[Solved] No Restore point created when updating? - Windows Phone 7 General

Hi all
Thought about putting NoDo on my Samsung Focus, but I hesitated, because then I will, of course, lose homebrew, which is held very dear to me. So I went ahead and installed build 7008 to test if Restore would work...
...and it didn't. Here's what my update screen now looks like:
http://societyofcode.com/iceshares/snappload_22_2_54_246_.png
And according to many blogs, it should look something like this:
http://www.intowindows.com/wp-conte...ne-7-Software-To-An-Earlier-Version-Step2.jpg
So what's the deal? I want to update to NoDo but if this happens again, I'll be out of luck. As you can see, I'm using a Samsung Focus. If anyone else is having this issue, let me know, and if you have any ideas, that would help too
Thanks.
EDIT: The pre-NoDo update doesnt create a restore point, apparently, but the NoDo update does.

with nodo it works but it's only 7004 according to the manifest file

Well, if I update it to NoDo, and it DOESNT restore, I'm in trouble. Wonder if I can stop it if I see it skipping the restore point.

it should
although I didn't get a prenodo backup
So maybe the key is prenodo to set up the backup...
btw o/t
have you noticed any camera settings in the registry? racking my brain to find them and set them

Did you upgrade to NoDo and get a restore point then?

yup and a restore folder too in the appdata portion...but as said it looked like the restore made was of 7004 and not 7008 which is weird

So where is the actual restore point stored?

local disk > users > your user account > appdata > local > microsoft > windows phone update
I'm about to test to see if I can force zune to install the restore from the focus to dvp hopefully it'll be 7008, and remove carrier branding...wha? A guy can hope =)

I think the carrier branding is stored on a seperate part of the ROM, but who knows Tell me how it goes, I'll play around with mine and see what happens.

it should work - well your update that is
dell I am not too confident with but as long as I don't brick I'll be good and even if I do...insured =3 I just gotta make sure it gets to vegas for chris is all

Got my phone insured too, worst comes to worst I claim its defective and AT&T gives me a new one like nothing happened
What exactly are you editting?

in the restore point folder there are 3 files each associated with the zune id of the wp7 device
there may be more but what I'm doing is copying and pasting device id from the folder name into the copied restore point files
one is an xml and 2 more are .dat files
I edited them but zune wouldn't force restore for the dvp...
error code c101002E
dang same error samsung devices were getting for pre nodo...ugh I WANT REGISTRY ACCESS TO DVP!!!!

Got the restore point when I installed NoDo, sweet
Thanks for the info.

hi guys,
I am getting error 80180090 when trying to restore. Not sure why.
I updated to nodo last night. I then added a sd card to the device (focus) to test if the update improved instability issues with phone.
I then wanted to restore it so I could chevron unlock it again and the restore failed.
Help

Heres another question, can you copy this backup and store it somewhere then when you need it you can replace it over?
For example you updated it the first time (1st backup), then you rolled back to original and now u r updating it the second time (2nd backup).
Can you replace the 2nd backup with the 1st backup?
And would unlocking complicate this matter in any way?

Will a back up remember all the programs and contacts and mail settings?
I'm by no means an expert, but it was my impression that it was not a good idea to restore a backup onto a new rom. Things are not necesarily in the same place and it can cause problems. That being said i don't really know of any solutions for you.
Haven't tried it yet, but the new Spb Backup v2.0 will restore data between upgrades, don't know about each setting though. On the other hand, if it saves all registry settings and certain files (i.e. ".ini") then everything should be the same.
if you're installing another ROM, you'll do best by reinstalling all your programs. this will ensure that the programs work with the newly installed ROM. i use MS Outlook to backup contacts... backing up email settings depends on what you use for email; if you're using a POP3 account, i suggest you reenter them.... in my opinion, using backup software to reinstall your programs, settings, etc., is risky and may cause unexpected issues. good luck!

Spb Backup has been incredibly buggy for me on my Telus Touch... does it work well for anyone else?
It freezes unless I do this: back up my documents only, turn off the option to create an exe and don't use encryption.

so,on the telus touch, have you tried the rom upgrade and used spb backup to restore?

Alright, I've been able to use Spb Backup now, and it is great! You can restore on a different ROM or device!

