[Q] a few Q's from a new rooter - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

yesterday i decided to finally read up on what rooting and flashing is, and I DID IT...i now have CM7 RC2 with the Honeycomb music app (not bad for a 40 year old chick who was just looking for something to so)
1. do i need to update my Radio if my calls work ok? (the radio is for calls? yes?)
2. i thought rooting would give me access to my phone's root directory, but it hasn't...is there a way to do this?
3. would the root/flash CM7 process have cleared my phone's app storage, or is it possible i still have leftover shiz from my previous stock 2.2?
4. moving apps to SD seems to do nothing other than tell me the apps are on SD..the DiskUsage app still tells me that the moved apps are taking up just as much space as if they hadn't been moved, and on a Desire, i am left with VERY little space...any ideas?
5. i don't know which visual parts of my 'new' phone are from CM7, ADW, or from an independent theme i have installed...is there a way to colourise menus? the phone system is B&W for me at the moment
6. AdFree, doesn't block ads, is there a way to actually be ad free?
7. how do i take screenshots (for no reason other than to know how to do it)
thanks you guys

1. do i need to update my Radio if my calls work ok? (the radio is for calls? yes?)
Post your radio version here... it helps
2. i thought rooting would give me access to my phone's root directory, but it hasn't...is there a way to do this?
Are you S-ON or S-OFF? With S-ON you still only have access to certain parts of the phone when in recovery... maybe this is what you mean?
3. would the root/flash CM7 process have cleared my phone's app storage, or is it possible i still have leftover shiz from my previous stock 2.2?
If you nandroid backup then wipe / flash a rom everything will be lost, but obviously you can restore using nandroid... (as long as you backed up!)
7. how do i take screenshots (for no reason other than to know how to do it)
If your rooted, type screen grab into the market place, there's a few free apps to do this.

Also for adfree to work you have to be S-OFF...
Good tutorail here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=794314

thanks guys
@KevAmiga
1. radio...is it called "baseband version"? i have 32.49.00.32U_5.11.05.27
!! scratch that, i just realised the zip file for the updated radio is called "bravo.5.11.05.27", so i guess it's the same one
2. i have s-off...i think i will leave it for now, i read the AlphaRev instructions and find them too vague
3. i don't want to back up, i wanted to make sure i was working with maximum space and didn't have leftovers from my stock 2.2...i have since installed Simple2Ext and have far more app space, so i will be ok with that for now (i've had it a whole 5 minutes!)
7. thanks
@00droid...thanks for the info, i will uninstall AdFree...and i had found that AlphaRev link, but the instructions are too vague for me

If your S-Off leave it that way...
With regards to the backup, thats only used if you need to go back to the stock ROM, its stored on the SD card but isnt in the same place the apps, rom go etc so it wont affect your "device space"

How To - Root Your Hero in One Click And Load Custom ROMs (with Videos)!!

Here is the easiest method (in my opinion) to root the Hero and load a custom ROM, theme, etc.... there is a video for noobs as well
Thanks to Cyanogen for his recovery image!
Thanks to MoDaCo for his great custom ROM!
Thanks to Zinx for FlashRec APK (thanks Amon Ra for letting me know who made it! http://zenthought.org/content/project/flashrec)
Enjoy!

