Hello everyone,
I decided that I'd like to finally replace my phone's rom with Cyanogenmod. This post will most likely cover the things that I have done so far and I'd appreciate if you can identify where I could have gone wrong or what I still need to do.
I first went to the site and looked through the wiki on how to install it.
I used the unrevoked method. At first I had difficulties with trying to get it to work as the software didn't seem to detect my phone. So I googled around and found out that one way to fix it was to install the HTC Sync software (thus installing the needed drivers to be able for unrevoked to identify my phone). I found this at some blog I found in the comments section of theUnlockr.
So I run unrevoked and it worked. I now have root access to my phone. Tested it on the terminal by typing su.
I downloaded the Rom Manager from the market (following the step in the cyanogenmod wiki) and updated ClockworkMod to 2.5.0.7
After a couple of tinkering I found out that there's this error when I start recovery mode.
Code:
E:Can't find MISC:
E:Can't mount CACHE:recovery/command
E:Can't find MISC:
E:Cant' mount CACHE:recovery/log
E:Can't find MISC:
I didn't pay attention to this.
So the next step for me would be to back up everything. SMS, apps, and then finally do a backup of the rom.
So back to the recovery mode. I go on and select 'backup and restore' from the recovery menu and I get this error:
Code:
SD Card space free: 664MB
backing up boot...
Error while dumping boot image!
E:Can't mount CACHE:recovery/log
E:Can't find MISC:
Ugh... So I google around for some info on this and found out a similar problem with mine. The recommended solution was to install AlphaRev on the phone, but unfortunately did some damage to the phone. The poster can only get as far as the bootloader and recovery. Has something to do with the phone being PVT4. I think the newer version of Alpharev handles that already.
Now I look around tutorials on how to install alpharev on my phone to gain S-OFF, but most of the tutorials I found recommends that I do a backup. How I could I do that if it doesn't work in the first place?
So then I decided to replace Clockwordmod with Amonra (lots of googling again) then I stumble upon this site where one can install Amonra in three ways: bootloader, Rom Manager, and terminal. Though not sure whether it would be applicable to my phone, I gave it a shot.
Bootloader: I downloaded the PC36IMG.zip file, placed in on the sdcard. Started on bootloader and crossed my fingers. Didn't work.
Rom Manager: I downloaded the free app. Unfortunately, the "Flash Alternative Recovery" is disabled.
terminal: typed this
Code:
flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery-RA-supersonic-v2.3.img
and just gave me a "flash_image not found"
Okay... by then I'm getting a little bit frustrated. I started this endeavor around 10am and got to this step at around 4pm. It's 8pm now as I'm typing.
Back to my problem. Now I decide to try to replace using unrevoked. I try to use the software again but now there's an error that says that unrevoked cannot get to root and that the firmware may be a new version.
TL;DR
1. successfully rooted HTC Desire using unrevoked
2. Having trouble with Clockworkmod (Can't do backups)
3. Unable replace Clockworkmod with Amonra.
I am now at wit's end. I really don't know what to do now. I wouldn't attempt to install Alpharev without doing a back up. Even more so with trying to install cyanogenmod.
Any form of help is greatly appreciated.
NOTE: This is a cross post. I posted this question at the general QA section but I was not getting any responses. Since this is a Desire-related question, I hope I won't get that much flack for posting here as well.
Sounds like you have a PVT4 Desire which needs AmonRA installed not CWM

Yes. I read about it. Unfortunately I didn't read it BEFORE I thought of using unrevoked.
What FW are you on at present? Boot up, go to Settings>About phone>Software information and post up the Software version
If you can get the RUU you can go back to stock and start again - would mean losing all data but at least it'd work. Otherwise you're gonna have to go down the S-OFF route to flash the recovery manually
You just need to replace cmw by amon ra in unrevoked. That'll do it
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
You just need to run unrevoked again and before connecting your phone, select a custom recovery (amon ra) in unrevoked.
No need to return to stock.
If it does not work for the first time, try again and again. Sometimes unrevoked will give you strange errors, but when you try it again it will work.

