Unrooting Evo - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Alright I have an Evo with a broken usb port. I have tried flashing the 3.29 RUU that always worked for me before but that doesn't seem to unroot it because I can still get to the recovery. I downloaded the 3.70 RUU from here http://goo-inside.me/evo/stock/RUU/ but it just says "(bad)" and it aborts the installation. And every time I try to flash the stock PC36IMG it says the main version is older. I tried running the .exe update from my computer but it says it doesn't detect the phone I'm not sure what settings it supposed to be on i.e. USB debugging, just as a disk drive, or... I really need to take this phone back to sprint so if anyone has any suggestions.

Have you tried flashing a 3,70 RUU in PC36IMG form? Just place on the root of the sdcard. If you're still able to get into recovery, flash the S-On tool first, then the ruu.
http://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php/public/forever scroll down to Q&A for the S-ON tool.

If you try the ruu again, try running it with the phone set in fastboot mode. Select fastboot from the bootloader menu, and see if it detects the phone then. Be sure USB debugging is checked.

Unrooted!
The bootloader would check the PC36IMG but it wouldn't actually flash it. I managed to get the usb port working long enough to run the ruu through my computer. Thanks for your help guys.

Bricked evo..help please

ok so i just tried rooting my evo. I used an out dated rooting method not compatible with the version of my phone. I have 3.30, hboot 2.02, and radio 2.15.00.09.01. When i turn the phone on it gets stuck at white htc screen. I can boot into the bootloader. I have tried running the ruu but when i do it doesnt recognize my phone is connected. I have htc drivers installed...i dont know what to, do please help
Does the hboot says s-on or s-off? If your s-off try flashing a rom through recovery or a pc36img ruu through the boot loader.

Well one, if you can get to the bootloader, you most likely aren't bricked, so breathe! What root method did you try to use? How far in the process did you get? How long did you let it stay at the HTC screen? Sometimes it takes a good long while. If I was in your situation, since your computer won't recognize phone, is take your SD card out of the phone. Download a stock ruu zip. Rename it to PC36IMG.zip. put it on your SD card, put SD card back in phone, and boot into the bootloader. It should find the zip, and you select to flash it. Give that a try.
EDIT: Damn,I'm always too late! And yea, as he said, if you are s off, and did successfully flash a recovery image, try flashing a Rom first. Id be surprised if you are s off with recovery if you used an old method with the 2.02 hboot. What happens when you select recovery from bootloader?
Find and download RUU_SuperSonic_S_Sprint_WWE_3.30.651.2_Radio_2.15.00.09.01_NV_1.77_003_release_154209_signed
That's the one that worked on a hardware 004 Evo I used the old method on
Any luck getting your phone back up?
my s is still on..when i go to recovery it shows the evo with the red exclamation mark. I will try putting the ruu zip on my memory card..i need to go get a usb for my hero as it seems i cannot find it and have no other way to put a file on my sd card. any ideas if that doesnt work? i am a little confused as why it will let me issue adb codes in the command prompt but htc sync does not pick up the phone
Yup your still not rooted. Try to get a way to put a file on your usb card so you can load a PC36IMG.zip ruu of your 3.30 rom so you can get back to stock and start your process over with unrevoked.

I have dealt with this issue before. It is difficult to get an ruu to run but I think it is worth it. Find the right ruu for your phone to get you back to stock. Once you have this get your phone in to bootloader and use the fastboot command I believe it is. This will help your computer recognize your phone. Then run the ruu after you have done this, may take a few tries but im positive it works. Good luck.

Do you have a card reader? that would also work. Would probably also be cheaper than a usb cable I would think, not sure though. (unless of course you still use the hero and want a new cable anyways)
Thanks guys your awesome...was able to get the stock ruu pc35img on my sdcard..time to give rooting it a second go..with the right procedure this time..haha..thanks again

Evo ruu problems

Yesterday I ran my evo through an ruu to get it to stock 2.2. After I did this I realized that there was a newer ruu. So I downloaded it but when I ran it it said that it could not find my evo. I have been running the ruus through fastboot. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Did you run the 3.70 RUU?
Yes. I also went ahead and tried to do the HTC sync way but it says it can't find my phone after I start it.
You have sync still installed? Also the HBOOT drivers? Try uninstalling sync and run it again.
Alright. Do you mean the hboot drivers that you use when rooting?
Yurp, the very same drivers.
So I just install the hboot drivers then run the ruu through fastboot?
Right. Boot the phone into fastboot, connect to pc, once it shows up as fastboot usb on the phone, then run the RUU exe.
Alright thanks ill try it when I get home.
Why dont you just download the PC36IMG.zip and run it in the boot loader? So much easer IMO.
How do I do this?
http://www.shipped-roms.com/shipped/Supersonic/
Download the 3.70 ruu /jan 2011, boot your phone into fastboot, connect to pc, once is shows fastboot usb on your phone, then run the ruu exe.
No I meant the other guy that posted.
Ah, well basically you find a PC36IMG with the RUU things in it. Though I'm not sure if its the img or the exe, but it should be an RUU .img.
Alright ill try the thing you told me earlier.
Well it should work, but I'll be lingering by.
Do I also need to uninstall the drivers that come along with htc sync?
No, just un-install the program, you need the drivers.
It didn't work.
Actually I think I had a really old version of sync. I downloaded the one from the evo download section of their website and I think it will work this time.

