Time has come to get thinking about the new phone. i loved/still am tp2. What do look, Where to look. Please reccomned.
Nothing really good in sight.
Here is a comparison between the Desire Z and Touch Pro 2 in case you really want to upgrade.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=955526
The Desire Z seems really fragile especially the hinge - makes you wonder if one day it will break on you. I also consider to make a switch now that the TP2 is really old but a good replacement model has yet to come. Best is to go to a shop and try the Desire Z to see if it suits you.
Personally, I won't go to a Desire Z - maybe if you like a larger screen/Android, you can consider the Desire HD/Desire or even Hd2.

Those devices don't have a qwerty keyboard. They have a complete different form factor.

For an another browser, try uZardWebp
i have it, but it doesnt work like skyfire. so its not really a solution for flash.
Thinking Nokia E7
I'm facing this dilemma as well...I've had my TP2 since day one and was greatly anticipating the 7Pro (HTC Arrive on Sprint). I was disappointed to see the 7Pro didn't have a front facing camera nor did most of the application work in landscape mode, this to me was the most alarming thing.
This has become very frustrating as I don't want to become a Blackberry guy, nor do I really want the Desire Z. What I want is a newer version Pro2 with the same keyboard and a smoother OS.
I was thinking the E7 might be a viable option even though its has a 4-row keyboard. The front facing camera will work with Tmobile's 3G...but the OS is Symbian3 which is severely behind Apple, Android, and Blackberry but it's the only real viable option in my opinion...
Although, cruising around Pocketnow.com I did see HTC trademarked the name Pro so the HTC Pro may be the long awaited Touch Pro 3...hopefully

I think the HTC Arrive is a worthy upgrade to the Touch Pro 2.
I just got my TP2 and am loving it.. when I do eventually look to upgrade this thing, my biggest feature need is TV-out, I use this and GPS more than anything. I have to keep with Windows or Android because of run.GPS which I use a large amount as well to track my runs and bikes.
Anyone know if any WP7 supports TV out at this time?

Thank you,
I have the correct cable, what I was trying to state is that and GPS are the most used functions on the phone (I use these features more than I use it as a phone!)
I was inquiring if there is any current WP7 phones that offer TV-Out, otherwise I dont see myself upgrading anytime in the future.

it is great if you like real keyboard and big screen.
This is my 3rd Windows Mobile phone, and I also had the iPhone 3GS. This is BY FAR the best phone I have ever owend, used, or seen. I'm a picky SOB and do my research before buying anything. This is definitely the best phone, and I will continue to be an HTC customer. They got it 100% right on this one!!
best phone
I bought 2 just to play with.
I have dropped my main one on concrete probably 7 times(not on purpose), got minor dings, but no major functionality issues. flashed rom from SD card and computer probably a hundred times, Hard SPLed it while wasted drunk and still this thing is kickin.
Top notch phone would recommend!
From my point of veiw it is an awsome phone, Try to get it cheap though, as cheaply as possible, because as you probably know htc has the leo out and its only a matter of time for a leo like phone with that 1ghz processor with a keyboard attached. There are plenty of people around asking for it so its bound to happen. So Save some money where you can and buy the tp2 through a carrier and get it through someone who is gsm not cdma so when a new phone comes out you can just pop out the sim and you have a new phone

Great phone, by far my Favorite! It is especially good with a cooked rROM with the My Location Weather in the clock. If you get it through an online retailer (not AT&T directly) with service or as an upgrade you can save some cash.
Try:
amazon
Walmart
NewEgg
can't remember some of the others.

Nothing just use it. Then after your sure you like it Hard SPL it and try a cooked ROM. The stickies in the ROM Development forum will help you once you ready to flash some new ROMs.

What exactly will the roms do for me, and is there any in particular that you would recommend?
Guess I'll be the devil's advocate. My experience with the TP2 is that it's still too slow, whether it's the OS or processor I don't know, but it needs a big boost in speed. I'm definitely grabbing a Snapdragon device when it's available because the TP2 is just a slug.

