is it true?! - Verizon Droid Incredible 2

Yes.

Yes.. but no guarantee it will come to the Incredible 2 soon and it also means people will break warranty and having out phones listed as rooted in a system. So it has its pros and cons.

yes it is. HTC is keeping up like half of their word. you may be able to do it but you will be in a system on some list saying you've unlocked it. with the options that are out i would just do it without HTC and its alot better. then at least you can put froyo back on and fool them enough to take the phone back

I believe it is the manufacturer warranty that would be void. I don't see how that carrier would be able to get into the HTC database unless HTC sends out the MEID/IMEI/ESN to the carrier.

This is crap! Number one. They are late, the boot loaders are unlocked for those phones.. I think. or they have a quite condescending name "perma-temp-root" - don't ask me.. but anyway yea we will actually unlock ur bootloader.. months from now.. If! you give us all your information and voiding of some warranty.. ummm not thanks how about we let our Devs keep doing their thing... I'd rather not give all my info when rooting. what crap!

I contacted HTC about supporting the DInc2 in the web unlocking tool; here is their reply 8/5/11:
"We certainly appreciate your interest in HTC devices. Unfortunately, we do not yet have any information regarding the Incredible 2 having the bootloader unlocked. Right now, only the global Sensation followed by the T-Mobile Sensation 4G and Sprint Evo 3D. Though more devices may be added later. Once the process is available, supported phones will be listed through our developer page at http://developer.htc.com.
Feel free to contact us again should you have any further questions. If you feel more comfortable discussing issues by phone, you can contact Technical Support at 1-866-449-8358, 6 am to 1 am EST, 7 days a week.

it's pointless anyway.. a GB exploit will eventually be found out.. they are keeping their word half ass. yea ok we will give you unlocked bootloader. umm but we already have them. I'm not giving my information for root I'd buy a frickin iPhone before I do that. and the end of the world would have to come before I do that. I'd buy a clip, and buy some credits for future phones.. This is where XTC might actually shine when software root isn't there but XTC is. for people like me I'd rather pay for root, than have to submit my info and void warranties to get it for free. my 2 cents.

Email received from HTC support

Hey everyone,
I went ahead and emailed HTC support asking about if there is plans to have our bootloader unlocked with a future software upgrade. I received a pretty canned response. Just thought I might share for those of you that don't have the time to email them yourselves.
Direct link to HTC email support added, please email them yourself!:

Dear Ryan, Thank you for registering your feedback in regards to HTC’s latest statement on bootloader policy. While the statement notes that locked bootloaders will not be occurring on future devices, the official policy is still being reviewed as it pertains to existing devices. Please keep an eye on www.htc.com and www.twitter.com/htc for the latest news.

Question on unlocking bootloader for Droid Incredible II.
Hello HTC,
I currently own a Droid Incredible and am considering purchasing and Incredible II. I am waiting to hear if you will include a way to unlock the bootloader at some point. A statement from HTC will go a long way in helping me decide on my next phone purchase...
Sincerely,
Scott

Unfortunately HTC will see you as a potential customer of a future device in this case. They will likely push you to a device that will be unlocked rather than a device that likely will not be. I'm not saying don't try it, just that you should expect that kind of response.
Sent mine, i'll post the response when i recieve it.
Let's hope we can get something started here. Here's the direct link to the email support page to make it that much easier for those of you that haven't sent one yet. If everyone that viewed this thread sent an email, it will surely make some difference...? Maybe?

I did specifically state that I wanted the Dinc II.. We'll see. If anything, HTC that we mean business with all of their devices.
I put in my email that i hadn't yet upgraded but i would likely switch to a different brand because thunderbolt was too big for me.
Guess what i got back? The exact same email that you did, word for word.
I think that if you send them a email with the word bootloader in it, you will get the same response. I sent one earlier today and I also have the same reply, word for word.
I think if we keep asking them to make their policy retroactive for all previously locked phones, they might give an official statement that they're releasing the update for all the phones, similar to how the fans got them to stop locking the bootloader.
i got a response from HTC that appeared to be a little more personalized:
"At this point in time, we don't have any information on if and how existing locked bootloaders will be unlocked (although I, for one, will be surprized if we just leave them as-is)."
Take that for whatever it may be worth...