I tried that. By installing HTC Sync again and running the RUU that I downloaded here in this site. The problem is that the device somehow disconnects whenever I run the RUU.

I'm trying to avoid that for the meantime. I haven't done that much research on that so I actually have very little information on how to do this.

As I mentioned in the original post, unrevoked doesn't work. It says that it can't get to root and probably my firmware is too new.
Thank you for the responses.
You need this (better link so download it again to be safe):
http://hotfile.com/dl/80036791/8a6c...5.09.05.30_2_release_143921_signed.exe.ht ml
Then follow this guide to extract out the PB99IMG.zip so you can flash it without a PC:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=10509780&postcount=102
As I said above, flashing the RUU WILL delete all data so you'll have to start again but should work. If not, you'll need to downgrade first using this guide then run the Asia RUU again:

Thank you very much. Will do this and will keep you posted on my progress.
Good morning.
I downloaded the RUU found in the link you provided and I managed to extract the rom.zip and renamed it to PB99IMG.zip. But when I go into HBOOT, it can't seem to find the file.
loading PB99IMG.zip
No image!
What do you think could be the problem?
I reformatted the SD card with FAT32 and copied just the PB99IMG.zip and finally it worked.
Currently loading the img...
Will keep you posted
I finally got it working. Now using CyanogenMod 6.
Thank you very much for the replies!
I have the same problem as him. tried to download the RUU but links are broken. Found another RUU in other forums but prompt says that
"Error: main version is older!"
can you update the links and I'll try downloading your RUU. Any help appreciated

Well I need to help my friend Unroot her Evo.

I dont understand since we're using the HTC Evo 4g one. She also already had the Htc sync connect.
Any ideas on what the problem could be. She has the latest update and currently is using the Fresh ROM.
Do the flash_image misc mtd-eng.img part of toast's part 2. That will reset the build number. Then flash the pc36img.zip through hboot.

either post in the thread that contains the rom or recovery in question or post the question in Q&A.
you'll have more luck if you post in the thread about the rom or recovery you are using.
I am confused. She has the latest update but is running Fresh ROM? Is she running the Froyo OTA update?
If she wants to unroot her phone just wait until tuesday when the release the Froyo RUU

I am also trying to unroot coming from Simple Root and can not simply run the RUU due to the Version Error. I can not follow Toast's Part 2 due to the fact I can not mount the sdcard, and the ls command returns no results in recovery (but will while OS is running).
I am at a loss as how to proceed...

same issue here....
put the img mtd-eng.img on root of card go terminal and type.
su
flash_image misc /sdcard/mtd-eng.img
reboot
all will go fine then run an ruu ota
it will work fine
I was a simpleroot user too. and had the same issues.
I really need help or direction to where I can get help please. I have been trying root my phone. I followed the guide on here for the Windows method and the Linux method when that was unsuccessful. The phone seems to have been rooted as I have the superuser permissions app (the ninja) and titanium backup worked once I went to the problems section and added busybox. Various other root only apps work. The app root check says I'm rooted but that I don't have busybox installed even though titanium backup says I have it.
My problem is unrevoked will not flash clockworkmod recovery. It says is firmware too new. I am on Telstra branded desire gsm on 2.1 exactly as I got it. Hboot is .75 software version 1.16 I did a factory reset and unrevoked said failed to flash recovery the first time then the next few times the usual is the firmware too new. I tried flashing the recovery using ROM manager but even that doesn’t work. I don’t know what else to do. Any advice????
I have not tried the manual method of installing clockworkmod the way it is explained on the cyanogenmod guide as I don't understand it.
I just don't what else to do. Please help me. Thank you.
hi maniacal26,
it's always better asking before than after having bricked the phone.
so now you are root, i think this is still stock rom. So it's normal that U are not busybox installed into the phone (titanium uses his own titanium... just stick fix the problem into the app titanium to get ONLT to allow titanium working fine)
You can install busybox by the market busybox
about root => get the app root checker it will tells you if U are well rooted
don't use rom manager as it a waste of time... i would advice you to use the recovery amon_RA v2.0.1 work great even to partition your sd card.
first of all you mus be sure that is a unbranded phone or branded phone
branded phone need a goldcard (look into the forum there s a lot of thread about it)
if unbranded u can use unrevoked 3.21 and select in the menu bar a presonnalized recovery which has been previuosly downloaded to your computer.
follow this TUT for branded phone as it seems you ve got one (telsra)
be caution and ask before if any doubt... ask question to this community.
there plainty members who knows a lot of stuff about android.
I have downloaded root check and it confirms I am rooted.
Busybox will not install using that app it says my nand is locked.
Titanium backup works and has installed its own busybox 1.16 even though the busybox app says there is no busybox installed and that it can't install one.
Where can I find unrevoked 3.21 I can only find 3.32 ?
I will make a goldcard now and try again.
Thank you.

