[Q] Help please - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have my Epic running SyndicateROM 1.0.2. Can anyone tell me if its a normal problem of the rom to mess up my mic? People say I sound faraway or like I'm whispering and in reality I'm almost yelling. I need to know if its my rom or if I should switch out the phone for a new one I've only had it a week and have 30 days to switch to a newer one or should I just get an Evo?

Probably best to use the EB13 Extended tar, odin it to your phone (do a nand backup first).
Then check out how it sounds.
It sounds like a hardware issue really; but you could double check that way.
If it is; you'll want to odin a stock tar to bring it to sprint for a replacement. They won't fix or replace it with a custom ROM on it.
Good luck

I would try opening up the voodoo control application and check settings. There is a mic profile in there you can change. See if that makes any difference switching back and forth between profiles. Since 1.0.2 includes the voodoo sound in the kernel it seems that maybe something just got messed up with that. If that doesn't work odin back to stock as last person said to check that it's not a hardware problem. If it's better after odin then go back to ACS again and see if it's fixed, maybe just a bad flash as my mic actually seemed to be better after going from stock to ACS.
I personally wouldn't recommend switching to evo, its a slower phone, and the screen while slightly bigger isn't nearly as nice, plus even if you use virtual kb a lot its still nice to have the option of the physical.

Do you think I could get the Nexus S? You think it'd be a good trade? I heard it wasn't as good as the Epic but I wouldn't know.

Personally the keyboard in the epic is more important to me than the additions nexus S would give.
Differences:
Nexus S
+ Has NFC and Gingerbread.
+ Thinner
- No microSD slot
- No hardware KB
Epic
+ Hardware KB
+ microSD slot
- only (officially) on 2.2 - Though this is likely to change soon w/ CM7, and hopefully once Nexus S is released it will make software updates for our Epic easier.
- No NFC (I couldn't care less)
As far as I'm concerned the only down side of the Epic vs Nexus is software which can be fixed by our great devs here, and hopefully once the Nexus S 4G source drops there no longer is a software gap.

my questions & concerns about the epic4g!

okay so i made the leap and traded my evo for a newer epic4g. i love the clarity of the screen and the overall speed blows the evo away. downside is some of the bright colors look washed out and the screen is smaller.
my question is when is the epic getting official froyo so we can have more development? such as roms & kernels?
will the epic even get gingerbread at all?
my concerns and observations are:
the proximity sensor is very sensitive and i find it often does not work as even when i have auto rotation disabled i find certain apps like my phone will go into landscape mode and get stuck there.
cannot update my prl or profile without the use of qpst? i mean i assume this is a software flaw? ive seen lots of people have this issue and it must be reported and fixed by samsung IMO.
really bad radio signal life compared to the evo. i have no idea what the difference would be?
ive noticed compared to the evo i have less free ram. i usually had about 200-250mb free and now i have only 140-170. whats the difference here? would a custom kernel possibly fix this?
also id love to know why there is no working version of apps2sd as i feel it would benefit the free memory the phone has.
as i said im not here bashing but giving my observations and to tell you the truth if these issues cannot be fixed ill for sure be going back to the evo. i sorta see why samsung have a bad rep.
can anybody give me any fixes for some of the issues i posted?

Auto-rotation has nothing to do with the proximity sensor. You probably need to run /system/bin/sensorcalibutil_yamaha as root and follow the instructions.

Be careful op. People here like to flash their e-peens when you have a negative observation towards the phone.
Luckily some are more open minded and will help
Have you rooted the epic?
I'm on stock froyo dk28 and I get almost 2 days out of my phone, but that's with only using 4g and wifi because 3g is of no point to me unless I go somewhere out the city
There's a developer "noobnl" who's working on a gb port, but its not gonna be completed until official froyo sauce straight from samsung comesout
You should've held the evo for a bit until the epic got official 2.2 because then you would've definitely not have had any type of buyers/traders remorse

yes im fully rooted running clockwork3/ext4 with the bonsai rom. ive seen many, many complaint of not being able to update prl or profile at all. ive even done several data resets.
do you guys have the link for the working version of apps2sd?
as i said im not bashing the phone, i do like it alot just seems alot of issues with it atm.