Not dumb, there are always questions when you install new software. But, this is another great feature of Spb Backup, it creates self-extracting restore files, with an option to create a copy of the software as well. So install it to your main memory, and have the files kept on your card. Whenever you need to restore, just run the file, you don't even need the app installed. Also includes a desktop sync app.

Thanks for the speedy reply,I'm just looking now for any issues doing Rom update with vista 64(Telus tech said there should be no problem, but I've yet to get the same response twice from them)Ok i hope this new update is worth the sweat!

No prob, almost forgot to mention, after restoring the data, your PC will recognize it as it did before. I really like this feature, thought all my data was going to be duplicated.

Contact Backup from 6.1 to 6.5?

First, I'd like to thank everyone in this forum for making our phones more awesome than they already are, you guys know who you are. I've been lurking around since I got 6.1, but now I have a very annoying issues that I'm trying to fix.
I created a backup of all my phone's (not sim) contacts with 6.1 before updating to 6.5. However, I realized that same menu with the Backup/Restore functions has completely changed and does not offer the Restore function anymore. So now I'm stuck with a .dcb file that I can't restore, or open up in any other program, as far as I'm aware. Besides the obvious option of getting someone with 6.1, opening the file there and making a backup to my sim card directly, is there anyway that I restore that file, or at least open it up somehow?
Thanks in advance.
See if you can install this?
"Installation was unsuccessful. The program or setting cannot be installed because it does not have sufficient file permissions."
Nope, can't get past that message.

Thought that may happen it's strange as installs on PPC's with 6.5.
Whoops, disregard my previous post, a soft reset got rid of the problem. Installed, recovered the backup, everything's working perfect now. Thanks a lot dude!!
Saving contacts.....
I`m not sure if this is the same subject, but my sister-in-law wants me to upgrade her rom(she seen mine with 3VO and she freaked out.she wants it bad.......the rom that is.)...well,shes got over 100 contacts on the device. Not one on her sim card. How can i save all her contacts all at once before flashing? Thanks for listening.
I sync all my contacts to Outlook and resync my phone after flashing. Makes it easy and is one of the reasons I am now a Windows mobile addict

Oh here is the cab

[xap]samsung carrier debrander (for 7008 and NoDo update - "000-88")

heres a tinny app that will debrand your samsung phone so you will get the pre nodo update.
the app will also rebrand your phone back to its original carrier name (some say you should do).
just unlock your phone and side load this app only one button. restart app to rebrand.
it will now debrand to "000-88", and you should be able to get NoDo, with the server trick.

Hi,
Does this just edit a registry key? If so any chance of a version that would allow you to add your own value (or could you advise which key(s) are edited? I've got one of the JK1 firmwares on my phone and it's removed reference to Orange - would love to be able to put it back and I am sure I found their code somewhere.
Thanks.
Worked perfect on my Samsung Focus. The app has a button to click on that toggles from debrand and rebrand. Now I'm on 7008 and debranded.
Again thanks OP.

Did you try to rebrand it to see if it would work after the update?
the update dosen't delete any apps, so if you didn't debrand your phone with a registry editor, the app will save your carrier name in local storage and will be able to restore it after the update.
Thanks, it worked like a charm
Fantastic! Worked sweet as a nut on my Omnia 7 (T-Mob UK which was unlocked and has an O2 sim). Once debranded I connected to PC and ran Zune, then went to Settings and then Update, it then took a while to see the 7008 update, update ran without an issue.
Re-scanned again to see if there was another update, but no NoDO yet.
have any of you recieved the NoDo?
no. i dont think it has launched in the US yet. i imagine if you could trick your phone into thinking it was european, you would get it.
This worked for me, Samsung Focus on 7008 now. Thanks
Hooray! Success! My AT&T Samsung Focus is now 7008. Baby steps.
Just used it. Sadly, it didn't work Got an error that said something like: "something we were doing timed out" and below that it read "Your device was not updated".
Unsuccesful Update
I had de-branded manually and tried to apply the 7008 update, but unfortunately ever after many tries, It was not successful. It came back with the same error always: "800705B4 The timer ran out on what we were trying to do".
This always happened at Step 7 and immediately afterwards, would show Step 1 0f 2: Rebooting the phone. And then at Step 2 after the phone reboots, displays this failure message.
Microsoft's solution of deleting app history's and deleting content doesn't work. And I don't want to hard reset my phone.
Have run out of ideas.

