Hi Guys, I have just recently been introduced to the android world by getting a HTC Desire HD, Now i love the phone, no complaints except for the fact that my phone slows down alot, now i have android version 2.2.1 (i have no idea what the software is called, but i think they call it froyo, excuse me as im in the process of learning). i am using GoLauncher EX as i dont really like the standard one and the majority of my apps are all installed to the sd card. Now my phone is a T-mobile phone and every time i restart my phone i have the T-Mobile logo appearing which i want to get rid of and the boot up process of the phone takes a few minutes, I thought the HTC Desire hd was supposed to have a fast boot up? or is it because i have so many apps installed it slows down the boot up process? or could it be that the rom that is installed on my phone is a t-mobile rom which slows down the phone?
I do apologise to anybody that finds my questions annoying, I am new to android so please bear with me as i am still trying to get my head round everything.
All i want is for my phone to be responsive when i want it to be responsive without it freezing due to what ever reason (which i dont know and i am trying to figure out) and have as my apps as i want installed on my phone without having to worry about Ram usage. would i need to download a standard manufacturers Rom??
I also keep hearing the term "root" without actually knowing what it would do in more detail. From what i know i understand that you would have superuser access, but what can i do with this access? and what would be the simplest and safest way to root?
any help would be greatly appreciated, Thanks.
I presume that you're currently using the stock ROM(the original OS) held by HTC since you do not know what/how to root your device. Did you turn on USB Debugging? Go to Setting >> Application >> Development >> USB Debugging. Check the USB Debugging and see there is any result.
Rooting your phone you can try using Visionary app to root your Desire HD. I tried using it and it works. But make sure your build number is not or higher than 1.7xxxxxx. Check it at Setting >> About Phone >> Software Information. If higher you will need to downgrade it.
You can download apk file here: http://android.modaco.com/content/software/320350/19-nov-r14-visionary-one-click-root/ by paulobrien. The app has been removed from the Market.
Before rooting, do some homework. You must know the risk of rooting your device.
Cheers. =)
my dhd is fairly new as well but i've never had any performance issues. before i rooted, i was running the stock rom with over 70 apps without any lag or slowdowns. i'm wondering if the issue with your phone is hardware related, in which case i'm not sure if rooting will help.
there's a massive amount of info in the forums on how to extend battery life. read up on those because it will help with performance as well. i hope this helps.
Firstly welcome to the forum.
I'm guessing that your on software number 1.7... since you have android 2.2.1. I was having slowdowns even with USB debugging check on. I just ended up rooting my phone and installing a custom rom. See if the USB debugging is checked and see if it makes a difference.
Rooting basically means that you can run apps which need superuser permissions, it's kind of like 'jailbreaking' on an iphone if you use the term loosely. As stated in previous post, if your running software number 1.7... or higher you'll need to downgrade first before you can run the root.
In order to install custom roms you need to do an extra step which is know as 'S-OFF' and then you can flash a recovery image. This might sound confusing. Take a look at this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=936214
It explains everything. Also make sure to check out the development section of the Desire HD forum, where you'll find a whole new world, and really unlock the potential of your phone!
Try downloading JuiceDefender and AdvancedTaskKiller from the market and have them running on aggressive profiles.
They are designed to extend battery life, but they kill applications running in the background (as Android doesn't close most applications when you exit them, just sleeps them). You may notice that this improves performance. They will also show you how much free memory you have on your phone, as this being low will probably be the cause of the slowdown.

No. Just no. Do NOT use taskkillers... that's the reason why most phones slow down after some time. Please understand how android works before recommend someone a taskkiller...
There are enough discussions about taskkillers here on XDA, so search for them and you will see that nearly no one will recommend them.

