Was wanting some more help with rooting my Evo for the first time. I know there are a lot of guides for n00bs out there but this stuff moves too fast and they are out of date.
Anyways, my phone is stock:
-Android 2.2
-Software number 3.29.651.5
-PRI version 1.77_003
-PRL version 60671
My intention was to use Unrevoked 3.21 but I read through ALOT of information from different sites and am thoroughly confused. Since my phone has all the recent OTA updates can it be rooted with this? And if so, I most definitely need to not take the Sprint OTA updates and wait for the "rooted" versions correct?
I like the Sense UI (but never used any others) and am happy with the phone the way it is. My hope is being able to use the hotspot feature and remove the bloatware from the phone.
Can anyone walk me through some of this (specific to my need)? As said before, I know there are already some n00b walkthroughs out there but most are too dated and some things apply and some don't which makes it very confusing.
Unrevoked 3.21 is the way to go. I just used it to root my replacement evo and it worked beautifully. Here is the thread for it, just read it and follow the relatively easy instructions and you won't have any issues.
Great.....thanks. This one is the most current I have seen.
I have read that if I take this route the phone could still be flashed back to a stock state in case warranty service (by Sprint) is needed. Am I still correct in assuming this?
Absolutely. It is very easy to unroot and return your phone to stock.
I'm going through the process now. However, my phone has rebooted and unrevoked3 has been sitting doing nothing for awhile. It still says:
Waiting for root...(safe to restart if this doesn't work)
Recovery image: ClockworkMod Recovery
This has been on there for around 5 min now. Do I re-run unrevoked at this point? Do I need to do anything with my phone? What happens if I re-run it and same thing happens?
Thanks.
That happened to me the first time I did it. It worked fine the second. You're ok to run it again.
Nice....it was a success the second time. Thanks.
Now all I have to do is find out what to do from here! lol
You can find info on anything that you might want to do by searching the forums here at xda and by using google. I recommend reading up as much as you can before you start deleting or flashing anything.
The best piece of advice I can give you is to do a nandroid backup before you modify ANYTHING on your phone. That means do one right now so if by chance you screw something up, you can always restore it and be back to where you started. If you don't know what a nandroid is or how to do one, use the search feature here or once again, google.
Good luck and welcome to the xda community
Sorry to jump in on the post but metalhead has been so helpful to how I would like to root. I have searched for nandroid, nandriod backup, and back up nand. None of theme gave a clear path for tutorial. If you could lead me in the right direction I think that this should be made a sticky.
Thanks in advance.

Do you know what recovery you flashed? regardless, there are two ways to go about it. 1. turn your phone completely. hold Power and VOL - until the boot menu appears, use volume to move the selection and power to select. pick recovery. nandroid backup.
2. get Rom Manager(market). it has a one-touch button to reboot into recovery. easy peasy.
each recovery is different. Whether you have RA or Clockwork or some other third thing, you will get the same result, you just have to go about it differently.
good luck!!
I'm back post root! However, have some questions that I haven't been able to find answers to.
1) Am I OK to take my phone out of USB debug mode, or does it need to stay like that?
2) Can I re-install HTC sync and will it work with all ROMS?
3) I downloaded ROM Manager and Titanium Backup (both paid). When flashing a new ROM, all settings are gone as well as apps from the market. Is there a way to restore a rom without having to go back and re-download ROM Manager from the market then use it to restore? It takes to darn long to reboot the phone into recovery and restore that way.
Also with Titanium Backup, since it just backs up apps what is the point of doing a backup with it? If a complete image is saved by whichever backup you do, all apps in that image will be restored as well. When would anyone ever need to restore just the apps from before with the same rom?
4) Can I do a batch flash with a custom ROM and a custom theme? Or should I do the ROM first then the theme? I wouldn't think the theme can be applied until the ROM is flashed first. I'm not sure if ROM Manager will do this in a specific order.
Thanks.