How to Load Custom ROM on the Hero -

Cool... theunlockr.com seems an interesting resource.
Has anyone here tried these methods and had no issues ?
And, why do you need to format your SD card ??? Or is this a typo ??
Surely just putting the files at root level on the card is all you need to do as per the video...
Seems a very easy way to root though
Also, lastly, do you need to root to flash new Firmware ? I thought you just needed to install a recovery image permanently as per MoDaCo Paul's instructions.
I WILL get my head around this one day
Hello JoeMax,
1. Works just fine on the out of box Hero, done it to mine multiple times over.
2. Formatting is just a precaution, not necessary, but recommended and only take a few seconds anyway.
3. The Rooting video here is essentially using FlashRec to do MoDaCo's procedure to permanently flash the recovery image (and gives you a back up for your original recovery image). Then on the next video when you load MoDaCo's custom ROM using the newly flashed recovery image is when you will have root access for applications.
The recovery image he provides doesn't give you root access for applications but it does allow us to load a custom ROM with root access for applications. Make sense kinda?
Good luck! Hope it helps!
Ah, yes, I think it makes sense now.
And thanks again for making it easy for us slow people I need not visit Terminal and enter arcane scripture to allow me to keep my Hero up to date.
Hats off to you
OH, and this applies to loading new Radio firmware too - i.e. you substitute the ROM steps with Radio firmware ?
Excellent - nice one for posting this. I have the usual couple of questions.
1) - Will doing this still allow me to update with the official ROM release.
2) What do I need to do to be able to go back to how I have it now ( out of box with my personal data ). Wiping all data is scary.
3) - I've read elsewhere that you need to partition your SD disk - is this true, and if so can I do that on my computer ( and if so what kind of format )
Like Joemax, I'm on a Mac and am not to terminal savy
Great video tutorials - thank you for those.
Please make a video tutorial on how to format your SD card to ext3/ext4, including setting it up for Linux caching, and all that jazz. Thank you!
It just can't get any better or easier than this..
Great tutorial!
Are there any disadvantages to using this method of rooting?
This is what I want to know, are there issues with Market access ? I keep reading of people rooting and then loosing the ability access Market.
Also, if I update ROMS will this remove apps and settings ?
As I understand it, all the firmware and OS are in flash memory whereas apps and user data / settings are in SDRAM and is completely separate.

No issues with Market access (but you might need to put your APN settings back in of course).
When you update a ROM it is recommended to do a Data Wipe first, and that will erase your apps and settings. But you can get your apps back when you sign into your Google account and just goto My Downloads (then just download them again).
OK, thanks again David
Well, I better get som help with this, and by that I mean my problems.
Yesterday I tried this 'How to' and I as I described at theUnlockr.com, the result was a hero in a looping boot. It keeps rebooting after the screen saying 'htc' and some green doodles (animation) waving.
It keeps doing the loop and stops only when battery is removed. As soon battery is installed it starts op doing the loop thing.
There was no problems or warning doing the 'how to' and that goes for the rooting 'how to' as well.
When I debug the looping allot of errors and warnings are showing, obviously.
SDcard is 8Gb class6, partitioned in fat32, ext3 (533Mb) and swap(77Mb).
So I´m asking for help to unddo or replace the rom or whatever one do in a case like this. What can I do?
This is not a critical view on theunlockr.com - it is my fault somehow, but I need some help or guide line to recover from this situation. And yes, I´m new to Android world but I like it.
Sorry for english, I am not from around 'here'.
Well, I guess I don´t need the help after all.
I came to the assumption that the sd card, the partitions, might be corrupted some how, so I replaced it with the original sd card and before that I copied the content from the fat32 partition on the corrupted card to the original.
I then booted and wiped it and installed the update.zip again, and everything is almost back to normal.
I´m one happy dude now.
not working for me... put the files on the sdcard as mentioned. Run the .apk file and install it, so far so good. After opening it, the "Flash cyanogen Recovery 1.4" is greyed out.. ok, dont need it anyway.. hit "Backup Recovery Image" and wait... hero is working and after some time it says "backup failed". Also after typing "sdcard/cm-hero-recovery.img" the button "Flash Custom RecoveryImage" also remains greyed out...
I have a European black Hero (unbranded).
Can some one answer this simple question for me please,
I'v rooted and installed Modacos newest rom, I havn't got any partitioning tools in the Recovery menu, I realised that I used Recovery image 1.0
The question is, can I use the first video method to root and install Recovery image 1.31 or do I have to unroot and then root it again using Recovery image 1.31?
Hi,
I've got a UK hero on vodafone. I've done the first part of this and done a nandroid backup.
Before I do the custom ROM I have a couple of questions....
I keep seeing mention of a radio.zip - do I need this? what is it?
I assume I will need to make a paper backup of my APN settings?
Thanks for any info. I want to take the next step but I dont want to trash my new shiny thing!!
Cheers
Bryan
would this work for the CDMA Hero. I would like to root the phone and load custom roms that would enable me to save apps to the SD card.

