[Q] overclocking limit - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok I have Rom warm 2.2 n ziggy cfs havs n Wen I try to overclock it to 1.228 and run benchmarks ill stop half way in 3D in that room. Is this happening because my phone can't take it? I could overclock it to 1.190 and it runs fine

Yup. Your phone can't take it. I dontbeven know why kernel devs give the option to run higher then 1.19

The phone can't handle it. It'll either freeze like that, or just start rebooting.

I don't know why people insist the evo cant take it. I'm running the latest Sprint Lovers Rom with KiNgxKernel-Evo-12-BFS357-2.6.32.25-Flashable Kernal, and I have SetCPU set to overclock at 1267. and it works just fine. Never locks up or reboots. I think it depends on what Kernal you are using.

The kernel does play a part, just just like kernels, not all phones will take it. I personally don't ever have a need to even go past ~900, I'm on 128/614 and no problems.

All CPUs are not created equal. Some can take it, some can't. Qualcomm just makes sure that it can reliably operate at 1 GHz.

Why are the evo OC'ing abilities so low in the first place? I have tried to search for a answer but never found one. I was sort of waiting for a opportunity like this. Take the Evo Shift, it can OC to like 1.8. That is almost 2 times over! One would think we should be able to OC top 1.4 or 1.5, right? Didnt you think that when you first got your phone? I know I did! Dont get me wrong, I have not had any real lag like I did with my Hero, but I never really lagged with my Optimus S either. Can someone link me to the official reason spelled out by the devs as to why the evo cant OC very high...

Because evo has a old snapdragon; evo shift has new. Some phones have better hardwares with better oc'ing capabilities. Can't do much bout it

Highest I can go is 1.228, Most of my friends with evo's can only go to 1.19ghz.
I wish mine would go to 1.267.

I understand the older chip thing, but it just doesnt seem like it allows OCing like other phones. Take the HTC Hero 600 is stock, it can OC to 768, almost 200 over. The Evo must surely have a better chip than the Hero, no? I am not complaining/whining, I just thought it would OC more thats all

i get to 1.22 with cm7...tiamat sbc... with just about every nightly build and every tiamat. i set the governor on performance. when i try 1.26 yup, freeze, reboot, etc., just like stated here. does the governor matter/ or is that irrelevant?

Someone has mentioned that upgrading the hboot will get you to 1.2 Ghz. Can someone confirm this or is it really just a hardware limit?

Well you can overclock to 1.19 which is almost 200 but reason is our processor sucks plain and simple the shifts is the updated snapdragon processor it is like a modded car its going to get better speeds

out of sheer curiousity... what do you guys do with your phones that requires 1.2 ghz? Seriously just curious, not slammin' you guys at all. With normal daily usage, on CM7 I can get away with 537/128 mhz and my phone still kicks everyone's moto droid x's and x2's in the ass. AND my battery lasts for like 20 hours. Can't beat that. I love the Evo

I still don't get over clocking...

Its supposed to be better performance. I bet you, who's kicking droids,can't play music while playing some graphic heavy game while your phone is navigating in the back ground

Evo overclocking questions, hopeing for some Dev input!

Hey all, I want to get some info on the limitations of our processor, mainly is their a ceiling on how high we can overclock our Evo's?
I am sure most of us here are familiar with the insanely fast 1.3ghz-1.8ghz(I think the top I read was 1.8ghz) speeds some newer phones are getting clocked to, the only thing that caught my eye about these speeds is that they are reported stable & usable. Coming from a Hero(a while ago) that I had to overclock to my Evo that is not really necessary to overclock was nice, BUT it would be awesome to have an Evo clocked at 1.5ghz-1.8ghz and stable as well as usable, is this even remotely doable? If not what is causing the limitation? Just curious

It all depends on your phone....what may run on yours may send mine into random reboot...I found mine is stable at 1.13
You may want to raise the bar a little at a time to see what you can handle....be sure not to have it set on boot till you are sure your phone can handle it....