1) i would leave it enabled. it doesn't hurt anything and there are a lot of programs and modifications that use it.
2) in the half dozen roms i've tried, HTC sync does work. i am curious though. what are you using it for?
3) i'm not 100% clear on what you want, but i'll try my best. if all you're wanting to do is restore to a previous rom(for instance, if you flashed a rom to test it out and hate it) as long as you did a nandroid backup BEFORE flashing the rom, you can restore with all your settings and apps in place.
with TB i back up with it in such a way that it preserves all my settings and apps(including PLACEMENT of the apps on my docks and home screens) This is very useful. i'm not really sure why you don't see the significance in TitaniumBackup. it would be an absolute PAIN to restore all your apps from the market. or even better, REMEMBER which apps you had installed after a flash.
4) i would ALWAYS flash a rom first, reboot, check it out to make sure it loads properly. i know it takes a while but it's better to wait, then to try and flash everything at once and frag your phone. it's your phone of course, so do as you wish, but my advice is to flash the rom, reboot, then flash your theme.
good luck!!
Good stuff to know.....thanks.
In response to #2........I'm using HTC sync to sync my contacts/calendar between the phone and Outlook. I do not like using Google apps for this and HTC makes it easy to sync with this program.
In response to #3......You did answer my question. Just wanted to know if there was a faster way to recover (maybe a trick through ROM Manager) that I didn't know about.
To explain more about my Titanium Backup question......now that i think about it I guess if a custom ROM is flashed, one can re-download Titanium and restore all apps/locations on the new ROM setup, which would make things incredibly easier than downloading/placing/sizing apps individually. But, will it also restore widgets with the size/screen placement as well?

Yessir, it did for me
Hi all, I'm thinking of rooting and possibly installing Cyanogenmod on my Incredible. I just had a few questions before starting, and would really appreciate some help. I'm planning on using unrevoked3.
1. I've seen a few warning messages in some tutorials I've read involving the type of screen on the phone, but I'm short on specifics of the dangers. How can a find out whether I have a AMOLED or SLCD screen, and what are the precautions involved with the rooting/installing Cyanogenmod for each type?
2. When installing Cyangenmod, will my texts, contacts, settings, apps, etc. be wiped? It it right that most of these can be backed up with Titanium Backup or other apps? Will I have to re-purchase any paid apps? Can I just restore backups, or do I need to re-download?
3. If for any reason I'd like to return to the stock HTC ROM, is that possible? How? Is this done with Nandroid backups? Is there a way to reset to defaults?
4. Is there any compelling reason to purchase ROM Manager and Titanium Backup, or will I be fine with the free versions?
5. Is flashing the radio necessary at any point in rooting or installing Cyanogenmod? (I am most unfamiliar with this topic)
More questions may follow. Thanks, and sorry if I'm being a nuisance.

Your device, if purchased recently is most likely SLCD. How to know? Do you still have the box? It should indicate type. Type of 3 or greater is SLCD. There are a few threads here on XDA you can search for to verify screen type from device, but idk how to tell you that.
2. When installing Cyangenmod, will my texts, contacts, settings, apps, etc. be wiped? It it right that most of these can be backed up with Titanium Backup or other apps? Will I have to re-purchase any paid apps? Can I just restore backups, or do I need to re-download?
Foremost, you should wipe all user data/factory reset before you flash CM or any ROM other than what you are currently running. See stock ROM and backup guidance below.
Unless you back up your texts, they will be wiped - there are apps that do several things with them, search for what works for you - such as having them e-mailed, stored, etc. Your contacts, if phone and not google-based will also be wiped. There are threads detailing how to convert phone to google contacts. Paid apps are tied to your gmail account, and will be available for d/l when gmail is reactivated on CM. Don't recommend TB to restore backups, especially not system apps, but to each his own, and ymmv.
3. If for any reason I'd like to return to the stock HTC ROM, is that possible? How? Is this done with Nandroid backups? Is there a way to reset to defaults?
Return to stock HTC ROM is done via RUU. Plenty of RUU threads to be found. Recommend just after rooting to back up your 'stock' setup, then you have the stock ROM, only rooted. The default settings will remain, but with root access. Going through the RUU process to go fully stock will remove root. Conversely, Virtuous ROM is a nearly 100% stock ROM, rooted, with enhancements. A best practice in modding your device is to periodically back up the contents of your SD card to your PC so you will have those contents if/when the SD card fails.
4. Is there any compelling reason to purchase ROM Manager and Titanium Backup, or will I be fine with the free versions?
In order to get the CM nightlys through ROM Manager, you will need ROM Manager Premium. Absent that, TB Premium is well worth the money. Supporting the developers via premium/paid apps keeps them developing for the device.
5. Is flashing the radio necessary at any point in rooting or installing Cyanogenmod? (I am most unfamiliar with this topic)
If your device is new, you probably do not need to flash the radio. Read the several very good radio threads on XDA for granular explanations. Many ROMs specify in the feature list the minimum radio version required. Note that flashing a radio can be risky if done incorrectly. Opinions vary on best version. I've had no issues with any ROM I've flashed with v 2.15.00.07.28. Also take note of the HBOOT version required/recommended in a ROM's feature list.