[Q] Market & other apps gone - What to do?

My Kingston 16G class 10 sd card actually physically cracked and is therefore defunct but they will be replacing it within the week - but I do not have it backed up on my PC .
I had rooted my Incredible with Unrevoked 3 and had been experimenting with a couple of Froyo ROMs : Cyanogen6 and Skyrider 2.5. and I had just updated my Clockwork Mod Recovery and I had made full use of Apps2sd.
Now, when I put my old SanDisk 2G sd back in, it only had 1 nandroid backup on it and I am back to:
Firmware 2.1
Baseband 2.05.00.06.11
Kernel 2.6.29.....
PRI 1.28
Clockwork Recover 2.5.0.1
and while I still have some apps and my phone and wifi seem to be working fine:
I don't have Market, Rom Manager, Titanium (but I still have SuperUser). Also, when I USB my phone to PC - the PC doesn't see either. At this point, I don't even know if I'm rooted or have busybox.
I'm really puzzled as to what I should do next:
I don't know whether to do a phone restore from Settings or, perhaps from Recovery?
Or, do I want to try reinstalling Rom Manager and one of the Froyo Roms. But would that get me Market back? In all cases I'm gonna have to reinstall most of my apps since most resided (at least partially) on the dead sd. Fortunately appbrain has a record of all my apps. - but, from what I understand, there's no way to install the Market, except via HTC/Google/Verizon.
So, I probably won't have my new 16G card for almost a week and I'm very open to suggestions as to my best plan of attack
I guess I should also think about repartitioning the new sd - according to the recent lag fixes.
Please keep in mind that I'm pretty much command line challenged - so (perhaps foolishly) - I am doing all of this on the phone itself.
I recently downloaded SDK to my PC and I was just getting ready to try to get the hang of adb, the emulator etc - but I'm hoping I can get my phone back to where I had it before I get into that.
Thanx in advance for any help you can provide.
To be honest if you have to time to, just start all over.
Get the stock RUU and just wipe everything. Then unrevoked 3 again and start re-install / re-setup.
The appbrain app list will come in handy as soon as you get everything back to where it was.
That's just what I would do. It seems like the simplest solution from where you are at, but I'm no expert by any means.
Best of luck,
Flawless
Edit: Also about every week or so I copy my most recent Nandroid off my SD card and back it up to by harddrive. Just in case I ever need anything, like an old APK or old kernel or something. Just as a safety precaution although it may seem kind of redundant.

Thanx!
That was kinda what I suspected.
Where's the best site to get the stock RUU? I see several.
Are you telling me that now that I have the Clockwork Recovery that if I go to Settings > Privacy > Factory Data Reset - that I will no longer be restored to the original Google/HTC/Verizon stock phone?
Is it the same as if I go into Recovery > wipe data/factory reset which looks like it will go iinto Clockwork Mod v2.5.0.1 - which I don't don't whether it includes Market.
I managed to get USB bootloader to see hboot, reran Unrevoked 3, Cyanogen 6RC3 and Gapps and all is well Thanx!

