For me, with Overclock.. it's EXCELLENT! I can have it in standby but still have background data going (push gmail, twitter apps, etc.) for days at a time and still have some juice left.
Just today with some admittedly light usage (but I did use it) I had battery use time of 12Hrs with over 70% left.
I'm using setvsel @
35 @ 400MHz
50 @ 800MHz
65 @ 1200MHz
CPU Icon is set to refresh every second and it's supposed to cap at Vsel 2 @ 10%. It's as stable as ever.. been running like this for weeks now. I'm taking note of how much I appreciate the excellent battery life I get because my Vibrant has been getting really bad lately.
Running Barebones 1.3 with
19 @ 300Mhz
35 @ 600MHz
52 @ 1000Mhz
Battery Life is excellent - more than 48h without recharging is no problem.
I get 2 days of standby with heavy texting, surfing over wifi, calling and some gaming. DEFY battery performance is one the best amongst all Android phones.

Undervolting your cpu can harm your hardware real badly. I've had my defy stopped working and shut down completely in the past so i won't recommend you OC or UV
EDIT: tho i still undervolt but 19 vsel is too low for 300 mhz, raise it upto 26 or so
Yes, 19 vsel maybe too low, at least in my case. When I ran the stability test, anything less than 24 would hang the phone after some 10 minutes. 24 is fine in my case but I set it at 26 to give a little more juice.
LOL. Why the hell, should undervolting harm the cpu? Undervolting improves your cpu's lifetime, instead! Less voltage means less stress (heat) and less leak currents for the cpu.
Well, it's true that you might have some instability issues, when the voltage is too low. As soon as you experience so, you can raise the voltage a little, until you have a stable cpu. I've been using undervolting for my PC's CPUs for several years.

Never had any problems with my settings, some in this forum use even lower voltages.

The battery life on the Defy is absolutely amazing.
I can easily get between 2 and 3 days of normal usage and somewhere in the region of 4-5 if I use it very little.
I reckon if I switched off 3G, had the brightness down as low as possible and generally tried not to use the phone much, I could push a week.
Sadly, my Defy is 'in the shop' just now, damned earpiece.
What do you guys run on the background? I probably able to get 1.5 days on normal usage. Even after charging and no usage, I lose about 10 % after an hour or so.

It is impossible to get 1.5 day if defy uses 10% for 1 hour standby. Defy rounds 95% to 100%, and 94% to 90%. So it is possible that an apparent 10% drop is actually a 1% drop. You may install Motocharge to see the battery in 1% increment.
I'm happy to hear everyone getting excellent battery life. The DEFY is a truly unique Android phone.. I'm just afraid that us stateside won't get devices like this because of AT&T... the Bravo is a step below the DEFY just because it doesn't share the same faux-rugged water resistant build. I'm glad T-Mobile picked this one up, overclocked it's only a bit slower than my Vibrant in most operations.
Well I did a Quadrant benchmark 'standoff' with a colleague of mine which has a Samsung Galaxy S [EU version of the Vibrant] and I beat him with over 250 points [the Galaxy S did 975, my Defy did 1334], both running Froyo and the Defy being non-overclocked.
I've also noticed that his Galaxy S tends to hang & stutter from time to time. Regarding battery life, he carries his charger with him at all times, I do not, 'nuff said.
I also get ~1.5days of battery life.
I'm able to squeeze more than 80 hours of usage on a single charge running PaYs 5.0. Light to moderate use of WiFi/Data/GPS/BT, no background syncs and most apps firewalled except through WiFi.

i used circle battery widget and it does shows 1% increments. after 90%, it slows down in terms of usage.
i also forgot to mention that my defy sometime runs pretty hot at 35-38C, which i think accelerates the discharge
what about autobrightness? if is set it on, the battery drains much faster.
For me, with undervolt (800/46;600/30;300/18) I can use my phone to make calls, send sms, surf the web, run some apps, and run one a two games.
After 24h of that usage, I have 50% remaining.
a strange thing happened to me (sorry for my English):
Yesterday I installed the camera 360 that did not work it gave some error. Last night when I went to sleep (1-1.30) had 50% battery, in the morning (7.30-8) phone was dead. I put the phone to recharge, from 11 to 3 o'clock phone has reached 30% of battery so i put the phone to recharge again. Until 10 pm the phone has reached again 30% of battery so I decided to give him a factory reset. With 30% i did 100+ app backups with titanium pro and I gave factory reset, after the phone restore from factory reset surprise the battery show 60% ??? I did restore 100+ app and battery show 50%, I played about a half hour and still 50% battery??? what the hell happened??? 360 camera app has to do with rapid battery discharge???
- I use advance Task Manager droidwall, light <10%, original rom only rooted
- anyway Battery discharge I think is caused by the signal GSM of my operator's.
- anyway in the night i decided to kill the traffic and by that the battery shouldn't discharged hardly over night. right?
(Q) sometimes the touch screen it freezes in games so I have to put the phone in standby and come out of standby, and then the touch screen works again ... this happens to you to?

