[Q] Kies question - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

Hello, I have done nothing to my SGS II epic 4g touch but root it and custom recovery. For some reason I can never get kies to connect to my phone (Ive tried kies and kies mini also kies air) My first question is would just rooting it cause kies not to work? I would like it to work so that when the official ICS update comes out I can upgrade.
I've purposely not tried a custom rom or kernel cause I knew the official update is close and wanted to make it easier on myself. I read on other sites that the euro version of ICS had to be done via kies and not ota. So I would really like to get kies working.
Also since I cant get kies to work I have no way to check if/when ICS is available I'm guessing when it is it will be all over this site? Would that be a correct assumption?
Thanks for any info

You can wait a few hours/days after the official ICS is released and flash a stock rooted version of it, if you take the official update you may be waiting even longer than a few days before you can re-root your device.

Rooting alone would not cause kies to stop working. Kies in general isnt that good and alot of devs seem to take it out of their roms. Idk about the international rom update using kies, but i would assume that when ics is ready for our phones, it will be pushed through an ota. And yes, when ics hits, it is guaranteed to be all over the forums.

Ok that's what I thought. I wont worry about trying to get Kies working then. I'll just keep my eyes out for a official stock but rooted ICS release here.
Thanks guys for the help and information.

That's the best way cuz there's no telling how long you could end up stuck unrooted after taking an ota. With the Evo4g after the GB update ppl were stuck with locked bootloaders and no root for like 2 or 3 months
Even with all the leaks you never know what will be pushed in an ota you can end up with a new bootloader that blocks Odin/current rooting methods or any number of tricky things to try to keep the carriers in control

[Q]Whoever updated through Kies or OTA, can you confirm you got a 2.3.5 or 2.3.6?

The leaked ODIN package is 2.3.6. But numerous news said the update is 2.3.5. People have been having doubts whether the ODIN package is "official" or not.
So whoever updated through the "official" channels (Kies, OTA), could you please confirm whether you got a 2.3.5 or 2.3.6?
I updated through Kies.
I updated through odin. Its official as it gets.

I see. So our leaked ODIN package is indeed "official".
I also updates thru kies and have 2.3.6

So now Im wondering if those that got the OTA are on 2.3.5? How could it be possible that there are 2 different updates?
I got it OTA and it's 2.3.6

Kies Update lost Root
Called TMobile and they sent me an update Kies file to install on my PC to have wifi calling enabled. They turned it on at their servers, so I would be enabled, but I told them I was not running stock rom so they sent an update. Installed the update. PC ran and said new firmware upgrade for my phone. It stated Ver 11.12.16.02 during the install.
Anyways, I now have the WiFi calling familiar icon top left notification area, but root is lost. Just want to know if anyone else has the WiFi calling enabled or not without issues. This is or was on Juggernaut 3.7. Can't boot to recovery now. I will wait to hear back from others.
You are brave for tellig them you rooted your phobe. Yes it removes root and gives you stock recovery. Youll have to reroot and install custom recovery again.

Do I really need it?
I just finished setting up my phone just right and now this update comes along. Used titanium BU to freeze device manager to stop the update. I used to have wifi calling on my Nexus 1 but I never used it. Is there any other reason why I shouldn't skip this update?

The new baseband does improve my data speed, before 8- 10 mbps, now 15 - 18 mbps. Home button responses quicker, no more accidentally launch voice search. Overall the ROM is more snappy than before. I still try to see if improve the battery life.

Is there anyway to update without losing root? Can the 2.3.6 ota update still be routed?

Too many users worry they will not have any support if their phones are rooted. I have a rooted Nexus one. It had bad hardware Nand. Bad memory blocks in my system and Data and cache partitions. I sent it back rooted, but with stock ROM stuff, to HTC. HTC RMA's my rooted phone. They have to show cause and effect that rooting did any damage etc. TMobile techs were nice. They were happy to send me the info to grab this stuff manually. And by stating I was rooted, that pushed me up the chain to higher level tech support instead of dealing with robots reading scripts, telling you to reboot your phone, or to try such and such etc.

I actually had 18.2 with Speedtest this morning using Beastmod 4.1, before I ran into my manually upgrading the firmware and losing root. All is fine now with a 5 minute re-root process using Odin and PDA option with CWM. Not a big deal but yes, using those XDA individual files could have save me some grief on this
So depending on how good of a signal you have, and the ROM itself, I did show fantastic PRE-Updateing the firmware. These were consistent 15.5-18.2 reading BTW, here in Downtown Las Vegas this morning. Not just a one time anomaly.
2.3.6 via kies working well.

I want to leave my phone rooted, but I want ICS when it comes out...