No nuisance worries. ALL of us were asking the same/similar questions at one point; knowledge sharing is the embodiment of the open-source community.
Thanks for the useful information. Another question, hopefully someone can respond to this one quickly. I went ahead and started rooting, and unrevoked has just been sitting there saying Pushing Recovery... (3575808 bytes) for the past 10 minutes, at least. Nothing is happening to my phone, it's acting normal. Is the process supposed to be so slow? I've installed the proper drivers.
That is normal.
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
Wow, that was quicker than I expected. Thanks a bunch!
are you rooted?
Nope. Still "Pushing Revovery". Hopefully this is still normal...if not could someone let me know what to do?
Just want to say it's better not to pay for ROM Manager in my opinion. I do have the premium license and it is handy for CM7 nightly downloads, but I don't even use if for that purpose any more. Other than that it doesn't offer any advantages, as it still requires you to perform certain functions manually.

^^^^^^ +1 on that - there used to be more stuff in the premium section, now it's just CM. So if you want CM nightlys, go for it, else stick to the free version.
Duly noted, thanks. BTW, that root yesterday went nowhere. I closed up unrevoked and unplugged my phone, it seems fine. I'm gonna try again when I get some time, but does anyone know what might have happened? It never got past that pushing recovery stage.

Depends of if you want leading/bleeding edge stuff - CM7 release candidate, or a stable version.
As a first ROM other than stock, you gotta choose whether you want solid/smooth and issue-free, or participate in the things that come with a release candidate.
My opinion - gingerbread is not all that compared to what we have now - but that's just my opinion.
I have another question. Which Rom has the most stable and mostly stock HTC sense 2.0 found in the desire z or desire hd/inspire 4g? I really am liking sense and I tried out the cm7 rc, it was good but I had some problems like when I install an app for the first time, it force closes unless I uninstall and install again. Maybe I'm doing something wrong, let me know. I'm willing to try out other Roms but I wanna be safe and not do much.
Try IncRom - stable, fast, insane battery life. For a more tricked out Sense Rom, try Incredibly Reengineered.

Okay, I need help. Every time I try to run unrevoked it's either communications with phone unexpectedly interrupted or failed to push recovery image. I installed the HBOOT drivers and I'm 99.9% positive I never installed HTC sync. Any ideas?
Are you connected to PC with the original USB cable? Some aftermarket cables don't work well communicating w/ PC, and are said to only charge but not transmit data.
Is there a one-click UnrEVOked out now? Think I saw that somewhere....

Edit: SD card has ample room, and is formatted FAT32, yes?
Yeah, I'm using the original, with charge only and USB debugging. I should mention that these errors happen the instant I plug my phone in. However, I do notice that "CD Drive (E Verizon Mobile" and two inaccessible F and G (which would normally be the internal storage and the SD card when set to disk drive) drives appear under my computer when I plug the phone in on charge only. Could this have anything to do with it?
The only versions of unrevoked I know of are unrevoked3, which roots and flashes Clockworkmod recovery as soon as you plug in your phone with the program open. There's also unrevoked forever which sets your security to S-OFF, but I'm pretty sure that's not what I'm looking for.

