I just got my Dinc yesterday and I was wanted to know the difference between internal storage and phone memory and what they're used for. I came from the Eris so I've never seen internal storage. Thanks.

Internal storage is like sd card type memory that's not removable. Phone memory is for apps, the rom, data etc.
At least I think so lol

I see. What does the internal memory used for?

Whatever you want. You can put music on there, set your camera to save on internal. No app data tho...

If I could ask, where are you seeing "Internal Storage" and "Phone Memory?"

I have a feeling that this will be a stupid question. But how do I move apps to my external SD. App to SD does not work. Cwm does not show external SD. I'm lost

Well there technically is no reason for Android to move apps to sd because we have so much internal memory, try moving all the media files you have to sd.....

I don't think that's the technical answer. They took that feature out in 4.0, but if you search around you'll find workarounds if you really really want it
Well the internal has told me that I'm running out of space

Damn. You filled up 16GB already wow lol

not currently possible (at least not stock, im not sure if a custom rom will allow it). google and samsung keep pointing fingers at each other as to who's fault it is, but ive heard reports of other devices with ICS having the function, so its probably samsungs fault...
Definitely Samsung's fault, spoke with a technician from Samsung....

So what is everyone using to move apps to external sd? This is driving me crazy if not pissed.. never had internal storage problems on my g2 with minimal storage... can't believe Samsung is selling these phones with no choice to put apps on your external sd card.

Why is my 16 gb T-mobile Note 2 only showing 10 gb? Did i get a defective device, or does this particullar device use 6 gb for system? Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
Quite a bit is used for the system, and is normal (unfortunately)

You can always buy an sd card, you can add 64gb. At least we have an option to add an sd card. If you need more space there's options.

And if you get a usb OTG cable, you can add a flash drive to add even more storage! I got a 64gb card in the phone and another 64gb flash drive which I've loaded with music and videos.

There's an option to transfer user apps to sd card in Titanium Backup paid version.

I was looking for an easy way to do this because I am lazy. Saw scripts and stuff but that seemed like work.I tried this, but I am not certain it works, at least not well. I ran it, and it says it ran successfully, but the device memory didn't change at all. Same amount taken up by applications, same available space over all.
However, I did try to move the apps back and forth again to test this, so maybe it moved once, but then refused to move any more. Not sure...
Do I have to have a rooted phone in order to move stuff to my sd card? This is insane that u can't move apps or music to an sd card. WHY would Samsung do that?

They are probably not transferring because they don't run properly from the external sd. There's plenty of room for apps in the internal.

Wth does ram have to do with nand memory?
To OP. That is correct amount but not cause of RAM. The 16gb memory is partitioned for system, cache data etc.
And the one left is your sdcard.
You can always an external sdcard for music, photos and movies.
But game data and some other data like from gps apps must install in internal.

I just read something about nand memory being used as ram extension. I have no idea if that is the case here or not. http://wikibon.org/wiki/v/The_adoption_of_NAND_Flash_as_a_Seamless_Extension_of_RAM_Memory

If I understand that correctly it means that after ram is filled it will use nand space as virtual ram. I think that would decrease read speeds as nand is significantly slower than ram.

Yes that is what I understood from the article too, so we have dedicated 2gb of ram that has nothing to do with the 16 gb of storage, right? I wasnt entirely sure

Yes. Ram is autonomous memory. Nothing to do with the internal 16gb nand flash memory.

Thabks again for the help
Am I missing some memory? Shouldnt I have more available then 3.5? Is this normal guys I thought this phone has 16gb internal?
Sent from my SGH-M919 using xda app-developers app
You got one of the recall S4's probably. Shake the phone and see if you hear something rattle, if so thats the missing memory. Take it back to the store for recall replacment
Some of that 16gb is dedicated to the "system" (Rom and pre installed app)

Most likely the other part of you answer. Although its a 16gb device only around half of it is usable storage. Still after flashing a ROM I tend to have 7+GB available. Backups take a big chunk. 2.5 - 3gb and by default store internally. Move these to an external SD and select external as default storage on next backup. I actually have a separate 32gb thumb drive+ otg cable with a backup from multiple ROMs. And I select the USB otg option. Keeps my on board SD cards clean.