So I recently found out I'm unable to install OTA Android updates to my phone if it's rooted.
So what can I do once ICS is released for the GS2? Will there be a download online that I can just flash with ODIN? Or are people going to be forced to unroot if they want the official ICS stock?
Most likely samfirmware aka sammobile will release an odin .tar, so you'll be good to go with odin.

That's not true. You will be unable to install OTA patch-style updates if you have modified one of the files being patched. If you rooted with Auto Root and that's all you did, you will be able to install OTA patch-style updates even without unrooting (though the update will disable root)

I'm sure there will be an ODIN update within a few days or maybe even the same day. You can also flash EK02 and let the OTA update upgrade you (or if you've just rooted with Auto Root, just let the OTA update run), though you are probably better off waiting for an update from XDA, because the updates from here will attempt to keep your rooting and upgrade options as open as possible.
I'll also probably have an OTA compliance check for the next official update so you can tell immediately which files are not in compliance with what the update expects. I have one for EG30 to EK02 as part of the Auto Root package, so it would be similar in functionality.
First rule: Never take an OTA update if you care about rooting.
Any file made available from sprint or samsung will have a rooted/safe version posted in the dev section within a few hours of release.
I know samsung is pretty nice to us rooters but you never know when that might change.

Is there a way to block OTAs? I'm running Calkulin's 2.8 if that matters.

There is a thread on blocking them in the wiki, provided here for your ease.

If you are worried about the OTA messing something up, it'll download and ask to install, but if you've made any changes to your ROM, including installing CWM, then it will fail the integrity check and won't install, so nothing will change.
I don't understand the OP's dilemma. Just wait a couple of hours after the OTA update and get a rooted version of the update... no problem!
It won't be out for a few more months anyways. It isn't even being tested yet. I doubt an initial build is even at Samsung. They are working on the the Galaxy S2 right now(the GSM overseas version). And, I am sure Sprint will sell some other phone with ICS stock before they update ours.

Your device does not support software upgrading via Kies?

UPDATE: EDIT: Ok after about 3 hours of doing anything possible to fix this, I formatted my SD cards and now everything is OK...
Okay, so with the recent news about ICS coming around soon, I decided to take a look at Kies and see if there was any update.
Kies states "Your device does not support software upgrading via Kies". Since I had the phone rooted and running a custom ROM, I returned it to stock using http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1350357, but the same message still persists?
I couldn't find any answers using the forum search or google. Is the phone supposed to be like this or what's going on here?
Thanks for any Help!!
If you are still rooted it won't work. Im running stock ROM with root and i can't update with Kies either.

So I have to unroot it first, then flash the stock images?
Shouldn't flashing back to stock taken out the root? Sorry Im a newb so I need some clarification.
EDIT: Can anyone guide me to an unroot guide for telus? All the threads I find seem to have links that no longer work.
From what I can tell, my device is unrooted and completely stock, but I could be wrong, I dont know.
This is what my about looks like right now

ICS is finally here?

I got a notification this morning that there is an update available but the servers are busy so try again later...
I fired up Kies to see if I could get the new firmware that way, but Kies still says that SGH-I927 doesn't support firmware update via Kies...
Seems strange to me that they would only roll out OTA when other devices can get it via Kies.
Do you think this is just a 2.3 point release or is it (finally) the 4.0 update we've been promised 4 months ago?
I'm hoping it'll grab the update by tomorrow.
I can't wait!
Edit:
I should mention I'm on stock AT&T UCKL1 Android 2.3.6 never rooted or modified in anyway.
Looks like some of the folks posting in the sticky are on 2.3.5 + root so I didn't post there so as not to confuse the discussion.

android ver 4.1.1 after updating through odin

i followed the unroot galaxy s3 thread because i accidentally pressed update when OTA update popped up on my rooted phone.
downloaded the latest android zip and updated with ODIN.
but it doesnt show 4.2 it still shows 4.1.1 android.
im a bit confused.
theres just too much **** available and i lost track of all these build numbers and updates and different programs.
i dont spend much time here anymore after i got rid of the HD2 and now im completely lost.
got other stuff to do cant afford spending 3 hours a day to stay on top of latest repackaged rom release

4.1.1 UVDLJC is the latest official firmware.
oh ok then i thought it was 4.2 for some reason
one more question that i could not understand clearly
once i root the phone again. what specific services do i need to disable to prevent the automatic OTA updates?
i disabled one service related to update but didnt see any others.
and once rooted. do i have to unroot it in order to use odin and manually install OTA update that i downloaded?
im not planning to use custom roms( spent toomuch time making them wrk on HD2 and done with that for good)
jsut stock tmobile roms work fine for me.
thanks for quick reply i was about to try flashing again since i thought that it was supposed to be 4.2 version

You don't have to do anything with ota. When next one comes out you can unroot and install the ota as long as you hav stock recovery. If you have custom recivery you can always update with Samsung kies but you would need to reroot the new ROM. Or just flash a ROM through Odin.
