[Q] Newbie Desire owner - Rooting my device. - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi
I just got hold of my new HTC Desire the other day and have to admit it is a fekkin great bit of kit!
I have some questions tho, please excuse my ignorance of the subject as I am in virgin territory.
I desperately want to be able to connect a Wii remote to my Desire and after watching a video on YouTube I found this is possible only on a rooted device. After some research I have found out that by rooting my phone I will void any warrantee that comes with it.
Once the device has been rooted is it possible to do a system restore to factory settings just in case? And if this is possible I'm assuming HTC will still be able to verify if the device was rooted (in case I try taking it back to them).
Any help/advice would be apprecietd.
Regards

Once you have rooted the Desire you can unroot it back to stock. HTC can't tell the difference.

Thanks Fido, most appreciated.
I don't suppose you know anywhere with details on how to unroot your device? I'm assuming you would need to keep an 'image' of the original software backed up somewhere...
Regards

You just flash with the WWE or Europe ROM. Either Froyo or the latest Eclair.

Unrooting my device
Just done some research on how to unroot my device. Most of it seems pretty straight forward, however the part where you have to download the 'original RUU' is where I'm lost. What the heck is an RUU? And where do I get the original one for my phone? I am on the O2 network in the UK if that helps...

You need this my friend...
O2 UK Stock ROM - Link seem very slow, server issues maybe?? Be patient, though
(RUU = Rom Upgrade Utility, it's the ROM in an EXE file that you run in Windows to completely update your ROM)

Thanks Eddy
However I just tried the link and it doesn't work, would u be able to provide an alternetive one please??

Put in the Goldcard and then run the official RUU (you can get one from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=6703172&postcount=1)
It should let you install the stock 2.1. Then connect to wifi, go to settings->About Phone->System software updates and hit Check Now.
I did it that way, worked for me.
Thank you for the reply,
How can I be sure what is the ROM RUU that I need?
Hi AndroHero,
Can you please link me to the rooted versions you mentioned...

I used the WWE version (Link: http://shipped-roms.com/shipped/Bra...00.28U_4.06.00.02_2_release_126984_signed.exe). When i booted the 2.1 rom after going back to stock, I got options to choose the carrier so it could apply the internet and mms settings. Am on Voda UK. Didnn want to install the Voda ROM as i think voda always release the updates much later than the official releases. After setting up the 2.1, I did update and it worked.
Hi,
1. While installation i got an error message 171 (connection lost), it was waiting for the bootloader when it threw the error
2. I retried the whole process twice and the same thing happened.
Can any one assist me?
Thanks ahead.

Reboot the phone in fastboot mode, i think its press and hold the volume down button as you switch the phone on. then use volume keys to select fastboot and select it with the power button. When you leave this on there, run the RUU and it should work. WITH A GOLDCARD (IMPORTANT).
My desire is unlocked, why do I need a GOLDCARD?
I did exactly what you suggested. I moved it to fastboot but I still get the same
ERROR[171]:USB CONNECTION ERROR
This happens after the PC restart the device so it is not a 'physical Connection' issue.
I have my phone unlocked and the SIM working. From what I read, I need goldcard if I wan't to unclock my SIM...
Please advise
I successfully installed the RUU ROM, but I'm not getting the 2.2 OTA... What should I Do?
My phone is unbranded and unlocked, do I still need a gold card to restore to factory state for warranty purposes?
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
If you purchased the Desire and it was on an x.xx.405.x software version then you don't need a gold card.
Don't people bother to actually absorb information as this is pretty n00b stuff...
I keep offering to help out with FAQs because this sort of information is not clearly stated. But thanks for letting me know. And I presume HTC read this forum and would know our tricks but apparently its still not a problem.

