Well I need to help my friend Unroot her Evo.
I have tried the PC36IMG image copying and that didnt work. It would keep telling us that the main version is older and tell her to reboot. When i tried to use the RUU exe it would tell us...
HTC Android Phone Rom Update Utility 1.0.2.10
ERROR [140]: BOOTLOADER VERSION ERROR

Please get the correct Update Utility and try again.
I dont understand since we're using the HTC Evo 4g one. She also already had the Htc sync connect.
Any ideas on what the problem could be. She has the latest update and currently is using the Fresh ROM.
Do the flash_image misc mtd-eng.img part of toast's part 2. That will reset the build number. Then flash the pc36img.zip through hboot.

either post in the thread that contains the rom or recovery in question or post the question in Q&A.
you'll have more luck if you post in the thread about the rom or recovery you are using.
I am confused. She has the latest update but is running Fresh ROM? Is she running the Froyo OTA update?
If she wants to unroot her phone just wait until tuesday when the release the Froyo RUU

I am also trying to unroot coming from Simple Root and can not simply run the RUU due to the Version Error. I can not follow Toast's Part 2 due to the fact I can not mount the sdcard, and the ls command returns no results in recovery (but will while OS is running).
I am at a loss as how to proceed...
Didnt Work...
same issue here....
put the img mtd-eng.img on root of card go terminal and type.
su
flash_image misc /sdcard/mtd-eng.img
reboot
all will go fine then run an ruu ota
it will work fine
I was a simpleroot user too. and had the same issues.

to whom ever may concern,
ok so i rooted using simple root and everything went flawless. i then proceeded to install fresh 1.0.1 1.47 root. it installed the later radio and the latest wimax. the radio is now 2.05.00.06.10 and wimax is 25641. everything works its shows software number 1.47.651.1. now ive been trying to unroot soo ive tried all 3 ruu's. the .1 says error 140 bootloader same with .6 and the 1.47 ruu says error 170 usb problem and will never continue. how can i unroot complete back to original?
thanks in advance for fast reply and help..... David
....i have full root access but i cannot flash fresh 0.5.3 or else i get boot loop
hboot shows up as 0.79.0000
radio shows 2.05.00.06.10
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=721843 Post two actually is what you need to see but I gave the whole thread so you can see the explanation on what those are.
Basically you're running two executes from here http://shipped-roms.com/shipped/Supersonic/ Run the First one First to go to the original firmware then run the last ruu to get all put back to 1.47.
i have already tried this. when i run the first execute i get an error 140 stating the bootloader on the device is wrong. and the last execute does not see my device no matter how many times i try it.
the execute get to udating signature and then it errors out stating this:
error {140} bootloader version error
the rom update utility cannot update your android phone.
please get the correct rom udate utility and try again.
Im not 100 percent sure it would work but this is just an idea!!
If you run toasts part 2 because it allows you to down grade the bootloader using the mtd-eng,img then flash the eng-pc36img.zip. then run the ruu......
Any Ideas if this would work.
I think your situation is not working because you used simple root which i dont believe downgrades the boot loader...

I used simple. Root to root it. Then I did toast pt.1 & 2.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
First I used this method to root
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=837315
After trying it out i must of missed a step or something cause it would not go past the HTC screen.. at that point i went into HBoot and saw that I did have root but no image on the phone
The phone wouldn't allow me to install a recovery manually..I tried this methods
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=834731 I couldn't connect to computer with usb drivers..i installed pdanet and still wouldn't connect so I tried manually and the phone wouldn't allow me to install it.
I then used the same manual method and was able to install the default recovery that comes with the phone. I can't find the link at the moment to that recovery.
I attempted to install the rom before OTA and the rom after OTA..and neither would install using the update.zip method or the hboot pc10img.zip method
I then followed this method suggested

You didn't rename the file you downloaded did you? It must be named PC10IMG.zip for it to work. Alternatively, you can try flashing back the originally shipping rom located in the dev section (since the one from that linked thread was modified to remove the radio and such).
Edit: Link for original shipping ROM (assuming you have a G2).

Strange with S-off you should be able to flash the customized PC10IMG that hot_hands made, may be you had a bad download try to redownload it and flash it again. If not I copied it the day hot_hands made it and have a drop box link for it.

What did you get the original recovery to do exactly?
Anyway,.... if you have the eng-hboot you will be able to use the fastboot commands posted in the other thread to flash the custom recovery.
If no eng-hboot then you will need to use the pc10img method. Have you applied any ota updates? Do you know what ROM was on there before you tried all this? 1St try pc10img method with the rom version prior to 1.72 (1.19 maybe?), if fail again due to older version then use 1.72. Infact as all are now rootable it shouldn't make a difference now.

