we just leave them as-is)."
Take that for whatever it may be worth...

So, what's the verdict. Did Big Red kick us to the curb?

We've been EOL for a few months but they did say the GB update would be coming... we saw that early build leak and then nothing.
Is the Droid Incredible the new Droid Eris?
I was hoping for some kind of update before they start releasing those fancy new Windows Phones and I bid adieu to Android. I'm thinking of just finally breaking down and rooting.
Where is the easiest, most straight forward instructions on how to root this puppy. A few ROMS look nice... I figure I might as well try them out.
http://unrevoked.com/ unrevoked is a one click solution for root. Just root. Try out some roms, make a backup of your stock rom if you're unhappy.
Root is the best thing you can ever do to this phone.

It's Verizon people. If we ***** at HTC enough they'll cave but I can't write emails for everyone.
Dear XXXXXXXXX,
We are more than happy to be able to provide some clarity to the situation at hand.
Currently, our developers have to work with Verizon to determine when and if a ROM upgrade will be available. Unfortunately, there is no estimated time for availability of any ROM update. Please check the HTC America website for any software updates that may be released, http://www.htc.com/us. Just click on the support link then choose your device.
XXXXXXX, we do apologize for any inconvenience that this may cause.
To send a reply to this message or let me know I have successfully answered your question log in to our ContactUs site using your email address and your ticket number.
Sincerely,
Samantha
I only care because of source code & this is Verizon telling HTC not to update. It's fairly obvious that HTC had intentions of continued support.

I know it can be hard for people to justify taking 5 minutes to write an email they think is pointless but I would like to encourage you all to. Verizon will not change their mind but maybe we can get HTC to continue support on their site. Gingerbread won't be a big deal I know but I'm worried about ice cream sandwich & compatibility with our current resources.

I dunno. I was polite but informed. I simply said that I knew they had plans for it & that older or similar hardware (desire, evo, etc) had received the update so I know it's not for a lack of compatibility or power. I also mentioned my displeasure at the fact that they would rather cater to Verizon than support current customers & they might want to take a page out of apples playbook in that regard.
Lastly I let them know that this would be remembered on my next purchase.
Above all be polite but informed.
Well I just finished my second reply. Basically restating previous points made in further detail but with an emphasis on the fact that apple can't sue them for emulating their politics free policy on supporting their current customers which is a major key to their success.
Once again I implore all of you to be the squeaky wheel. It worked for the desire community. So please people, lets demand some grease.

We're talking about an update that should have been released already that will bring with it more fixes and other Rom components we need to keep development alive for our phone. I used to love CM but it definitely did not blow my mind, lol. Its just Android with another overlay.
Tv out and 720p camera don't exist in all the GB releases (customs or leak). It won't till the GB OTA or RUU is released, if ever.
I'll see if I can shoot em an email in the a.m. Wifi is spotty where I'm at currently.

Visually, there's no difference between 2.2 and the leaked 2.3. If it's that big of a deal to you, root your **** and install the leaked 2.3. It runs fine.
If you want to get more out of your phone, go with CM7.

is it true?!

Yes.. but no guarantee it will come to the Incredible 2 soon and it also means people will break warranty and having out phones listed as rooted in a system. So it has its pros and cons.
yes it is. HTC is keeping up like half of their word. you may be able to do it but you will be in a system on some list saying you've unlocked it. with the options that are out i would just do it without HTC and its alot better. then at least you can put froyo back on and fool them enough to take the phone back
I believe it is the manufacturer warranty that would be void. I don't see how that carrier would be able to get into the HTC database unless HTC sends out the MEID/IMEI/ESN to the carrier.

This is crap! Number one. They are late, the boot loaders are unlocked for those phones.. I think. or they have a quite condescending name "perma-temp-root" - don't ask me.. but anyway yea we will actually unlock ur bootloader.. months from now.. If! you give us all your information and voiding of some warranty.. ummm not thanks how about we let our Devs keep doing their thing... I'd rather not give all my info when rooting. what crap!
I contacted HTC about supporting the DInc2 in the web unlocking tool; here is their reply 8/5/11:
"We certainly appreciate your interest in HTC devices. Unfortunately, we do not yet have any information regarding the Incredible 2 having the bootloader unlocked. Right now, only the global Sensation followed by the T-Mobile Sensation 4G and Sprint Evo 3D. Though more devices may be added later. Once the process is available, supported phones will be listed through our developer page at http://developer.htc.com.
Feel free to contact us again should you have any further questions. If you feel more comfortable discussing issues by phone, you can contact Technical Support at 1-866-449-8358, 6 am to 1 am EST, 7 days a week.

it's pointless anyway.. a GB exploit will eventually be found out.. they are keeping their word half ass. yea ok we will give you unlocked bootloader. umm but we already have them. I'm not giving my information for root I'd buy a frickin iPhone before I do that. and the end of the world would have to come before I do that. I'd buy a clip, and buy some credits for future phones.. This is where XTC might actually shine when software root isn't there but XTC is. for people like me I'd rather pay for root, than have to submit my info and void warranties to get it for free. my 2 cents.