[Q] Newby need entlightment from pros

Hello everyone,
I just got myself a new HTC Desire with Vodafone Branding.
HBOOT : 0.800
Software number: 1.19.161.5 (I believe this should be Android 2.1)
Kernel version : 2.6.29-b7e82785 (I guess this is still HTC original)
I wanna root my phone and if I guess that I can do further, I am also thinking of using another rom.
My main concern is that the internal memory can not fit any more apps and I still want to add more, after searching in the internet I found out that I need to root and/or to use other rom.
Second concern...I just wanna learn..
I have downloaded Unrevoked3 and the H-Boot USB driver.
From what I have read, I am all set for rooting (gonna do this tomorrow evening after work and after I have calmed down a bit, I am a bit nervous cause this is my first time ).
I have removed the HTCsync but still keeping the drivers.
I also know that I will need ClockworkMod. Make EXT2/3/4 partition with at least 512MB (I would like to make it 1gb) and optional SWAP (perhaps I will make it 256mb, do I really need SWAP?).
So, please teach me on :
1. Now about the rom, I need an Android 2.2 with optimum stability and speed, to tell you the fact, I don't even now which one and where to get it.
2. Beside the main rom, do I need also the camera and radio rom to get them running? again where to get them? How do I install them? The same way as installing the main rom (from HBOOT recovery)? Before or after installing the main rom?
3. How to make the back up of my current rom, setting, and apps? I don't have much apps yet but perhaps I would need the backup if something went wrong.
I still a whole bunch of questions but I guess those will do for now.
Please be kind and help me one this one pleaassssseeeeeeeee...
Anyway...thanks in advance.
Read in development.

1. This thread has all the rom's in it. It's all about personal taste but if you like sense i would recommend Leedroid to start with.
2. When you come form 2.1 you will need to upgrade your Radio, if you OTA upgrade to 2.2 before rooting you do not have to update your radio but you can. A link to the radio thread is also in the above link.
3.
Once you are rooted with unrevoked you can preform a nandroid form recovery or you can download Rom Manager from the market and backup via that.
If you just want to backup apps you can use titanium backup or you could sync your apps with appbrain and reinstall them.
About the ext partition, i think swap is not necessary and if you want a 1 gig partition use Gparted
Thank you very much for the answer.
I will look into those first.
If I found any trouble, I will ask you guys again.
Thank you again.
First, I wanna say thank you again.
I have read some review about the LeeDroid. It sounds very good.
I will pick LeeDroid as my first after market rom.
I will thus flash (.zip files are already downloaded in the PC) :
Leedroid 2.2e
Latest Radio ROM; 32.48.00.32U_5.11.05.27
LeeDroid 2.2e Kernel Boot Fix (Just to be sure, because I don't how my desires proc can be OCed)
DSP Manager.
My last questions:
- Is there any particular order which rom I should flash first?
Example : LeeDroid - Radio - Kernel Fix - DSP manager
-Can I flash them all with only 1 reboot (flash everything and choose reboot only once in H-Boot recovery menu)? or Do I have to flash only one at a time, reboot, and flash the next one and reboot again?
I'm not sure about radio's.
But if you flash leedroid 2.2e you need to flash it and after it (without reboot) flash the bootfix kernel.
Addons and theme's should be flash after the first full boot.
that is the correct order
you must flash the rom first, reboot, then flash the rest all in one go. REMEBER the first reboot is important!!
Got it!
Radio (I need the radio rom cause my radio rom is old, belongs to original 2.1) , Leedroid main rom and Kernel Fix in one go, then 1st reboot.
And then the other addons in one go.
and of course reboot again.
Thanks a lot guys!

h3llb3nd4 why is it important to reboot after rom flash?
It needs to install the boot images for the Rom.