I'm aware of how Android works, but for applications that update/sync and use more memory (Twitter/Facebook) the Android system doesn't close it off. This is where I use task killers.
I have also, despite other peoples insistence it doesn't (placebo effect blah blah..), noted a marked difference in both performance and battery life when using such tools. especially if I've been using the phone for many apps in a short space of time, killing them in bulk before launching another makes a huge difference, and Android only kills them after a period of inactivity.
Thank all of you guys for the reply!
It is very much appreciated as i am new to this forum and the android world, and boy can it get confusing! lol. but i do feel as though i am learning slowly but surely! now just to give you guys a little more info about my phone if it helps and please help me out here aswell....
Android version = 2.2.1 (im asuming this is called froyo)
Baseband version = 12.28e.60.140fu_26.04.02.17_m2 ( i have no idea what this means)
Kernal Version =2.6.32.21-g1e30168 [email protected] #1 fri dec 10 18:43:12 cst 2010 (im assuming this is when my software was last updated)
Build Number = 1.75.111.2 CL301245 release keys
Software Number = 1.75.111.2 ( from what i have gathered is that i can not root this software and i have to downgrade to 1.72 and below? please correct me if i am wrong)
Browser Version = 3.1
My network provider is o2 but my handset is a t-mobile handset, now what i dont understand is, they say that the htc desire hd is supposed to have a really fast boot up but when i boot up my phone the t-mobile sign appears and it stays on the screen for about a minute.
Now i have been reading up on this forum but i guess "you can never read enough" as there's always new threads being added all the time. but what i would like to do is remove any network provided software and completely and make my phone as stable as possible and then i would like to root it to be able to have superuser access. So would that mean that i would have to install a custom rom?? and can i install a custom rom via an app? or would i have to do it via my laptop?
and can somebody quickly run over what the Hbootloader is?
what does s-off mean?
what is the radio or what does it do? and what is Nand?
sorry for any of you guys that think my questions are silly or stupid, but just trying to clear up any confusion
Thank you to all of you guys that have previously replyed and thank u in advance for those of you that are about to reply!
Payback time for me.
I got an old desire z because my phone is UPS travelling in warranty and I'm waiting a replacement.
This phone got me mad. Really. I was running on a stable CM10.1 nothing installed except for WhatsApp and Chrome, and everything was DAMN slow, i got messages "The application stopped running, wanna close it?" for every click made on the touch, even from phone or system apps.
So I got here, and I noticed this "USB Debugging should be on" trick, but the situation got better, still unacceptable.
This phone got a snapdragon 800mhz and I noticed, in the performance tab under settings, it got a Max CPU limit 1024Mhz.
So I changed this parameters:
- Max CPU frequency @806Mhz
- Governor set to INTERACTIVE
- I/O scheduler to NOOP
- Kernel page fusion (KSM) -> ENABLED
I set all to "set this parameters on reboot" and rebooted the phone. Yes. Because now it can be called "phone" again.
No more issues from apps, and the device got finally responsive to all the user requests. I didn't tried multitasking yet, but it is finally usable.
I know this is a Desire HD thread, but maybe the info could help someone around....

