OS Comparison: 2003, 2003SE and 2005

Having recently discovered xda-dev I've read an enormous number of posts in the past weeks - so many that they all blurr somewhat in my mind!
There is a lot of discussion about the various OS options ... but nowhere can I find a concise list of the differences between the 3 options.
So here I am. I've got my Himalya. It does most of what I want. But of course I'd like it to go faster, give me more, etc ... the standard demands of a boy with his toys.
Upgrading the OS might make it better for me - but I cannot tell for sure.
Hell - I still haven't found anything in the forum that tells me how to figure out exactly what OS I'm running!
It seems to me that we need to codense the many threads into the facts - perhaps on the wiki.
I can't do it - I've only ever run the default OS that came on the unit (and as I said, I don't even know which OS it is for sure).
But there must be plenty of people here who are familiar with all 3 - who could summarise the differences.
We've all see the plenty of 'product comparison' charts on the web ... surely there is someone here who has the knowlegde to compile such a chart?

[REQ][OS] Meizu M8 WinMo/Iphone OS Clone

Just wanted to put this out there, I know theres been a lot of interest in porting android, so thought maybe this, as an idea, had been side stepped.
Having seen a few demo's of the New(ish) Meizu M8, it does have a very slick interface, and as far as i'm aware it is based on windows mobile.
How difficult would it be to port the Meizu rom to the diamond?? Surely it would be a lot easier than some of the other large projects that are running.
Its not that i'm desperate to have an iphone interface on my phone, but it is one of the slicker winmo implementations i've seen.
Just an idea, worth discussion if nothing else...
Good question...... I would like to see the same thing for the Sprint TP!

Iphone on diamond!!!!!!!
just in case anyone know how to port meizu xip... here is the new firmware (0.9.0.0)...
http://www.meizume.com/m8-firmware/7812-m8-firmware-0-9-0-0-a.html
rapidshare: http://rapidshare.com/files/187099084/xip_0.9.0.0.zip
Would love to see this on my Diamond!
well there will be issues: as Meizu M8 uses Win CE instead of WM6.1, which has lot more differences in the code. though i'm not a programmer but to me they seem like 2 diferent plateforms.
released and started shipping on wednesday:
http://en.meizu.com/news/MeizuM8OfficialReleaseDate827.html
The mMobile UI is rubbish..
Simply another iPhone clone on WinCE 6.0. I don't think it's worth to use.
so why do you care about this thread then?
screen shots??
e.g. http://mobilearsenal.com/new/new_meizu_m8_screenshots.html
how can be used? on a diamond??? this is a bin file ??
It cant be used.
chinmay007 is right, this is based on a completely different OS - not a chance of it working.

From memory the relationship between WinCE and WinMo is similar to that of DOS/Win3.1 in a really basic way -> WinMo runs over WinCE and provides the user-layer functionality/experience, hence it may still be possible to use this OS.
ive been watching those ppl for the almost a year awaiting the release... then i bought the diamond last month and the m8 is finally out it would be awesome if it was ported but superbly doubted
Hi guys !
I did not understand one thing: I can install this ROM on my Diamond? it is dangerous? Thanks
I suppose you could rip some of the packages and convert them from the 720x480 resolution to diamonds resolution 640*480.
The OS maybe could be converted, but still all resolutions had to be adapted.
Not impossible, but a lot of work.
ok . THX for the answer
Guys, i've a question :
I've downloaded the MEIZU M8 ROM , but in the .rar there is a .bin file ONLY . How can I extract IT ?!
I'm sorry , but i'm ignorant on this subject but I'm curious

XNA(GS4) & VB integration means you can do whatever you want.