The stock ROM that came with my AT&T Tilt 2 was actually not too bad at all. I was much quicker and responsive than I was used to on my Tilt 1, even wit it running a custom ROM.
What a ROM for the XDA "cooks" will remove a lot of bloatware from the carriers (trial app that they want you to pay for). This will free up space and resources and can help make you phone more responsive. It can also add feature from the more recent HTC TouchFlo 3D, such as the weather clock. It give you your weather in the clock and with My location service will give your the weather for where you happen to be at the moment. Other nice app included in most cooked ROMs is the Mobile WiFi app. basically allow you to turn you phone into a wireless access point.
I'm using this ROM currently:

I'd honestly say the Touch Pro2 is the best mobile device I've ever had (you can see my past devices in my signature). The screen and keyboard are the best part about the TP2, but the whole thing is near perfect. Whether you're new or old to the Windows Mobile scene, I'd say this is an excellent device which you should most certainly consider.
Hey thanks guys for answering my questions, and thanks lowteckh for giving me another opinion on the matter but, Im getting a new phone in the next two weeks and I'm sure the snapdragon will not come out by then so it will have to be the TP2.
If you particularly want a phone with a hard QWERTY keyboard that runs Windows Mobile then you should check out the Samsung B7610 (a.k.a. Omnia Pro). If you don't want a physical keyboard then you probably don't want a TP2.
There are already Snapdragon-powered devices on the market: the Toshiba TG01, and Acer F1 (a.k.a. NeoTouch) both run Windows Mobile. HTC's own HD2 will be available from T-Mobile UK on Monday. (Of course none of them have physical keyboards).
If you're in America, and you think you don't want Windows Mobile, then the Motorola Droid is worth checking out. The Palm Pre and iPhone 3GS are also worth a look.
Thanks for all the feedback guys, and I like that keyboard on the samsung, it looks solid, but im not a samsung fan . I purchased a Sprint TP2 yesterday and should be getting it soon, Im very excited

I have both the Moment and TP2 I have to say I love the tilt feature of the TP2 the moment has some battery issues and wifi is quirky, broswer are not good, but the App store is awesome. Tp2 best features are automatic profiling and Wifi Router, serving 3g speeds to my friend's Iphone. You made a great choice.

as far as the phone itself, the Rhodium way better than the Kaiser(i have 2 tilts also ). it has a bigger higher quality screen. more finger friendly touch screen, etc...dont get me wrong, the Kaiser(tilt) , in my opinion, was one of the first true do it all phones. i was doing everything with that phone..lol as far as Android on Rhodium concerned, You be better off reading that link that Reefer posted for ya. I have the Tilt 2 with XDAndroid AOSP 2.1 n lovin it
thanks for the replies,
about android
it doesnot seem to be a very fast developement as we have it for the kasier.
do you have just 2 different builds?
what about a sense build? because they released a new one with rosie launcher which looks very nice.
thanks
nick
i believe theres 3 builds goin on simultaneously. the original build, then Aosp 2.1 , and the Klinux 2.1 build. of course the Rhodium isnt going to be as far along as the kaiser. the kaiser been out alot longer b4 the tilt 2. so its Android project is going to be further along in developement. the Rhodium is night and day different than the kaiser. wvga 480*800..its like Kaiser is Nintendo and Rhodium is like playstation 2 or 3..lmao
personally i would hold on to the kaiser until sound is figured out on the rhodium builds that was one of my main concerns when i bought my tilt 2 but as far as development goes Rhodium is going along rather quickly considering on how long development of 2.1 builds on kaiser with and of course Sense 2.1 is gonna be a big improvement when you do move to rhodium
okay thanks
i did buy a pt2 now but i guess then il need to stay with windows mobilke for a few month!
i just hope that the 2.1 android developements goin fast and ill do my best to help out with it!

if you want to buy tp2 purely for android, why the hell would not just buy android-native phone.
no matter how good all these xda builds are, they will never be as good as running a phone designed from the ground up to run android.
even if you want keyboard, there's bunch of android phone to choose from. although with swype and similar types of input, i find myself using physical keyboard less often.

Sprint SERO is the best answer to this one. The jump from $30/month to $60+ is quite a lot to swallow. I'm doing it for the EVO, but my wife just couldn't justify it and bought a TP2 today. She is still on WM, but hopes to be able to dual boot them both once the sound issue is resolved.

I'm on SERO too and upgraded to TP2, but not because of android(it wasn't released then). but again, if you want a phone to run purely android, perhaps look at diamond, i think its development state is further along than tp2.
hey,
thanks for all your advice but ive already bought the tp2...and its not just because android...i have a kaiser right now and running android on it and i just like the tp2 as the device...and not because i could run android on it...
so i just wnated to know what works and what doesnt and what build are availabe...just the current state of developement. but i think im kindof in it now and know the build availabe and as soon as we have a native bootloader for android i might run android again...but for now ill just stick with wimo

There are currently, to my knowledge, no phones that satisfy the following three requirements:
1) Keyboard (N1 doesn't have this)
2) Support for the AT&T 3G band (Everything but N1 and Backflip)
3) Non-backlevel (has to be 2.0 or greater for Android) OS release (Backflip is a cripplephone at 1.5 or 1.6)
In my case once Android for Rhodium becomes more mature, I might use it as an Android phone, but so far thanks to the lack of a phone that offers all three of my requirements above for Android, I'm sticking to the Tilt2 running a Windows Mobile EnergyROM build, which meets all three of my key requirements above.