The 1.72 rom was for the Desire Z not the Tmobile G2, so do not use 1.72 rom on the Tmobile G2.

Hello everyone,
I decided that I'd like to finally replace my phone's rom with Cyanogenmod. This post will most likely cover the things that I have done so far and I'd appreciate if you can identify where I could have gone wrong or what I still need to do.
I first went to the site and looked through the wiki on how to install it.
I used the unrevoked method. At first I had difficulties with trying to get it to work as the software didn't seem to detect my phone. So I googled around and found out that one way to fix it was to install the HTC Sync software (thus installing the needed drivers to be able for unrevoked to identify my phone). I found this at some blog I found in the comments section of theUnlockr.
So I run unrevoked and it worked. I now have root access to my phone. Tested it on the terminal by typing su.
I downloaded the Rom Manager from the market (following the step in the cyanogenmod wiki) and updated ClockworkMod to 2.5.0.7
After a couple of tinkering I found out that there's this error when I start recovery mode.
Code:
E:Can't find MISC:
E:Can't mount CACHE:recovery/command
E:Can't find MISC:
E:Cant' mount CACHE:recovery/log
E:Can't find MISC:
I didn't pay attention to this.
So the next step for me would be to back up everything. SMS, apps, and then finally do a backup of the rom.
So back to the recovery mode. I go on and select 'backup and restore' from the recovery menu and I get this error:
Code:
SD Card space free: 664MB
backing up boot...
Error while dumping boot image!
E:Can't mount CACHE:recovery/log
E:Can't find MISC:
Ugh... So I google around for some info on this and found out a similar problem with mine. The recommended solution was to install AlphaRev on the phone, but unfortunately did some damage to the phone. The poster can only get as far as the bootloader and recovery. Has something to do with the phone being PVT4. I think the newer version of Alpharev handles that already.
Now I look around tutorials on how to install alpharev on my phone to gain S-OFF, but most of the tutorials I found recommends that I do a backup. How I could I do that if it doesn't work in the first place?
So then I decided to replace Clockwordmod with Amonra (lots of googling again) then I stumble upon this site where one can install Amonra in three ways: bootloader, Rom Manager, and terminal. Though not sure whether it would be applicable to my phone, I gave it a shot.
Bootloader: I downloaded the PC36IMG.zip file, placed in on the sdcard. Started on bootloader and crossed my fingers. Didn't work.
Rom Manager: I downloaded the free app. Unfortunately, the "Flash Alternative Recovery" is disabled.
terminal: typed this
Code:
flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery-RA-supersonic-v2.3.img
and just gave me a "flash_image not found"
Okay... by then I'm getting a little bit frustrated. I started this endeavor around 10am and got to this step at around 4pm. It's 8pm now as I'm typing.
Back to my problem. Now I decide to try to replace using unrevoked. I try to use the software again but now there's an error that says that unrevoked cannot get to root and that the firmware may be a new version.
TL;DR
1. successfully rooted HTC Desire using unrevoked
2. Having trouble with Clockworkmod (Can't do backups)
3. Unable replace Clockworkmod with Amonra.
I am now at wit's end. I really don't know what to do now. I wouldn't attempt to install Alpharev without doing a back up. Even more so with trying to install cyanogenmod.
Any form of help is greatly appreciated.
NOTE: This is a cross post. I posted this question at the general QA section but I was not getting any responses. Since this is a Desire-related question, I hope I won't get that much flack for posting here as well.
Sounds like you have a PVT4 Desire which needs AmonRA installed not CWM

Yes. I read about it. Unfortunately I didn't read it BEFORE I thought of using unrevoked.
What FW are you on at present? Boot up, go to Settings>About phone>Software information and post up the Software version
If you can get the RUU you can go back to stock and start again - would mean losing all data but at least it'd work. Otherwise you're gonna have to go down the S-OFF route to flash the recovery manually
You just need to replace cmw by amon ra in unrevoked. That'll do it
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
You just need to run unrevoked again and before connecting your phone, select a custom recovery (amon ra) in unrevoked.
No need to return to stock.
If it does not work for the first time, try again and again. Sometimes unrevoked will give you strange errors, but when you try it again it will work.