Presuming it's possible. I've not come across anything I've not been able to do so far.
Also, is there any cases of anyone bricking their Desire doing this? I've never rooted a phone before.
Thanks
No one has done it so...none, no, and no.
Im pretty new to all this myself, but......
at the moment you cannot root the desire, so i doubt anyone has bricked the desire trying.
some of the advantages of rooting the desire are that it will allow people to design custom roms that will be tweaked for better performance or longer battery life or what ever they want, it will also allow apps to be installed on the SD card there for you will not be limited on the size of the rom on the phone. Also i believe it can allow people in countries that dont have access to paid apps the change to access them.
Like i say im quite new to android and this is what i've picked up while having a read.
http : // twitter.com/ paulobrien (minus the spaces created) is your one stop for news about the rooting in progress!!!
When you can Root you have access to system files, which means their will be potential fixes for low volume, and you can also choose the speed that you run your CPU.
Also Rooting enables you to run unsigned ROM's which means you can install. say a custom Nexus Rom on the Desire There is plenty of fun to be had by Rooting your phone))))))))
JD
Great am following that twitter account now, fingers crossed the device gets rooted before the next version comes out
Thanks guys. That's some pretty fun stuff. Better battery life would be good (without removing Sense UI, which is ace). I've no problem with the volume.
That fact you cannot install apps on to the SD card is also just nuts. Most apps are small but those language apps (i.e - Learn Spanish etc...) can be 10Mb+
Hi, I have a Verzion TP2 and finally took the plunge to do the VZW WM6.5 upgrade.
Bad decision! I'm experiencing really slow performance and reduced battery life.
I like some of the new features, but the slow performance is not acceptable.
Anyone have any good advice for speeding things up? I know disabling sense UI will help, but then it would just be another crappy WM UI phone.
I did some searching here and wasn't able to find much. (Admittedly I didn't spent tons of time looking.)
Help is greatly appreciated! TIA!
Just put a custom rom on your phone and most of your problems are solved. And believe me, you never want to go back to stock.
THanks for the info. Not certain that I want to go away from stock because my carrier (Verizon) may get quite cranky & not want to support me or service my phone if something goes wrong.
I have an unbranded European version of the phone on the UK Vodafone network, so I'm not sure how much help I can be. But I thought I would offer some advice based on my own experiences.
Firstly I assume the version of WM6.5 you upgraded to is the Sense 2.1 version and not Sense 2.5? I remember when I first upgraded I immediately noticed a big slowdown in comparison to the WM6.1 version which flew. If it's any help, you'll soon learn to live with the slowdown and eventually it will become "normal" and it's only when you downgrade you'll realise the difference.
In terms of speeding up the device there is not much you can do, apart from reduce the ram usage. There are a couple of cabs which significantly lower the ram usage.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=532948
Secondly you might want to install an app called "memmaid" or "sktools" and disable certain processes and apps from starting up. Admittedly I don't really know what most of these processes do, but I've generally found these ones are ok to disable:
certenroll
notificationmanager
htcsipsrvc
gpsprivacy
softwaredisable
htcservices
dtpt
sqmupload
btagsvc
ssw
ussd
htcap
The same goes for startup applications where I have found these are ok to disable. (ignore the apps that are not installed on your device)
poutlook
speedbmonitor
delwmptempfolder
htcstartup
pkg
spbmobileshell (I have a switcher between this and Sense interface so dont need it on startup)
memmaidtweaks
superstarter.exe
Also, I remember seeing certain apps u can download from here that strip certain branded roms of all the bloatware. As my Touch Pro 2 is not branded, I've never used one and don't have any knowledge on them. But I'm sure someone on here will gladly point you in the right direction for a Verizon one. (If it indeed exists)
You might also want to install "advancedconfig" where you can tweak certain things in your phone to speed it up a bit.
I realise you don't want to go down the custom rom route, but unfortunately it may the only way to achieve what you want. I've now customised my official WM6.5 Sense 2.1 rom to how I want it (whilst waiting for my upgrade so I can switch to something like the HTC Desire on Android) and therefore don't use a custom rom, but I've tested the vast majority of the custom roms and I'm sure you'll find something you like. In your case, I'd suggest a hybrid of WM6.1 with the Sense 2.5 interface. If you can get your head around the lack of smooth scrolling in certain apps and what-not, you'll find a nice balance of speed and a very pretty sense 2.5 interface. (I personally couldn't get my head around it haha!)
I'd very much like to use a custom rom as I quite like Sense 2.5, but there was always a problem with the text message app. Be it the very slow "HTC Messaging" or the problem with the unread count after disabling it. I haven't tried a custom rom in a few months now so I'm not sure if this has been resolved. If so, can someone please let me know as I can't keep hard resetting my phone to test.
Anywayz good luck, and I hope this helped a bit. I don't come on this site too often but I will bookmark this page and try and remember to check it so if you have any questions, feel free to ask.
Thanks fade to black for your well laid out response.
I am also waiting to upgrade to the Desire next month but I am not sure I want to get rid of my Touch pro 2. I am so used to the hardware keyboard plus even though I would have had the phone for 1 year by 30 July, it looks brand new. Carrying 2 smartphones about is not an option for me. I have also just had the screen replaced under warranty after it developed newton rings. HTC returned the phone with the latest WM6.5 i.e. with Sense 2.5 and it seems very smooth. No crashes or nothing since I have had it back about a week now.
You're very lucky then as I still have a year left on my contract :-( Lol..
Yeah losing the hardware keyboard is a bit worrying, but i've not had the HTC Wizard, then the Kaiser, and then the Touch Pro 2. So to be honest I'm quite looking forward to a "thin" device for once. Hopefully will be able to get used to the onscreen keyboard.
You could always try waiting a few more months until HTC release an android device with a keyboard? Tbh it's quite surprising how they haven't already.
@Fade2Black101 Thanks for the suggestions! I have begun looking at things and immediately went for disabling the push internet because my memory is a bit tight. Well, instead of installing the CAB file I went in to manually edit the registry and found that it was not enabled in my ROM. :-(
I'm going to try some of the other stuf you suggested, but have not had time as of yet.
I probably shouldn't be, but I am shocked that Verizon released an update that brings the phone to it's knees in terms of performance.
was there a noticable difference in ram usage after editing the push setting? I remember when I tried doing it manually and it didnt have the same effect as installing the cab. So unless you noticed a big change, i'd suggest using the cab.
I don't have Verizon, but, if the rom's out there for Verizon are like the GSM ones, you can probably download the "stock" Verizon Rom, in case you need warranty service. Just flash back to the stock version before returning it.
Of course, if you phone is unbootable, then, you're pretty much screwed