[Q] Unroot evo! HELP

I've tried using multiple ruu .exe files to run, and keep getting the cannot connect error. I have tried running the ruu file when the phone is unlocked, when the phone is in hboot usb, fastboot usb, and recovery. when i run the ruu and the phone is connected in the htc sync mode, the computer will recognize the phone until i execute the ruu. the computer then disconnects from the phone. I have tried un-installing htc sync and running the ruu without any progress. I have special drivers for the rooted phone that i got off of unrevoked's website.
i am running baseband 2.15.00.11.19, and downloaded the ruu corresponding to this version.
i have clockwork mod recovery version 2.5.0.7 and it will not update to any later version.
I've already flashed for the s-on, and i am currently s-on.
HELP?!
Thanks!

I did that and the phone scanned the image file and came up with a menu that says
Main version is older, update failed, would you like to reboot etc.

That means the rom you are trying to flash is older than the current one. You need to get the 3.70 stock rom. Look towards the end of that thread, there are links to the newest 3.70 rom.

I have the exact same problem, trying unroot so I can install the Sprint/HTC update to Gingerbread. It doesn't look like anyone got back to you, please post if you've found out the problem. Best.
Hello all,
I am having difficulty unrooting my Evo...I rooted for wi-fi tether.
I already have S-ON.
I have PC36IMG.zip on my microsd card.
For some reason when I go into the bootloader (power&volume DOWN) it will not recognize PC36IMG.zip...a quick message pops up saying "no image"
What am I doing wrong?
PS: I am using ClockworkMOD 2.5
Please help.

http://noobgui.de/wiki/index.php?title=Unrooting I did this yesterday after trying all weekend, when you rename the file,if you're using windows 7,don't rename it ".zip" because windows adds a .zip also,it'll become .zip.zip,so just use PC36IMG...and another thing, use the RUU in the link dated 12/15/10,let me know if it worked

[Q] Have I broken my phone

Hi
I have an HTC Desire running oxygen. I tried downloading the RUU for the stock rom and running it. It partially completed buy then it could no longer be recognised. Is there anyway I can get this back to a stock rom. My SD card broke and I dont have the original backup.
Please help if you can.
Kind Regards
Adam
Bootloader info please as usually.
What RUU did you try flash?
What was the eroor message?
Is the phone branded? etc, etc etc...
I just about managed to instal oxygen and am quite new to all this so apologies if I sound like a noob.
I dont know how to check the bootloader.
I tried RUU_Bravo_HTC_WWE_1.15.405.4_Radio_32.30.00.28U_4.05.00.11_release_122704
It says "Updating Signature" and then comes up with "ERROR [131]:CUSTOM ER ID ERROR".
The phone is unbranded and came unlocked.
Thanks so much for the reply
Bootloader is 0.93.0001
use a recent ruu and not a jurassic one
try with wwe 2.29.405.5
even if CID error mean probably ur phone is branded..but worth a try with the above ruu
ensure the phone is full charged, and when running the ruu dont pull battery or unplug the cable
if ur phone is working with oxygen now, then there is no need to run the ruu
Hi
Thanks for the reply. The phone is definitely unbranded and unlocked.
Tried that RUU and it doesnt even recognise the phone as an Android device. Tried unplugging an plugging back in and it still doesnt recognise it.

well its not the ruu that doesn't recognize ur phone..
its ur pc that doesn't recognize it..is it? u can still access the sdcard content from ur computer?
if ur pc does not recognize it (even with the right drivers up and running), then u have an USB brick..search for a guide (if that the case)
My phone shows up as an Android Device and once i have opened that it says My HTC. I dont have an sd card in my phone. When I connect the phone nothing comes up on the device. However it does show on the pc. The other RUU recognised the phone. This one just doesnt seem to want to.

thats strange..reboot the phone..reboot the pc..already tried? ensure is not a corrupted ruu download..
I have downloaded the most recent RUU again and it made no difference. I have rebooted each device many times. I know. I worry that I have screwed the phone. I dont understand why the first one fails at the signature stage. If i could at least make that work I could do the OTA updates
Do you have the drivers installed (worth a shot).
Also boot into fastboot mode -
1. Power off device
2. Boot into bootloader (holding Power + Vol Down)
3. Choose fastboot
If your USB is ok, then the fastboot line should change to fastboot usb.
Then run the RUU.
Just tried the rom before (RUU_Bravo_Froyo_HTC_WWE_2.29.405.2_Radio_32.49.00.32U_5.11.05.27_release_151783_signed). Recognised the phone, started running and failed again on the Updating signature part.

