the question: is my HTC Desire is locked version cuz it has the orange logo on the back side ?
My Desire is also Orange UK branded (black one, with the logo on the battery cover...) and it was locked. But I unlocked it and installed generic WWE ROM.

how 2 unlock ....n do i need 2 do that cuz my phone is working w any sim now...
If it works with any SIM already, then it's unlocked (mine was locked, so I had to unlock it).
In that case, your Desire is only branded. You see the orange logo when it boots up, right? If that doesn't bother you, then keep it. If it bothers you, then install generic ROM (you can find them in the Desire Android Development forum).

thanks a lot
you will still need a goldcard to install generic rom
i also got my phone unlocked through htcunlock website. now it just the branded one with orange. so this means that i need a goldcard to intall any rom on it? say for example i want to install Pays Desire ROM, i need goldcard to do so?
please help as i seriously want to install rom
thanks
The way I understand it, since you own branded phone, you still need to pass CID (sd card ID) check in order to install new rom, and you can do it with goldcard
Yes, I had to use goldcard on my branded desire to install a generic ROM.
tried with goldcard but after 45 attempts i gave up completely
You must be doing something wrong.
Would you share with us at what step you get stuck? Maybe someone can help...

yep, he forgot to root it first
no i didnt forgot to root. i tried each and every step over and over again, as told here in the forums and also at modaco... but wasnt able to. can someone please post a guide for doing the same? an easy one.... step by step guide with links to the required files.
you need to provide step by step details - what did you do, and where it stucked
I'd also like to put a generic HTC ROM on my Orange Desire.... I found flashing winmo phones easy... but I cant find any Andriod noob guides that really explain how to do it easily enough.... I dont even know what rooting is to be honest!
Try to follow this guide:

Hi guys, I just bought a HTC Hero off ebay and I can't wait to get my hands on it.
In the meantime I'm trying to read a lot about customizing my Hero (I previously own an ELF and I'm familiar to ROM flashing and stuff).
Now after reading a bit I'm starting to know a bit more, but there is so much information it's hard to get the full picture.
So here it's my situation: the phone comes from orange UK so will be branded. What I want to do is remove all the branding and then flash a nice working ROM.
Here are the steps I got, let me know if I forgot anything or if anything is unecessary (for instance do I need to unbrand befor flashing):
1 - install nandroid and make a backup
2 - Root
3 - unbrand
4 - flash (modaco's rom seems to be a hit)
thanks for your help
Geeum
seems to be correct
unbrand ?
Thanks. The question I have is: do I need to unbrand before installing modaco's ROM ? Or will the modaco ROM unbrand it anyway ?

It will unbrand anyway, it did with my Orange one.
What does that unbrand mean? That it will be sim lock free?
I'm no expert but I belive you root your phone which will put Nandroid on then you do the backup. Well thats what I did anyway.
Hello All,

Connect your mobile to your pc and run RUU_Bravo_HTC_WWE_1.21.405.2_Radio_32.36.00.28U_4. 06.00.02_2_release_126984_signed.exe
from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=695667 . That is just a stock rom and i don't think you need to root it before you can install it. But before you do make sure that your phone is not branded.

when it loads up do you get the HTC welcome screen or a T-Mobile/Orange/O2/etc screen??
I think it is unbranded, so that is good. But maybe you should wait for someone else to join into this discussion, because i'm not fully sure and don't want you to end up with a phone which is locked.
I M Getting HTC Welcome screen....

i don't wanna root my device....can i flash it with official RUU as said by Flaggie???
Just remember that with rooting you don't have any new languages, you still need to flash a custom rom. You could just first flash a generic rom (which you don't need to root for just connect your phone to your pc and run the .exe) from the xda website I mentioned before and see if you like the regular rom.