^it's only a matter of time before you l337 ha><ors will find a way to customize EVERYTHING on WP7S. i got a lot of confidence in all of you cookers.
personally i'm really excited to see what you guys will come up with, not just the standard offerings that OEMs will give us.
if you thinking cooking ROMs now is l337... just wait til you start truly diving into VB and using real powerhouse computer languages to bring a new look to the new phones.
i am already requesting this:
please, som1 'cook' up a LCARs star trek TNG UI complete w/sound fx =). i think the "tricorder" is no longer sci-fi. it's REAL and it's ON
I must have missed the memo when VB became "1337"
it's a mean to an end =P. a tool. ultimately it's l337 ha><ors on here will figure a way around the restrictions and put in their own UI designs =). i don't doubt it. it'll simply be a matter of time and figuring out the BIOS portions. these phones have like a BIOS type stuff like PCs don't they?:

Sorry, is this VB as in "VisualBasic" or something else that is abbreviated to "VB"? Because I'm really not recognising that as a description of VisualBasic.

Ah, cool, so you're just giving us textual diarrhea and don't really have a clue what you're on about?
Cheers for the link, anyway.

may be typo,
I think is VS (Visual studio )
But why XNA don't support VB.net?
elyl, every1 asks me all the time the same question IRL . muhahaha
i think i'm referring to the whole software development package in general. i still use 'old terms' like VisualBasic to refer to the whole 2008 .net C#, etc.etc.etc. and all new languages that are used =P
WP7 is going to support .NET and Silverlight. All managed code so they'll limitations to what you can do. On the brightside that also means they'll be limitations to how much a program can mess up your device lol.
XNA 3.1 doesn't support VB through VS.NET, but you logically, you should be able to use VB for XNA in some fasion, considering it all goes to CLR anyways.
This post is retarded though. WM6.5 had already had access to .NET CF which is alot more complex than the .NET Framework they are exposing to WM7. Where WM7 wins is with Silverlight and XNA. But then again, even both of those frameworks rely on exactly what pieces of the .NET Framework they make available.
If WM7 programming is anything like the Zune HD, expect pure failure. Zune HD SDK is nothing but an embarssment to Microsoft and developers who even want to code with it. I can't imagine Microsoft would make a similar move with WM7, but if they do, Android and iPhone, hell even Palm will have a lead.
Only time can tell, and that time is in a few day. The Beta SDK will be released to MIX Attendees, TAP Members and MSDN Subscribers come monday/tuesday. Expect next week to be a huge week in the development and potential for success of WM7.

Help port android on Sony Dash.

can someone help port android on my sony dash
As for the Sony Dash tech specs, it's got the 7-inch touchscreen with gesture support and a WVGA 800x480 resolution. The Wi-Fi is 802.11b/g and it includes a 500mhz processor. And accelerometer.
this is able to support android hardware wise. ive seen android phones with 500mz processor running 2.1
Hope this gets done
I just recently got a Sony Dash. It's nice looking with a nice screen and I like the capacitive touch, but other than that, I'm not too impressed. I don't like any of the available themes, and it is very slow and sluggish. I don't like how it doesn't have any kind of storage and has to re-download anytime the theme or channel apps are changed.
Basically, I think this thing would be a ton better with Android on it. Android widgets are a ton better than the Chumby apps and I would prefer having a "home" screen where I can place them anywhere I want rather than being locked into the half dozen available themes. I hope somebody takes on this project.
Does anyone have news about being able to port Android onto Sony Dash?

I would be willing to contribute a Dash to someone that is legit and could get something done for this. I just got the new HID B70 with the battery and the OS is awful! If anyone can do it, I know it's the guys on this site, you guys are the best!
Yeah, the OS is definitely awful. That Chumby crap sucks hard if you are used to Android.
Any chance there is someone working on this?
Count me in
I was looking at a Dash on Sellout.woot for $79, for my 6 y.o. daughters room. I would buy several these if someone ported android to it. This has all the makings of an incredible clock radio with android. The stock OS does seem to suck. For the development community, i think this has the same potential as the gTab. A fine piece of hardware with a crappy OS, but this would add a new category. As a nerd, (I am a chemist, unfortunately not a an android wonk), I find this to be a great opportunity.
To give a commercial value to this, I would buy the ported software for ~$20. While $20 from one guy is not interesting, perhaps this is something that could be sold and really up the value of the Dash. If 20% of Dash buyers bought the android port, it could be worthwhile as a business. God knows sony dumped a load into it.
Here's what I could dig up on the Sony Dash.