I got this message the first time too. Basically it's telling you that you need more free space on the phone (how much more, I'm not sure, I had 6 GB free when I started). I went into settings (in Zune), and deleted all synced content from the device. Then I ran the update again and it worked. After the update Zune will restore all your synced content back to the phone.
One thing to be careful of... it will delete your camera roll. No big deal if you sync your camera roll to Windows Live or through Zune, but be careful...

[Q] Backup in Nodo?

Hi quick question for those who have the NoDo already,
is there a full back up on the new updated OS with Zune?
eg. back up SMS, APPS, and all the old stuff (music video blah blah)
Would be nice to have a full backup on wp7!
Thank

Well the process of upgrade makes full backup/restore, even since pre NoDo.
I dont think it does for SMS and others

There's no separate backup/restore process.
However after pre NoDo and NoDo upgrade your device is restored to identical condition as before, with everything preserved as it was.

Lol, that's interesting. What exactly wasn't backuped?
In my case EVERYTHING was like before and I welcomed this fact with satisfaction.
doministry is right, if you did the pre-nodo update, and your phone wasn't sent back to factory default, then it performed an a backup and restore of everything on your phone successfully. the update process was probably that easy you didn't even notice it.
okay... so how about this question:
I have chicks n vixens installed currently but im on prenodo still
If i flash my rom to get 7389 NoDo, and come back to reinstall chick n vixens (which is now a paid app), would this app be free for me since i had it already before?
This should answer any questions about backup and restore.

Samsung Focus (Omnia?) update from 7390 (No-Do) to Mango RTM (7720) unlocked

This post is for those who have had issues with their Focus devices with 1) the Diagnostics App not updating to v 1xxx, 2) the GPRS Manager crashing and wanting to stay unlocked when updating to Mango
**Make sure you are UNLOCKED already and on NoDo**
1. Grab the following tools
Unlock.xml XAP - Here
WP7 Root Tools 0.5 alpha - Here
Samsung Tools - Here
2. Deploy all 3 XAPs to your phone
3. Open WP7 Root Tools
Swipe to the right in order to access the "Explorer" file system view.
Press the (+) at the bottom to create a folder in the root
make the folder name "provxml" and press Done
check and make sure that this folder is created in the root
4. Copy the unlock.xml to the provxml folder
use instructions from the unlock XML Xap link I've posted above.
5. Follow Mango Update Instructions
Use this forum page here as reference. Go through all steps up to step 17 and note the change below. Continue with the rest. Important!
Make a change to instruction step 17 on that page. Open up the ISVTo7720.bat file and remove all entries that have 7661 in it. For example Diff-7.10.7661.8-7.10.7720.68-armv7-Retail-Microsoft.pks.cab.
Save the file and then run the bat
When complete, you will be updated to Mango (YAY).
Here's the best thing.. Samsung Update appears in Zune. After installing the Samsung Update, dial ##634# to run Diagnosis. If you already have run this before, uninstall the Diagnosis app and dial ##634# again to update it.
Diagnosis version should FINALLY be v1122
After you're in the Diagnosis app, dial *#9908* EDIT: *#9908# to open the GPRS Manager. You should see an "unlock" entry from the drop-down menu.
Select the unlock.xml and press Save. It should give a message about Loading the GPRS profile. Let it sit for a few seconds then press done.
See if you can open Samsung Tools afterwards. If you can, then you are unlocked. WP7 Root Tools will NOT open in Mango.
^^ Those were the steps I've used to get my Mango unlocked. Hopefully this is of some use to everyone.
YOU WILL MOST LIKELY HAVE DATA AND MMS ISSUES. RUN SAMSUNG TOOLS AND CHECKMARK THE THIRD CHECKMARK TO HAVE THE DATA SETTINGS RE-CONFIGURED AFTER IT REBOOTS.
thanks for the guide.
i followed it a bit different.
after restoring my pre-mango backup i started the upgrade again.
placed the files in the correct directory and then upgraded to 7712.
There i noticed i did not have jailbreak so i ran the diag app.
(I'm using diagnostic v0103 btw)
It unlocked perfectly after which i continued upgrading to mango
In mango it was again locked so i did the diagnostic procedure again and i'm now happily unlocked.
thanks for the pointers
just a note;
unlock works...however...i'm unable to set my mobile data (3G).
any1 any pointers as how to configure this?