I checked the registry and the settings weren't even there except for one and it was set to disabled. Also when I check the task manager under processes, opera isn't there. So I'm pretty sure that push internet is not running on my phone.
well ive rooted my prev phone n caused it to brick n i cant think of any reasons to root dhd
app2sd - 2.2 already have them
roms - same as any app launcher in market(?)
getting 2.3 etc ealier - id rather wait fr official since i like htc sense anyway.
higher cpu - the phone is way fast enough for me... the 2.2.1 update improved the lag by alot.. i did not get any lag since update.
access to apps like screencast - maybe
removing apps that cannot be removed - i dont want to remove em
improved camera etc in roms - yet again 2.2.1 basically fixed every problem on this phone like low volume, bad camera, lag etc

I recently also moved from HD2 to Desire HD and also don't see the reason for rooting.
I messed around with HD2 because I didn't like WM and I wanted Android.
Now that I have Android as a native OS I also really don't see the need for rooting. I belive that official updates are always way better than the unofficial ones (this ment with all due respect to all of the chefs out there that are trying their best) because unofficial ones have testing cycle that are way smaller and so new versions with fixes tend to come out at least once in a couple of days.
Maybe I'm not seeing the whole picture. If you think I'm also wrong, please say so.
If you're happy with your phone now then by all means leave it as it is. But as long as you follow instructions to the word, you're not going to brick your device.

I would have to say that the ROMs I have used (ARHD many versions and CM7 Rc1) that the testing cycle might be smaller but support is generally a lot better than with the official updates.
But in answer to your question is Rooting worth it, well that all depends on what you want from your phone tbh. If you want a customised ROM or the ability to move ALL apps in their entirety to your SD (this is a root only feature) a heavily improved battery life (in some circles) or stock android experience etc, then yea Root that bad boy and enjoy.
If however you are a standard user then it really is not worth it. I rooted mine as i wanted to eek out some extra battery and performance. It was worth it.
I'm new to rooting & flashing roms this week, had my dhd since oct last year & kept it legit until now.
Everything's gone fine for me - downgraded from official ota 2.2.1 (1.72.xxx.x) to 2.2 (1.32.xxx.x - PD98IMG.zip file) so i could root (didn't need goldcard, phone unlocked & unbranded from new)
I got a RUU just in case though.
Did the s-off & radio off thing (couldn't be any easier), put revolution rom on first, but didn't think much of it, so now i'm on CM7... loving it, but it's early days.
Still got to work out how to get the market back (google apps file needed i think).
Originally rooted so i could get my bluetooth keyboard working with my dhd, revolution made no difference, CM7 is looking promising.

Hi!
Is root worth it?
Well. I can only speak for my self of course. Where I live, Google has not yet opened up for paid apps. It is possible to circumvent but, for me, the easiest solution requires root.
If I want to clarify a problem or a solution, e.g. at xda, it is nice to be able to add a screen dump. This is possible through Android SDK, but i haven't, as of yet, figured out how to do this. Anyway you need to be hooked up to a computer to do this which kind of negates the idea of posting from the phone. There's an app to do this as well but again, this requires root.
Living in a small arctic town the weather app hasn't got my location in the database. It is possible and quite easy to remedy this issue but - u guessed it - requires root.
I guess it comes down to personal preferences which, at least for me, has got a lot to do with where I live.
Can you get by without root? Good for you, best of luck etc.
I can't.
Regards Elo.

Like it was pointed out, the main advantage are the custom ROMs or kernels. The apache 13 kernels have great performance.
If you don't plan on using them root isn't that needed though. On the other hand rooting is almost risk free with the new one click tools.
If you have to ask. Then no.
Personally, I'm not much for sense and I love to play around with different Roms, kernels, overclocking and all that.
I can only think of one thing worth rooting for if you're not going to flash, overclock and so on. And that is the fact one can remove those bloody ads with Adfree.