Stock unrooted ROM, getting errors on USB plugin? That may be something else.
For context, the version of unrevoked that's out does S-OFF automatically, users get no choice in that. Make sure you follow the steps in the guide(s) -
It sounds like you may have a toggle yet to click on the device so it's not giving you wonky errors on plugin - the guide(s) will tell you what needs doing.
Edit: There shouldn't be any popup prompts for Verizon Mobile when you plug the device into the USB when connected to PC.
Also, the elements of unrevoked must be unzipped, and they don't execute until you click on them - after device is successfully connected to PC.
The step-by-step guides should fix you up.
OK, so my AT&T Note 2 is almost here (FedEx tried to deliver it ye3sterday when I was at work) so I want to make sure I am ready when it gets here. So some questions:
1 I downloaded Odin and understand how to root the phone but where do I get the file to use with Odin to do the rooting?
2 After rooting, what program do I use to flash a new rom?
3 Is there a sticky thread somewhere with this information that I could read?
4 Is there a good program to import all of my contacts from my old Windows phone? I'm not sure what format they are stored in so that is why I mention that it is a Windows phone.
5 (opinion) What is the best rom for an AT&T Note 2? I plan on adding lots of applications later and I really don't like re-installing things often so I'll probably stick with whichever rom I choose for quite a while.

1: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2050297 - Does not require Odin to root. Just save to your phone, make sure Unknown Sources is checked in your phone's settings, run the file to install, run the app, make sure the exploit boxes underneath the "root" section are unchecked, then select root.
2: Download GooManager from the Play Store and run it. In menu, select Install OpenRecoveryScript. Follow the prompts, and it will download and install TWRP (custom recovery) for you. It will ask to reboot.
3: Simply do a search at the top of the forum.
4: Try Samsung Kies first. It should transfer all your contacts from most devices. Do this before installing a new ROM. Then make sure the contacts are saved to GMail's contacts.
5: It depends on preference. Each one have their own features and functionality, and varies on the version of Android it's using. I would research each one and see what entices you if I were you. Some ROMs may even have features of certain apps that you like built-in, enhancing the phone's performance due to the fact that it doesn't require an extra app to do what you want it to do. Most ROMs won't require you to "reinstall" things with each update of the ROM if you're just doing an update.

Thanks.
Maybe I'm making this harder than it needs to be. Looking at some of the roms I notice that some of them say "rooted". If I plan to flash a rooted rom do I have to root first? I assume no, but I thought I should ask.
But to install TWRP I think it has to be rooted and if I use TWRP to flash roms then I guess I'd have to be rooted first even if the rom being flashed is rooted. Now I've confused myself again. I really don't want to turn my $700 phone into a brick by screwing up.

Custom ROMs always require root because it relies on a custom recovery such as TWRP and CWM. So, in short, unless you want to stay stock, you need to root.
This post should help to greatly simplify things for you. (4th post in the thread) Instructions are referring to the jedi rom but they will work for almost any other rom. I am on clean rom and have tried several others. Everything works great on clean rom. My advice would be to download all the ones you want to try, flash them and try each one for a day or two until you figure out which you like the best, then get your phone set up how you want on that rom. Once you get the one you like perfect, make a nandroid backup and then you can always flash any new roms you want to try and if they don't work for you, you can flash your backup and not have to worry about setting everything up on your phone all over again.

Trust me, the phone is absolutely worth the wait and the money! Also like he said earlier, every ROM is different and my favorite won't necessarily be your favorite, but if you like the look of Stock, I use Jedix8 which has great battery life and performance and some cool extra features. CleanRom also has a great reputation and I'll probably give it a go soon just to see what it's like. PM me if you have other questions or anything at all