No samsung update for me ....
Small update, have my internet connection fixed.
Had to add a custom, blank APN with the name "internet" After this the 3G connection came online again
Same as adityaksharma no Samsung update though
(Using Omnia 7)
No Samsung Update? That's weird. I DID see that though, my friend has a Focus and I used him as a guinea pig for this process and noted every failure I went through and he never got the Samsung Update after Nodo. As a further note, I went all the way back to Nodo with the ATT update for Samsung from Mango Beta 2 then re-applied the steps I made in the guide. As for the 3G connection issue, if you were able to unlock, use the Samsung Tools program and checkmark the Run ADC option. That will reboot your phone then re-run the auto data connection setup and will configure Data and MMS automatically.
If you don't get a Samsung Update package, I think that's fine also. I tried this on another person's samsung and he didn't get the Samsung Update. As long as your Diagnostics version allows for you to see the update in the GPRS Connection part, you should be fine.
my diagnosis version is 0103 but i was able to open the unlock file with it.
ADC method did not work for me...adding a blank APN did work.
Everything works now so i'm happy

I'm hearing a lot of people having no Samsung update. Even after me downgrading back to NoDo multiple times, I get the Samsung update in the zune client right after mango rtm is installed. Do you recall if your MobileOperator was set correctly? I am running a Focus on AT&T. I did mess up before and still had my MobileOperator set to 000-88 so I had to change it back to ATT-US. I would check that out. I followed the steps that i listed and was able to update my diagnosis version. It was the Samsung update that enabled my diagnosis app to update. Mine was still at 929 even at mango.
Yeah, I think the diagnosis app not updating issue is because of the carrier (I´m not sure what have to be the correct carrier conf to have the option of updating it). If I have time, I will restore the backup, try to update the diagnosis there, and then, make the whole process again.
Thanks once again

Do me a favor. Restore back to Nodo and deploy this DiagnosisApp.xap which is v1122. I copied from my device.
I´ve restored to Nodo and deployed your xap succesfully, but it doesn´t start. It shows an error about license on launching. I think this xap is unique per device, and is not shareable.
I´m trying to unninstall de diagnosis and launch it again, but nothing updates here.
I´m trying another method. If it works, I will tell you.
Thanks
I finally gain to update my diagnosis app. Posting my used method here for other people having the same issue:
Debrand the phone
Unninstall diagnosis
Reboot phone (this was very important for my case, without this, nothing changes :S)
When the phone is bootting (still connected to PC with Zune open) an update for 7392 appears (allthought I tested Mango beta 2 release and other things, I was never able to see this update on my device :S)
Update to 7392 (diagnosis haven´t still changed)
After updating, another update appears: Samsung security update. Update to it (I had an error on the first try, but it worked perfect in the second one)
After updating to this (like the other one, I had never seen this update before in my Zune/device till now), launched diagnosis (##634#) and finally it was there: diagnosis 0103
Now I making the whole process to update to Mango again.
Hope this time everything goes fine.

Yes, THAT's the Samsung Update I was talking about. I guess under some conditions, users get one of the Samsung Updates. The one I got updated me to v1122, but from what I hear provxml works on anything higher than v929.
First time flashing a ROM on WP7...By unlocked, do you mean with the Chevron tool? That's what I have.
What will the difference be between this Mango ROM as opposed to waiting for the official AT&T Mango? Pardon my ignorance, as stated above this is my first WP7 ROM. I flashed many WinMo roms back in the day but this is all new.
Does this process work with the official release?

yes. Do steps 1-4 when on NoDO or anything less than 7712. Start from the 5th bullet point on step 5 once updated to official mango. Once those steps have been followed, download WP7 Root Tools 0.7. It supports mango and will allow you to have full registry and file system access. Also if you need custom ringtones, click on the link under my signature and download my app =)

I got it, yeah, but yesterday night, I connected the phone to Zune and a new Samsung update appeared.
I updates the phone, and today, I´ve unninstalled the diagnosis app and opened it again.
Now, my version is ve.0628. Does anyone know what does this new version offer or do?