I would be surprised if they weren't working on it now. They did it for the sensation and the DInc2 was the phone that really started the natives grumbling, so... It's a race Between hackers and htc. I would love an official, safe unlock but...

So, what's the verdict. Did Big Red kick us to the curb?

We've been EOL for a few months but they did say the GB update would be coming... we saw that early build leak and then nothing.
Is the Droid Incredible the new Droid Eris?
I was hoping for some kind of update before they start releasing those fancy new Windows Phones and I bid adieu to Android. I'm thinking of just finally breaking down and rooting.
Where is the easiest, most straight forward instructions on how to root this puppy. A few ROMS look nice... I figure I might as well try them out.
http://unrevoked.com/ unrevoked is a one click solution for root. Just root. Try out some roms, make a backup of your stock rom if you're unhappy.
Root is the best thing you can ever do to this phone.

It's Verizon people. If we ***** at HTC enough they'll cave but I can't write emails for everyone.
Dear XXXXXXXXX,
We are more than happy to be able to provide some clarity to the situation at hand.
Currently, our developers have to work with Verizon to determine when and if a ROM upgrade will be available. Unfortunately, there is no estimated time for availability of any ROM update. Please check the HTC America website for any software updates that may be released, http://www.htc.com/us. Just click on the support link then choose your device.
XXXXXXX, we do apologize for any inconvenience that this may cause.

Samantha
I only care because of source code & this is Verizon telling HTC not to update. It's fairly obvious that HTC had intentions of continued support.

I know it can be hard for people to justify taking 5 minutes to write an email they think is pointless but I would like to encourage you all to. Verizon will not change their mind but maybe we can get HTC to continue support on their site. Gingerbread won't be a big deal I know but I'm worried about ice cream sandwich & compatibility with our current resources.

I dunno. I was polite but informed. I simply said that I knew they had plans for it & that older or similar hardware (desire, evo, etc) had received the update so I know it's not for a lack of compatibility or power. I also mentioned my displeasure at the fact that they would rather cater to Verizon than support current customers & they might want to take a page out of apples playbook in that regard.
Lastly I let them know that this would be remembered on my next purchase.
Above all be polite but informed.
Well I just finished my second reply. Basically restating previous points made in further detail but with an emphasis on the fact that apple can't sue them for emulating their politics free policy on supporting their current customers which is a major key to their success.
Once again I implore all of you to be the squeaky wheel. It worked for the desire community. So please people, lets demand some grease.

We're not even talking about being rooted or not. We're talking about an update that should have been released already that will bring with it more fixes and other Rom components we need to keep development alive for our phone. I used to love CM but it definitely did not blow my mind, lol. Its just Android with another overlay.
Tv out and 720p camera don't exist in all the GB releases (customs or leak). It won't till the GB OTA or RUU is released, if ever.
I'll see if I can shoot em an email in the a.m. Wifi is spotty where I'm at currently.

Visually, there's no difference between 2.2 and the leaked 2.3. If it's that big of a deal to you, root your **** and install the leaked 2.3. It runs fine.
If you want to get more out of your phone, go with CM7.

If there is enough driving force then maybe we have a chance. A handful of users will not be sufficient, we need enough people for HTCDEV to notice that there is a large enough userbase to warrant them developing the unlock for the phone.
At the moment there simply isn't enough people.

I think so too but they probably already have developed the unlock and there's a fat guy in a smelly Big Android BBQ t-shirt sitting at the HTC HQ with a small red button next to his hand. Attention any needy dev....

I have a scratched up Wildfire S that I am willing to donate for someone to figure out how to get s-off without a clip. PM if your intereseted. I'll even ship.
You MUST show proof that you are compitent to try this and not just wanting the phone. US shipping only. Anyone else out there that wants it if a dev isn't interested I'll trade it for a Best Buy gift card valued at $50 and its yours.
I am not trying to sell this (thats what the Marketplace is for...) but I don't want someone triksy just trying to grab a free phone. If you know someone who is working on this, PM and I'll see if they want it.
PM though, would really like to donate this to the "Cause."
L8r,
You are best off contacting Alpharevx team and asking them if they would be willing to work on it. They are the only team dedicated to unlocking the new phones with S-on security.
but unlock it via xtc clip in a shop is not a very big problem...
i´ve unlocked the WFS of my wife with 10€... in a mobile shop..
maybe i´m mistaken but alpharevx reussed to do it...
Alpharev couldn't unlock it. So they stopped trying.