not exactly sure how it works on the phones but if its anything like a pc processor then it would take a kernel that can tweek voltages right like to get a 1.8 on our ever i would say it would need about a 3 step down uv but not sure if it would be stable heck at 3 step down uv it shouldn't boot unless its set oc'd on splash boot I'm pretty sure since our proc. are first gen snapdragons and the one's in the G2 and myTouch 4G are second with a smaller die ours won't be able to make it that far up with out major modification
Hmmm......so if I were to get off my ass and learn to compile a kernel I could at least attempt it, good info, thanks! At least now I have a place to start researching, I think I would be happy with a bump to an even 1.5ghz if it were stable, well if anyone else has more info I'm all ears!

I got mine at 1.15 anything past that seems unstable 1.2/1.25 reboots automatically (cm7 nightly 88)
The FroYo kernels come unlocked to 1190 I believe. When I was running FroYo I ran 1152 all the time. You don't really need to compile your own kernel unless you really want to. All of the kernels available here are unlocked except for the stock kernels. Also 1190 was about the limit for most EVOs.
I don't have an evo, but I do have a snapdragon, use quadrant to check scores after an overclock. 1190 isn't so good. Makes lower scores than the stock 1ghz. Fsb bottlenecks at that speed, but gets a boost at 1530. I've had my snapdragon around 1600 stable all day. Low battery life though.

Back a little while ago the G2/Vision thread (before Desire Z was merged) had a thread about overclocking made by a user named Flippy. I followed it for a while because it was getting insanely out of control and awesome. I had used 1.9Ghz as my max oc for a while and It was great. Now I'm on 1.8Ghz again because the 1.9Ghz kernel was removed later on and replaced with the 1.8Ghz update zip. (For some reason doesn't work for me so I had to fastboot it)
So the reason I made this thread is because I would like to have the 2.0Ghz kernel. I know it's possible and has been done already. I've looked into compiling my own but apparently I need linux to compile it and I'm not fond of installing VM's on my old computer that will barely run as it is.
Now I ask of you, if anyone who is kind enough to possibly please compile a 2.0Ghz zimage for me, I would be greatly in your debt and appreciate it much so! I understand that it is my fault if I mess up my device and only I am held responsible.
Thank you in advanced to anyone kind enough to offer their services.

Why do you need to overclock that high? I've used the 1.8Ghz and found that to.be overkill. I'm running at about 1ghz at that seems ample.

You don't need a VM. You need to wipe the garbage off and install linux on the "bare metal".
While it would be *neat* to oc this phone to 2GHz - just because. It would be beyond useless and I can just see some noob burning down their parents house or possibly starting a nuclear war with Russia by accident. Lets not forget your carrier reporting you to the CIA for having a nuclear reactor in your phone.
Look, with no active cooling it's just downright stupid to go that high. However being the genius' that we are I'm sure somebody could devise a method to install a mini fan or some liquid cooling on this phone. But then you may need that nuclear reactor to power all that stuff. Haven't we already set a guiness world record at 1.8GHz on a production phone anyway? Maybe we need to tell them so we can make it in the book

LOL, it didn't make you go back in time or some ****?
The 1.9Ghz kernel caused my phone to crash. 2.0 would burn your phone's processor out. Just use the 1.8Ghz kernel and have the profiles on SetCPU set to the lowest speeds when the display's off.
Your phone may not actually run stable at 2GHz. Mine doesn't run stable past 1.6GHz, and that runs psx4droid *perfectly*, especially with the optimization they've done in the app recently.
Also, even with setCPU profiles, battery drain when you ARE running that high is a beeeotch.
Honestly, it's not really for OCing that high, but rather the look at what I can do I had a friend just ask be how high I can OC my phone and at 1.5GHz he's like woah :O His face at 2GHz would have been like
I previously used Flippy's kernel on my G2 and did OC it to 1.8 GHz, and got a Quadrant score of 3037. It was cool to see how fast my phone could actually get, but I'm more than comfortable with OC'ing it to 1.4 GHz. Anything more than that seems to be unnecessary to me, but that's just my opinion. Last thing I want is to have my G2 melt while it's in the pocket of my pants.

