HTC Desire Z T-mobile branding... - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
I am new to all of this so forgive any ignorance or me being seemingly stupid!
I bought an unlocked T-Mobile G2 (HTC Desire Z) off ebay. I would like to put a stock ROM on it from HTC, however i cannot use HTC Sync, it refuses to recognise my phone. Only as a Mass Storage Device. I've tried the generic drivers suggested somewhere else, it just does not work.
What would be my steps to get it to an UNBRANDED Htc Desire Z, as in the lastest ROM from Htc? I'm not familiar with rooting etc, so it would need to be a beginners guide, apologies. Links would be good etc, basically anything to help me out at all! Plus it is all English (united states), so phone numbers are in US format, where i want UK. Not a big deal but when you are used to 07000123456, and you suddenly see 070-001-23456 it just isn't right, for me obviously.
Anyway i hope i've explained what i'd like to do. Any help with this is very much appreciated.
Regards.

you need to do 2 things... first find out whether your phone is T Mobile G2 or htc desire Z......
T Mobile G2 has T mobile branding on the front glass panel and it says G2 on back battery cover....
Desire Z has no Branding on Front Glass panel and its battery Cover says HTC not G2....
both sets have different stock roms and putting one rom on other can potentially brick your phone.....
and after you conclude whether its a desire Z or G2 find out whether its rooted or not and if its S-off or does it have Eng-Hboot.....
if you want totally factory software you need to undo all those... that is getting Stock hboot if you have Eng-hboot.....
go Back to S-on if your S-off
and unroot if your rooted....
only than you can apply the factory stock rom and use the wireless updates ......
for all this i suggest you read the wiki carefully..... here is the link
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=HTC_Vision
there is no substitute for carefully reading and understanding the Wiki.... it gives all essential steps to root and how to unroot..... to s-Off and how to get back to S-on.... and finally to install Eng-hboot and to get back Stock hboot.....
read it.... prefreably more than once ... than decide your course of action... than if your confident do it... otherwise discuss your case in detail over here in Q & A section.... some senior member would help you out in either saying yup all steps look good go ahead... or say no your doing it woring do it this way...
hope it helps

Hi and thanks for the reply.
Yes it is a T-Mobile G2, it has the logo on the glass and on the battery plate. I shall do some reading. it does look as though it has original hboot, as i found when holding power & vol down button.
Regards.

the question: is my HTC Desire is locked version cuz it has the orange logo on the back side ?
My Desire is also Orange UK branded (black one, with the logo on the battery cover...) and it was locked. But I unlocked it and installed generic WWE ROM.

how 2 unlock ....n do i need 2 do that cuz my phone is working w any sim now...
If it works with any SIM already, then it's unlocked (mine was locked, so I had to unlock it).
In that case, your Desire is only branded. You see the orange logo when it boots up, right? If that doesn't bother you, then keep it. If it bothers you, then install generic ROM (you can find them in the Desire Android Development forum).

thanks a lot
you will still need a goldcard to install generic rom
i also got my phone unlocked through htcunlock website. now it just the branded one with orange. so this means that i need a goldcard to intall any rom on it? say for example i want to install Pays Desire ROM, i need goldcard to do so?
please help as i seriously want to install rom
thanks
The way I understand it, since you own branded phone, you still need to pass CID (sd card ID) check in order to install new rom, and you can do it with goldcard
Yes, I had to use goldcard on my branded desire to install a generic ROM.
tried with goldcard but after 45 attempts i gave up completely

yep, he forgot to root it first
no i didnt forgot to root. i tried each and every step over and over again, as told here in the forums and also at modaco... but wasnt able to. can someone please post a guide for doing the same? an easy one.... step by step guide with links to the required files.
you need to provide step by step details - what did you do, and where it stucked
I'd also like to put a generic HTC ROM on my Orange Desire.... I found flashing winmo phones easy... but I cant find any Andriod noob guides that really explain how to do it easily enough.... I dont even know what rooting is to be honest!

Put in the Goldcard and then run the official RUU (you can get one from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=6703172&postcount=1)
It should let you install the stock 2.1. Then connect to wifi, go to settings->About Phone->System software updates and hit Check Now.
I did it that way, worked for me.
Thank you for the reply,
How can I be sure what is the ROM RUU that I need?
Hi AndroHero,
Can you please link me to the rooted versions you mentioned...

I used the WWE version (Link: http://shipped-roms.com/shipped/Bra...00.28U_4.06.00.02_2_release_126984_signed.exe). When i booted the 2.1 rom after going back to stock, I got options to choose the carrier so it could apply the internet and mms settings. Am on Voda UK. Didnn want to install the Voda ROM as i think voda always release the updates much later than the official releases. After setting up the 2.1, I did update and it worked.
Hi,
1. While installation i got an error message 171 (connection lost), it was waiting for the bootloader when it threw the error
2. I retried the whole process twice and the same thing happened.
Can any one assist me?
Thanks ahead.