yes compared to my evo i have really bad signal strength right now.
There mightve been something wrong with the modem flash
I couldn't upate m prl when I first updated to dk28 but after I flashed back to 2.1 then 2.2 it was fixed? So idk I would try that
And my phone also has horrible signal cmpared to my hero, and the 3g speeds and ping are horrible compared to what I got on the hero, and also apparently there's a cap of 1mb/s upload on the epic on 4g
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
They capped the 4g upload speed? I don't have 4g in my area but that sucks.
to the OP..
try ##786# <reset> <enter MSL>
let it go through it's paces.. it will factory reset BUT.. after reset, it will perform hands free activation, then reboot, then update your PRL, then restart the radio, then look for software updates.. (this will also most likely fix GPS if you're having problems with that too)
Hope this helps
EDIT: for the 'getting stuck in landscape mode' i have encountered this on occasion as well.. seems like the settings for 'use sensor to auto rotate' or something like that in your launcher or in menu > settings> etc.. might be conflicting.

Another DI18 or DK28 Thread.

Well here I am, tried out DK28 since late december and ive had it till now... Im seeing that we are pretty much getting nowhere without source, and I am starting to get really, really crappy battery life (6 hours). So I'm browsing XDA and I see a lot of DK28 back to DI18 threads and people saying "Oh I'm back on Syndicate, or Baked Snack, and I'm loving it with a good old source rom and custom kernal" so it got me thinking, the Froyo features... "hmm App2Sd... not a big deal to me, i only install a handfull of apps, Flash 10.1.. well **** i cant even get over 200kbps download so im not going to use flash anytime soon", and thats about it (as far as i know)... So, tonight I downloaded the old DI18 tar.md5 and my old syndicate rom for some good old 1.2 GHZ overclocking... But now I'm thinking, is it worth it to downgrade? I really like my gingerbread theme that I have flashed, and well everything else is custom... but is it worth the downgrade? And what about everything being edify nowadays? What do you guys think?
lol, i go back and forth every day practically. the good thing is all these awesome developers give us so many choices and different things to try out. i usually end up back on a custom kernel for the battery life, but i don't think there is any one right answer. maybe when official Froyo drops, that will be the right answer..... but then of course we'll probably have Gingerbread leaks, lmao.
i had to go back, with the bugs and the battery life.. just wasn't worth it to me. syndicate and dI18 are fine for now, froyo is on its way. IMO Retro is in!
I couldn't go back. I love how snappy my phone is on ext4 and I love froyo. I don't see the bugs that people talk about. Sure every os had bugs but its not bad at all. In the end though its all up to in and what you want.

I am so glad I'm not the only one who experienced calling reliability on DK28. Sometimes it will dial (or appear to be dialing) but with no sound. This highly annoying when you're just trying to make a quick phone call.

I think its a bug and you can toggle speakerphone as a workaround.
Maybe I'll try it if I go back to DK28.

DK28 to EC05
So, XDA rocks, but I'm stuck.
I've got DK28.
What is "flash" versus using Odin?
Is the Samsung cable REALLY that awful? I have not one computer that is recognizing the phone.
I don't want to lose my data. What are my options?
How can I get to EC05 now? How can I get comfortable "flashing" around without losing my data? What does that mean? I mean all data. Apps on home screens, apps etc.
Thanks! I hope you can point me to the right steps to just get my phone back to normal stock.
REALLY would appreciate a nice set of consolidated definitions.
Thanks!
Its not that hard but you can save all your data using rom manager!
Stop necro'ing threads, people.
Well, at least I learned that "necro" is now a verb. Awesome!

What will Sprint/Samsung do?

Ok, so with the issues that EB13 has, will Sprint just correct the issues and release EB13 again with the fixes or will it be a new update? Maybe just some patches? IDK! Does anyone know how they will go about doing this?
Im pretty sure it will have a different name.

That's a given since the name is indicative of when it was compiled.
Most likely we won't see any kind of fix before the 20th at the earliest, and if it doesn't come before April then it's probably never coming and we will be SOL like the Moment users who were stuck with a ridiculously buggy 2.1 with no support from Samsung/Sprint.
Hmm well good point guys. Would you suggest running EB13 with the patched kernel(s) and/or a custom ROM? I'm looking for something stable and plan on using it for a while...