Bottom Point: HUGE BATTERY LIFE IMPROVEMENT!!
You decide.
im in a urban area so i dont need root to unlock app market and hidden apps and paid apps.. im have 16 hrs a day n my phone is usually connected to the pc... so charging is not a problem fr me... n 2.2.1 did improve the battery by alot... i did nt touch the phone fr 7 hours and the battery only went down by 2%

Hi,
[edit]
Skip to the last post to go into above topic. This part is outdated

I'm totally new to android and even to embedded systems and new to this forum. There are plenty information about everything, but there are no simple answers for my needs.
First of all, I'm quite happy as a linux developer to have android system. I've imagined it quite different (NDK is without GUI api, only SDK is good for application development and this means Java, not C++, rooting without exchanging flash and so on), but I'm still happy after using Symbian and WM6. The only two things I would like to do with the phone right now are:
1. 2 way call recording
2. permroot
But why I'm posting this...
Ad 1. Only easy solution I've seen for two way call recording is to flash everything with LeeDroid for example. There are big disadvantages - no further updates of the system (android 2.3), some reports that LeeDroid isn't perfect (I don't know that those rumours are true, but I've seen speed complains and some strange behaviors) and so on.
Ad 2. Here I would like to ask that AMT is a good way to do it (I mean "automagically") with below device description:
Device Model: Desire HD
Bootloader Version: 0.85.0007 SHIP HBOOT
Radio Version: 26.03.02.26_M
ROM Version: 1.32.405.6
Android Version: 2.2
CID: HTC__032
and secondly - why should I bother about S-OFF (what is this exactly? I dodn't get it right after reading about flashing), what is HBOOT, how exactly booting works, I mean... not for noob, more clearer for adv. linux user.
Best thing to achieve for me would be rooting (with r/w on the system mount) and a driver for two way recording without messing with the rest of supplied system/kernel/roms/etc... Or alternatively - can any of you convince me that LeeDroid or other "flashing package" is better than nandroid and won't beak anything in my phone?
I'm sorry for (as I suppose) another doubtful/stupid post, but I really need to know what all this means for the phone before doing anything smart/stupid, and the thousands of posts around are not very helpful yet (few days of reading).
I had the same problem, well almost I didn't think about any specific advantages of rooting my DHD and flashing custom ROM, I was just affraid that I might break sth. Seriously, LeeDroid is an awesome ROM, I use it on a daily basis with no problems. For now everything has been working way better than on standard stock ROM. If you need convincing than, let me tell you this. With LeeDroid you get all the stuff you have on stock ROM + many many many more and the OS doesn't lag like the standard one does, you get Rosie, HTC Sense 3.0, CPU OC...and the list goes on. If you read enough about rooting and flashing ROMs than belive me, it's easy. Also about updates, these are available through ROM manager which is included in the ROM.

LordMOD's kernel for AOSP allows for two way recording without all the SENSE crap that comes with LeeDroid, if you want a ROM with LordMOD kernel you could do worse than try HydrOG3n MOD

Your /system is currently in read only mode, without S-OFF (Security off) you are unable to change that and thus are unable to make permanent changes to /system, you can make changes but they are cached in RAM thus a reboot reverts them. Achieving S-OFF allows the /system to be written thus changes are permanent
HBOOT is analogous with BIOS on a pc, this controls the security status of your DHD, thus to achieve S-OFF you must replace the HBOOT with one that allows the security to be deactivated, there is a similar system protecting the Radios (there appears to be a backup radio, thus if flashing goes wrong the radio can run off the backup) hence you can also have Radio S-OFF.

I wont recommend LeeDroid, and you need the Kernel modules to allow two way recording so either install cm7 or another AOSP based ROM and then one of LordMOD kernels or HydrOG3n MOD

A good starting thread is this one and don't worry we where all noobs once.
May I ask why exactly wouldn't you recommend LeeDroid? I've been using it for some time now with no problems whatsoever. Unless there is sth about this ROM that I don't know. I'm happy with Sense 3.0 (Rosie), it's smooth, doesn't lag, looks nice unlike some custom launchers.
Ghostofcain, thank you very much for quite a nice introduction. I can only ask the same thing to clarify what's really not nice in LeeDroid as haerigrek mentioned, and one of forgotten thing yesterday:
Can you describe me exactly how it works and if it's possible to completely backup whole hboot, radio and system to be _sure_ I can reverse all changes at any time assuming I won't brick the phone? (I think it will be something about clockwork, but I'm still confused)
And maybe anyone can post me most terrible or most often done brick reasons... to be more aware and maybe to be sure it's... safe if done right.
And in the meantime I will read all the links supplied here, so be sure any further posting will be read by me and is needed, but it will take some time before I speak again (busy week/weekend/next week but still, I plan to know something next weekend).

