Should i switch?

Right now i have a Blackberry Bold (9000) & i have had WM phones in the past...I have been looking at the new Tilt it i like the phone but i wanted to know a few things before i get it.
1. Will it be able to use the new WM7?
2. Is the phone any good when it comes to texting & emails?
3. What are the key features to this phone?
I have also saw that you can put Android on the phone. How does that run?
Sorry i just wanted to know a few things before jumping into the phone.

1. How is the App Store?

app store sucks but as you know there are tons of wm apps that are scattered everywhere on the net

The TP2 will not get an official WP7 upgrade. The phone's processor is too slow, wrong button layout, and no capacitive screen. WP7 requires a capacitive screen (multi-touch) and a 3 button layout (including a dedicated "Bing" search button) on the front of the phone, and MS is being very strict about these requirements. Somebody on XDA will cook something for the TP2, but don't expect anything official.
If you use your phone heavily for work, the TP2 has a great speakerphone. I love the feature of just turning the phone over, and it switches automatically to speaker phone (with a hardware mute button!). Also, the ability to tether is very useful, if you travel frequently.

I wouldn't even worry about the WP7. I highly doubt this thing will be that great right off the bat. I'm not even intrigued by most of it. I highly recommend the tilt2 and you know that if you ever have problems, you always have this forum to fall back on. So much customization is possible with this phone, and that extent of customization for the WP7 will not be available for quite a while after those phones start coming out.

I think the tp2 is awsome but since i know there are a few WM device coming out right around the corner with snapdragon processors I would probably wait on them unless u need to get a new device asap.

Do NOT base your decision on this or expect this. This will most likely not happen since it is a completely different OS and kernel and would require completely new drivers.
You might want to try one out before getting it. The processor in this phone is the same one that they used for the previous generation and that is just a higher clocked version of the processor used in the generation before. It is pretty slow and takes about 4 seconds to load a text message conversation. That is pretty slow for a bunch of text.
If the speed is acceptable, then its a pretty nice device.

Wasn't that the case when Android came along though? But, I do agree that even if wtfomgwm7sp7 ever does get ported to the TP2, it won't be a pretty picture, kinda like that kid at the birthday party who tried to stuff the entire piece of cake in his mouth at once

That actually sums it up quite well...the TP2 isn't quite the bleeding edge of whats available in smartphones today, but you just have to decide if that (minor) level of compromise is justified to you by getting the sweetest hardware keyboard there is, period.* For some it is, for some it isn't.

i think about buying a touch pro 2 and as now im running android on the htc kaiser and love it i want to have it on the touch pro 2 too
so could someone please tell me the current state?

as far as the phone itself, the Rhodium way better than the Kaiser(i have 2 tilts also ). it has a bigger higher quality screen. more finger friendly touch screen, etc...dont get me wrong, the Kaiser(tilt) , in my opinion, was one of the first true do it all phones. i was doing everything with that phone..lol as far as Android on Rhodium concerned, You be better off reading that link that Reefer posted for ya. I have the Tilt 2 with XDAndroid AOSP 2.1 n lovin it

i believe theres 3 builds goin on simultaneously. the original build, then Aosp 2.1 , and the Klinux 2.1 build. of course the Rhodium isnt going to be as far along as the kaiser. the kaiser been out alot longer b4 the tilt 2. so its Android project is going to be further along in developement. the Rhodium is night and day different than the kaiser. wvga 480*800..its like Kaiser is Nintendo and Rhodium is like playstation 2 or 3..lmao

personally i would hold on to the kaiser until sound is figured out on the rhodium builds that was one of my main concerns when i bought my tilt 2 but as far as development goes Rhodium is going along rather quickly considering on how long development of 2.1 builds on kaiser with and of course Sense 2.1 is gonna be a big improvement when you do move to rhodium

there is a samsung with full physical keyboard and android 2.0
i thinks time to close..

if you want to buy tp2 purely for android, why the hell would not just buy android-native phone.
no matter how good all these xda builds are, they will never be as good as running a phone designed from the ground up to run android.
even if you want keyboard, there's bunch of android phone to choose from. although with swype and similar types of input, i find myself using physical keyboard less often.

Sprint SERO is the best answer to this one. The jump from $30/month to $60+ is quite a lot to swallow. I'm doing it for the EVO, but my wife just couldn't justify it and bought a TP2 today. She is still on WM, but hopes to be able to dual boot them both once the sound issue is resolved.