Hi,
I'm planning on buying a Desire HD, but just curious about battery life before I lay down a grand on it.
At the moment I have an HTC Hero, when they were in their heyday many people complained about the short life on them. I can get 2 days out of mine, with syncing over wifi enabled the whole time. I put the complaints down to people with background apps sucking CPU or too much twitter/facebook/whatever crap syncing as well.
Now most of the reports of poor Desire HD battery I life are from people on their first charge (who clearly don't understand the characteristics of Li-ion batteries), people who expect to be able to thrash the phone all day with the screen on without it dying and generally people who just don't sound like they know what they're talking about.
I know there are two bugs which peg the CPU at 100%, the one fixed by having debugging on and the calendar bug, which sounds like it can be fixed by clearing calendar data or leaving syncing off. I think these were affecting some of the people who were complaining about the short battery life.
So my question for Desire HD owners is, can you last at least 6 am till 10 pm with a bit of use (something like 10 min browsing, 20 min IM, email syncing all day, 1 hr music, 20 min calls) without it dying? Currently my Hero does this fine and a full day without a charge is a requirement for me.
Thanks.
Yes, if you set it up correctly. From your post it sounds like you know what your doing when setting it up.
Before i tried the battery calibration i was getting from 8am to 9pm with moderate usage. TBH i was put off by using it as I thought it would just die on me too soon.
After the calibration (search forum for it) i got from 8am to 4pm the following day where the 15% warning hit. So do the calibration and you'll be as happy as i now am with it. I never got my iPhone 4 to last that long!
Thanks for the info guys, exactly what I wanted to hear!
I haven't taken any precautions to save battery life and I am getting 25-26 hours on a full charge...and now having had the phone for 2-3 weeks it seems to be getting even better!! I've been getting 36 hours out of a full charge these past 3 days.
I do not turn wifi off. I have screen brightness on auto. Syncing lots of stuff hourly (even weather!). I use 3g when I go out but this is about 2-3 hours tops on week days cause I have wifi everywhere i go. battery life has never been an issue for me and I use my phone frequently...play games for 20-30 mins. watch videos via. skynews, listen to some music etc. etc.
As for the bugs...I do not have usb debugging turned on and I have never had the /INIT problem...perhaps it was fixed in the last update? and the calender bug...never had that problem either and I use my calander with google calander, facebook, holidays and person agenda.
I think you'll easily last a day with the usage you mention. As a rule, I think you normally get up to 4 hours display on usage off a charge (browsing, messaging, watching vids etc).
I'm travelling from Ireland to NZ on Monday, which will equate to 36 hours travelling with probably no access to a charge, and lots of time spent sitting around using my dhd. There's no way the phone will last right through, so have bought a 5000mAh USB battery pack for £20.

Well...I think I have had similar results....
flash one of the custom roms, with one of the OCUV kernels and setting max. speed to one of the UV speeds (mine is set to 1.1 Ghz which is UV 50mV), also setup useful profiles in Setcpu (I have set screen-off to use max 384 mhz - which does cause a 1-3 sec lag when screen is on again) and <20% battery etc...
of course, if you play heavily with your dhd you will not get these results, so you can put wifi on with this , but need to think of what you want to do, because using your DHD for 2 days, does require limited screen usage (imho, this uses a lot of battery)

even 2-4 hours whilst using it is terrible!!! When I got my HD and unpacked it I didn't put it down after a full charge and I got 8 and a half hours with non-stop heavy use.
I think you have a faulty battery!!

I too moved from a Hero to a DHD and I can say that with similar usage, the DHD loses to the Hero by a decent margin..maybe u might get a couple of hours less of usage compared to the Hero but the difference isn't very drastic
Moreover on the Hero I'm using CM6.1 Froyo overclocked and the DHD is on Sense, so logically speaking the Hero should get slightly better battery life on CM6.1 compared to Sense. I'm sure after rooting and flashing CM6.1 and undervolting/underclock the DHD, i'd get better battery life because the DHD is like much much faster than the Hero, so I'm sure even if i underclock it, it'll still be super fast.