Here's why, at least in my case... there's no phone out right now that meet ALL the following criteria:
1.) WVGA or greater (480x800)
2.) CDMA (I'm on Sprint)
3.) Native Android (2.1+)
4.) Physical Keyboard (I hate the touchscreen keyboards, always fat fingering, I swapped my diamond for a TP1 because of this)
However, I bought my TP2 originally because I was upgrading from a TP1, never expected to use android on it, but seeing that it's SO much faster than WinMo, I would much rather use it than WinMo... Not to mention unless Windows Phone 7 is some kind of revolutionary break through (which as it seems, it looks like "too little too late") they are going to lose to Android, very quickly, so I'd rather stay ahead of the curve or at least in line with it, rather than fall behind.
Hello everyone!
My father needs a new phone and it looks like the Desire Z is the best option for buying for him.
I'm happy now with my HTC HD2, but I found out that a hell of a lot of tweaking/adjusting register/ROM-updating/enz. had to be done before it was great. When the HD2 came out the phone was great but the software sucked big time. Now I want to know, how about the Desire Z? Are there any bugs or major drawbacks? Anything really not working on these phones?
I'm thinking of trouble like I had with my HD2 which had a 3G/HSDPA-connection that hung up on me every now and than. Audiobooster which you had to turn on (again) after each song, Twitter-tab that never really worked until the last ROM-update and so on...
Let me know what sucks about the Desire Z (or why it's really great)
Thnx!

For me the only minus with DZ are the loose hinge issue, the lack of a front facing camera, the fact that the hardware keyboard does not have all the usual qwerty keyboard characters and that the hardware keyboard does not tilt.
These side, the DZ is great.
To buy or not to buy? The decision will be yours, bearing in mind that there might shortly be better configured devices coming from htc in not too distant a future.
No comparison whatsoever between Windows Mobile and the Android experience on the Desire Z. Having come from the Touch Pro 2, I was used to heavy tweaking & frequent ROM flashing just to make the phone tolerable. The DZ is light years ahead of any Windows Mobile phone. Its fast, smooth, stable, and just a joy to use out of the box. The only real modification I've done is remove the Bell Canada bloatware.

I love my G2, but I wish I still had my Hd2 to enjoy with android, I don't use the keyboard, so the hinge isn't a factor, the 4g service is still in its infancy and spotty at best, and i live in a major city. You could always be waiting for the next thing... there will ALWAYS be something better if you wait just a little longer. At some point, you have to actually buy the thing.
And the other thing is that the wait could be longer than you expect. It took TWO WHOLE YEARS for them to produce a phone that was a worthwhile upgrade over DREAM. A whole lot of phones have had some really compelling benefits, but considering the whole package, nothing else has yet been able to measure up.... so go ahead and wait until October 2012.

That's what I used to say too. But someone else here pointed out a press release from the ITU, who have *changed* their definition of 4G to now include this sort of HSPA+.
Who said the big companies have no influence over the standards bodies ?

Looking at the specs posted on GSM arena the device lacks 1.7 AWS freqs, and hence might only work on EDGE on TMO US.

That's right. Unless it's specificallly made for TMOUS, it's probably not going to have the 1700 band that's required for TMOUS 3G. TMOUS is the only carrier, I believe in the world, that uses that band for 3G.

I agree, the DVP is amazing. HD7 is one of the bottom tier ones though. HTCs initial lineup hasnt been to hot with WP7... it's sad because I love them as a company but their WP7 lineup has been embarrassing. The HD7 has crap battery life and the visuals are bad. Also the apps are much slower to load. Same with the touch pro except add a keyboard that always feels like its about to snap off and a tiny screen. Next theres the surround... dont even think I need to go into what's wrong with that... All in all just thoroughly unimpressive, Dell and Samsung were the ones who really shined and with post-release stuff LG has been good too.
Guess I might have to get the Dell Venue pro. The keyboard looks like it sucks but I guess it's better than nothing. Not being an htc device kind of sucks though for unlocking purposes.