How would anyone know what version of the software his phone had when he purchased it? I, for instance, knew nothing of the "rooting world" when I got my unbranded unlocked desire, so now, after the OTA upgrade, I don't think I can retrieve that information: am I correct?
In order to absorb information, someone has to give it to you. The process is long (for some longer maybe), but I'm sure you were a n00b once and I hope nobody treated you this way.
Luca
That is correct but if you'd read all threads/information logic would dictate that perhaps it's wise to make a note of what it comes with out the box and make sure you have a back up route in case things go pear shaped/need to be reversed. If all you've done is root the phone and not flashed a ROM then you can still check but if you're now on a custom ROM then you're kinda screwed (unless you just wanna be on an unbranded ROM then you can obviously so this).
Easy way of at least finding out if you're branded or not is to just try and flash a stock WWE RUU without a gold card - if it completes then you're unbranded
Yes, I was a n00b once (Android n00b April this year) but I didn't ask any questions - I just lurked and read other posts and learnt by others mistakes and only asked if I wasn't sure what I was doing. I've had previous mobile phones and so knew about checking version numbers so always make sure I know what I have before trying anything like rooting (or the equivalent term for other makes)
Thank you Eddie.
As a matter of fact, I haven't rooted the phone yet: still in the info gathering stage as I just purchased the phone a month ago. I come from "stupid" phones so never had this problem/opportunity before.
I know for a fact that my phone is not branded, but I don't know:
1) which is the software + radio I should download to restore my phone in case I don't like what I get with rooting;
2) which rom to install: in this specific case, the more you read, the more you get confused. I read some people installing the same rom and one saying it is slower than Luancher Pro + stock rom, others that claim that it is faster than anything they've ever tried (and, mind you, they are talking about the same rom!)
3) last but not least, all guides I found in Italian are relative to using unrevoked with windows 7, while I still run xp and it seems that xp poses some additional problems. I just created a virtual machine on my pc to start using ubuntu, but I never even seen the thing!
However, thanks for the help and sorry about being a little snappish in my previous post. I guess we all approach this problem with different attitudes: some would like it to be a real one-click easy procedure and so keep on asking until they find somebody who does it for them!
Ciao
Luca
Yeah I agree to anti-n00b remarks are getting really old. I'm sure many of us have tried searching threads and doing the right thing, so can we all just get over it? I've offered 6 times now to help create FAQs and not one of the anti-n00bs has offered to help.
Anyway, so I understand then that for those with unbranded / unlocked phones it is a simple matter to restore to factory state. Just thinking in case the USB connector broke or something, which worries me a lot because often connections are rather wobbly although I'm not sure how much that has to do with cheap cables or what.

[Q] Two questions

I'm on T-Mobile UK and getting the DHD soon. I've done quite a bit of reading on rooting and I will definitely do it for the added benefits to my phone. I have two questions surrounding the subject...
1. The VISIONary page says to have a 'safety net' ready before attempting to permaroot. Can someone tell me, or point me in the right direction (Links would be nice) to preparing a copy of the stock ROM to reinstall if something goes wrong? If there are any guides please share =)
2. If I needed to send it for repairs would the only thing I really need to do is to use VISIONary to Unroot the phone? What about any apps that required rooting? Would they have to be un-installed first? I assume that in such a scenario once I got the phone back just re-root it again.
Hi and welcome to XDA.

One such "safety net" is to ensure you have all the correct drivers installed on your host computer, just install HTC Sync 3 and it will take care of that. Also download the correct RUU (Rom Update Utility) for your particular region & carrier. You can use this to revert your DHD to the state it was when you took it out of the box.
Here you can find the --> Desire HD Files. HTC Sync will come on the SD Card of your new phone.

Using the above RUU's your DHD will be factory restored. Everything you did will be reverted back. All the apps you installed will be removed. There would be technically no way HTC would know you rooted your DHD.

