Hi,
I recently upgraded from an HTC Magic to an HTC Desire HD.
I noticed that the overall sound quality on the DHD is very poor.
I first noticed it when making a call, and the sound was very tinny. It sounded like the treble was turned way up, perhaps in an effort to increase clarity, which resulted in distortion and clipping. I suppose you could also describe it as a high pitched "buzz". I thought it might be the speaker, but ruled that out when I found the same result when using headphones or plugged into an external sound system.
The problem is noticeable in any situation:
a) The earpiece, when making calls
b) The loud speaker, when on speaker-phone or playing music
c) Line-out (headphones, speaker, sound systems, etc) for calls and music
d) Even just the "beep" the phone makes when you turn up the volume, or any other system sounds (high pitched ones obviously make the buzz more prevalent)
I did some searching online and found a few forum threads, and some people agree that it's not very good while others say it is fantastic.
The review on GSM Arena seems to agree that the SQ is lacking, but that seems to contradict what I've heard a lot of people on the forums say.
The main problem is that people have different opinions of what is acceptable, what is good, and what is not.
So, I created a video in attempt to demonstrate what I'm talking about.
I ask that you please watch it, and tell me if it sounds similar to your Desire HD, or if there is something wrong with mine. When comparing your phones to other makes or models, does yours sound a lot more trebley and tinny?
The first part of the video is a speakerphone comparison with a Samsung Galaxy S and my DHD. It's kind of hard to tell in the video, but it's clearly evident in person. I also included a line-out recording with the DHD and an HTC Magic, which I think illustrates the issue a bit better. The last part of the video is comparing audio, from a computer, an SGS, and the DHD. The volume from the SGS and the DHD were pretty low, so I had to boost them a bit in post-processing which does make the "tinny" clipped treble sound very apparent, albeit a little exaggerated.
This issue is less prevelent in some styles of music, so I will also include a link to the exact song used in my tests in case anyone would be so kind as to try playing it back on their device and see if they get the same result.
Tycho - Past is Prologue
I should also mention that SRS and Dolby and all that jazz don't make a difference -- while they do make some songs sound better, the high pitched "buzz" distortion is still present -- and since it's there with plain old system sounds, ringtones, calls, etc., I think it is fair to assume that the music EQ and effects don't really have anything to do with the issue.
Finally, here is the video (be sure to select 720p for optimum audio quality):

I thank you for your time and your help!!
By the way, I am currently running Android Revolution HD 3.2 and my radio version is 12.41.60.19_26.06.04.14_M

While I am on the Rogers network, my DHD did originally come from Telus... Would that fix still apply to me?
Are you referring to the TurboniumX fix linked below, or is there more than one?

I am running the most recent Revolution HD ROM (3.2), which is running 2.2.1
Furthermore, I just heard from the creator of the Revolution HD mod, who says that the "TurboniumX audio fix is included in the ROM".
I'm stumped.
i mean the official 2.2.1 update by htc
it adds makes it easier to text, fixs the lag on dhd, improve on camera, fixes major bugs and improves the audio by alot but i think u need to unroot to update

Stupid question...
Is there any way to increase the base volume level on the Incredible? Listening to podcasts via the speaker phone is sometimes challenging in certain environments. I would like to be able to increase the levels if possible.
Anyone know if this is possible?
I also would like to increase the volume on this , Bluetooth and inbound calls.

Same, but for all audio out.
There was an app called LVH (Louder Volume Hack) in the market that I purchased when I had my Eris that worked PERFECTLY for this on CM5/CM6/Stock Sense. But the app doesn't appear to work on my Incredible. Which sucks Because I LOVED being able to crank the headset/bluetooth volume.. I would love to see something like this working on the inc..
!EDIT! Apparently I just didn't try enough times because I got the app working on the official OTA 2.2! The app appears to work but I do not think the volume is actualy being increased.. gonna try the 4.0 Beta.
Devs Page: http://androidaudiohacks.com/home/
LVH Apparently Doesn't work for DINC!
Hi Guys,
Purchased the LVH from Meltus, thinking that with root, I'd have no problem using it, but while it did run, and say it had successfully pushed the proper values, it didn't seem to increase the volume. I wrote the dev, & he told me it doesn't work with the Droid Incredible :-(
His site: http://androidaudiohacks.com, does have disclaimers and info indicating the app is for earlier phones like the G1, and Saphire, and doesn't work on Droid, or branded android phones, but not clear enough for idiots like me! He also said in his reply that Google had locked access to the volume files on later phones, and so increasing the volume requires modifying the kernel.
Incredibles are known for blowing out their own speakers. I recommend avoiding this.my speaker is a little blown just with normal use. I now play audio 2 clicks from max volume.

I've been looking for the same thing. Took a trip a week ago and could not hear a movie with my earphones on the plane ride. I just found a new post last night in the "themes and apps" sub forum titled Audio/Equalizer. It has a this link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=783737 to a DSP equalizer you can install. You must be rooted. Works well for me with a modest gain in volume and improved sound quality. You can simply put the zip in the root directory of your sd card and use clockwork mod to install the zip. (you may have to toggle signature verification off first). Just make sure to do a Nandroid backup first in case you encounter a problem.
Thanks guys! You both ROCK!