tried the module but the phone freezes after doing anything above 1.4ghz
I believe it needs voltage tweaking which I don't know how to go about sooo... yeah

Nope, not for me anyway. I know different HW revisions and such have an effect on how high you can oc but my phone doesn't skip a beat at 1.8GHZ. I'm sure I could go to 2GHZ or a bit higher but unless I'm trying to emulate a PS3, I don't see the purpose - aside from maybe setting a record.

Same. I can do 1.8 all day if I keep near a charger. Anything over 1.3 will drain my battery like a monster though.
I keep at 1.2 regularly and only go higher for games.

I can jog 1.8 and 1.9Ghz for a day without even reaching a dangerous temperature.
Can I get some supportive ideas and less herp derp personal opinions?
Highest Ive pushed mine is 1.5ghz. No need to go any further, Im satisfied with the performance. I get a full days battery life and the temperatures never get critical (my setcpu profile is set to underclock at 38.2 degrees Celcius but my G2 hasn't gotten close to that). Im curious at what stage my G2 would score 3000+ in Quadrant.
You might PM flippy and see if he will customize a kernel for you that goes that high. Let him know you will send a certified letter signed in blood and a video of you stating you release him of all liability for what ever town you destroy when your phone goes nuclear.
Seriously though, I'm willing to be he'll make it for kicks if you ask nicely - btw, call guiness so you can make it into the record books. Also, I'm not sure but if you flash a 'blank' kernel couldn't you just echo the speed and voltage in the 00banner file or whichever one it is?

[Q] Overclocking the Evo past 1.19

So, Im sure this was answered somewhere, and I searched all over.
With that said, why cant the Evo be overclocked past the standard 1.19 or 1.2? I know stability is an issue, but there are other ARM processors that can OC almost double. Is the Evo ARM processor just not able to handle anything past that?

You cannot compare the processor in teh Evo to other similar processors. Every single processor is different, and overclocking the evo past those speeds could brick it.
Why would you want to overclock that far? The Evo has no ventilation and crappy power management, even with an extended battery. You're taking an already unstable system and pushing it to the edge. Not only will your phone overheat and freeze, but you can permanently damage the hardware.
I know every processor is different and each one has their own limits.
There is always a risk of bricking and damaging the actual hardware, but what im asking is, in theory, and a practical test, can you push the evo processor past the 1.19 that seems to be the limit (im not talking about going huge, but is there a possibility of being able to hit the 1.5Ghz?). Because there are certain frequencies that are not stable, but ones slightly past that could be stable.
Just throwing it out there.

I would, but all the kernels that the Devs have developed have either a limit put on them, or they havent been able to allow it to OC that far

I was wondering this too. It would be nice to have the option to push it over 1.19ghz, I'll be the test dummy.
My Evo can handle 1228 fairly well but can tell its not as stable as say 1190. 1190 MHz is no prob...1267 usually crashes after a run or 3 in quadrant. 1113 runs niiiice for me and my 0004 evo

I can run 1190 just fine. Can a Dev possibly create a kernel that allows us to go past 1.2whatever.
I can't go up to 1.19 stabley
Gimme a couple a days to come up with a new sig that is cool.
if I pass 1190 endless bootloop.... then ya gotta be fast and turn that damn thing down
I can go to 1228 MHz with Tiamat but it will crash and reboot once you do a couple of things.

despite the meriad of answers you have gotten, I have been running my Evo on Sprint lovers Rom, and KiNgxKernel-Evo-12-BFS357-2.6.32.25-Flashable.zip for kernal.
I have been overclocked at 1267 since the day the kernal came out. it is singularly the only kernal that has allowed me to do this without ever crashing. OH, and I'm using
SetCPU 1267 on both min and max and scaling set to performance.