Thanks for the answer.
How do I know what RUU to use? From my glance I would assume mine would be the: TMO DE 1.39.111. Also know how I can confirm if it's the same version as mine or older? thanks.
If your getting it from T-Mobile UK then you will need a TMO-UK RUU, sadly there isn't one available yet. The TMO DE is for T-Mobile Germany.
You could use a generic HTC RUU, just find the latest version. If you are planning to root, S-OFF, etc... then avoid this --> RUU_Ace_HTC_WWE_1.72.405.3_R_Radio_12.28e.60.140f_ 26.04.02.17_M2_release. As this will lock down your DHD.
Thanks again. Though I'm not sure if I shouldn't just wait for a TMO-UK RUU to make an appearance before I root my phone.....Would a generic HTC RUU work for my current firmware? Also wouldn't a generic RUU be a problem if I tried to send it back for repairs?
Oh also I heard mention of a gold card a couple of times here and there. Would this be needed for using an RUU?
No problem at all,
Yes a generic HTC RUU would work. I got my DHD from Orange UK, as it was from the first batch I received it unlocked & unbranded, just a generic HTC DHD. Although carriers will supply you with a branded & locked handset 99% of the time, people still get generic HTC handsets.
If it went in for repairs, T-Mobile will just replace the software for their own anyway.
A goldcard is a modified SD Card that will allow you to flash unsigned ROM's to a locked (S-ON) handset.

[Q]Orange UK 2.2 Froyo ROM[Q]

Couldn't really find anything about this, but I have a problem and I appreciate all help, thanks.
I really really need to install the Orange RRU on my HTC Desire HD as it's being returned to Orange, but because it's my second handset I have returned to them they are going to inspect it for any 'software modifications' (they didn't say that, but its obvious) and I really need a flash back to it. I have debranded my device at the moment, but I am not rooted, all help is greatly thanked.
Follow the link in my Sig and go to RUUs you find the latest Orange ROM there. FYI I got my DHD from Orange the first week it was launched, it was supplied unlocked & unbranded.

Right, I have that downloading now, just to double check, I have Software Version 1.32.405.6, will I still be able to flash this RRU, as I know sometimes there are problems if the Software version is newer than the RRU is flashing onto the phone.
Yeah you should be fine, going from stock 1.32 to Orange 1.84.

Do you have Radio S-OFF & SuperCID? If not try using the tool in the Dev section. You should be fine then.

In the UK? Look for a HTC WWE RUU. A quick google search should help you =)
Be warned though, this will wipe all data, unroot you & (I think) return you to S-ON (unable to flash custom ROMs)

That would be perfect, and yes it's UK, it's my daughters phone so custom roms wouldn't be needed. I am guessing that it would need rooting first to get the Rom on, also I have read threads regarding radio's, goldcards etc, do I need to worry about that or will the ruu have everything I need?
Thanks for your response.

If you're on Lollipop, you can use sunshine to unlock and flash away. If on MM, you have to downgrade to LP, and then use sunshine to unlock (this is a cost of 25 USD). There is a thread for the downgrade here in the Verizon forum. As for a rom, I highly recommend LeeDroid, as he makes roms for all M9s, and he is based out of the UK. For that, just go to the HTC One M9 main forum, not the Verizon forum. I'm currently running it and it is fantastic.
Edit: Sorry, totally somehow thought you were locked. Anyway, just make sure you have the latest TWRP and flash any rom you want, but you'll find more activity here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/one-m9
Roms based on stock (I recommend for stability, signal, and camera) are under "One (M9) Android Development."

Here's the link for the rom which has instructions for for installation: http://forum.xda-developers.com/one-m9/development/rom-leedroid-one-m9-v7-0-0-rc1-march-t3068468
I can't remember off the top of my head if your recovery is new enough (I believe it is), but here is the thread for TWRP: http://forum.xda-developers.com/one-m9/orig-development/recovery-twrp-touch-recovery-t3066720
If you don't feel comfortable rebooting your phone into different modes and doing some command prompt codes, I'm not sure I'd recommend doing any of this though. Make sure you do your research and read, read, read. Maybe even search YouTube for examples of people flashing TWRP and such.
thank you sending the phone back, will buy a uk version