I didn't know about the speaker issue. My interest has been more focused on use with headphones, and in-call, which is a different speaker than the one I believe you are referring to.
I noticed the sound from the Incredible rear speaker was quite a bit higher fidelity than on other HTC phones I've owned, which may account for its being a bit more fragile, but that's just speculation. I'll be a lot more careful with it.

Hi, I went from Winmo to the iPhone and Skype finally worked . Still it had a lot of bugs. Now I'm on Android for a week and I find Skype completely unusuable.
The video chat shows 2 images on top of each other. Audiolevels are flawed.
And text chat is extremely slow. I get to see a new msg sometimes 2 Minutes! after the notification and also typing is wet laggy.
All in all - useless.
Is it just me?
Same problems here.
Also it only works in landscape. I hope there will be an update soon...

I'm anxious to upgrade my phone to a later Android device (OneX or SIII) but still hanging back with my Motorola Atrix 2 w/2.3.6 installed, this appears to be the last functional version of Android Gingerbread (Honeycomb 3.2.x it still works fine too) it runs fine on. If Skype were still the same company prior to Microsoft Pw0ning it we would have a fully functional version of Skype for ICS. Also, ICS doesn't work on my Japanese Tablet: Sharp Galapagos 7" so it's a global issue with Skype.

this problem also exists with cm10 for the ville,.. did you hear from any devices not coming from htc with this problem?
You might consider Meridian, my media player of choice for the Android platform. It is very intuitive, excellent features, such as a native digital EQ, etc. You can specify several media locations to search for music, video, etc. It just received an update over the weekend, which helped aestheticly, and the developer is constantly enhancing the app. I'm using it in the gym right now, on the StairMaster. Coupled with Beats Audio, it is unbeatable. Have fun!

I haven't noticed any videos of the latest test firmware (2.15) floating anywhere around so i thought i would do those none-rooted users a favor and show you a short demonstration of what kind of smooth UI us rooted users are experiencing in contrast to the IMO laggy UI we have on 1.26~1.29 roms. This is actually one of my first videos ever and i hardly even ever use a camera other than the one on my HOX to record videos. So yeah! I hope the clip i've uploaded for demonstration purposes is clear enough. Really there is little to no lag at all

And oh yeah, i do go into screen-on time in the video, but don't worry the battery life shown isn't what it should be. It has more to do with the fact that i reflashed the rom and had a few calls + listened to over 40 minutes of music today. I believe in total i'd have nearly 2 hours screen time by now if i hadn't restarted or reflashed.
Whatever!

Well, from what i've been informed the firmware itself actually has that implemented. However, it was not enabled by HTC. So although it is actually implemented by HTC, it was disabled and one of the devs had to re-enable it.

Hi all,
I just bought my new HTC One V, day before yesterday.
Playing sound (i.e., music) through the speakers, I only hear one channel (left or right, not sure).
Playing sound through headphones or bluetooth, I hear both.
Is that normal for this phone? Or is it a hardware fault (I have tried several music players. The stock player, vlc, vanilla).
The example song I was using was 'No expectations' from the Rolling stones....
At the lead in, where you have the rhythm guitar playing the chords, and then the lead guitar comes in with the slide on the other channel (mostly)....
well, its that slide guitar that I barely hear (because it is mainly on that channel that isn't being played through the phone speaker).
So, what do you reckon. Take it back? Or is this normal? As long as it is not a fault, then I am satisfied.
Thanks in advance!
sean
Is it a bug, or is it a feature?
Hi guys,
i'm hoping someone else still owns this phone... and can tell me if they hear both channels (left & right) out of the regular speaker when playing music.... surely someone can quickly check this for me?
Gratefully,
Sean
I checked with this http://www.audiocheck.net/audiotests_stereo.php and I only could hear left
Hi
Yes its "normal"
Speaker is actually mono and right channel is "skipped"
But dont ask me why the right one
max
ok, good enough
Thanks guys,
guess it is a firmware stuff up ... and we all suffer from it.
Granted, not many people listen to music through that little speaker, but sometimes one has no choice....
and then to only hear one channel, its a little disappointing ..... htc....
Otherwise, so far, a good phone.
thanks again for your answers.
Hi
You wont believe it
THIS IS A BUG IN HTC STOCK KERNEL!!!!!
Well - next KISS kernel will have a fix

Hey Hey!
thanks for the info!
I didn't think it was normal.
And while it is a little disappointing to find what I thought such an obvious bug in a popular phone,
i've been nothing but impressed so far with the number of updates coming through from HTC,
so if they do indeed manage to fix this one soon, they'll have one (more) happy customer.

Yes, i'm sure it is easy. However, it is not the case where it runs well which I am cautious about, but the case when it does not.
Suddenly, an easy operation becomes not so easy.
What I think I will need to find out are:
1. optimal method to root
2. If possible to backup firmware/os state beforehand
3. Of course, no use backing up unless it is possible to easily restore after accidentally bricking
4. if one can do all this from linux
My need/want becomes now even more urgent, as that latest update I just installed removed from me the the possible to open a browser of choice from a link in my email (for example) and now always only opens the stock browser (which does not suit me).