If you unlock it yourself with XTC clip and then maybe donate it to an established developer on this forum so they can join in the development of CM7, MIUI etc.
He want's to donate it locked so that someone could work on cracking the S-on issue. If this issue is sorted then the floodgates are open to everybody, not just one guy that can work on ROMS for a small amount of people.

Maybe HTC put a special lock on the wildfire s that hackers couldn't unlock it. Or wildfire s is a special cases phone that even devs couldn't see it like it never existed.
EDIT: there fumble is that they don't have this phone that's why they do not care about it. Also ROM Manager wildfire s in not in the list.

This made me feel a lil better about our device http:// forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=18343570&postcount=12
I think the people at HTC know how great this phone is and could be, and don't want it to over shadow their new devices coming out. I don't see the upgrade coming any time this year being so close to the major shopping holidays.
1 more thing, wouldn't it be special if the upgrade came with root access, I mean why just unlock boot loader. They say the reason their not locking boot loaders anymore is for development purposes.
that's their standard answer. already seen it elsewhere. don't expect too much.

3 little things to keep the Wildfire S alive and current...

We need three little things to keep the development and forum for the Wildfire S alive:
1/ Stop obsessing over HTC's unlocked bootloader. We need FULL S-OFF and SIM card unlocking. HTC doesn't care. Repeat after me...HTC Doesn't care.
2/ Shake out your pockets if you can and get your devices XTC-Clipped. For the cost of it vs the effort put into trying to get around it. We need a bunch of S-OFF'd phones and developers to not be relegated to the boneyard. If software S-OFF is possible that will be awesome but in the mean while check the thread about local clippers to hopefully find someone close to you where you can go and get it done.
3/Focus on what we CAN change soonest. Getting back on the main forums. This is the most likely thing to happen with the least effort to keep us current and visible to other WFS users and developers looking for a home.
So get through wasting time on item 1, spend some money on item 2 or chip into the dev process and let's all work on petitioning for item 3.
So check out the threads in my signature and find your local XTC Clip owner and let's get this forum moving.
Thanks to all those still making development efforts and efforts to raise awareness of this great little phone that could.
Cheers.

FYI,the only reason I can't buy an xtc-clip is that I can't afford it, and no shopkeeper even knows what an xtc-clip is!!!It costs around 7000 rupees in India(that a heck lot costly for a 16 year old with a monthly allowance of 500 rupees). I am trying to get it from some guys at XDA but noone is replying to PM'S......Not everyone is lucky in finding or getting an S-OFF.......

Understandable.
Doesn't change the fact that focusing on our own solution will likely pay more dividends then waiting for an unmotivated HTC to do something.
Software S-OFF is in the list. Beg, borrowing, or stealing an XTC clip is in the list.
Group buying of one is in there too.
Essentially anything to get S-OFF users and Dev's to fan the fire under the Wildfire S
Regards,
DS
Agree with csoulr666 on this one. The XTC clip isn't a viable option for many of us. It's way too heavily priced for many of us (about 20% of the cost of the phone itself) and plus, it's not easily available in many countries like India. In fact, people don't know what an XTC clip is!
I'd like to believe in Group buys and campaigns but they don't always work as intended, do they?

So it won't work for everyone but there are plenty of people who it will. It's about raising awareness that that thread and the option to go to someone local like myself exists.
My offer to clip phones for anyone on this forum still stands. I want to see things move forward for us.
Maybe first thing is to get us back on the main forum page now that we have CM7.2 with 9.0 on it's way.
People should research before purchasing the phone then. Gotta understand the risks and what is available before purchasing.
awareness
In all honesty alquez has pretty much put the WFS on the map; no disrespect to any other developers. Having:
a viable [yet unofficial] build of cwm
a viable [yet unofficial] build of cm7
This will, if it has not already, get the attention of some heavyweight devs.
Perhaps they will review and brand it official; perhaps we go on making unofficial stuff until someone notices. I just have to give him a huge thumbs up though when it comes to recognition of our phone model.
Rob
Yeah Alquez is king of wildfire s definetely He is doing so much for wilfire s community...