Thanks all. I think I have it all figured out (and thanks to FedEx's stupid delivery policies I've had 3 extra days to think about it).
I have downloaded Odin and a rooted img file from http://galaxynote2root.com/galaxy-note-2-root/how-to-root-galaxy-note-2-easiest-method
It will root and install CWM (although I think I would prefer TWRP from what I've rad.
I've doanloaded both the CleanRom for AT&T and the Jedi roms and will try those out. I think once I get the phone rooted and with hte custom recovery on it the actual flashing of new roms will be comparatively easy.
Well, I got my phone last night and charged it. Today I was able to root it, install TWRP, and flass CleanRom all in under an hour. Thanks to all those who offered help. The only issue I had/have is a lack of internet wit hdefault WAP settings: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=37478407
I've gotten around it using the Cingular settings but download speed is only 1.9MB. That's OK for now as I consider my options: live with it or talk to AT&T and see is something can be done without losing my unlimited plan.
Overall , this was an easy process thanks to the large databse of information here and friendly helpful people. I would encourage anyone who is thinking of doing this to proceed. It is easy once you start.
Hi i have a t999 samsung s3 (not rooted). I am quite new to this whole rooting/development scene. I really want to try out 4.2.2.
Some questions i have are:
- After i root my phone and put a custom rom does it wipe my phone or does it leave all the data on (apps, personal settings and what not)? If yes, is there a way to backup everything and restore it after i have put on a custom rom so that everything i had is back to normal?
- Also which rom has good battery life? I have heard some roms are really good on the battery life compared to the stock version.
Thanks a lot for the help

To add to that, battery.... Depends... On several factors including, but not limited to ROM, kernal, use, temp, this that, your pretty neighbor who's running out side. So, your best bet is to and see what will work better for you.
However, since you're new to this, there's somethings I want to say before you start:
-Make sure you have a T-Mobile phone before rooting and flashing using methods and ROMs here.
-Beware of possible lost IMEI when flashing. It's completely random. Go ahead and make a backup of your IMEI: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1801997
- If you go from a 4.2 ROM back to a 4.1, you could randomly break your GPS. If that happens: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2211690
So just wanted to add a couple of things more concise.
Yes you will lose your data when you originally root your phone, however there are benefits to rooting and data in the long run. I highly recommend purchasing titanium backup pro. This will allow you to always have backups of your apps and data stored on the phone. It also allows for cloud storage so lets say your sd card and phone suddenly get fried, no worries once you get your new phone and root it install titanium from the play store and then restore your data from cloud storage.
As far as battery life goes this is dependent on what ROM you choose and what kernel. If you aren't familiar with kernels the less techie way to describe them is they kind of dictate what speeds your phone will run at (this is a very one sided description). Some kernels are designed to be overclocked, so what that means is your going to get faster speeds, the downside to that is faster speeds mean more heat generating of your processor because it needs more energy. More energy means more battery usage, which means a faster dying battery. Some kernels on the other hand are designed to actually be underclocked, which means longer battery. Then there are even kernels that underclock when the phone is asleep and know to overclock when its running a game or something. Long story short on battery, it really depends.
And as far as you rooting your phone, take the time to learn about the process first. Watch multiple you tube videos from different methods. At this point the phone has been out long enough everything is scripted basically so you just pick the right choice and your phone gets rooted, but it is still imperative you familiarize yourself with the process. Words such as adb, recovery, terminal emulator, odin, your going to want to know. Finally if you have any questions ask. Some people will be like www.google.com, but most of us all remember we were there once and needed help also.
I rooted my s3 last weekend. Quite easy, first time I ever rooted. Currently running Wicked 9.1 absolutely love it
Once rooted, download Rom manager and titanium backup. Titanium saves all your data when you flash new Roms

thank you all for the insight
i ended up rooting my t999. but when i go into recovery i still see stock recovery not clockworkmod. does anyone know why this happens?
also in titanium backup which backup do i need to do so everything will be exactly the same when i restore after i flash custom rom?
I had that issue.
Download ROM manager from the playstore. Then download clockworkmod from it. Then from the app go into clockworkmod.
Once there, if I'm not mistaken, reboot. It'll ask you something and hit yes. Basically what's happening is when you try to activate CWM the phone isn't letting it register but this option will override that and you'll be good to go.

For titanium, I back up all user apps and data. When you flash a new rom, only recover apps you've downloaded. Select one by one just to make sure you don't download any system apps.
System apps with a custom rom can brick your device.
When you download a new rom, always read the opening posts for instructions and make sure it's a rom meant for your device.

