Right now I am running stock everything just unrevoked rooted on 2.1
Basically I want to upgrade to stock 2.2 and I'll go from there as far as what rom I will actually use this time around -etc-.
But I kind of want to start off fresh just contacts, pics and rooted 2.2
From my understanding I cant just upgrade via the pop up on the phone to 2.2 can i?
Thanks

Yes, you can. So long as you didn't modify the essential programs. You'll lose root, but can gain it back with unrevoked.

If he currently has a custom recovery I think he will fail to do the OTA update. I know that you must have the stock recovery in order to go this method.
You could always just use the RUU program then run unrevoked 3.21 to gain root again. This will how ever erase everything you have the phone except for the SD card.
Yes the ota update didnt work.

You're going to have to use the RUU program or extract the rom.zip file from the RUU program to restore your phone. You can either RUU your phone back to stock 2.1 or you can just go 2.2. I would recommend going the 2.2 method as it saves you the hassle of waiting for the phone to download the OTA.
You should be able to find instructions on how to use the RUU throughout the forum or this section even. Just use the search button .
*most people including my self was unable to use the RUU program due to driver conflicts. The only way a lot of use was able to use the RUU was to extract the rom.zip file and then rename it to PB31IMG.zip and flash it via Hboot.*
Again do a search and you should find instructions.
Side note: Be careful during the hboot update process. It will either send you to recovery or to fastboot. If you get sent to fastboot just select "bootloader" and hit the power button. This will put you back into hboot and the update will continue on its own.
If sent to recovery just select reboot phone and then hold volume down right afterwords to make sure you get into hboot again.
Caution: Never pull the battery during hboot or radio flashing as you will be very sorry and have a nice paper weight to remind you to never do this again.

The 2.2 RUU is now the Stock Rom that comes with the phone. The only issue I see flashing the 2.2 RUU would be if he had upgraded his radio beyond what the RUU would have done.
Also technically yes you will void your warranty by using the RUU as it wont be considered an official update according to your carrier. Only OTA's are considered official.
Then again you already voided your warranty when you rooted the phone so it shouldn't really matter.
When I boot up it gets past the HTC quietly brilliant goes to the droid eye then after the 2 red balls go back and forth the second time the phone just sits and freezes there. what did I do wrong?
so i managed to get booted, but I boot and it shows me as having no service and plenty of my programs just freeze up and pop up saying force close or wait

Interesting. Where exactly did you get the ruu files? Also did you do anything while rooted with 2.1 like load custom rom's that could have required you to change anything beyond just flashing the rom?
I've never gone past stock when I was rooted but in one of my earlier threads when I joined this forum I decided to go back to unrooted as I needed my phone to work and didn't want to run the risk of it dieing on me due to a stupid mistake. *It's currently my only phone*
I've flashed the 2.2 ruu file twice now and had no issues what so ever.
Also did you pull your battery while waiting for the phone to boot up for the first time after flashing the RUU? If you did then this might explain why as the first boot always takes the longest as it's building caches I think and possibly doing settings and so forth.
I can't root. Unrevoked3 seems like a piece of ****. Just doesn't work at all, tried 3 machines and two operating systems with it and it just doesn't work at all. It says to go to hboot USB but it just boots into the OS rather than in to bootloader... I've tried it at least 28 times. So screw that--
So, how do I root without it?? The specs on the Evo:

download the combo pack for latest Radio, WiMAX, PRI & NV
PS. before you do the second step, find a rooted rom you fancy, download it and place it on the root of your sdcard. you will thank me later. i prefer deodexed stock roms...also, word to the wise, on the second step theres a file thats called "Rooting OTA Files.zip" that you will need to download and extract to the sdcard. When you do this it will create a folder on your sdcard with the 5 files in it. take the files out of the folder and copy them to the root of the sdcard and delete the empty folder. that is the only thing that this process didnt make perfectly clear. other than that everything works fine.

This was how I rooted so it can be done.

You need to flash a rooted ROM. If you don't want to lose all your settings just flash the rooted stock ROM and wipe the cache and dalvik only.