I'm on SERO too and upgraded to TP2, but not because of android(it wasn't released then). but again, if you want a phone to run purely android, perhaps look at diamond, i think its development state is further along than tp2.

thanks for all your advice but ive already bought the tp2...and its not just because android...i have a kaiser right now and running android on it and i just like the tp2 as the device...and not because i could run android on it...
so i just wnated to know what works and what doesnt and what build are availabe...just the current state of developement. but i think im kindof in it now and know the build availabe and as soon as we have a native bootloader for android i might run android again...but for now ill just stick with wimo

There are currently, to my knowledge, no phones that satisfy the following three requirements:
1) Keyboard (N1 doesn't have this)
2) Support for the AT&T 3G band (Everything but N1 and Backflip)
3) Non-backlevel (has to be 2.0 or greater for Android) OS release (Backflip is a cripplephone at 1.5 or 1.6)
In my case once Android for Rhodium becomes more mature, I might use it as an Android phone, but so far thanks to the lack of a phone that offers all three of my requirements above for Android, I'm sticking to the Tilt2 running a Windows Mobile EnergyROM build, which meets all three of my key requirements above.

Here's why, at least in my case... there's no phone out right now that meet ALL the following criteria:
1.) WVGA or greater (480x800)
2.) CDMA (I'm on Sprint)
3.) Native Android (2.1+)
4.) Physical Keyboard (I hate the touchscreen keyboards, always fat fingering, I swapped my diamond for a TP1 because of this)
However, I bought my TP2 originally because I was upgrading from a TP1, never expected to use android on it, but seeing that it's SO much faster than WinMo, I would much rather use it than WinMo... Not to mention unless Windows Phone 7 is some kind of revolutionary break through (which as it seems, it looks like "too little too late") they are going to lose to Android, very quickly, so I'd rather stay ahead of the curve or at least in line with it, rather than fall behind.

My father needs a new phone and it looks like the Desire Z is the best option for buying for him.
I'm happy now with my HTC HD2, but I found out that a hell of a lot of tweaking/adjusting register/ROM-updating/enz. had to be done before it was great. When the HD2 came out the phone was great but the software sucked big time. Now I want to know, how about the Desire Z? Are there any bugs or major drawbacks? Anything really not working on these phones?
I'm thinking of trouble like I had with my HD2 which had a 3G/HSDPA-connection that hung up on me every now and than. Audiobooster which you had to turn on (again) after each song, Twitter-tab that never really worked until the last ROM-update and so on...
Let me know what sucks about the Desire Z (or why it's really great)

For me the only minus with DZ are the loose hinge issue, the lack of a front facing camera, the fact that the hardware keyboard does not have all the usual qwerty keyboard characters and that the hardware keyboard does not tilt.
These side, the DZ is great.
To buy or not to buy? The decision will be yours, bearing in mind that there might shortly be better configured devices coming from htc in not too distant a future.

No comparison whatsoever between Windows Mobile and the Android experience on the Desire Z. Having come from the Touch Pro 2, I was used to heavy tweaking & frequent ROM flashing just to make the phone tolerable. The DZ is light years ahead of any Windows Mobile phone. Its fast, smooth, stable, and just a joy to use out of the box. The only real modification I've done is remove the Bell Canada bloatware.

do you need the physical keyboard? if not flash a nice android ROM on the HD2 and go to town. I left my TP2 and HD2 because winmo 6 had come as far as it could, and android leaped ahead of it. I love my G2, but I wish I still had my Hd2 to enjoy with android, I don't use the keyboard, so the hinge isn't a factor, the 4g service is still in its infancy and spotty at best, and i live in a major city. Save you money or your tmobile upgrade credit, and wait for something significantly better and that ain't the nexus S

i have whats considered a newer desire z (i guess) and the hinge has not been a problem whatsoever. Its by far the best phone i have ever owned (Nexus one, desire, moto milestone). You will enjoy the accuracy of a real hardware keyboard as well.

+1. I had a TP2 as well, and the stock ROM sucked.
I am still running the stock ROM (1.34) on my Desire Z, and I love it. I'm sure the custom ROMs are great/even better, but the stock ROM on the DZ is so much better as an experience compared to my old WinMo phone.