Problem with LeeDroid, in one word SENSE! If i wanted bling that slowed my phone down I'd have bought an iPhone, seriously a decent AOSP based ROM comes in at 70-80mb LeeDroid (and other SENSE polluted ROMS) 230-260mb and most of that is bloat I don't want. If you like SENSE and use all it's features by all means give it a whirl, but if you don't go for something a little lighter.
Depending on what ROM your currently running (OUK, Vodafone etc) your best bet if anything went wrong would be to restore with the appropriate RUU, which will put your phone back to Stock i.e Hboot, radio etc. Bricking the phone is actually very hard , even intentionally and until you've flashed the HBoot is prevented by S-OFF, when you have S-OFF be sure to carry out a NANDROID backup (which takes a system snapshot which can subsequently be restored reverting all changes you have made since) before you flash anything which will allow you to revert to your stock rooted ROM. In the main have fun
I agree with ghostofcain 125%.
Paradoxxx's 1.3.1 Benchmark Edition weighs in at an amazing 53MB. I have larger audio files. And yet it still does everything I need- Phone, email, sms, web & XDA.
So what you guys say is that it's a choice between a SENSE/NON-SENSE ROM. I mean seriously, I like SENSE, it does e'thing I need and more, and it looks nice, and I can't say anything bad about LeeDroid ROMs apart from the 3.1.7 Kernel which didn't have 2way call recording.

if your a fan of SENSE stick with LeeDroid and you wont be disappointed, but if you regard SENSE as a disease to be eradicated look elsewhere.
Ok, now big picture looks more clear, but one thing to ask yet - where to find a page/thread that compares functionalities of some (most decent) mods if I decide to say good bye to HTC Sense...? I think it is crucial to have a good mail client, move/sound player, calendar, messaging, dialer, sliding gui, home screen with widgets (or something at least like start screen in WM - capable of informing, having status icons/bars etc.) or maybe even alarm clock ;-P :-D. I don't know what's inside Sense and what's outside (or what's possible to install free(ly) in android without Sense) and wikipedia says that all major apps are in it which I pointed out above.
There should be free conferences with possiblity of touching mods by yourself in person ;-D
From my experiences with Touch HD - yep, TouchFLO was slow, but it was also somehow better than bare WM. I used phone without, but at last, I turned it back on just because of missing convenient way to use all of the phone features. I hope not to flash a phone with something not convenient, coz flashing will scare **** out of me (no matter of a knowledge while doing), and I would prefer this situation happened only once :-D
PS. I hope that saying "sense" by you had nothing to do with proximity sensing? (or other sensors ;-) )... noob... noob... noob... :-D

If you flash a decent AOSP based ROM, the only functionality that you will lose is internet pass through (that is the ability to use your pc as a modem for your phone to connect to the internet) and the sense.com features but my experience and comments from others lead me to believe that sense.com is still very flaky. All other features are working as in the standard rom, granted SENSE widgets are not available but AFAIK they are all replicated by others, mainly, freely available on the market. All the examples you quote are still filled with the standard google apps, if there is any app / widget you need a definitive answer on PM me and I will have a look.
i don't know why I believe you just like that, but it's the fact ;-P :-D
Ok, to be completely sure, the interface (mean sliding, widgets and so on) is not HTC created or not part of a Sense UI? I'm digging this because on WM phone the "manila.exe" was the whole UI, not just a part of it and only way to speedup anything was to block it permanently. As far as I understood you till now, this is not the case of android UI, removing Sense will have no visible consequences as you suggests, right?
And I will ask again, anyone have a clue where can I go to see those roms in action? Pictures/videos/dunno... anything
Many thanks to you Ghostofcain

Not quite, stopping SENSE will stop the SENSE widgets from functioning but a quick look in the market will let you find widgets that replicate the SENSE widgets function, and also there are many android widgets built in that do not rely on sense.

Now you're my hero :-D. I'm still burried under applications (tons of it, just found VNC server which is a must for a almost-blind man as me ;-) ), but since this is almost enough what I already have, next step will be reading alot and watching alot as I see above. And those widgets are not important. Some may be even quite good, but still - the applications are what matters, even if I had only app links it would be enough with some of them, and with those more important I bet there are many substitutes maybe even better.
You're my local hero now . I hope I will have a chance to get even some day :-D
PS. Yup! I've even found "thanks" button! ;-D
No worries mate just trying to help a fellow user out, actually I was quite shocked at the lack of info on the videos that I could find on XDA, oh well that's sorted anyhow
Had leedroid earlier on my desire, but went for a aosp rom and i dont regret, its so much better.
Cyanogenmod is a very popular rom.