A couple of quick questions.
1. What rooting method did you use. I ask this because I would refrain from using CWM. CWM used to be the standard, in fact I have always used it until rooting my s3 last week. A lot of the developers are now using TWM recovery. I don't know the reasons behind it or if it will matter but it seems like twm may be more friendly with the s3. One huge benefit of twm recovery is that it is touch screen by default which is a lot easier to use. To get the touchscreen version of CWM you either have to pay for it, or no how to flash it manually usinig adb (this will probably be somewhat confusing for you but there are step by step instructions for it).
2. As far as titanium back up goes. Ill give you a quick run down of how it functions. For starters the basic and simplest way to make a backup is press the menu sofkey, batch options, then under backup just click on 'run' to the left of backup all user apps. From here the defualt is all apps will be selected. if you want all your apps backuped just hit the green check mark at the top right. If there is an app you don't want just uncheck it then hit the check mark in the top right.
As far as recovery of apps goes do the same thing (menu, batch options) but this time go down to restore and restore all aps with data (or missing apps with data depending which option you need).
Now for system apps, I do not recommend you using the batch operations for saving system apps. The truth is you never really want to restore system apps onto a new ROM. There are certain system apps that usually can be restored onto a different ROM or os version such as bluetooth pairings, your sms messages, and wifi passwords. Even restoring these can cause problems so what you want to do is restore them individually, restart the phone, and then make sure everything is working as it should be. Send me a private message if you want and Ill go into detail how to go about doing this.
Hey guys,
So i recently got an LG gpad and I've always used apple devices. I usually like to not interfere with anything software for the first couple of weeks till i get the hang of it then i like to tweak my device. Same for my iphone and ipod, jailbroke it and installed all sorts of goodies.
Now it's time for this beauty but first i have a few questions. I know the questions I'm asking have probably been asked before but it would be great if I could find more tailored answers under one post, thank you.
My first question is about a bug or something, i'm not sure.
For some reason whenever i used firefox's keyboard and sometime other apps too the screen flashes. Dont think it's a hardware problem since it doesnt happen everywhere. Any theories?
Now for the really tweaking questions
1. Is there a way to unroot and go back as if nothing happened while i'm on kitkat?
2. Is there a way to restore stock recovery? With keeping root ? And without keeping root?
3. I've seen a flashing tool mentioned more than once, does it work for the gpad? Is it recommeneded or should i go manual? I'm. Prepared to learn the manual way either way and then use the app simply coz i like to learn technical things. Any post or instructions to help me here would be great.
4. CWM or TWRP. Yes I'm a new user but i learn extremely fast so go going for the "easy" option isn't necessary. Is there a way to switch from one to the other? Anything i must be cautious about?
5. Is there a way to install multiple roms? I wanna try new ones but i don't like the idea of losing the stock. Not yet at least, still having cold feet. If there's a way to use both that would be great.
6. One of the reasons i want to root is be able to move apps from internal to external sd using link2sd and foldermount. Any drawbacks to that? Would it slow my device? Is it normal that nearly every app I have created a folder in my emulated/0/ folder? Hate having it too populated. Can i delete/move them?
7. If you mention a couple of apps to get after rooting that would splendid.
Thank you in advance and again I'm sorry if this was posted again, but as i said i wanted everything tailored and under one roof.

1. Is there a way to unroot and go back as if nothing happened while i'm on kitkat? I am running a V510 (GPE) and can't help you on 1) and 2)

4. CWM or TWRP. Yes I'm a new user but i learn extremely fast so go going for the "easy" option isn't necessary. Is there a way to switch from one to the other? Anything i must be cautious about? Chevy or Ford? American or Japanese? Try them both and decide for yourself.
5. Is there a way to install multiple roms? I wanna try new ones but i don't like the idea of losing the stock. Not yet at least, still having cold feet. If there's a way to use both that would be great. Once you have a custom recovery installed, you can make a nandroid backup of any ROM you are running. Then it's very easy to just restore another nandroid backup.
6. One of the reasons i want to root is be able to move apps from internal to external sd using link2sd and foldermount. I'm not familiar with this. Any drawbacks to that? Would it slow my device? Root Explorer is well worth the $2.99 cost.

Yes it does. When you restore a nandroid, it will be identical to when you made the backup. I am not familiar with foldermount. Try to google your question.