Good good, its all about the Custom stuff

give it a read and when you feel comfy with rooting go with it, and if you get stuck just add onto the end of that topic, simples!
Dear Ones...
I tried to update firmware with generic ROM but got the error....
Can you help me with this please ???
Make sure your phone is in Bootloader,,, then into Recovery mode
The 170 error is normal. At this point your desire is in bootloader mode and you just need to reboot your pc and re run the RUU.
If tour trying to downgrade - I don't think you can without root. I tried last night and It fails. I'm on 1.21 but my phone is now network locked and as its only 2 weeks old the imei is not listed yet on any database to undo the network lock.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
Thx all for support...but once again i ended up with same error.....
i have HTC Sync installed and all other thuings i had taken care while updating...no result
Can i have complete detail...i mean step by step procedure..here or anywhere written....
Don't mind...i m asking more but....i don't wanna take more risk....without knowing more facts....
and i am searching here and googleing too....FYI
thx again....
Weird for me it just worked. Do you have the android software development kit installed? http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html
Hi all,
I am new to all of this so forgive any ignorance or me being seemingly stupid!
I bought an unlocked T-Mobile G2 (HTC Desire Z) off ebay. I would like to put a stock ROM on it from HTC, however i cannot use HTC Sync, it refuses to recognise my phone. Only as a Mass Storage Device. I've tried the generic drivers suggested somewhere else, it just does not work.
What would be my steps to get it to an UNBRANDED Htc Desire Z, as in the lastest ROM from Htc? I'm not familiar with rooting etc, so it would need to be a beginners guide, apologies. Links would be good etc, basically anything to help me out at all! Plus it is all English (united states), so phone numbers are in US format, where i want UK. Not a big deal but when you are used to 07000123456, and you suddenly see 070-001-23456 it just isn't right, for me obviously.
Anyway i hope i've explained what i'd like to do. Any help with this is very much appreciated.
Regards.

you need to do 2 things... first find out whether your phone is T Mobile G2 or htc desire Z......
T Mobile G2 has T mobile branding on the front glass panel and it says G2 on back battery cover....
Desire Z has no Branding on Front Glass panel and its battery Cover says HTC not G2....
both sets have different stock roms and putting one rom on other can potentially brick your phone.....
and after you conclude whether its a desire Z or G2 find out whether its rooted or not and if its S-off or does it have Eng-Hboot.....
if you want totally factory software you need to undo all those... that is getting Stock hboot if you have Eng-hboot.....
go Back to S-on if your S-off
and unroot if your rooted....
only than you can apply the factory stock rom and use the wireless updates ......
for all this i suggest you read the wiki carefully..... here is the link
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=HTC_Vision
there is no substitute for carefully reading and understanding the Wiki.... it gives all essential steps to root and how to unroot..... to s-Off and how to get back to S-on.... and finally to install Eng-hboot and to get back Stock hboot.....
read it.... prefreably more than once ... than decide your course of action... than if your confident do it... otherwise discuss your case in detail over here in Q & A section.... some senior member would help you out in either saying yup all steps look good go ahead... or say no your doing it woring do it this way...
hope it helps
Hi and thanks for the reply.
Yes it is a T-Mobile G2, it has the logo on the glass and on the battery plate. I shall do some reading. it does look as though it has original hboot, as i found when holding power & vol down button.
Regards.

Couldn't really find anything about this, but I have a problem and I appreciate all help, thanks.
I really really need to install the Orange RRU on my HTC Desire HD as it's being returned to Orange, but because it's my second handset I have returned to them they are going to inspect it for any 'software modifications' (they didn't say that, but its obvious) and I really need a flash back to it. I have debranded my device at the moment, but I am not rooted, all help is greatly thanked.
Follow the link in my Sig and go to RUUs you find the latest Orange ROM there. FYI I got my DHD from Orange the first week it was launched, it was supplied unlocked & unbranded.

Right, I have that downloading now, just to double check, I have Software Version 1.32.405.6, will I still be able to flash this RRU, as I know sometimes there are problems if the Software version is newer than the RRU is flashing onto the phone.
Yeah you should be fine, going from stock 1.32 to Orange 1.84.

Do you have Radio S-OFF & SuperCID? If not try using the tool in the Dev section. You should be fine then.

Hey,
I've already read through similar threads.
But as my situation differs from the other threads, I've decided to open my own thread.
Situation
- My brothers Desire isn't rooted
- He alwaysupgraded OTA (Android 2.2 hbot 0.93)
- Today my brother asked me rooting his phone too
What we've done:
We followed that guide until step 13. In other words: Basically we've done nothing except installing a driver
However:
Since then my brothers Desire stucks on boot. It's even impossible to enter the recovery mode, he can only access his bootloader menue
He already tried to put it into the freezer - without success
Suggestions?
thx

Can you get into fastboot ? Back button (not volume down) + power button.
Hi Paul,
thx for your quick answer! Yes, I can get into fastboot
Cool. First of all we need to know if you phone was branded (it had a ROM made for a provider. Was you phone network locked or it had any logos ? Do you have any idea ?
You have to download one of these RUUs. After downloading start in fastboot and run the exe file.
Here is a tried solution: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=14137822&postcount=9
Cool! So far the solution sounds pretty easy
As he bought the Desire with a contract, it's likely branded.

So it's possible that his phone isn't branded too. I'm not able to match one of these ROMs with A1