Avoid actually paying money for anything that comes with MS on it... you should only pay for things that you actually USE.

How can you not use the keyboard? I've tried struggling my way through the IME, but despite the missing characters, I continually find myself opening the keyboard. Much MUCH easier to type with real physical buttons.

WHAT 4G service? Despite the lies, tmobile does NOT have ANY kind of 4G service. What they have is [email protected] Mb/s. It is STILL 3G and 3G ONLY.
Save you money or your tmobile upgrade credit, and wait for something significantly better and that ain't the nexus S

You could always be waiting for the next thing... there will ALWAYS be something better if you wait just a little longer. At some point, you have to actually buy the thing.
And the other thing is that the wait could be longer than you expect. It took TWO WHOLE YEARS for them to produce a phone that was a worthwhile upgrade over DREAM. A whole lot of phones have had some really compelling benefits, but considering the whole package, nothing else has yet been able to measure up.... so go ahead and wait until October 2012.

That's what I used to say too. But someone else here pointed out a press release from the ITU, who have *changed* their definition of 4G to now include this sort of HSPA+.
Who said the big companies have no influence over the standards bodies ?

Time has come to get thinking about the new phone. i loved/still am tp2. What do look, Where to look. Please reccomned.

The Desire Z seems really fragile especially the hinge - makes you wonder if one day it will break on you. I also consider to make a switch now that the TP2 is really old but a good replacement model has yet to come. Best is to go to a shop and try the Desire Z to see if it suits you.
Personally, I won't go to a Desire Z - maybe if you like a larger screen/Android, you can consider the Desire HD/Desire or even Hd2.

Those devices don't have a qwerty keyboard. They have a complete different form factor.

im with sprint in america nad have a sweet deal in order to get a new phone i would have to switch plans. i love the tp2 just want a better camera and front facing camera and a browser with flash now that skyfire is gone

i have it, but it doesnt work like skyfire. so its not really a solution for flash.

I'm facing this dilemma as well...I've had my TP2 since day one and was greatly anticipating the 7Pro (HTC Arrive on Sprint). I was disappointed to see the 7Pro didn't have a front facing camera nor did most of the application work in landscape mode, this to me was the most alarming thing.
This has become very frustrating as I don't want to become a Blackberry guy, nor do I really want the Desire Z. What I want is a newer version Pro2 with the same keyboard and a smoother OS.
I was thinking the E7 might be a viable option even though its has a 4-row keyboard. The front facing camera will work with Tmobile's 3G...but the OS is Symbian3 which is severely behind Apple, Android, and Blackberry but it's the only real viable option in my opinion...
Although, cruising around Pocketnow.com I did see HTC trademarked the name Pro so the HTC Pro may be the long awaited Touch Pro 3...hopefully

I think the HTC Arrive is a worthy upgrade to the Touch Pro 2.

I just got my TP2 and am loving it.. when I do eventually look to upgrade this thing, my biggest feature need is TV-out, I use this and GPS more than anything. I have to keep with Windows or Android because of run.GPS which I use a large amount as well to track my runs and bikes.
Anyone know if any WP7 supports TV out at this time?

I have the correct cable, what I was trying to state is that and GPS are the most used functions on the phone (I use these features more than I use it as a phone!)
I was inquiring if there is any current WP7 phones that offer TV-Out, otherwise I dont see myself upgrading anytime in the future.

HTC Rhodium still useful in an iPhone/WP7/Android era.

I still love my Cricket flashed TP2 (Sprint) and enjoy customizing it in fact. Very flexible like the HD2 and the keyboard is still one of the best in the industry. Anyone still using theirs today?

What's an iPhone?

Hell yeah I still use mine. It still does everything I want to do and its not the run of the mill phones of today.
Next up is taking it to europe for a couple weeks, swapping the sim card and still enjoying it there...

I would still use mine if I did not switch to Verizon.

I still have mine too. I had to turn off that stupid slow Sence, but with Titanium is Rhodium fast and working great. And it does all what I need My lovely Rhodium.

This piece of Krapp Fone (yes with a K), its freakin slooooooooooooooowwwww. I use to think iphone 3G's was inferior back in 09. I still have my rhodium I honestly would love to use my sledge hammer, and cripple the dam thing!!! but if i can make $50 bucks of it, I'll be happier. couldn't stand memory leak issue with Windows mobile. Gladly, I am in the Samsung Galaxy S2 scene now, where there is not such thing as slowdowns.

