Can you clone a phone to work in sprint? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok this might not be the correct area and I apologize in advance but I want to get the thunderbolt phone from Verizon but I have Sprint and I know you cant unlock the thunderbolt to use on the network but could I clone a Thunderbolt with my Evo to make it work? Or could I do the at&t attrix?
Sent from HTC Evo using XDA App

you do know that's 100% illegal right?

Not really, cloning is, but not unlocking a carrier specific phone to use on another, I use to do it all the time to with att to use in T-Mobile. The correct term is sim unlock.

He aksed about cloning. So yes, it's 100% illegal.

Verizon Rom possible?

Is there a way i can make one of the custom roms more Verizon freindly? i would like a way to get a voicemail notification and have the verizon tabs in my market. I currently use Fresh rom which im loving but for the obvious reason there is no verizon stuff.
This is the Evo forum for sprint. Check your local phone forums for a rom.
This is a rom request for a EVO

I think what's being said is, you can't just flash a different ROM for different carriers. The Evo can't be used with Verizon because they won't activate a phone they didn't sell. So your request is nonsensical.
EDIT: You say you're on VZW. Theoretically that's possible, but how did you manage it? Regardless, virtually everybody else is on Sprint, including the devs, so there's no means to develop a ROM for another carrier, and there's certainly no incentive.

O.K. The HTC EVO is an exclusive SPRINT PHONE. Far as we all know the EVO couldn't be activated on WHORIZON!
Who says they won't activate an evo on verizon? It depends on who you know or are. I can't count how many times I have seen a tmobile employee with a jail broken iphone.
Verizon do an ESN swap anytime they want, and if not you can use cdma toolkit to change your esn.

Using an iPhone on TMo is a totally different game. That's GSM which goes off the SIM card. Yes, you could get Verizon to activate an EVO, but they have to agree to do it. Usually they won't, based on what most people have reported from direct experience.
How i have a Evo on Verizon is totally irrelevant to the topic, im simply asking if a few Verizon things could be tossed into a custom rom. Im sure they can but i haven't a clue on how

Oh, well now you've GOT to tell us.
But my original point remains: Nobody else has their Evo on VZW, as far as I'm aware, so nobody has a way to develop the ROM.

My buddy has done esn swaps on multiple phones, so I'm sure it's possible (he used to use verizon phones on sprint network), but like everyone said, since it's pretty uncommon, and there's no way to develop and test for vz roms, you're going to have a hard time finding what you're looking for.

Why would you need a rom for that? Find some verizon android apk's, and try to install them directly on the phone with one of the numerous file managers out there

To OP:Actually the Honest answer is yes, due to a lawsuit against sprint you ARE allowed to bring your own phone to sprint as lone as it's already flashed over to the sprint network, although not everything will work depending on how you flash it or have it done by. it's the same way with all carrier's, if you have a cdma phone it is allowed on any CDMA network (besides possibly the CDMA Iphone4). and any GSM phone will work with any GSM tech Carrier.
To: ichefae85 do a little research before giving someone an answer on this subject, a CDMA phone can be flashed to any Carrier whether it be Cricket, Metro, Boost, or Sprint! They just will not flash all the information over for you, you have to do that either yourself or 3rd-party. Also if you do not believe me Search on google for the FCC ruling on the matter
The reason you CANNOT use a non-Sprint phone on the Sprint network is that ESN cloning (the method used to obtain a flash) is highly illegal when performed by anyone other then network personnel, so while doable, Sprint won't do it so in this case its a felony.

Quick question

Sorry for this stupid question, but if I purchase the htc one x outright, which server providers can I use in the U.S. and how do I go about it?
Thanks and be gentle
At&t new number or port without a contract, but you must goto a corporate owned store. Do not tell them you have a pda and sign up for the 15 dollar data plan or 30 dollar messaging and data unlimited. You can do it over the phone but they will ship you a sin card .
Peace

so I couldnt go to verizon or us cellular? Also, could I wouldn't be able to use my existing phone number, just go into the corporate store with the phone and basically tell them I want to sign up with them? Just want to make sure I have this understood before I do this. This isnt illegal is it?
Thanks again

The One X international unlocked is only for certain GSM frequencies. Well, mainly only AT&T right now in the US.
Verizon uses CDMA and I think US Cellular does too. So it wouldn't be compatible at all and you'd have a brick on your hands.
AT&T, Red Pocket, or Straight Talk.

I'm not saying it will brick it.....i'm saying he has a brick on his hands.
As in, you can use it like a personal media player....but not an actual smartphone with no service/data.

Google Flashing Samsung Epic to Alternat Carriers. I believe you need a donor phone from that carrier.

mine even flashed to a carrier outside US called Smart-Telecom, sometime can be buggy, but as long as you flashed correctly everything should be working.
I know I've seen posts from people who have flashed their epic to work on Boost or Cricket.

Our epic's use CDMA technology, theoretically, they could be reprogrammed to work on any CDMA Carrier given that the following is done.
#1 The Carrier allows adding ESNs to their database, thus you'll get working talk and text.
(You'll have to manually know the rest of the programming to each carrier and input the missing values. Not to mention some companies make it even tougher by hardcoding things into the framework-res)
#2 The carrier does NOT allow adding of ESNs to which you'll then need to drop more bills, buy a donor phone that you can read its values from, and port that to your epic.
It is not a guarantee that all CDMA carriers will work with 100% things functioning correctly, thus not all carriers go through the trouble of doing OTA programming to phones that aren't natively theirs. Although some do at least give you the needed programming settings, you may get lucky and find guides that other people have wrote up that are tedious, but good to follow. Cutting you the hours of work it took to write the guides, just so you can follow it with everything working in like 30 mins of your own time.

Can i switch to a Japanese carrier?

I see this as unlikely, but would i be able to bring my phone to japan and place it on one of their carriers? Ive read they use cdma, but how much does that matter when it comes to radios or bands? I just bought this phone and found out a week later i will be moving there in november. Not too happy about this since i paid retail for this beast.

It's called unlocking and basically unlocks your phone so it can use any carrier. Now it's illegal in the US but call up your provider ask and for the unlock code anyway. Say you have to go there in a couple of day and you need to use the phone. Normally they'll give it to you via email and the instructions are included in the email. All you would have to do after you unlock the phone is replace the sim card and you'll all good to go. Now don't go online and buy the unlock codes from websites because most of them are scams and even though some might work, its not worth giving them your credit card number and then be in deep yogurt. Hoped this helped

You can probably get kddi mobile in japan to add your esn for you. I'm almost positive they use the same 3g frequency as sprint, however I doubt you'll be able to get lte.

If kddi won't add the esn, you could get a cheap phone thru them and flash your note with cdma ws or find another mvno that will add it. Now that sprint and softbank are looking at a partnership I think softbanks carrier's will accept sprint phones for Americans that come over without too much hassle. Japan has a large cdma network (largest outside of US) and use the same frequencys and sprint as vzw so 3g should be no problem and neither should finding someone to add your esn over there. They're pretty good about letting Americans use their own devices when they come over.
