Will accepting the latest ota update unroot? - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm an Evo owner and quite familiar with the Evo and how everything works on it. But a while ago I rooted an epic for someone and his phone is now suggesting the latest ota. I really know nothing about the epic.. I know on the Evo accepting an ota may even brick the device... I just don't know the severity or implications of accepting otas on an epic... someone please shed some light on thus for me

Remove root then accept the OTA
i don't believe the OTA will work properly if you are rooted when you accept it.

Hmm.. yeah that's the answer I was expecting... gonna have to provide tech support for dude.. pshh

[Q] Question about OTA update?????

First off I am a noob with the android environment! I was one of the people that used the "leaked" version .3 of froyo 2.2. I was out of town the past week or so and I turned my phone on this morning and it says there is a system update to Android 2.2 and its the .6 version. So my question is should I update my phone? Again I already have the .3 version on my phone.
Any help would be much appreciated!
Since there is no root method for either version yet and this update will fix some known bugs with the .3 release, I don't see how it could hurt. You still won't be able to root as of yet. Sounds like a win.

The only possible catch is if somebody found an exploit for .3 that was fixed in .6, in which case you would have been able to root if you hadn't updated. Unlikely, as most devs are probably looking through the .6 code anyway.
Thanks for the info fellas!

[Q] Will I be able to receive the 2.2 OTA update if I have my phone rooted?

Pretty obvious question. And don't say just put the leaked 2.2 on, I tried that and it failed...several times.
If you have stock recovery, you will get the ota

I just read an article about the moto droid that their rooted phones will receive the ota. So it must be possible, though I don't have details on whether or not our phone will do the same. It also didn't mention if the ota removes root or not.
FWIW I hate Verizon right about now.
Edit: Yeah, what he said. You need the stock recovery is the word on the block. Although no one has actually received an OTA since we've gotten root so I'm not sure what they base information on.

I read the same, that Verizon MAY start pushing OTA to rooted devices. Just rumors from Droid-Life, not sure if it'll turn into anything. Sure would be interesting, since the majority of android users PROBABLY root anyway.

Still haven't received OTA.

I still haven't received the OTA, and I'm not rooted or anything. Is anyone else not received it? Am I doing something wrong?

My only would download when I was on wifi, it stopped with I was in 3g.
Will this un-root me?
I'm coming from an EVO 4G to the Epic 4G Touch. I did the non-Odin root method, does anyone know if this OTA will un-root the Epic?

The update will fail if you're rooted. You have to be stock to update via OTA. Why not manual update + root?

Typically the OTA install fails on a rooted device. Undo root first if you want the update sprint's rolling out.

I used the zerg rush method that's been listed here to root my phone so I can use TitaniumBackup for my work apps (Good/RSA). I tried other ROMs/Kernels but I got horrible LOS unless I was on stock. I haven't tried since EK02 though but will soon.
I applied the patch with root and it applied successfully. I manually downloaded the leaked zip to my desktop, renamed to update.zip, placed on the root of my SDCARD, booted the phone in to download mode and applied the update.
Update applied without issue but my root WAS removed. I re-ran the auto root using that zerg rush method and my root was back. This was last week and so far no issues.
Pick a ROM...there's lots to choose from...Calk's, StrongSteve, Crawrj, Chris41g...(just to name a few) we've got a slew of brilliant dev's who have cooked up some great ones. Make sure you're on an EG30 modem first before a full EK02 update/flash though. Most of us flashed the EG31 when it leaked and were stuck for a bit.

got the update this morning
I got the update this morning, and for the record, I was and remained rooted before and after the update (sfhub ez-root)...Maybe it worked since my system was completely stock, only rooted.

That is correct, if you only ROOTED using the auto root sticky, that will not impede you from successfully installing the EK02 OTA update. If you also installed EG30+CWM, then all you would need to do is install EG30 before accepting the EK02 OTA update.
BTW after the OTA update installed, you would still have Superuser in your app drawer, but the functionality would have been disabled. To re-enable, just run the auto root and choose Option A.
Still haven't gotten the update...on complete stock with no root or anything and EG30
For some reason LoS has gotten really bad the past few days...I guess I only have to wait a few more though so it's not too bad

I got the update this morning (out of no where). Yesterday, I tried putting my phone on airplane mode, turn it off, then pull the battery - nothing. Tried putting phone on airplane mode, pull the battery, then turn airplane mode off - nothing. (This worked for somebody on some ET4G forum out there) Lol, I just think it's ironic!
Just be patient.
Anyone know of a way to disable the update notification?
I don't want it popping up every 10 minutes.

I woke up to the "your update is ready to install message" message. I'm rooted on blazer 1.2, if i want to stay where I'm at, can I just reboot to clear the update? I just don't feel like reinstalling apps and restoring sms.

[Q] Kies question

Hello, I have done nothing to my SGS II epic 4g touch but root it and custom recovery. For some reason I can never get kies to connect to my phone (Ive tried kies and kies mini also kies air) My first question is would just rooting it cause kies not to work? I would like it to work so that when the official ICS update comes out I can upgrade.
I've purposely not tried a custom rom or kernel cause I knew the official update is close and wanted to make it easier on myself. I read on other sites that the euro version of ICS had to be done via kies and not ota. So I would really like to get kies working.
Also since I cant get kies to work I have no way to check if/when ICS is available I'm guessing when it is it will be all over this site? Would that be a correct assumption?
Thanks for any info
You can wait a few hours/days after the official ICS is released and flash a stock rooted version of it, if you take the official update you may be waiting even longer than a few days before you can re-root your device.

Rooting alone would not cause kies to stop working. Kies in general isnt that good and alot of devs seem to take it out of their roms. Idk about the international rom update using kies, but i would assume that when ics is ready for our phones, it will be pushed through an ota. And yes, when ics hits, it is guaranteed to be all over the forums.

Ok that's what I thought. I wont worry about trying to get Kies working then. I'll just keep my eyes out for a official stock but rooted ICS release here.
Thanks guys for the help and information.

That's the best way cuz there's no telling how long you could end up stuck unrooted after taking an ota. With the Evo4g after the GB update ppl were stuck with locked bootloaders and no root for like 2 or 3 months
Even with all the leaks you never know what will be pushed in an ota you can end up with a new bootloader that blocks Odin/current rooting methods or any number of tricky things to try to keep the carriers in control

[Q] What is this AT&T Update that just tried to come on my phone yesterday?

I've looked all over and haven't seen anyone else talking about this.
Yesterday, the AT&T Update Service started trying to automatically start downloading an update. Luckily I had bad connectivity and killed it, because I like to confirm what the update is about before being forced.
I have a rooted S3 running stock ICS ROM at the moment. Does anyone know what this update is? And does anyone know a good thread in this forum for finding out more about issues to be aware of, regarding OTA updates on a rooted phone?
Thanks very much.
Which stock ROM are running rooted? LEMand LG1, will most likely try to update you to LH9. You should be able to keep root using ota root keeper from the market. Just backup your root before ruining the update, then restore root after. If your already on lh9 or the newer LI5, it is possible is an update to 4.1 (not likely, though).

I'm on LH9. I got all excited it might be Jelly Bean, but I figured if that were true the whole internet would be buzzing about it. I can't figure out why no one has mentioned anything about an update... I'm kind of excited and suspicious all at the same time.
Thank you for the advice about keeping root.

Is it possible you have done a wipe or deleted data from AT&T Software Update app?
I have had this cause app to detect eligibility for an update that has already been done.

The best way to find out what got updated is to go to Settings, About Phone and see what version you're on now.