whats the issue your having? i saw your update and it said success but was that following my steps? if so, that shoudl have given you everything, all you need to is install rom manager from the market and flash a alternative recovery.
Ok mods, I know this normally isn't the place, but I think this is very important as I'm seeing more and more semi bricks, some of which are not recoverable without HTC signing keys!
So I ask you mods, please don't lock this, if anything it really needs to be a sticky!
That being said, if you are s-off, do NOT flash the signed offical PC10IMG.zip. if you don't have the correct rom on there when you do, as per the unroot thread you will get stuck.
Let me give u an example of what I've been seeing and why its happening so everyone understands. Example: you perm root/s-off your phone. You decide to do some rom playing. You end up boot looping and can't fully boot into android. So u say hey, ill reload pc10 and start over, WRONG.
What happens is s-off does no checks, sigs, version number etc. So when you load it up it starts to flash. Hboot(s-on) is first, then recovery, then radio. Thing is it has to reboot to do radio, so it reboots, at this point your s-on so it does a version check. "Main is older" then it quits before ever touching the system.img or boot.img. at this point you are locked. You have s-on, stock recovery, and can't boot android. Long story short, your screwed.
Now depending on the rom/kernel u had/have installed you may have adb access. At this point you have a small chance of recovering, which is better then some. I just spent the last 5 hours working with someone on a fix and think we got it, but the bat has died and will have to pick back up tomo. If this works or not, I also have one more idea we can try. I will update OP with any fixes we find.
*If your system was bootable when you started this, it may still boot. but you will be s-on, stock recovery, and still on whatever rom you were running. at this point you will have to hex edit to downgrade, or wpthis.ko if there is one for your kernel to get back to s-off.
*ive seen some people saying. i did it, it worked for me, but don't add any supporting info. this is bad for people new to android cause it makes them feel they will be ok. the only way this can work is if you have a version installed as old or older then the official img, or if you take hboot out of the update which then makes it no longer the official update. but my question is why are you flashing this? if you want to fully unroot, then follow the unroot guide. if you just want to go back to stock w/root, grab one of the stock w/root roms.
Long story short, do your rom flashing from recovery. Stay out of hboot unless you are following proven instructions to a T, or being walked though be a "pro". I hope this helps save some people!
* if you just read all this going DAMN, i already did that, then go here:

When u say u saved a phone. Do u mean u stopped someone before they did it, or you mean u have a working fix. Pls post fix if u have one. I will post mine as soon as I confirm it.
Btw- I have seen 5 happen in the last 3 days. As I haven't gave up on any yet, some are worse off then others and only 2 have a possible fix in the am, well a fix I know of.
After I permarooted, I decide to flash a Z ROM. I did, and I didn't care for Sense, so I flashed PC10 and didn't have any issues. Mind you, I didn't flash the OTA at that point either. Phone booted up without an issue, I got the OTA almost immediately, and I permarooted again.
Basically, if you applied the OTA, don't flash PC10 to get stock again.
So does that mean the instructions for how to Un-Root are no good?

I unrooted my phone, no problems.
No the instructions to unroot are correct because at the beginning you flash an alternate misc.img to change the main version number. I got stuck the other day because my phone wouldnt boot and i couldn't flash the ota because i had removed google goggles and some other system apps so i tried to downgrade using PC10IMG.zip and it cancelled during installation just as stated in the op and i was somehow able to flash the misc.img through fastboot and reflash with PC10IMG.zip

If you did not flash the stock rom before you flashed the pc10, you got lucky. When it reboots half way though, it does a version check, and the rom version you happened to be running must have been an older base. If your phone is bootable and you flash the pc10 OUT OF ORDER it will lock you down that way, ie locked on sense. If anyone wants to go back to stock, just flash one of the stock w/root roms in recovery or via rom manager... trust me on this, there are more people screwing up there phone because of this then anything, just not posting about it. I've been up all hours of the night, helping differnt people the last few days.

No the unroot guide is ok. If you notice, the first thing it has you flash is the stock w/root rom. Like I said if you follow proven instructions to a T, you will be ok. That is if you want to go back to non-root only though. If you just want stock with root, flash a stock with root rom via RECOVERY or ROM MANAGER.
Im not to sure how it all works and i just got up a little bit ago .
but since s-off doesnt check the sign couldnt we unpack and repack pc10img with the hboot with s-off?

Well he's edited his post now, and people have followed his instuctions and bricked their phones.
So just to confirm before I brick mine: The instructions in their current form will not brick my phone, right?
I had s-off when running baconbits. I tried to revert back to stock but couldn't. I then flashed pauls prerooted phone rom and tried to install the stock rom back onto the phone. I seems to have removed the s-off and now displays s-on. I am permanently rooted, but fastboot still shows s-on. Was this caused because I tried to flash the pc10img.zip? Now how do i revert back to stock? I don't have a nandroid backup for the stock rom, just paul's which after a recovery still displays s-on. It doesn't loop, I just can't install anything else on there.
I flashed pc10 and it turned S-ON. But when I booted it up I still had root acess, so it was like a temp root but where I could not write to the system. I took the ko file from the perm root and hex edited it to match the kernal on my phone.. boom rooted again and I was able to flash recovery and do a nand restore
I tested it out again by hbooting pc10.. and I was able to obtain s-off by changing the kernal number in the ko file

Exactly. If you actually follow the directions in the thread you will be fine. I've done it more than a few times and have not had any problems yet.
I have also updated the instruction on the unroot guide aswell.
I was running the original Sense rom that was loaded via hboot which kept me at s-off. I was able to revert back to stock using the PC10 zip from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=831398 At the time I had no clockwork recovery. Was what I unsafe?
Thanks for the piece of mind. I don't want to unroot just yet, I'm running pretty much the stock rom w/ ota and bacon bits anyway, so........ Still it's nice to know that I can get back to stock should I NEED to.
Okay so I did this and I didn't brick my phone...and still have root/s-off
Did an ota update, after I found out there was perm root I perm root g2 s-off, then I went and downloaded clockwork/rom manager
Created a backup of the current g2, and did a wipe
Then hboot to sense ui (still have root). I went into clockwork create another backup. Played around with desire z rom.
After I decided to go back to stock 2.2 performed a restore with clockwork and now I am back to my original g2 stock.
So am I missing something here?