Reboot the phone in fastboot mode, i think its press and hold the volume down button as you switch the phone on. then use volume keys to select fastboot and select it with the power button. When you leave this on there, run the RUU and it should work. WITH A GOLDCARD (IMPORTANT).
My desire is unlocked, why do I need a GOLDCARD?
I did exactly what you suggested. I moved it to fastboot but I still get the same
ERROR[171]:USB CONNECTION ERROR
This happens after the PC restart the device so it is not a 'physical Connection' issue.
I have my phone unlocked and the SIM working. From what I read, I need goldcard if I wan't to unclock my SIM...
Please advise
I successfully installed the RUU ROM, but I'm not getting the 2.2 OTA... What should I Do?
My phone is unbranded and unlocked, do I still need a gold card to restore to factory state for warranty purposes?

If you purchased the Desire and it was on an x.xx.405.x software version then you don't need a gold card.
Don't people bother to actually absorb information as this is pretty n00b stuff...
I keep offering to help out with FAQs because this sort of information is not clearly stated. But thanks for letting me know. And I presume HTC read this forum and would know our tricks but apparently its still not a problem.

How would anyone know what version of the software his phone had when he purchased it? I, for instance, knew nothing of the "rooting world" when I got my unbranded unlocked desire, so now, after the OTA upgrade, I don't think I can retrieve that information: am I correct?
In order to absorb information, someone has to give it to you. The process is long (for some longer maybe), but I'm sure you were a n00b once and I hope nobody treated you this way.
Luca
That is correct but if you'd read all threads/information logic would dictate that perhaps it's wise to make a note of what it comes with out the box and make sure you have a back up route in case things go pear shaped/need to be reversed. If all you've done is root the phone and not flashed a ROM then you can still check but if you're now on a custom ROM then you're kinda screwed (unless you just wanna be on an unbranded ROM then you can obviously so this).
Easy way of at least finding out if you're branded or not is to just try and flash a stock WWE RUU without a gold card - if it completes then you're unbranded
Yes, I was a n00b once (Android n00b April this year) but I didn't ask any questions - I just lurked and read other posts and learnt by others mistakes and only asked if I wasn't sure what I was doing. I've had previous mobile phones and so knew about checking version numbers so always make sure I know what I have before trying anything like rooting (or the equivalent term for other makes)
Thank you Eddie.
As a matter of fact, I haven't rooted the phone yet: still in the info gathering stage as I just purchased the phone a month ago. I come from "stupid" phones so never had this problem/opportunity before.
I know for a fact that my phone is not branded, but I don't know:
1) which is the software + radio I should download to restore my phone in case I don't like what I get with rooting;
2) which rom to install: in this specific case, the more you read, the more you get confused. I read some people installing the same rom and one saying it is slower than Luancher Pro + stock rom, others that claim that it is faster than anything they've ever tried (and, mind you, they are talking about the same rom!)
3) last but not least, all guides I found in Italian are relative to using unrevoked with windows 7, while I still run xp and it seems that xp poses some additional problems. I just created a virtual machine on my pc to start using ubuntu, but I never even seen the thing!
However, thanks for the help and sorry about being a little snappish in my previous post. I guess we all approach this problem with different attitudes: some would like it to be a real one-click easy procedure and so keep on asking until they find somebody who does it for them!
Ciao
Luca
Yeah I agree to anti-n00b remarks are getting really old. I'm sure many of us have tried searching threads and doing the right thing, so can we all just get over it? I've offered 6 times now to help create FAQs and not one of the anti-n00bs has offered to help.
Anyway, so I understand then that for those with unbranded / unlocked phones it is a simple matter to restore to factory state. Just thinking in case the USB connector broke or something, which worries me a lot because often connections are rather wobbly although I'm not sure how much that has to do with cheap cables or what.

[Q] Newbie Desire owner - Rooting my device.

Hi
I just got hold of my new HTC Desire the other day and have to admit it is a fekkin great bit of kit!
I have some questions tho, please excuse my ignorance of the subject as I am in virgin territory.
I desperately want to be able to connect a Wii remote to my Desire and after watching a video on YouTube I found this is possible only on a rooted device. After some research I have found out that by rooting my phone I will void any warrantee that comes with it.
Once the device has been rooted is it possible to do a system restore to factory settings just in case? And if this is possible I'm assuming HTC will still be able to verify if the device was rooted (in case I try taking it back to them).
Any help/advice would be apprecietd.
Regards
Once you have rooted the Desire you can unroot it back to stock. HTC can't tell the difference.

Thanks Fido, most appreciated.
I don't suppose you know anywhere with details on how to unroot your device? I'm assuming you would need to keep an 'image' of the original software backed up somewhere...