Hmm, its bad. After watching those movies, I think, I really like Sense. I'm not a speed freak definitely, but I like to have nice interface with as low power consumption as possible, but not at the sake of convenience. I've not decided yet, but as far as I watched it seems that Non-Sense ( ;-) ) mods has not quite mature GUIs... I have to google more videos, but not right now.
There's a thread which points out how to save power in which the author says to install CurrentWidget to see current output and he guarantees that this CurrentWidget does not drain the energy. In the same post he claims that Sense drains much if you don't remove your HTC account. It's funny coz I still have this account (only disabled sync, but with sync enabled it's not much a difference) and checked what he said. The results were VERY funny. Sense drains less than CurrentWidget, and CurrentWidget drains MUCH more than Cellphone in a standby! :-D I think I won't listen to this thread. Am I only person who noticed such a behaviour? (just to recall everyone - still on froyo, decided not to upgrade until permroot)
I need to have an info how to _really_ discover my actual froyo before I do a mod to have real data to compare gains and loss. As far as I see even here, most of the opinions are rather not authoritative I think (coz I can proove that my phone does not match).
Anyone has the idea about really good software package (I mean few really tested applications) to log system activity, power consumption, network activity and so on? I would be really happy to know anything _for_sure_. Best would be all in one app to save cpu processing while logging things.
Anyone had issues with Google Earth resetting phone? 8-O i was shocked, reset occured to me once but as far as I remember, i did that time much suspicius things, but yesterday, Google Earth reset my phone just like that (not much apps in background, only "strange" thing was that battery had 15% which is a limit to shout on me to connect charger, but whole system was fresh and steady).
Ok, I've decided that this weekend will be the last of the original unstable software. Some apps can reset the phone, so I hope that LeeDroid will help. Why LeeDroid? I just like the way of Sense, but I will not prefer it. If LeeDroid will not be enough, I will try best without Sense, but not without tests of Gingerbread and new Sense.
The results will be described here (I mean results of flashing), and then some time will pass to evaluate and then I'll be happy or I'll be describing a new try ;-). So, wish me luck this weekend ;-P :-D

Done. Radio S-OFF, Eng S-OFF, SuperCID, ClockworkMod. Ready to flash LeeDroid HD to check if it's what I want.
If anyone knows that there is better mod incorporating Sense 3 in more elegant, original or so, way then I would be happy to hear about it. I'm considering checking Android Revolution HD too, but I don't know that I will have time for this... (setting up everything again is a pain...), so I need opinions. Any opinions. And don't tell me that it is a matter of preferences - just strict facts like "AR has this, LD hasn't" - I can judge by myself that it's a feature or a bug ;-).
But I'm already grateful to all people that helped me to understand what I just did to my phone. Thank you all .
[edit]
Now I know, maybe it's good for other noobs, so I will say loudly what I've read or heard and is hard to find here in one place... (correct me if I'm wrong)
* Eng S-OFF is not necessary for all. It just enables USB flashing as far as I know comparing to Radio S-OFF (but both enables flashing roms).
* Radio flashing has nothing to do with call recording (if I was told correctly), it's just an upgrade for hardware, can improve few things like power consumption or range.
I still do not know how permroot was achieved (I just ran Visionary+ - it "rages" the cache - exploit, but I do not know how it achieves permroot in contrast to temproot - probably it has something to do with mounting /system r/w and changing 'something', but I'm not sure - just deducing).