As I mentioned in the original post, unrevoked doesn't work. It says that it can't get to root and probably my firmware is too new.
Thank you for the responses.
You need this (better link so download it again to be safe):

Then follow this guide to extract out the PB99IMG.zip so you can flash it without a PC:

As I said above, flashing the RUU WILL delete all data so you'll have to start again but should work. If not, you'll need to downgrade first using this guide then run the Asia RUU again:

Good morning.
I downloaded the RUU found in the link you provided and I managed to extract the rom.zip and renamed it to PB99IMG.zip. But when I go into HBOOT, it can't seem to find the file.
loading PB99IMG.zip
No image!
What do you think could be the problem?
I reformatted the SD card with FAT32 and copied just the PB99IMG.zip and finally it worked.
Currently loading the img...
Will keep you posted
I finally got it working. Now using CyanogenMod 6.
Thank you very much for the replies!
I have the same problem as him. tried to download the RUU but links are broken. Found another RUU in other forums but prompt says that
"Error: main version is older!"
can you update the links and I'll try downloading your RUU. Any help appreciated

Well the first thing you have to do in the unrooting procedure is downgrade the misc partition so you don't get that message . It's all outlined there nicely, and if you have any questions, it might be easier for you to post over there - they're all very helpful .

Thanks again for the help. Everything went good with achieving the "locked oow" but the only problem im presenting is being able to flash the pc36img file due to the fact that i have to press up in order to update. My volume up button is broken (second time with in a month) which is why im taking my phone into sprint. Im downloading and RUU from rootzwiki to see if im able to flash back to the stock unrooted rom from there or by recovery. Thanks again.

If you do an "adb reboot bootloader", and then run the RUU from your PC, you shouldn't have to press any buttons on the device.

There are no commands to run an RUU from the PC - you just double-click it.
Thats where my problem was, the "RUU" I downloaded from the first thread you mentioned was in .zip format not .exe but all is good now, fully unrooted and back to original crappy malfunctioning 2.3.5  thanks again for your help and puttin up with my noobness

hey guys i had to unroot my evo with the unrooting method mentioned above, but i messed up and flashed the s-on and flashed an RUU b4 downgrading the misc partition. The phone also installed the 5.07 OTA with the stock recovery. The phone says it has "s-on" but the hboot is 6.17 and i cannot get it to update back to 2.18, everytime i try to RUU again, i get a error 140 saying bootloader version error. I tried to root again using revolutionary and i get told that the s is already off and get asked to install a custom recovery and that fails every time. i tried to install amon ra via pc36img method in bootloader and it does nothing. i tried using unrevoked since my phone says its hboot 2.16 and unrevoked fails and says my firmware is too new. I tried using htc dev to achieve root again and the cmd gives me an error every time i try to get the code from my phone. i made a booboo and i cant root nor update and i gotta return my phone to sprint since i upgraded my phone to a diff phone. Any ideas guys?

WHAT?? I'm lost. First you said your Hboot is 6.17, then you said your phone says it has Hboot 2.16.
Sounds like your misc partition is screwed up from the different Hboots that your phone had, especially from the 5.07 OTA. If that's the case, there is no current RUU that will work for that (the 5.07 misc). It's there to prevent you from downgrading. You will need the Tacoroot method in order to downgrade your misc partition so that you can run your RUU again. It will give you a temp root so that you can run adb commands to downgrade that misc partition. It's in the rooting method guide from Captain Throwback's link above.

My apologies, i was in a rush earlier. My hboot is 6.17, not 2.16. I tried unrooting and did for the most part except getting hboot back to 2.18. In this process, the phone forced itself to update to the new 5.07 OTA that there is no RUU for so im screwed to that end. I am currently trying Tacoroot method but am having issues being stuck at the sprint screen bootloop so i cant run the flash_image command from the sdcard (since the phone isnt starting fully for it to be in "charge only mode"). Seems alot of ppl have that same issue but havent found a solution yet. Not sure if i just start over if it bootloops or not. I've tried 3 complete times now and still get stuck on the bootloop.
Ouch, that sucks. If you cannot boot into the operating system, then there might not be anything that you can do.

i can boot into the phone, its just when doing the tacoroot method, i cannot get past the step where the phone goes into the loop and you have to enter 3 commands.

The looping doesn't matter - you should still have adb access, unless you didn't follow the instructions exactly.

i just stumbled over this method.. unrevoked web site has a s-on tool, go to there site ://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php/public/forever you will see the blah blah blah tutorial.. scroll down until you get down to:
How can this be removed or undone if I need to take my phone in for service?
Download the latest ''S-ON'' tool to a temporary location and follow the installation instructions above to run it. Once your phone is S-ON, you may lose root permanently if you install an official update.. download it to your phone.. recovery mode.. flash from zip.. poof.. S-ON
now head over to htcevohacks, ://htcevohacks.com/htc-evo-hacks/how-to-unroot-your-htc-evo-4g/ get htc update rom utility for your phone.. that erases entire phone and and places sprints latest stock factory rom and everything back on your phone.. do all sprint updates.. and return to sprint and recieve your refurbished motorola photon.. sprint htc evo 4g has been dissed-continued.. oh yeah if you dont do it in that order.. you will loose your root with update utility.. which means you will have to use unrevoked3 to reroot and flash s-on tool .. done the right way its only two steps.. peace out