Android on MIPS

Probably the biggest barrier is a lot of the Sigma Designs stuff is closed source. From what I found here:

Access to the SDK is expensive.
Sony is shutting down their developer server in February 2013. Now would be a GREAT time to port Android onto the Dash...
I use a lot my sony dash and i hate the OS!
Its aweful!
I will pay 30 bucks by paypal to the guy who port android on the sony dash!.
theres a usb port so it willin't be too difficult to port it!
and theres nothing about this device on the web :s.
Sony just stopped to support it so it could be the great moment to port it before we can't do anything with it!
You can find all the softs for the chumby at the sony site
i would donate 30 bucks also
I would gladly donate to an android on dash project.
I would also donate to a project for Android 2.x on the dash.
In fact we might be able to use Cofundos.org to supply a method to fund development: http://cofundos.com/
I'm in for $30 as well. Really need to get this thing hacked
What's the first step? Compile an Android-compatible kernel, and flash it to the Dash and see if it boots?
If so, we have kernel source, so that part should be possible.
But, how do we flash a custom kernel? Anyone know?

Hello,
I will put up 50 or what deal we have to to get this done, need someone to take this tv (insignia ns-42e859a11) that is running a chumby app system and make it run the android app system. I can give any info need on my tv and android if needed.
I also found this and wanted to see if this might help in some kinda way.

The Sony Dash is slowly being shut down by Sony.
I'll offer $40 US to anyone who can port a 4.0+ Android ROM to the Dash with working WiFi.
I hate to bump such an old topic, but it seems like there hasn't been any development here at all. I wanted to chime in with some of my findings.
Kit Wood at hackadashery.blogspot[dot]com (sorry, can't post links, new member!) has made some discoveries.
Also, using netcat, its apparent that the Dash is pretty closed down. Port 22 is a no-go, while 53, 139, 445, 548, appear to be open.
Attached is the control panel swf, as well as all the assets I was able to pull from the swf file. Nothing too exciting, it seems. If anyone knows anything about swfs, take a look.
This thing is truly a bizarre device.
swf source code
I was able to extract the swf source code.

[Q] Interested in exploring hololens development

So I have never developed anything for windows before, but with seeing the hololens preview video it got me excited to start dabbling with this. I have been wanting to dabble with android apps but haven't gotten around to it yet. I was wondering if yall could point me in the right direction to getting started with getting ready to develop for the hololens/windows 10 (as I understand they will be the same development environment) so that when a development kit does come around I can be familiarized with the ecosystem. I have found a small bit of documentation from microsoft so far that I will be perusing that talks about some code samples, etc and I am getting visual studio, etc.
Anything else I should know or go look into that would help me to get ready to develop stuff on hololens?
you should keep me update to im very interested in the production and development of the new lens

Yeah definitely interesting.
I'm guessing that developing for Hololens will be very DirectX oritented, while Android development is OpenGL. The general skillset for developing in Android probably wouldn't be readily transferable to Hololens (and vice versa), so if you planned learning on how to develop for both, you'll probably need to learn two completely different skillsets.
It will be interesting to see what frameworks/engines end up supporting Hololens (would probably suit something like Unity?).
Im really new into these type of things. would you happen to have an idea where I could start to learn or any books or methods you would recommend to start from?

For Hololens development specifically? To be honest it's probably a bit early to say (I think Microsoft only announced the Hololens a few months ago). Since it's a Microsoft device, it would be a good bet that it would be powered by the .NET framework, so learning C# might be a good base, but at this point in time I don't think Microsoft have released specific development details (I might be wrong). You'll probably need to wait a little while before a Hololens Developer's book is available.
I see, thank you. This information was helpful I appreciate it.
@rovo89 ?
I am using windows 10 long time but does not hear about hololens before can someone guide me what exactly it. Boardersguide
If there is anyother hidden feature then please let me know. Americatools