CID error? then ur phone is branded i think
Tried your steps and the phone did change to fastboot USB. It started running fine and then failed on the updating signature part. I also do have the drivers installed.
Also I dont know if clockword is affecting it either. Absolutely nothing when I tried and dind similar situations to me.
What was the exact error(With Number)? CID? As andQlimax says?
Wait, you have clockworkmod working and running?
The exact error i have is "ERROR [131]:CUSTOMER ID ERROR".
Also I can go into recovery and it takes me to clockworkmod recovery v2.5.0.7
Well CID error definitely states you have a branded phone and you need a different RUU.
However, if you have a working clockworkmod recovery why don't you flash a custom ROM?

if ur clockworkmod works, and ur oxygen rom works too..why u need an ruu?
I have got oxygen working well again. Thing is I am selling it as have just got a SGS2. I thought it would be better to sell it with the stock rom. Now it working again on oxygen how should I go about getting it back to stock. As though I was trying for the first time. Thanks for all your helps guys.
PS I have used this phone on O2, Orange and Vodafone. Also there is no branding on the device. The packaging is also unbranded. Its an SLCD version. Dont know if that makes a difference

Reverting to Stock.

ok Ive read Eveywhere regarding my problem so Im after some help.
Currently have rooted Unbranded DHD Eng S-OFF + Custom Rom.
Need to send in for repair so need to stock it.
Ive tried to flash RUU_Ace_Gingerbread_S_HTC_WWE_2.50.405.2_Radio_12.54.60.25_26.09.04.11_M2_release_199042_signed
but keeps sticking on the "Sending" Screen with HTC on phone.
Ive also tried to flash
RUU_Ace_HTC_WWE_1.32.405.6_Radio_12.28b.60.140e_26.03.02.26_M_release_155891_signed
but same as above.
When I originally rooted etc, I backed up my "Stock" Rom and I have restored that to the phone.
Questions are this.
If I install the OTA Update, will this return my phone to Stock ?
Why is the RUU not flashing.
Any help would be greatly received..
Regards
Shad.
You do really need to use an RUU to make sure that everything is completely stock. Are you sure that your computer is set up properly? Android SDK and all installed? If you have a desktop use the USB ports on the back as they are connected directly to the motherboard. The front ones are connected with a cable and are more prone to errors.
Try to factory reset the phone (through the settings menu) and then try to install the RUU again. Make sure USB debugging is on and Fast Boot is turned off.
Heres a guide just for reference.
1: Install 1.32.405.6 RUU
2: Use Visionary+ R14 to temproot, then permroot
3: Reboot
4: Use Jkoljo's Easy Radio Tool to set S-On and set the CID to the default HTC__001 (Unless your phone came carrier branded in which case the CID will be different)
5: Reboot
6: Reflash the RUU
7: Update to the latest software normally through software updates.
EDIT: An OTA update will not reset your phone back to stock. It will merely install a new ROM (or change the current one slightly) and maybe a new radio. It will leave it S-Off and everything.
So if I do
4: Use Jkoljo's Easy Radio Tool to set S-On and set the CID to the default HTC__001 (Unless your phone came carrier branded in which case the CID will be different)
That will take ENG S-OFF back to SHP S-ON ?
Also, will the RUU get rid of Clockwork ?
The Easy radio tool will take it back to Radio S-On
The RUU will get rid of the custom ROM, custom radio (if you have one), clockwork and put Eng S-On.
Well Fastboot is off. USB Debugging is on.
Factory Reset and still Not getting past the Sending screen....
Getting Annoyed now lol.
Any way to install via SD Card ?
Yes, the PD98IMG method.
Run the RUU until you get to the "Start Upgrade" type screen.
Don't start the upgrade.
Search your computer for rom.zip "it was extracted from the RUU"
Copy rom.zip to your SDCard.
Rename rom.zip to PD98IMG.zip
Reboot into Bootloader
Follow prompts.
ok SD Card Method works. YEY
Now SHP S-OFF also.
Thanks for the help !