Is phone really new ??
Then may be your phone is PVT4 ...
Try using Amon RA Recovery
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=839621
Also search unrevoked on xda, its very easy to use, and if your phone is pvt4, you'll also have to use AlphaRev for S-OFF ....
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=794314
Hope it helps
I bought the phone brand new from Telstra in Australia and never did any of their updates it is stock.
I have tried the unrevoked method that is what has given me superuser permissions it just won't flash a recovery. I have been told to use 3.21 version but I can only find 3.32 so I can't go any further with that st this point. I made unrevoked flash the anon-ra recovery but it just keeps saying is fails to flash is it firmware too new. It can't be too knew as its what the phone shipped with when I bought it in June last year.
Thank you for it suggestions. I do not have pvt4 the bootloader does not say that.
Thank-you again. I will try what u suggested and report back.

i downloaded the telstra one from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=695667 the one i chose is http://shipped-roms.com/shipped/Bra...4_R4_Radio_32.30.00.28U_4.05.00.11_123851.exe
when i attempted to run it said i had the my usb cable is not connected first then upon rerunning it, it said that my ruu image is the incorrect one. my phone is a telstra branded phone i bought on a contract from telstra itself. it has to be the right one.... ????
thank you for ur suggestion. do you have any other advice?
hi maniacal26,
about the new... quite annoying since my phone bought from jan2011 is pvt4
i use unrevoked 3.21 you can donwload it by clik the name from my dropbox
the following link is amon_ra v2.0.1
from now, i use unrevoked to root and instal a recovery (wich would be cmd 2.5.3 (you can select file and choose another recovery like amon ra)
as my desire is unbranded I've never used a goldcard. so I could say more that is saying in the xda's tutorial.
from my own, i used unrevoked to root and instal a recovery - made a nand backup follow up by the alpharev 1.8 s-off.
once done i used fasboot methode to flash the recovery
Code:
fastboot erase recovery
fastboot flash recovery c:\adb\amon_rav2.0.1
i bcp up all sd card on computer followd by partionning sd card with fat32 + ext3
from there i choose a custom rom (from my own - leedroid - which is the more stable and complete) that's all
since every thing work fine
(i advice to run alpharev on usb bootloader)
hope this would help
I'll put a shot in the dark here.
Download the CM7 for the phone.
If you're running ROM manager, Flash to the newest clockwork recovery first.
Boot into loader,
Wipe all data and cache memories, including Devalc
Then flash
Thank-you to everyone who tried to help me. I gave up for while and tried again. I installed amon-ra I just could not get clockworkmod to install to the phone kept saying I had too new firmware. When I tried to restore back using the original firmware off the HTC website it also said my firmware was too new and that I had to use one of the newer roms they had to offer.
I used unrevoked but chose amon-ra as alternative recovery. Worked instantly. Everything has gone smoothly since then. I am running cm7 with recommended radio. I just need to s-off to get more internal memory available.
If anyone has problems like this just amon-ra, it even worked using win 7 64-bit whereas the other way it wouldn't even work using ubunto.
As a side note I have noticed a massive slow down (compared to the fresh cm7 install speed) on the phone once there is too many apps installed. It seems to be more about number rather than size. Regardless of how many, if any at all, apps have been moved to the SD card. I found there was a Tom that said it fixed this but I'm just gonna stick with cm7 anyway. Ill just run less apps and for an update.
Also been running phone on 1113Mhz now and its not a problem in my use with overheating in case anyone was a little afraid to test out.
Thanks to everyone again and I hope this post can assist someone else who is ready to break the phone.