The battery is 'fine' i'm using current widget to track and its performing to around 1100 mah which is not too far below spec. The problem is the current draw. In use i'm drawing 500 to 800 mA and in standby around 80 to 300 mA. These figures are consistent with the battery life I'm seeing and the battery working close to spec (1230mAh i think?)
There are lots of bundled apps like Maps running all the time in standby drawing current and I haven't yet figured out how to stop them. Stopping them with task manager just sees them restart with even bigger current draw.

Something is definitely wrong (as I'm sure you're aware) with only 9 hours on standby.
Out of interest, remove ALL widgets and see what difference it makes. Also, give us an example of what processes are running?
I would get rid of all task killers and also anything monitoring your system. Those themselves can draw more than you think.

wow well I'm no battery expert but it really sounds like something is not right there. I don't have any battery drain from apps in standby and I do use maps.
I got 1 day and 16 hours from a full charge today (just put it back on charge now).
Thats with wifi on for 31 hours (always on, doesnt sleep when the screen locks), 1 hour and 24 mins of talk time and the screen on for 4 hours and 5 mins.

thats definitely wrong somehow.. should never drain that much, perhaps it is because you let currentwidget drain it all the time
(na dont know why it is like that but it definitely is way too high)
official firmware, medium screen brightness, default sync widgets
heavy use: 12-15 hours
light use: 24 to 36 hours
this is how its been for me ever since the battery calibrated, needs around a week or use the battery calibration trick
I too have just moved from a Hero (running VillainRom 12) to the DHD (stock Sense over FroYo) and even though I have only had it a week, the battery easily lasts a whole day with the moderate use you describe. Unless I get stuck into a session of " Angry Birds ", which seems to kill the battery pretty fast. But ABs had the same affect on my Hero. Constant screen time on that beautiful 4.3" display sucks the battery. I find the same thing when using the DHD as an in-car gps. The warmth of the back of the case is testament to how much energy has been expended. So I connect to the car charger now. I have also bought a portable backup battery (plugs into the microUSB) just in case.
I don't regret spending NZD1000 on the DHD. My son is looking forward to inheriting the Hero.
Well I charged it up overnight when I got it, my first full day was today and I got 7 am till 8:30 pm using it almost constantly (quiet day at work). I don't know how people can run them flat a day with normal use. And I know it'll improve a lot after a few charge cycles.
It doesn't look like it's going to be much worse than my Hero.
Thanks for all the advice. I uninstalled all widgets and it improved a little. But still things like maps/maps sync were constantly burning juice and no way of stopping them running.
I installed Launcher Pro and can report that my battery life has approximately doubled. Typically i was getting 4 - 6 hrs use and sometimes only 2 (light use). Now getting between 8 and 12 hours of fairly heavy use. Its still not up to some of the figures others are reporting but Launcher Pro has helped a lot as all those constantly running apps that were draining my battery just dont start themselves up any more!

Hey,
This question has been asked a few times but with new roms comming out all the time I would like to ask again!
Currently I'm using baadnewz hd rom and the kernel that comes with it, using juice defended and setcpu, my phone will die by the time i go to sleep if it was at 100% when I wake up. This isn't good enough for me :/ I use my phone quite a bit.. Was looking for something a little better!
battery life
I use the latest stock rom with underclocking mod root and setcpu with some tweeks with sending around 200 texts 15 emails a couple tweets 1 hour talking and some doodle jump I get from six am to ten pm at 60% left.
What do you do on your phone playing games destroys battery life
I am on OpenDesire now, it seems a lot better. But still, I throw it on charge and in 1 hour it will charge 10%, but off charge it will drain 10% in 1 hour. It just seems so pathetic. People brag about 3 days battery life with their phones.
which eats up batt life more: games or surfing the net? I always thought it was the latter.
Also, what's the main difference between underclocking and undervolting? Won't underclocking mean a perpetually slower processing speed?
battery

I can get two days before dying if I just email text and an hour of calling, but agian how do you use your phone what's eating up your battery?
And with set CPU I set it to 800mhz and when battery is below 35% I set it to 600
At 600 MHz I notice the browser it slower if I have more than one windows open
But the best is when I lock my phone the CPU scales down to 224mhz to 386mhz or something and that were I noticed the best battery advantage
games like angery birds destroys battery browsing is less consuming than calling.
Just to a quick Google servh on how to extend android battery life its pretty basic, keep brightness at 20 % Bluetooth and wifi off when not using use less Widgets and use advanced task manager

used phone for a little but saw it drain fast
so i basically left it alone during work
so end of day comes i got 2 1/2 hrs screen and about 17 hours total on battery
screenshots attatched - dead trigger only had 27 min and poweramp only had 10
i think i got everything covered??