Theyll just take Frozen or Bonsai or ACE, slap some Sprint footprints here and there to make it their own, remove OC from the kernels and make it their official release.

LOL, na then that would have happen months ago!
Once they put out a product, they only update it in response to mass outrage. Google keeps popping out updates and the manufactures and carriers can't slap bloatware on fast enough, so they lose incentive to update at all. They clearly don't focus their efforts as hard as these wonderful developers do! But why would they? They're hoping you'll get so frustrated that you'll move on to their next, barely-improved device!

SO TRUE, exactly what i have been sayin. I really dont even think we will see gingerbread, and if we do that will most likley be it for this failure of a phone. If it wasnt for custom roms and all the hard work around here i would have taken my epic back to the ****ing sprint store and threw it at the lying rep that sold it to me.
Same here. This phone has so Mich.potential that it will never see. Yeah the developers here are amazing but it would help them.out so.much.if Samsung gave.more support. If it wasn't for our developers I wouldn't have this phone right now.

I first used Bonsai 3.0 and restored everything using Titanium Backup and had FC's and data problems.
I Odined back to Stock EB13 Extended and then reflashed Bonsai 3.0.1 and DID NOT restore via TB rather just installed everything I needed from the Market and synced all my contacts back, and Bingo. Everything is flawless... I mean flawless. I have not had ONE FC or data problems. I even got Wifi Tether 3.0 Pre-11 working great! (Haven't used it long enough to see if it crashes, only two days so far with spans of 2 hours at a time)
I think thats what's causing many problems with current flash junkies; they flash so much that they rely on backups like TB or even NANDROID backup that sometimes all they need is a fresh install of EVERYTHING.
I hope this helps
This phone was decent out of the box, but no huge improvement over many of the other android phones... But after Midnight and Bonsai and Syndicate roms, it's many times better than any stock phone out there! Granted, the same is true for most of the top phones once given their own custom roms... but I bought this one. And my only regret is that I can't take half that money back and give it to K0nane and the others for doing Sprint and Samsung's work for them!
EC05 was actually great (if you were lucky to catch it the week it was released, if not, it is on this forum somewhere.) The only reason I rooted was to delete some apps, to overclock, and to try out 2.3.3. I can't wait until CM7 is done. I currently use Red Beast with the new Genocide kernel. I have overclocked it to 1.12 Ghz and undervolted it to 1200 mV (the amount of energy used at the stock 800 mhz. It is extremely fast and saves me tons of battery. So if you are done messing around with sprint, start making your phone your own.

Turns out E4GT weren't being ignored!

Makes me happy that our phones are getting some love.
Are we the first Galaxy S2 version to get some official ICS usable leaks? I've seen some videos, but they don't seem to be up to par with what have been getting.
Thanks Sprint! Thanks Samsung!
yep, maybe thats why we never got a leak before, cus they didnt want to give us a version with a lot of bugs like many other have...
Seems like they have a long way to go after viewing QBking's video review. At least they are working on a build to push out. I hope the final result is completely different.

I gotta agree. I've been running fb17 since yesterday and it's smooth as can be. I don't have the recovery installed on it cause from what I can see so far, there really isn't much of a need...
I'm honestly surprised that Sprints version is getting this nuch attention. My cousin who has the sgsii on at& t still has the soundpool bug, so some apps randomly close on him. On our device, it's been fixed sice el13.

I'm running the FB17 as a daily driver without sacrificing anything but recovery. Everything for me works. I even used the GPS to navigate to a new restaurant 2 hours away today. I streamed the Knicks game yesterday on 4g since I was forced to go to someone's wedding(Rude I know but my Linsanity is crazy). They held it at their restaurant which has no WIFI. Stock UI is smooth and doesn't overheat my phone at all. I'm not talking about TW either. USB mass storage works for me with no problems. I don't know why anyone would not be on ICS right now. It's been real good to me with no problem at all.

Hopefully sprint has realized they make money keeping people happy (and on their network), not by withholding updates to sell phones. But the cynical person in me thinks they are just trying to clear inventory before the lte . They obviously can't release a Wimax phone right now and lte isn't ready.