A month ago I would've agreed with you. But now that I finally got an Android native phone, I could never go back. You think there a lot of customizations with winmo and CHT, take that times 100 and you have Android. The things you can do is off the charts. You'll know what I mean when you finally move on from your TP2.

i totally agree with you. this phone has caused me nothing but trouble in the longrun. it was quite good for a short period of time. ive just got myself a samsung galaxy s2 myself and there is no effin way im going back to tp2 ever. this phone i have now is crazily fast, there's truly no competition whatsoever (even an older android phone would beat the tp2).

I agree. Many think the Rhodium and winmo is the end all be all of customizability... but things have changed.

Had tp2 for two years. Beautiful phone aesthecally unbeatable keyboard. The mistake I made was upgrading to Sense. The phone was never designed to run sense....slowed it down completely. Also it began to have random shut downs and crashes with Sense. It was irritating to have to install apps like Clean Ram in order to rescue my phone from crashing and keep it workable each day.
The straw that broke the camels back was when youtube hq video support for tp2 stopped.....it finally hit home that I had an aging phone that was unable to keep up with the times....a phone that youtube and adobe flash were now overlooking. Windows mobile had had its day it seemed. As such, it was time to put my tp2 in my 'museum' drawer along with my htc diamond and old ipaq.
I switched to a phone that was ahead of the times and might provide at least two years of futureproof peace of mind due to its specs...samsung gs2. Android is the future imho. I still occasionally use my htc hero without any problems - bar the smallish screen...

Yup, with Android you get the customization options, and you also get an OS that actually works and has a ton of good software. If you need to stay with WinMo for personal reasons, then its tolerable. But if you compare Winmo to Android side to side, there is no contest.

I believe you. I've been using the Tilt 2 for a long time now, and I was waiting for DFT's Android NAND to be out but I gave up waiting last week. It's been lying around for a week without a sim card in it and still has battery life left. It's been running for a week on standby without charging. I moved to the Galaxy S, but I still love the TP2. Great phone it is. I will use it to test if they do come out with a proper android ROM for it.

Im still using mine. My wife upgraded from the touch pro to the arrive running windows 7. It is nice but I still prefer 6.5. I would like a better camera and some sort of d pad to allow one hand use but still have not found a replacement. The xperia x2 looked perfect but it is not available in the US and I would have to switch to ATaT because it is GSM. I love the tp2 and it does almost everything I want. I use it with the stock rom and spb mobile shell. It allows me to customize the phone exactly how I like it.

After running an old Kaiser with a very stable ROM for the last 2 years I "upgraded" my equipment with tp2, which I ever wanted to have. Must say, the Keyboard is great, don't wanna miss it any more! But WM 6.5 is a hard experience...
Till now I've fought over 3 months with this phone! It's such a brilliant concept of a phone, why is it so hard to get it stable??? I think I've tried out nearly any german ROM out in the field, including Energy Rom and the original one from HTC, not a single one was without a bug! The only thing I want it is to be stable, smooth and, well, just working!
Now I stay with the original Stock ROM, by now it seems to be stable, but memory using is a monster, and the phone slows down over the day.
And, after all, I also think of leaving good old WM and change to Androiid, but all I can read is that syncing Android with all my Data in Outlook via USB is also such a tricky job like using ActiveSync...
Has anyone here experience in that?

I have mine for now a year. I dont understand why HTC started to screw their Touch and Type phones. If you look in past, if you buyed a HTC with full qwerty, you became much faster phone than only Touch. Last better Touch and Type was Touch pro. If you compare witch Diamond, it had more Ram. From this point the Touch and type had worse hardware. I dont understand why they made Touch pro 2 with hardware from Touch pro. It was old and in that year came HTC touch HD2 with Snapdragon. So why Touch pro 2 didnt became also? This is only thing what i miss on this phone.
But... i had now for 2 days HTC Desire. I know, it had overheating issue, but i made some tricks to made it working I tryed and i must say, AMOLED, camera, speed, android was the hammer. There are only 2 reason i wouldnt buy one for common use. Absent full qwerty and my TP2 still do all i want. I would miss my 5 row keyboard :-D So still, TP2 is still numero uno for me ;-)
