Alright so heres my situation..
I tried rooting my Epic back when it was DI18,and ever since, its rooted and has recovery... but I cant flash a ROM due to some error .. I havent tried in a while but what I want to know is, whats the best way to get myEpic to the latest update and get it re-root?
Use odin with a pre rooted tar file

If you have a cwm, the ota update will fail. Nothing bad will happen, it just will say there is an error, and leave you with your existing setup.
I would suggest you install one of the pre-rooted el29 packages here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1433101
Then use the auto root sticky, option C, to install cwm. This will give you root, cwm and avoid the yellow triangle. From there you can install whatever you want.
Thank you very much for getting back... Instead of that I just installed The "Blazer" ROM... I thought that was the case though... And even though I have a nandriod back up, I didnt want to take the chance that I mucked it up... Btw... Blazer= awesome!

I went to samfirmware and got my firmware, and there is only one file (a .tar.md5)
What do I do with it? I have odin 4.03

unless otherwise noted by samfirmware, their stock ROMs are Odin flashable.
How would I go about it? Which options would I use?
Sorry, I'm an odin noob.

I odined it with pda and make sure only auto reboot is checked and should be good to go... oh I used odin 1.85

And I presume yours went smooth? Also, did yours get rid of clockwork recovery?

Never checked honestly... Should take it off thought cause it's a md5 so... Hell try it. U.shouldnt mess it phone up if I don't go through u put it in the wrong spot

Okay it worked, but it's still overclocked and it still has root.... Its installing the OTA 2.3.6 right now
(edit)
Just checked, Clockwork is gone.
:| Are you doing this because of ICS? Because if it comes out it will only be maybe a couple weeks before root and then you can just flash that on top of your current rooted instead of having to go through more work...
Hopefully we will get AoSP ICS so I won't need the touchwiz ugly version. (unless, however, it's the new tw that comes with GS3 )
Yes, prep for ics. I want ics as fast as possible! (And I love touchwiz)

Gonna be faster after dman gets ahold of a phone... B4 art even gets it started!

I've searched the forums and haven't found a real clear answer to the questions I have.
First of all, I have the OTA ICS update waiting for me. Right now, I'm rooted running Gingerbread with the stock ROM. I'd really like to install the update, but I've got concerns.
Do I need to unroot my phone first before the update? If so, how? I've read several different articles, but they're all different, and people always have some issue or another with the methods. Is there a surefire way?
I know I should back up my phone, but to be honest, I'm not quite sure how! What's the best/easiest way?
I just simply can't afford to brick my phone! Any and all help is greatly appreciated!
Keri
Heres the deal.. If you update you will be fine it will break root youll be on stock ics .
Then reroot and install agat cwm recovery all this can be done by downloading the root and recovery script on your pc.
You can also use odin and download the pre rooted stock ics rom and odin flash it

Back up your apps with a appbackup in market or use titanium backup
To be honest id just download odin
And the prerooted stock ics and flash it
It should have cwm installed after u flash also

So I shouldn't use the OTA update? Isn't that the easier way?
Use this link to odin flash the same ota ics update as a rom Via odin
Its rooted and just what u want

hey guys just updated to jellybean today and i was wondering how to root my phone. my baseband ends with LJ7 so i'm not sure if i can still root it or not
I update my phone from Ics to JB and I tried to root it with S3 tool kit, but didn't do it. In facti was only able to go to down load and CWM recovery. Plus blank scree when reboot.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1941546 <---Can't fail
Just get a custom recovery and flash this
http://db.tt/UR80U5D9
Its the original ics root zip. It works fine on LJ7

Ya great idea. Even tho if i had to guess hes one off the people who are getting the recovery overwritten with stock and cant master even getting into a custom recovery. So hell be back in ten minutes askin what hes doing wrong. Thats why i recommended the full tar. it literally CANNOT fail. j/s
okay so im hoping someone can help me with my problem. a couple of months ago i rooted my phone succesfully. when i heard we were getting the jellybean update i unrooted in order to do the ota update. well now i want to root my phone again and i just cant seem to get clockworkmod to work. i ran odin3 and did the same process as before but when i go into recovery i keep getting the regular recovery option and not clockwork recovery. i tried several version of odin3 and everytime i PASS. but i just cant seem to get into clockworkmod so i can root. Has anyone else had this problem? what solutions or methods can i use to solve this? any help will be greatly appreciated. thank you

Thanks but I was able to root using the cf-auto-root method. It was a lot easier and faster.

Cool, but unless it auto deletes those files you still won't be able to get a custom recovery to stick. Maybe it does though. I'm not sure.
