Okay, so the G2 can have at&t, but how about cricket?
cricket is like Verizon, so no because cricket doesn't support sim cards.

You couldn't hook it up via phone? Like, forget the simcard? Damn
No, you can't. Cricket is a CDMA network. The G2 does not even have the right type of radio hardware to work on CDMA.
Did you buy one already or something?
OP has a lot of posts on this (G2) forum. So my guess he presently has the G2 and is thinking of switching carriers.
The G2 will only work on GSM networks, and might not get 3G on many carriers besides T-Mob (only EDGE).
If you want to go pre-paid with a G2 I think your best bet is Walmart Family Mobile, they are on T-Mobile's network so you should be able to get 3G speeds.

Since I don't want to renew my plan with ATT...I was told that it requires ESN swapping and that could get me in trouble? Can someone explain what this is and why and what are the chances of them knowing and getting caught?
Oh and would 3G work? I know hspa+ probably wouldn't since I don't think that's what sprint uses...?
No it's not possible, Virgin Mobile USA is owned by Sprint and uses Sprint's CDMA network, as the G2 is a GSM phone it doesn't even have a radio that can work on the network.
If you want to switch to a pre-paid carrier and keep you G2 you need to pick one that uses GSM technology such as Simple Mobile.

Nailed it.
And as I've said in other threads, people need to chill out about the AT&T thing. Its going to be up to a year before the acquisition is complete, and at that time make your choice on where you want to move or if you're going to stay.
Freaking out now 1 day after its announced isn't gonna do you any good.
If i unlock my G2 using gfree or anyother method will i still have my 3G when i switch it to AT&T from T-Mobile? does anyone know of any problems with signal and what not when it gets unlocked? thanks.

You will only be to access 2G/edge data speeds, no 3G connectivity since AT&T uses different 3G bands.. assuming you are currently using a T-Mobile G2 with the carrier T-Mobile... :?
You won't have any signal issues unless AT&T has horrible coverage where you live.
you will not change anything hardware related... you just unlock/root your phone which allows you to modify hardware and software related things. But if you don't touch the antenna software then nothing will change
@CaliBoyPhillip; when I was in the states my phone switched from AT&T and T-Mobile all the time (roaming) and still had 3g reception, the phone supports most frequencies.
no im currently using a Aria with AT&T but im getting the G2 or the G2X tomorrow. and ok so i wont lose my 3G?

G2x will work with At&ts 3g/4g. As for G2 I was told it doesn't support the 3g/4g from at&t. Remember the buy out isn't final yet.

hmmm Interesting... it was prob due to the reason that you were roaming but if he uses an AT&T SIM on his SIM unlocked G2 from T-Mobile, he won't have 3G access I think... The G2 runs on 850/900/1800/1900 for edge and 1700/2100 radio for 3G data, meanwhile AT&T operates on 850/1900 for EDGE and 850/1900 for 3G.... not compatible !
EDIT: source for the bands ATT uses for 3G gotten from here.. http://www.att.com/gen/press-room?pid=14003

THis is correct. The G2 WILL NOT work with ATT 3G. If you want 3G you need to purchase the NAM (North American Model) of the Desire Z. It is sold in Canada on the Bell Network. You can find it online unlocked and unbranded and it WILL work on ATT no problem. It is going to cost you though, 450-550 depending where you get it.
Same reason iphone won't connect to tmobile 3g...amazing people still don't understand this

ok so stupid question but im gonna ask it anyways lol is there anything that i can do to make it work with 3G if i dont want to buy the desire z?
Not unless you know how and which chipset to replace on the board. Ie not possible.

Nope, the phone's hardware is what decides what bands it can use.

Get a desire Z from rodgers Canada the 3g bands are the same
To bad radio isn't software
It's to bad that phones don't have the radio frequencies programmable in software (much like an fm radio). Is that even possible?
or does the wifey need to buy a cheapo when she goes to the states next year?
Yes its quadband

It would help if you say what model number/versions you are talking about. The Euro DZ (or just about any model DZ, I think) has the GSM bands to operate on the two major US GSM carriers, AT&T and T-Mobile. As long as your phone is not SIM locked, you will have voice and EDGE data. But you will not get 3G data.

I know my US g2 got 3G (or 4G? HSDPA+) in Poland. I have US T-Mo G2 on AT&T with only EDGE. And it should work on either AT&T or T-Mobile.

It won't get 3G on both. As you've said it'll either get 3G on AT&T or T-mobile.
The Bell (Canada) DZ will get AT&T 3G. Other models will get 3G on T-mo.

I did a search but didn't see any recent information.
I have the Droid Incredible on Verizon, rooted, S-off, custom ROM installed. Is it possible to unlock it and use in on Sprint's network? If so could someone lead me in the right direction? Thanks in advance.
Does sprint use sim cards? If so, than no you cannot.

What you need to do is to flash a sprint prl and have sprint add the ESN to their database.
Flashing prls is the easy part, having sprint add the esn to their database is the "not going to happen" part.
Other methods involve delving into the underground worlds of cloning, e.t.c, which is a no-no around here.

Only AT&T or T-Mobile are GSM in the US but not sure about their policies on activating phones you did not buy from them. I think you also have to unlock the phone from its current carrier. Not sure if you could buy a sim card for Virgin Mobile or other pay-as-you-go providers and use it or not. Not even sure sim cards are available in the US to just put in a phone like they are overseas?
GSM vs. CDMA
The few phones that I know of in the US that are GSM (Sim Card company's) are AT&T, T-Mobile, Nextel, And Boost. The CDMA ones are Verizon, Sprint, US Cellular Virgin Mobile and tracfone straight talk and a couple other pre-pay guys. I do know that in some parts of the US that you can use a straight talk phone on verizon and vice-versa. Sprint and Nextel phones can be used on boost (Nextel if you can get a sim card from boost. ) Tracphone, Net10 and Straight talk are "leach" phones to the best of my knowledge. They use whatever service is around according to a built in code list. Hope this helps! Google is great for this kind of research.
So I know it obviously works on AT&T network but will it work on Verizon, T-Mobile or sprint?
Tmo only gets edge for me. Wondering if its compatible on other networks. Any workarounds I'm missing?
Have a feeling I'm stuck to att if I want 3g 4g... =[
That's correct. Only T-Mobile uses the GSM network that AT&T uses, but they use them on different bands so the high-speed data is typically only going to work on one network or the other. Sprint uses EVDO and Verizon uses CDMA (if I remember correctly), so phones for each of those networks will ONLY work on that network.
I tested my unlocked Nitro on an H20 wireless sim (which just piggybacks ATT) and it worked fine. The icon was even SAYING. I had 4G. A lot of 3rd party wireless companies are still using att technically, but great as a cheaper data alternative that avoid contracts.
I plan on using this phone off contract with a carrier like that once my Verizon deal expires in February.
Hope that helps.

Does anybody notice that Verizon is now using a Sim card, just like AT&T and T-Mobile? That's because their LTE network runs on the Sim Card and not built into the phone, like CDMA...
So technically, yes, you may be able to insert a verizon LTE card into your phone, and it might work, but you most definitely won't get their LTE connection.
You know what, I should try this at work tomorrow. My coworker has a Rezound. we can switch Sims and see if it works on both phones.
Make sure you have the proper LTE APN settings for each carrier or you won't see LTE or squat!
LOL!! I forgot about that. thx Repherb.