MICROP-051d
TOUCHPANEL-SYNT0101
RADIO-5.11.05.14
Aug 10 2010, 17:52:10
I have rooted it using the Unrevoked method, and all went well, except for when I boot into recovery, then I get the error's
Code:
ClockworkMod Recovery v2.5.07
E:Can't find MISC:
E:Can't mount CACHE:recovery/command
E:Can't find MISC:
E:Can't mount CACHE:recovery/log
E:Can't find MISC:
I tried to make a nandroid backup, but I got errors and none were made.
So, I read more into the thread, and realised that I should have made a Gold Card first, and I read into that also, and made one, even though the superuser app "installed", and I can't seem to find the RUU for this phone. It was originally on the Hutchinson 3G network, but I had unlocked it.
Can anyone help me? I also tried running some apps that require superuser permissions, and Titanium Backup failed, and adfree android reboots the phone every time. Then, I tried using Unrevoked with RA recovery, and then I get the error, Error: failed to get root. Is your firmware too new?
I tried this again, and it did not work, then I tried it with regular clockwork, and it still did not work. I know I screwed up here, and I need some enlightenment.
Thanks for reading and for any advice you could provide.

Oh, but I don't know which to use.
I would post the details of the software and such, but it doesn't let me post it because my post-count is too low, and I'm not allowed to post links, though, I don't see any links at all.
I have
Code:
Baseband version
32.48.00.32U_5.11.05.14
And I can't find the relevant RUU.
what's the S/W version when you boot into Android (assuming you've not flashed a new ROM yet)?
EDIT: I'm guessing it 2.25.771.1? If so, here's the RUU you need:
http://www.multiupload.com/J230M5J8UD
The issue you have is you need to use the AmonRA recovery with a PVT4 Desire, not CWM
dont have a clue
It doesn't let me post my software number, apparently the forum sees it as a link, and prohibits me from posting.
But yeah, that is my software number, thank you very much.
How would I go about installing AmonRA? I tried installing by Unrevoked, and I get the "Error: failed to get root. Is your firmware too new?" error.
Sorry about my inability to understand this stuff, I'm coming from a ZTE Blade and everything was incredibly straightforward, for the desire, there is alot to learn.

Thank you again, I read around, and saw that I should use Unrevoked 3.21 instead of 3.22, and I just did, and it worked, I have RA recovery running.
But I would still like to know how to unroot, just in case.
Just run that RUU I posted, connect your phone in FASTBOOT mode and off you go (assuming you have the HTC Sync drivers installed)!
Brilliant, thank you!
Edit: I know this is OT but is it safe to flash custom roms now that I have RA recovery running?
Or are there any things that I should do before hand?
And if I have a Custom rom running, can I use the RUU to revert to stock?

Hi
I have a PVT4 Desire and would like to do a back-up before i s-off (which cwm doesn't do hence installing AmonRA) so i can install a custom rom. I've already rooted it so i can't use unrevoked to flash AmonRA as it says the firmware is too new. Also i've tried using terminal emulator to flash the recovery but it says flash_image:not found.
How else can i flash AmonRA?

