[Q] What is this AT&T Update that just tried to come on my phone yesterday? - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

I've looked all over and haven't seen anyone else talking about this.
Yesterday, the AT&T Update Service started trying to automatically start downloading an update. Luckily I had bad connectivity and killed it, because I like to confirm what the update is about before being forced.
I have a rooted S3 running stock ICS ROM at the moment. Does anyone know what this update is? And does anyone know a good thread in this forum for finding out more about issues to be aware of, regarding OTA updates on a rooted phone?
Thanks very much.

Which stock ROM are running rooted? LEMand LG1, will most likely try to update you to LH9. You should be able to keep root using ota root keeper from the market. Just backup your root before ruining the update, then restore root after. If your already on lh9 or the newer LI5, it is possible is an update to 4.1 (not likely, though).

I'm on LH9. I got all excited it might be Jelly Bean, but I figured if that were true the whole internet would be buzzing about it. I can't figure out why no one has mentioned anything about an update... I'm kind of excited and suspicious all at the same time.
Thank you for the advice about keeping root.

At&t confirmed 4.1.2 is being released , they would not provide me the exact day
christopher akerland: when your all finished i do have one more question that is off topic that i was hoping you could shed some light on
Luzviminda Bright: While I'm working on the credit, may I ask what would be your question?
christopher akerland: can you tell me if this is accurate

Luzviminda Bright: Yes it's accurate Sir.

In that case, update it. Worse happens is you flash back to lh9

I have had this cause app to detect eligibility for an update that has already been done.

What ROM are you running?
If you're running a 2.2 rom already it might think you are current already
Also, just in case you've missed the other billion times it's been said:
DO NOT UPDATE IF YOU LIKE HAVING ROOT ACCESS TO YOUR PHONE

Then just keep checking, it'll show up eventually.
Try updating your profile, and rebooting wouldn't hurt anything.
Thanks for the ideas. So I guess no one knows if its a gradual roll out or if it's available for everyone yet...
I thought it wasn't coming out till thurs? What did I miss..anyway I won't be updating right now. Waiting for all you impatient people to report the bugs and for things to be updated.
Running rooted 1.47. Happy with it...but want that new PRL and wimax because reception here stinks and can't hold 4g if you step in any direction from where you connected.

[Q] OTA Firmware update unroot?

Sorry if this question has been asked, but I'm curious. Samsung has released 2.3.6, and I'm hoping my issues of LOS, games crashing and charging issues get resolved.
So, I am wondering: If and when update is available and I accept, does it uprooted my phone or brick it?
I'm running Calkulin Rom and Kernel....

simple; you lose root, and possibly brick your phone
I was browsing around yesterday and found that it locks you out of being able to get root on the gsm phones. Haven't herd of the cdma update yet. The at&t phone had security issues that et2 did not. Don't chew me out if I'm wrong.
Yes, in most ota plan to lose root.

Any reason to accept the Jelly Bean OTA?

I unlocked, rooted, and flashed the leaked 4.1 update a couple weeks ago. Now I'm getting the notification for the official OTA.
1. Is there any beneficial reason to update?
2. If not, how do I disable the notification from reappearing constantly?
3. If I do update, will I lose root? Will it wipe my phone?

1. Yes, the OTA update is for 4.1.1 which contains additional fixes, etc. over 4.1. See other threads in this forum for details on the exact differences/improvements.
2. n/a, update to 4.1.1.
3. You will lose root, but if you use CWM to flash the OTA manually just also flash SuperSU immediately after, before rebooting (this is what I do.. there are other "keep root" methods as well, as described in other threads). The OTA update will not wipe your phone.
Note that this assumes you're running the stock odexed and unmodified version from Google I/O. If you're using a modified version, you'll need to flash a factory image and update that. You'll also need to be running the correct radio. See other on-going threads in this forum for more details.
Hope this helps.

I'm not seeing the changes between 4.1.1 and 4.1.
Can anyone provide a link? I'm browsing the desktop website from my phone, so not very convenient to read through every thread.
Anyone?
Look at it from this way: 4.1.1 is Jelly Bean.
4.1 is not Jelly Bean, it's a preview build for developers that is was intended for everyday use. What do you hope to achieve by not updating?
The leak wasn't s finish build ... it was still buggy here and there ..
4.1.1 fixes some things, plus its a major release ...
Why would you want to stay on a leak for?
It takes literally about 5mins to root your device again

Simply put, update to 4.1.1 and then if your using a Windows PC, install the Toolkit in the Development forum, and then re-root using that, takes all of about 2 minutes.

My phone works perfectly fine on 4.1. 100% perfectly fine. The notification is annoying though, but it seems to have gone away after the failed update.
Does anyone even know what was changed in 4.1.1? I've been searching through these threads and Googling but haven't been able to find a single post detailing the differences.
So it sounds like you were already predetermined to stay on 4.1. Why did you bother asking if you should update if you were only wanting replies that agreed with you!?!

If you look at the OP, I clearly asked if there was any beneficial reason to update. No one posted a single concrete reason to update aside from "it's official". If someone would have posted actual, real improvements that are in 4.1.1, obviously I would have taken that into consideration.

Simple versioning says that a 4.1 to 4.1.1 update is an extremely minor update to start with. For the most part, it's just some extra polish and a few minor bug fixes. Some people report that it's essentially the same, while others report that 4.1.1 is a bit smoother than 4.1.

4.2 Officially Out For Rogers S3's
Just got a text message from my carrier (Rogers) that Jelly Bean 4.2 is offically out for my S3 and I can update OTA from them. See the attached photo for proof.
I'm currently running a custom ROM and have no intention of updating. Just wanted to spread the word that it's out at least on my carrier and likely the other Canadian 'M' variants of the i747.

An official text message from my carrier about the 4.2 update is more than promising. It's sounds pretty official to me. I don't know if it's 4.2.1 or 4.2.2 until someone actually does the update. For me to revert back to stock to get the update isn't possible right now. I just don't have the time. I will at some point in the future do the update though to take advantage of the updated bootloader and other under the hood firmware.
I'm running CM10.1 right now which requires bootloader LK4 so an update for me would break my ability to flash the latest nightlies. Until the assertion gets updated, I'm going to hold off.
I'm on Rogers in Canada
I was doing some maintenance on my SD card, backing up the contents to my local PC and then formatting it in Android, in prep to do a few other unrelated things, when I came across this thread. I saw the user's post above about Rogers texting about the 4.2.x update so I quickly ran off and tried to update via "Software Update". I received the "device is modified, FU jerkface!" prompt, so I rebooted into recovery, wiped, and planned to restore my TWRP stock/unrooted ROM. However I forgot that I had not restored the contents of my SD card back to the device before doing the factory reset in TWRP, so now I'm stuck with a GS3, no OS, no SD card and no way of fixing it until I redownload everything manually..
So, now I'm downloading the official 613MB file and have Odin ready and waiting, and the phone in download mode. I'll restore the 4.1.1, and then check software update before rooting (so it doesn't ***** about being 'modified') and confirm back here which version it is, and if it's a network wide update or something else.. stand-by!
Sorry about your SD card.. But it was for a good cause ! Haha thanks man excited to hear the results

Apparently it's an update to fix issues with the battery and various bugs. Just updated gonna see what it's all about today.

If you also care about keeping Knox in tact with root on this OF8 5.1.1, you're simply out of luck. If you don't care, flash the OF6 Odin image and then check for system updates (or just wait for this OF8 image to be posted). Then install TWRP and/or the latest Unikernel.

Some folks that "odined" OCG didn't have the option in developer options to turn on OEM unlock.
So for them its extremely risky.