Hi again in this newbie thread. I'm not a newbie already, but I still have a problem. And if I'm not wrong, it's a bigger one. I told you already about google earth rebooting my phone. I just noticed AndroidKnight did the same and came here to recall if this was like same situation. Almost. When 3D goes mad, phone reboots...
Now... what I think and why some roms were instable... A hardware issue? Too low voltage because of faulty cpu or something? Anyone can help me diagnose this?
To be continued...
Hi, I am currently using Launcher Pro and Widgetdroid on my HTC Desire HD. I don't think I'll need HTC Sense for now. Is there a way to disable HTC Sense? I have a feeling its taking up lots of battery when its running together with Launcher Pro. Does it actually or I am just bad at battery management. I use juice defender and Android Booster. I might have gotten the settings wrong. Is there any other better suggestions? Please lemme know thanks.
head over the development section, there are tons of ROMs with HTC Sense launcher removed and replaced with launcher pro.
Hey i'm in the same boat as you and using Launcher Pro instead of HTC Sense. I would give your phone a restart after you've made Launcher Pro your default and that way HTC Sense isn't running in the background. I have a Custom Rom installed and generally get about 1 day and 17 hours of battery life, and thats with 3g on, wifi on, surfing the web, gaming. I personally wouldn't use any sort of Task managers seeing as the applications are closed automatically after a certain period of time when not used.
Am i correct in assuming your phone isn't rooted with a custom rom? If it isn't maybe you should consider rooting your DHD. I use to have quite poor battery life prior to rooting. Just about got 10hours out of it.
Try looking up on the net about your ROM tht your running.... I am using the latest LeeDroid ROM on my desire HD & using the recommend kernel & radio, I use to use an overclocking app but not anymore I find with this ROM, kernel, radio & Launcher pro plus I have a better battery life.
Try these tips -
1. Only use Bluetooth, wi-fi, gps, mobile network when you need it
2. Turn auto brightness off, set it as low as possible & only change when needed
3. Flash the recommend kernel & radio for your Rom they will improve your all round usage & battery life of your phone
4. If using a overclocking app don't overclock or underclock too much, this will drain the battery faster!
5. Task killers are not worth using, just keep an eye on what is earring up your battery with a system app & if you find a battery killer app just uninstall it & use a different less draining one
6. Charge your battery to 100% when flashing a new rom, cause some roms delete the battery cailibration.zip file! Just d/load the battery cailibration app from the market charge tour phone to 100%, flash your rom, reboot, charge back to 100%, leave for 10 or 15minutes after at a 100%, thn let your phone drain to 0 thn recharge to 100% your phone should now know the correct battery cailibration & you should notice the difference in battery life
Hope this improves your battery

From a full charge I get a battery drain while sleeping of about 1-3% drain & thts on about 5-7hrs, then my phone goes for about 10+ hrs with some mobile data usage for checking Facebook, Twiter, Xda & Tapatalk. With plenty of txt messaging & a few short calls here & there! My phone is running LeeDroids latest custom rom, kernel & radio. Much better & faster than when I was unrooted & using the orig HTC sense rom!

Hi, which section can I find the contents to root my phone. You are right my phone isn't rooted. I was planning to root and install HTC Sense 3.0 rom and then run it under Launcher Pro. Do you reckon its a good idea?
It seems to me that everyone in here has rooted their phone and is using LeeDroid rom. Where can I find it ? Thanks
Rooting has been made pretty easy these days. I did it on my first try. Also just as a warning there is always a slight chance you might brick your phone so make sure you read up on everything before you try any of it. I personally spent a couple of hours reading up before i tried it.
Once your rooted you can choose from a variety of Custom Roms for example Leedroid, Android HD, RCMIX etc all of which provide excellent battery life and differnt features. So it's up to you to pick which one you like. I personally chose Leedroids Rom.
This post will tell you how to root: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=841076&highlight=how+to+root
You might have an upgraded DHD in which case you need to downgrade first so check this link out: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=905003
And this is a link to Leedroids Rom: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1056727
Keep in mind you won't obviously be able to use it until you've rooted up your DHD.
I'm not an expert at this so if anyone else can add to this please feel free to help out our fellow DHD user.
Also this is just to get you to start reading up. I'll start reading up myself to give you a walkthrough.
To start off if you could please give us your Software Info. You do that by menu > settings > about phone (at the bottom) > software info..and just type out whats there please so we can tell you if you need downgrading.
I've just read through it. Seems pretty straightforward and it's the same pages I used when i rooted my DHD. So first downgrade if you need to. then follow up on the first link i posted. and just go through the instructions.
Any problems just post it here.
I will get back to you tomorrow thanks
Hi, if you root your phone you can remove sense by flashing a no-sense script in recovery (if you read the rooting guide you will know what recovery is). The no sense script can be found on the first post in the Android Revolution HD thread in the development section or there is a no-sense++ script in the themes and app section.
NOTE: THIS WILL COMPLETELY REMOVE SENSE. but it can be restored by flashing your Rom again.

Hi, sorry to get back to you so slow. My android version is 2.2.1... What other informations do you need?
solution:
Settings > Applications > Manage Applications > HTC Sense > Clear defaults. Now when I click the home button it will ask me what interface I want to use (the Android default, usually called "Launcher" or "Home", or the HTC Sense).