use the attached update.zip as a fake flash method, it is amonra recovery 1.7.0.5. just put it on ur sd card.
push vol down+power, go into recovery and when you see the triangle push vol up+power and then you ll select flash update.zip, it will take you to amonra recovery
How many times did you run unrevoked? Sometimes you have to run it a few times before it will work.
have you tried to push it using the android flasher utility...ill find the link for it

there you go mate..dont know if it works for pvt-4 ...so simple to use i used it to get amon ra because i had the same problems with unrevoked
That will not work because he is S-ON
@MatDrOiD i've tried using that method but it says flash_image: not found.
@thanito thanks for the file but when i went in to recovery and did apply sdcard:update.zip or install zip from sd card it stayed on CWM and didn't change to AmonRA.
@bailz2506 i haven't s-off'd yet i need to make a nandroid back-up first just in case before i can and CWM won't do it for the PVT4 Desire.
Isn't there a PC36IMG.zip for AmonRa for the Desire like there is with the other devices so i can do it the bootloader way?
hi mate,
at the beginning meet same problem... phone rooted but unable to do nand backup
E:misc error file doesn't exist... blablabla
i solved this by rerooting the phone with this cmw3.21 http://dl.dropbox.com/u/22152187/reflash_package3.21.exe
once done, i succesfully made a nanbck.
first i s-OFFed the devices and afterwards flash the recovery with fastboot to install Ar 2.0.1

@fragargon nope that didn't work,it still stayed on the same CWM and didn't differ.
@aamir007: Do you have another update.zip file in your sd card?
Did you flash CWM through rom manager?
If so try to delete the file first and copy the one i attached you in sd root.

Don't say things that have nothing to do with this.
What you could do is return to stock. Then run Unrevoked again.
@Thanito I tried it again and deleted the existing one but still no luck
@Lennyz1988 Guess i'll have to do that. Is there any RUU i should avoid using that will update my hboot and make it unrootable. I've made a goldcard so i shouldn't have any problems flashing the RUUs.
hi aamir007,
amazing that didn't work, it was working and got a pvt4 also.
assuming that you are still on cmw (don't know your version) could you try this one

just launch unrevoked select first the menu and custom recovery (browse to the one downloaded) make sure that "disable security on phone is checked)
should get sorted of this, it was for me.
about RRu depends the rom you have settings/about phone/software you could see all current version rom and radio running on your phone which matter for rru

Try to use unrevoked 3.2 (also integrate amonra recovery) for rooting:

The ruu you flash should fit to baseband.
No warranty for any damage!
For a nandroid backup do you need S-OFF?

hi friends..
while trying to rooting my htc desire through unrevoked3...
i am getting an error
"error: failed to get root. is your firmware too new?"
like this..
can anybody plz help me
why this thing is happening??
i am using official android 2.3 version on my desire
any suggestion plz
When you start your phone with Vol- & Power, whats is displayed on the white screen? Somewhere something like PVT4 maybe? If so, you can't install the "standard" recovery which comes with unrevoked3.
So what you got to do is:
1. Downloaf AmonRa v2.0.1 (from here for example: http://www.brutzelstube.de/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/recovery-RA-desire-v2.0.1.img
2. In unrevoked choose the menu File/Custom Recovery and after that choose the img file
3. connect your phone via USB
Worked for me as well a few months ago.
I had the same problem with unrevoked. I used revolutionary, and it worked great.
visit revolutionary(dot)io
I used this in conjunction with a factory reset, which wiped me back to 2.1.
Use revelolutionary. Its a tool for instant s-off, root and custom recovery.
Sent from my HTC Desire using xda premium
Had same problem with Unrevoked, resolved it by downgrading my system using some older RUU update. But in that time I didn't know Revolutionary - using Revolutionary is definetly much easier than downgrading whole system.

Unrevoked works for 2.2 but not for 2.3. Furthermore, it does not give s-off and flash custom recovery (CWM).

This a solution for the MISC-Errors when starting Clockworkmod Recovery (CWM). If one can start CWM, it means the root process with unrevoked started and finished successfully. But here the root process can't even be started, so your solution won't work.
@ashuonweb:
As PreScoper mentionend, use Revolutionary to get S-OFF and root access for your phone. But read documentary page very carefully before you do anything!
@ all...
thanx to all..
my problem solved by using revolutionary...
again millions of thanks to all above..