Hello, Epic 4G Touch on its way

It should be here Tuesday. Been doing some homework, however, some quick Q's for you pros.
I'm coming from an HTC Evo4G and Evo3D, so Odin is somewhat unfamiliar...
What is the "best" root method?
Is most everything on the Epic similar to that of the Fascinate? I've rooted and flashed MIUI on one of those...
Anything I need to avoid like the plague????
Thanks!!!!

Touch recovery unless u like pretty bricks lol, i came from og evo and used oneclick odin and auto root to root my et4g only took about 10mins search the dev thread for them they were buried a little ways down when i rooted on friday and i had to read for a cpl hours to familiarize my self with all the new terms and the real differnces in the setup of this phone vs the evo but i previously owned a samsung intercept which was similar in setup so a refresher was all i really needed and familiarizing myself with the updated methods (odin vs swupdater) etc

Using Touch Recovery on my Evo4G, LOVE IT!
Thanks for the heads up on the auto root method, sounds up my alley coming from revolutionary and unr3voked.

No problem.
There are definitely great Developers on this phone.
My personal favorite ROM is by Rujelus22, he also just released a Beta Kernel with Touch Recovery.
Good Luck!
the "Touch Recovery" as long as you use one that is baked into a kernel is fine (ie rogue Hitman Kernel) Part of the issue at least with everything I've been reading is that when people use the "TEMP" touch (from say the clockwork app in market that allow a "temporary" touch recovery to be put in place) is when a lot of people have had issues. I use the Hitman repack and I've yet to experience any issues with it ever.
As for rooting the phone I do it the tried and true way always with Odin. I kept a Stock EG30 (what this phone came with at launch) Odin restore on my computer with sfhub's auto root. It takes a few longer to do a root process (I do believe that sf made a EG30 auto root that comes in Odin form Odin that and you have root with busybox and superuser)
Like I said I just go about it differently. That's how I root my friends phones and they don't mind the few extra minutes or so that it takes cause once it's done they have a phone always in 100% working order and ready to go.
Touch recovery bricks when you try to come back to GB from ics through cwm.

I'd love a link if you have any handy.
Odin did seem pretty simple when I've used it before. What is this I keep reading about a flash count? Is there a limited time you can flash roms?

there is a counter in the bootloader. After a non standard ROM is flashed, the counter is triggered and you get the "triangle of shame" that let's service people know you've flashed a ROM on your phone / voided your warranty. A USB jig can reset the triangle and the counter. you can get 'em on Amazon, Ebay, or you can make a jug for next to nothing...
Good luck and welcome to the fold! You're gonna love it!
P.S. I'm a firm proponent of the 4.0 Blazer ROM. Buttery smooth fast and great battery life... (FB15 modem)

Oh, THAT'S ALL? Lol... I was thinking it was something different.
It should be here in a matter of 12-16 hours... Freaking stoked. Thanks for the Rom recommendation! Looking to try a few off of the bat. MIUI has always been one of my faves, but 4.0 Blazer will be flashed too!
I came from the evo too this phone was a little confusing at first but a little reading and it makes sense real quick ive settled on team nocturnals dark ics blend rom with stock kernel and fb21 modem and im getting about 6-8hrs screen on time
Edit: im at 10hrs 36mins on battery 8hrs 46mins screen on been trying to see how long it would last me with heavy use today been browsing xda most of the time and my display is 83% battery use cuz i have my brightness at about 80%
Edit 2: i forgot to mention im at 46% battery left on stock 1800 battery as well with that usage rediculous compared to my evo that was 3500 battery times for me my 1800 in my evo would be dead at 8 hrs screen on

I'm gonna throw this out there and hopefully prevent some bad things, I am a lurker who reads a TON. I am gonna strongly caution you against using touch recovery. Far too many phones have been getting bricked lately. Also, don't pay too much attention to modems or odin at first, eventually you'll get curious and go for it, but it's not really necessary for most things. If you are gonna go for odin, I'd suggest buying the mobile odin app from the market. Very handy app.
But be warned, stay away from touch recovery for now. Wait for the kinks to be ironed out.

look up qbking77 on youtube, he has great videos for this phone including the 1-click method to root this phone. Also, I believe buying a jigg will reset the counter on odin