lots of things came up to me this weekend, I am not able to flash my Desire.
Since I am doing this for the first time, I would like to have a quite time for myself alone, so that I am calm during the flashing just in case if something went wrong.
well...I will do it (I hope) on next friday evening...
I will write again the progress next week.
Untill now all I have done is the rooting via Unrevoked3, and installing the rom manager from android market. I haven'T even formatted the sd card.
Thanks again.
OK, Go to hell with quiteness.
I can not wait hehehehe just to anxious to start flashing.
and.....
I did it...it works...
Thank you
Flashing is not that hard...hehehehe...
I have played with LeeDroid and I have to say...This can do a lot more than the original.
Hmmm...I a fan of Sense although some say it slows down the phone.
I have tried the HTC HD ROM on my Desire, I like the new sense but too bad the camera still doesn't work. I have to go back to LeeDroid just because of the camera problem.
|OP|,
I joined this forum because I am a newbie just like you (before you got your Jedi-Flashing Wings).
I too have a HTC Desire running Android 2.2 (Kernel 2.6.32.15). I have exactly the same problem as you had - I've run out of room for apps on internal memory and the standard Froyo apps2sd thing can't shift anything else to the SD card.
I'm really interested to learn how your phone handles apps now. Does your phone think it has 1 gig of internal memory? Are you able to shift every app to the SD card? Did you have to give up your HTC apps and widgets?
I would really appreciate any feedback.
Cheers!
Yup...limited room for installing apps is my main or perhaps my only reason of flashing my desire with modified rom.
- About the 1GB thing, well I didn't do it since I wanna try the flashing procedure just as it is described in youtube desire rom flashing guide (not confident enough to do it all alone), and it is shown in youtube using only 512MB
But, I will try it later (planned on december after I finish my university assignment).
-Well, I have flashed and used it only for about a day or two, so I am still not 100% sure, but all the apps I have downloaded and installed are all going to the SDCard. I guess all of them will eventually go to the SDCard.
-HTC Apps and widgets? Everything is there, as far as I noticed until now.
Now, I am enjoying the DSP equalizer, apps to SDCard (16GB ), but still afraid of OCing.
SMS, WLAN, Camera, E-Mail, etc. seem to work smooth, no bugs found so far.
My Desire seems to run faster than with the original rom, but it is just my subjectiv comparison.
The phone won't 'see' your EXT partition but when you install apps the quoted storage will barely go down...I have a 1GB EXT3 partition on my SD card for when I use a custom ROM, its 16GB so I don't miss the space as I'm on a stock ROM at present and don't use many apps

If the storage are going down or used slowly, is it worth to have 1GB as EXT3 or just leave it be at 512MB?
Depends on the ammount of unneccessary apps you plan to install

Hahahahahahaha....
You got that one right on the spot.
Most of my apps are games.
Games are not considered as necessary apps.
I will stick with 512MB
Thanks EddyOS and |OS|,
This sounds awesome! I've got 14 MB remaining on my internal memory and a long list of apps I still want to play with.
With this news I'm going to jump into the whole flashing/rooting thing (incidently why do both of these terms have sexual overtones?).
LeeDroid here I come!
|O2| did you use the Unrevoked root method? Could you possibly post the youtube link that you mentioned? I am, as you were, quite anxious about turning my beloved Desire into an expensive paperweight so any extra tips would be very appreciated. (I have heard that it is fairly simple and has a very low risk but I'm still a bit hesitant)
Thanks again! What a wonderfully helpful community this is!

[Q] Installed applications are hidden

Hello,
I got my Desire HD a few weeks ago, it was locked on Three UK and I rooted and sim unlocked it to use it in Italy where I live.
I was playing with the application manager and noticed that there are a few apps that are installed on the phone (some Three UK apps, Bejeweled and so on) that are not showing at all in the apps list. They are in the installed applications of the application manager, but I can't do anything with them as all the controls for these apps are gray (not selectable). Anyone has any idea about what is happening?
I was also thinking to flash a stock ROM to get rid of all that unusable stuff and speed up the phone a bit (the Three splash screen makes boot crazy long), but I want to be sure I can go back to this ROM, if needed. I have a backup made with ClockworkMod, is it all I need or should I save something else first?
What stock ROM would be better for me to flash?
I am currently with OS build 1.37.771.3 and Radio 12.28b.60.140eU_26.03.02.26_M
Thanks in advance for the help!
No advice at all?
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
My guess is that those apps are part of the ROM and so you will not easily be able to remove them.
You could try using something like Titanium Backup to see if that will remove them but unlikely.
"What ROM should I use" is a question that should be banned from this site. It is up to you what ROM you like the most. I, along with others can only tell you what ROM works best for them. Pick one, try it. Don't like it then choose another.