Unrooting my device
Just done some research on how to unroot my device. Most of it seems pretty straight forward, however the part where you have to download the 'original RUU' is where I'm lost. What the heck is an RUU? And where do I get the original one for my phone? I am on the O2 network in the UK if that helps...

[Q] Un root HTC Bravo...

First off, Yes I have searched more than this site for an answer to the point where my handset would not do anything but go into the recovery menu.
What I want to do is put stock HTC Android on my Desire.
Currently it is rooted but has to be un rooted to go onto works E Mail server. Yes I know it makes no difference but my employer insist on official firmware on handsets.
The handset is a GSM HTC Desire (Bravo)
BRAVO PVT1 SHIP 2-ON
HBOOT-093.0001
CLOCKWORKMOD RECOVERY v2.5.0.7
I have tried several RUU's only to be told of a boot loader error.
Can some one please tell me how this is done?
I asked my network and they could not help so unless some one can help me im going to have to ask HTC.
THANKS in advance
RICK

Thanks for you input mate
Hmmm,
How would they know if the HTC Sense ROM just happened to be rooted. One could argue that the ROM was a valid HTC ROM. I know it's semantics but ...
The "About phone" would still show HTC as the ROM.
There must already be a variety of ROMs on HTC desires already used in your company.
The Clockwork recovery would give it away mate.

This might work for you Not sure if you have tried it but try again
WAIT, BEFORE YOU START, CREATE A GOLDCARD. IT IS VERY NECESSARY. THINGS WILL GO WRONG IF YOU DONT.
Firstly, download this file. http://dl.dropbox.com/u/13240777/Desire Downgrade.ZIP
Extract the files.
Run the win-down.bat file.
Follow on screen instructions.
After the process is completed, Head to the root of your SD card and check if there is a file named PB99IMG, there should be one.
Secondly, disconnect your phone and turn it off. (MAKE SURE PHONE IS CHARGED TO AT LEAST 70%++
After that boot up your phone while pressing the volume down button and the power button.
The bootloader should be checking for files after awhile and once it found the file that is supposed to be in the root of your sd card, press the volume up button (NOT EXACTLY SURE, SHOULD BE THE ONE THAT SAYS YES AND CONTINUE)
It should be writing files to your phone. and replaces everything. E.G: HBOOT, RECOVERY,RADIO and such.
It should be writing files successfully and then it would ask you to reboot. Continue with the reboot and you should be having your Desire back to stock. Perfect.
PLEASE KEEP IN MIND THAT THERE ARE RISKS INVOLVED LIKE FAILURE OF WRITING TO THE HBOOT. PLEASE REMEMBER TO FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS. MAINLY, DO NOT BLAME ME FOR ANYTHING THAT GOES WRONG.
FINALLY, YOU SHOULD BE READING EVERYTHING UP TO HERE AND THAT YOU MUST HAVE A GOLDCARD (A GOLD SD CARD)
Hope this helps you and please ask if you have further questions. PM me if the questions cannot be answered here. Good Luck

Yup, "ERROR 140:BOOTLOADER VERSION ERROR" The only time you can put a lower bootloader version is when you have a gold card.
The above method posted by Shockem should work. A second method is to just put a gold card in your device and get the latest WWE RUU. Check my signature for the file. Once a gold card is in, it will work. Note that this method unbrands your device, so if you a branded device with visible logos, dont go for this.
Third method is by flashing the OTA zip file you got from your operator if you have it. Again gold card should be in the device. But is is likely that it may also work without since CustID is same. Advantage: preserves branding
So do I still need a gold card even though my device is rooted?

Certainly.........
Point is you say you've tried several RUUs and they dont work..Hence we have to assume it's a branded phone. HTC even brands some phones with the brand HTC (Eg Indian HTCs). To unroot a branded HTC, you need a goldcard.
i had same problem, i was trying for days till i rememberd that i can downgrade hboot, install android 2.1 and ota update froyo. ( if your desire wasnt branded you dont need goldcard). problem was that i couldnt find stock froyo, only eclair
this thread helped me :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=768256
i hope it helps
Point is some people (including me in the past) dont realize that they have a branded phone. There may not be any visible branding. So better be safe than sorry, by creating a goldcard.. Once the device if bricked, you cant (in most cases) create a goldcard
Thank you all so much.
I'll be doing this tonight.

In the UK? Look for a HTC WWE RUU. A quick google search should help you =)
Be warned though, this will wipe all data, unroot you & (I think) return you to S-ON (unable to flash custom ROMs)

That would be perfect, and yes it's UK, it's my daughters phone so custom roms wouldn't be needed. I am guessing that it would need rooting first to get the Rom on, also I have read threads regarding radio's, goldcards etc, do I need to worry about that or will the ruu have everything I need?
Thanks for your response.