It doesn't make a huge difference what CPU editors you use, the screen is always going to be the biggest drain on the battery. Also, a 3% drop when you were sleeping from 10-6 is good enough.
Games like Dead Trigger will destroy your battery because not only are you using the screen, you are taxing the CPU/GPU as well. All in all your screen on time could be a little bit better, but considering you played at least half an hour of Dead Trigger and listened to music it isn't the worst thing in the world.
Dear nexus 7 FHD owners,
I have possessed my shiny new nexus 7 since tuesday last week, and boy am I happy with it. The only flaw it has is a dead (black) pixel in the lower left corner, which is covered by the soft button bar when in landscape.
While it is a fantastic tablet, I consider my battery life very weak. While I dont have exact numbers at hand, using google chrome to browse the interwebz drains the battery very quick imo (ill post on this in the future).
I do, however, have exact numbers on gaming. Yesterday I drained the battery from 100% to 14%, playing eternity warriors 2 for 3h14m straight, With a screen on time of 4h47m, of which an hour at the lowest brightness setting and the rest at 10-25%. Do these numbers seem to you? How much gaming time do you get on a single charge?
Idle drain seems about right, i left it at 88% when i went to bed last night, waking up with a charge of 85%. This is with wifi on in sleep, wifi and mobile network location on, currents disabled and all sync apps set to once/ hour. Though surprisingly when i tested the idle time during the day, leaving wifi off but all other settings unchanged, it drained 5% during my 6 hour school day, leaving the device at home.
I also played galaxy on fire 2 HD for 2h36m straight, draining the battery from 80-1% (i did maybe 10minutes worth of browsing in between).
I should mention that out of the box I had about 50% battery and I drained it to 1% on the first use before the first charge. I know this is bad for the battery, but it is said that most devices get their first full 100% charge in the factory right? Still though, might this have an impact on my battery life?
I'm looking forward to your feedback. The return policy ends tuesday next week, and I can return the device no questions asked until then. I will do that if it turns out my device's battery life is indeed quite the exception. I'm reluctant to do this, however, since I only have one dead pixel and I am afraid I might receive a device which has other or more flaws.
Your device's battery performance is pretty normal on the 2nd gen N7. Games seem to drain the battery the most. I get the same results. 3hrs with gaming. Worms Armageddon in my case. I usually get about 5-6 hrs od mixed screen-on use on a single charge. From what I observe Chrome will usually flatten the battery in 4-5 hrs depends on what pages you browse. The longest battery life you will get on video playback - up to 10 hrs with MXPlayer. That all on autobrightness.
I find these results a little disappointing. At least they are very far away from what is advertised. I do not know what is the biggest drain factor but I suspect the GPU and the wireless connectivity.
While transfering large video files over wifi between my nexus and an iPad it seems that the nexus uses more battery with screen off than the iPad with sceen on.

Thanks for your reply. It is really comforting that it's not just my device. Still considering a return for the dead pixel more and more, though.
RAM Hungry Games
I avoid RAM-Hungry activity. Mostly 3D games of course, drain my battery quickly when I have other services running, and the games that demand a lot of RAM at once will suck the juice out of that battery, so I usually keep it on the charger when playing demanding games.

wow, such nice battery life, and complaining
Mine drained in about 1.5 days last week with a bit of usage, with wifi on the whole time. Charged from 11%. No sync.
todays results
Today my battery was drained in: 1.5 hour gaming, 1 hour chrome, 5 hours screen on time.
I find these numbers quite the disappointment.

That does seem a little low to me. I don't do a lot of gaming (Tapped Out is about it) but I have a lot of on screen time between Kindle, web browsing and Netflix. This is all anecdotal though, I haven't actually measured how good my battery life has been, it just seems to be good to me.
Are you running a custom ROM? I'm running CM10.2 and I *think* battery life got better when I flashed it. But again, I didn't measure and compare so its just a gut feeling.