Hello All,
I cannot answer your question regarding whether the HTC 7 Pro will work on T-Mobile US, but I want to ask those of you who have claimed that this device is so bad have actually tried using it.
I have 3 WP7 devices, an LG Panther, HTC 7 Pro and Samsung Omnia7
Of all these devices, the HTC one is the best (although the screen on the other is better I admit).
The battery life is excellent (JUST as good as on either the other phones). The keyboard is excellent.
The ONLY thing that I can find to complain about is that the phone only has 8Gb storage.
My bottom line is: Don't believe what just one person is saying! Get an opinion from more people before you ignore an excellent device!!

O no, believe me, I would get the Htc 7 Pro in a second if I could. I had the Tilt and the Touch pro 2 and loved them both. Switching to sprint is just not an option.

EXACTLY, one mans sh_t is another mans gold. I've also got the 7 Pro and I can say i'm thoroughly satisfied and honestly, I don't know what all the slagging off was about. To each their own.

Guess I might have to get the Dell Venue pro. The keyboard looks like it sucks but I guess it's better than nothing.

The DVP keyboard does not suck. I find it really good, actually, and have been using it MUCH more than I thought I would.
The only thing it lacks is arrow keys like the LG ones.
I am looking for advice from others who have been in my position and tried to go to another phone from the Touch Pro 2. Like most people here I HAVE to have a full keyboard.
My tp2 is having some physical issues and I am wondering if there is greener grass out there (with a faster processor but probably not as good of a keyboard) or if I should just buy another tp2 from the bay.
I'm with t-mobile and it seems like the mytouch 4g slide is my best option if I go new (4 row keyboard...but it's htc and seems to be decent from my research). The sidekick has a 5 row keyboard but seems like a mediocre phone.
Any advice is appreciated.
Thanks.
MT4GS seems like great hardware.
I wouldn't get another TP2 if you can help it. Sure the kb is great... but that's about the only thing "great" about it. Android will get better, but only slightly - I doubt it'll ever be 100% as good as a native Android device with the exact same hardware - which keep in mind is ancient by mobile standards. Start talking about/comparing newer hardware, and the TP2 is a lost cause.

Yeah, the processor is a vast improvement and the memory is triple, I think. The keyboard doesn't have the numbers row and might not even have arrows but I think I'm going to have to move on. It's been a good couple of years. I think based on my join date here I got it in dec/jan of '10. So I'm coming up on 2 years. Hardware changes too fast to stay relevant much longer than that.
sry to hijack your thread but i have pretty much the same question. my tp2 died on me yesterday and i urgently need to find a replacement. i am temporarily using my old dusty Wing for now, lol.
what's a good phone to replace tp2 currently? i like to stay with windows but it seems the window phone are not getting much love so i am open to go android (just got my kindle fire in the mail today so might as well give android a try)
i am not big on social networking, so all these twitter and facebook app don't really attract me that much. i primarily use my tp2 for business, need email (imap), calandar (able to sync with outlook calandar), conference calling would be nice, and some basic internet browsing (espn, cnn, etc)
base on the above, what would you recommend?

Any of those needs would be met with WP7, iOS or Android. I say use your Kindle, then go to the phone store and use WP7. Read reviews, understand the pros and cons of each system and understand how they will effect you and whether or not you care.

Go with Android! I would prefer a phone with at least 512MB memory.

I second that. The Rhodium has been out for so long now but reality is that it's seriously outdated, although it is a sturdy as hell phone that can run android pretty darn well. The only thing I miss about my Tilt2 is how sturdy that thing is. The keyboard, you could buy a slide phone but think of it realistically. The less moving parts, the less of a chance of it breaking(not to mention how slimmer it gets) . Also, there are so many android keyboards out there that can really help you cope with not having a slide keyboard. Get an Android phone, I'd recommend Samsung. Motorola is nice but their MotoBlur UI is too cruddy. HTC isn't too bad either except that their batteries suck ass.
Sent from my nice little phone... or should I say huge gigantic beast
Meh, I love my slide out 5 row keyboard. I'm not switching to a new phone anytime soon. Keeping an eye on Android development for the TP2 though.

Those developers are brewing something great too .
The issue with my TP2 is strange. when I slide out the keyboard it will go to landscape for a second...then switch back and think it's closed.
From what I have read the open/close is determined by magnets. That doesn't make much sense since they seem to be able to tell that the phone was opened/closed...but then forget. That seems to be more like a contact issue. I opened the phone up but don't exactly know what to look for when it comes to an intermittent problem like this. It doesn't make much sense based on the research I have done and information I read.