Well the first thing you have to do in the unrooting procedure is downgrade the misc partition so you don't get that message . It's all outlined there nicely, and if you have any questions, it might be easier for you to post over there - they're all very helpful .

Thanks again for the help. Everything went good with achieving the "locked oow" but the only problem im presenting is being able to flash the pc36img file due to the fact that i have to press up in order to update. My volume up button is broken (second time with in a month) which is why im taking my phone into sprint. Im downloading and RUU from rootzwiki to see if im able to flash back to the stock unrooted rom from there or by recovery. Thanks again.

If you do an "adb reboot bootloader", and then run the RUU from your PC, you shouldn't have to press any buttons on the device.

There are no commands to run an RUU from the PC - you just double-click it.
Thats where my problem was, the "RUU" I downloaded from the first thread you mentioned was in .zip format not .exe but all is good now, fully unrooted and back to original crappy malfunctioning 2.3.5  thanks again for your help and puttin up with my noobness

hey guys i had to unroot my evo with the unrooting method mentioned above, but i messed up and flashed the s-on and flashed an RUU b4 downgrading the misc partition. The phone also installed the 5.07 OTA with the stock recovery. The phone says it has "s-on" but the hboot is 6.17 and i cannot get it to update back to 2.18, everytime i try to RUU again, i get a error 140 saying bootloader version error. I tried to root again using revolutionary and i get told that the s is already off and get asked to install a custom recovery and that fails every time. i tried to install amon ra via pc36img method in bootloader and it does nothing. i tried using unrevoked since my phone says its hboot 2.16 and unrevoked fails and says my firmware is too new. I tried using htc dev to achieve root again and the cmd gives me an error every time i try to get the code from my phone. i made a booboo and i cant root nor update and i gotta return my phone to sprint since i upgraded my phone to a diff phone. Any ideas guys?

WHAT?? I'm lost. First you said your Hboot is 6.17, then you said your phone says it has Hboot 2.16.
Sounds like your misc partition is screwed up from the different Hboots that your phone had, especially from the 5.07 OTA. If that's the case, there is no current RUU that will work for that (the 5.07 misc). It's there to prevent you from downgrading. You will need the Tacoroot method in order to downgrade your misc partition so that you can run your RUU again. It will give you a temp root so that you can run adb commands to downgrade that misc partition. It's in the rooting method guide from Captain Throwback's link above.

My apologies, i was in a rush earlier. My hboot is 6.17, not 2.16. I tried unrooting and did for the most part except getting hboot back to 2.18. In this process, the phone forced itself to update to the new 5.07 OTA that there is no RUU for so im screwed to that end. I am currently trying Tacoroot method but am having issues being stuck at the sprint screen bootloop so i cant run the flash_image command from the sdcard (since the phone isnt starting fully for it to be in "charge only mode"). Seems alot of ppl have that same issue but havent found a solution yet. Not sure if i just start over if it bootloops or not. I've tried 3 complete times now and still get stuck on the bootloop.
Ouch, that sucks. If you cannot boot into the operating system, then there might not be anything that you can do.

i can boot into the phone, its just when doing the tacoroot method, i cannot get past the step where the phone goes into the loop and you have to enter 3 commands.

The looping doesn't matter - you should still have adb access, unless you didn't follow the instructions exactly.

i just stumbled over this method.. unrevoked web site has a s-on tool, go to there site ://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php/public/forever you will see the blah blah blah tutorial.. scroll down until you get down to:
How can this be removed or undone if I need to take my phone in for service?
Download the latest ''S-ON'' tool to a temporary location and follow the installation instructions above to run it. Once your phone is S-ON, you may lose root permanently if you install an official update.. download it to your phone.. recovery mode.. flash from zip.. poof.. S-ON
now head over to htcevohacks, ://htcevohacks.com/htc-evo-hacks/how-to-unroot-your-htc-evo-4g/ get htc update rom utility for your phone.. that erases entire phone and and places sprints latest stock factory rom and everything back on your phone.. do all sprint updates.. and return to sprint and recieve your refurbished motorola photon.. sprint htc evo 4g has been dissed-continued.. oh yeah if you dont do it in that order.. you will loose your root with update utility.. which means you will have to use unrevoked3 to reroot and flash s-on tool .. done the right way its only two steps.. peace out