I'm running full stock. My stand by time is actually pretty good (1% overnight last night), but thats probably because ive disabled most power hungry features (location, wifi off in sleep etc).
While i do a lot of gaming and battery life is expected to be low then, I expected at least 4 to 5 hours worth of gaming, since it is advertised it should last 9 hours when viewing 1080p video (which is not streamed)

Bad assumption. The hardware video decoder is extremely efficient (at 0% brightness I measured 1.28W power consumption for 720p; equivalent to 11.7h battery life).
The CPU/GPU hits thermal throttling (not enough cooling to run at full speed) at about 5W power consumption (= 3h battery life). Going from 0% brightness to 100% brightness adds another 1.05W (total of 6.05W = 2.5h battery life). So a game that heavily loads the N7, can very quickly drain the battery.

Thank you for settling this problem with actual facts! IIRC the battery capacity was indeed 15Wh, though I didn't know max. usage was 5W, I thought it was more like 3-4W.
I'm a bit curious though as to how one monitors the system power consumption. Is ther an app for that?

I'm measuring via the USB port (I built a power monitor).
The N7 also has a battery gauge chip that can measure current. The driver logs some debug info, including a current drawn value every 60s. However, that value is only the average for one second, so it's not very stable.
In a root terminal, you can run
Code:
dmesg | grep bq27541
to get the debug info from the battery gauge chip.
(BTW, that current is the current flowing into or out of the battery, not the current used by the system.)

I use Battery Monitor Widget. Among many other graphs it provides a %/h graph. I can see in games my N7 drains at ~30%/h

Great explanation. Thanks. What is then happening in Chrome? It's the 2nd biggest battery drainer for me. From what I can see it drains battery at the rate of 20-25% per hour.

Chrome is a CPU pig. Even sitting around on a web page with a single animated GIF will eat 1.8W at 0% brightness. Add in some web pages with a lot of Javascript (Javascript is extremely CPU inefficient) or not using an ad blocker (it's pretty common to to pull in ad-related Javascript junk from 20+ places on a single page and a lot of ads include animated crap) and you quickly get a lot more...
Does anyone know of a better battery that will work with the zl.
As we all know this phone really suffers from poor battery life and overheating. I've managed to solve the overheating problem by flashing miui v5 and have it undervolted @ 987mv @ 1512mhz with doomkernel and kernel tuner, the phone is very cool now compared to before. However battery life is still dissappointing lasting only 10 hours a day dropping 10% every hour with light/moderate usage. Onscreen time it will die within 3 hours
So I wanna open it up and put a better battery so I can use a different rom cos miui is very restricted imo. xposed framework doesnt really work well with it.

Stock firmware gives me 4,5 hour screentime MINIMUM! So its NOT as we all know. It's your phone and your apps. Mine lasts a good day with more then moderate/light use. 13 hours with 75% left at the moment and 1 hour 10 min. screentime. Wifi always on. When out of house, 4G/LTE always on. NFC constantly on. So its you. Not your phone.
22,5 hour on single charge. 4,5 hour screen time. 8% left. I can't see your problem.
Sent from my C6503 using XDA Free mobile app
Yes you are correct, Im using paranoid rom and battery life has improved a lot. I also found that heavy undervolting uses more battery life. I'm new to android so didn't know this. What roms are you guys using exactly?
battery life
So? is there any after market battery?
heres my battery life, can someone help me?
I get around 15 hours with the stock rom. I switched to existenz but i havent tested it yet.
And i really want to change the bat.
If there was a way to put a LiPo 3000mah in this thing...
aliexpress.com
You can buy new battery for xperial ZL from aliexpress.com. Not many vendors though, but its pretty cheap.
I ordered mine and it reached from China to India safely in around 1 month. Seems good and genuine, but have not tried it yet. As others have said, it may not be a problem with the battery at all and changing battery wont do any good. Check if its really a battery problem or not.

i also ordered one from ebay it says made in japan now its working smooth and giving me extra 3-4 hours of battery life
after three years of extensive usage, my battery has now reached the end if its life. It now dies at around 30%- 40%. I tried battery calibration but it works only once. after a full 100-0% run, the next run dies at the same 30- 40% level. I have been monitoring voltage via ampere app. when it reaches 30- 40 % range, the voltage drops significantly from 3.5 to 3.2 and below and shut off abruptly. also, now during heavy usage, battery temp goes up to 50 C.
Does this mean the battery is completely worn out? or something else may also be bad?
anybody else with 2-3 years of use notice the same?
and if the battery is at fault here, can someone suggest me a link where can i buy one?

Same here, phone shuts down around 40% and whats worse is that the battery has deformed and pushed motherboard up causing a lot of problems. My ZL USB port short circuited blowing smoke and now won't boot up at all. Tested the battery and got voltage around 2.8V, which means safety triggers won't let me charge it