Okay, I think I explained myself the wrong way
I didn't want somebody to tell me what ROM is better as I know it really depends on personal preferences, that's the reason why there are so many different ones, right? What I meant is: what is the latest stock ROM that allows me to root the phone using Visionary+? Do I have to worry about OTA updates or can I just download and apply them?
For now I just want to have a "clean" phone, custom roms and further playing will come in the future
And, the second part of the question is if a system backup done using ClockworkMod is sufficient to get back to what I have now, if ever needed, or I do need to backup something else first.
Thanks!
I'm afraid I can't recall the latest version that will still work using Visionary+ The last time I researched it was 1.32 I believe but don't hold me to that. If you have a look at the Android Development forum the Visionary threads will tell you.
If you use CWM Recovery to do a (NAND) backup of the current ROM then that is all you will need to do. THat will back up ROM, settings, apps, messages etc. Everything.

[Q] Didn't make a Goldcard on Telstra HTC Desire

I rooted my Telstra HTC Desire 2.2 with Unrevoked last night, and after a little bit of perseverance I finally got it to work, and I flashed the InsertCoin rom onto it.
Now I'm reading the forums, and apparently I need this thing called a Goldcard, and I've been reading around and still haven't figured out what they do, can I please have some help here?
Apparently it's only required for an unroot, but I may want to unroot in the future if I need to send it back due to warranty, and I have no idea how to get one because I already flashed a new rom. I still have the Nandroid backup from my stock rom, but I obviously made the backup after I rooted it with Unrevoked.
So here's my question, can I still create a Goldcard with my Telstra Desire, even though it's already rooted? (I can still restore my backup from my stock rom via Nandroid).
Thanks
[EDIT]
I made a Goldcard using a 2gb microSD but when I booted my phone with it, it wouldn't load anything (just displayed wallpaper), which I think is due to the rom requiring an SD partition (which this SD didn't have, so some required data may have not been on it therefore the phone didn't function). I then mounted it from recovery, and used the Goldcard tool to make it, should this work?

Hello.
Your gold card isn't related to the phone. So yes you can still make a gold card or use one of your friends phone (i don't know for sure if it has to be the same model, but probably) and make one. The gold card is unique per SD Card.
You can rest assured though, cause until you want to go back to stock with no ROOT or S-OFF, it will pass a long time, and maybe you'll change your mind. Personally I was like you, scared that maybe I must go back to warranty if I get something wrong. But the truth is starting to arise: I'll never need to go to warranty If I don't do something stupid to my phone or my phone doesn't have any motherboard faults. First is easy to accomplish with a lot of reading before doing something. Almost everything is replaceable (Flashing bad ROM, kernel, recovery, etc.), but flashing Radio's and HBOOT's ain't. If you did something/something happened (USB Cable Disconnect, Pull The battery out etc.) when trying to flash these, then it is permanently bricked(no comebacks). I don't want to scare you, but you should pay a lot of attention when flashing these. The second it depends on the phone itself.
Hope that helped.
Thanks for your help
Now I have another problem, and instead of making another thread, I might as well make use of this one.
For some reason, I can't download any "large" apps from the market (google maps, angry birds, etc), and I've searched there is a fix for this but it involves something to do with the market cache and moving it to the SD Ext Partition?
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'd like the possibility to download large apps from the market since I've rooted, and I want to use the full potential of my phone since I actually have some internal space now.
So how would I go about fixing this market cache problem? I've seen some fixes for CM7 but none for the InsertCoin rom I'm running, any ideas?

Hi.
Yep, I've heard about this new problem, since google allowed downloads of larger files from Market. Since some custom HBOOTS or even Stock HBOOK have the cache partition smaller than the file you are trying to download it won't be possible to save it.
You should search for a script that moves Dalvik-cache to SD or SD EXT. If the developer of the ROM hasn't made this than you have to search for (don't know if there is such script) it or try to ask it directly in the ROM forum. You should be able to get more help there.