Not going too big? Going from 1.0 ghz to 1.5ghz on a phone is like going from a civic to a v8. Alot of computer cpu's dont even overclock 500 mhz. I think you're expecting a little too much from a phone. If you want more, go buy a dual-core cpu atrix 4g or something. I'm a speed freak myself when it comes to cpu overclocking (mainly on computers) but 1.113 is plenty for a phone. It even runs fine at 600mhz. Dont get me wrong, it would be cool to get it that high, but your phone would hate you lol

There are tons of kernals available in the Dev forum. I personally recommend Netarchy's kernals, but you are free to try any of them.

Until HTC drops source codes you will lose camera and other things.
How did you overclock the CPU? I have tried the setCPU and it does not work, I have my Phone rooted, installed the crazy UNleashed rom (since uninstalled) and could not get the setCPU to overclock. Even though UNleashed is made to do that, and I have read others getting over clocked. I am running Synergy now, which I do not think it can Overclock the EVO, but I would like to know how you fine folks are accomplishing this. I would love to go 1.1 right now.

If you're using a stock HTC kernel, hit menu inside SetCPU -> Perflock Disabler. Disable Perflock -> Set On Boot. Ta da.

please help

I have three evo's two are box stock and one is rooted, and is running cyanogen mod 7 kernel and rom.
The problem is the linpak and quadrant score on the modified evo are actually lower than the stock evo. For example the stock evo is doing a linpak of 30 while my modified evo is only doing about 21. Likewise my quadrant score tends to be pretty low. I have to clock my modified evo to the max to pass the stock evo.
What gives why is my evo overclocked to 1.13 with custom kernel and rom slower? I set the profile to performance.
A while back while using the tiamat kernel I set my overclock to 1.2 and the phone just froze and shutdown did I damage the phone. This happened several times because it kept on rebooting. Today I set the clock 1.190 and the phone froze and shutdown again. Right now I am running the Cyanogen Kernel and no issues so far but why is my phone so slow. Both evos don't have much apps at all only one or two(excluding the stock sprint apps on the stock evo)

I forgot to mention that on quadrant my modified evo ranks below evo 2.2+ on that quadrant score chart. Is my phone defective?

I'm just curious and want to learn more. Why do you guys overclock?
I see people avg's with my my current setting are around 40. Im thinking defective phone.
Should I flash the stock rom back on and un-root and bring the phone back?
rebooted the phone and now the score is just getting crazy low 6.509 mflops
Overclocking an EVO doesn't really do all that much. It's only 200 MHz more.
Desperately need help the touch screen doesnt work and this was all the sudden
Overclocking can cause some instability, like the locked-up screen. Pull the battery and wipe cache and dalvik.
And benchmarks aren't worth anything, they can be easily tricked. Real-world usage matters. Personally, I underclock for more battery

Search the general section for supercharge script. Go to first thread and then go to original thread linked in there. Follow steps and dl update8. Run it as explained. Enjoy ur extremely faster phone. It changes memory management and stuff

Tropicalbrit your right. I really forgot the point of the phone is to see how well it works daily. In all reality I love my evo even though its not getting a high score. I was mainly just curious to see if I damaged my processor from overclocking and crashing.
I booted into recovery and used CW and booted back into a copy of sense I had. I did that linpak test again a was suprised to see how it scored 31. That's higher than CM7! So does this mean my processor is not damaged?
I will eventually go back to CM7 because I love all the effects and battery life was extended significantly. I should just probably stick with the stock kernel.

Today I set the clock 1.190 and the phone froze and shutdown again. Right now I am running the Cyanogen Kernel and no issues so far but why is my phone so slow. Both evos don't have much apps at all only one or two(excluding the stock sprint apps on the stock evo)

You are running a governor which down clocks the processor. Quadrant does not tax the processor enough to hit your Max CPU speed. Set min and Max to 998 and test again. Try performance(for best results) or interactive/ondemand governers. You can change the settings in the CyanogenMod settings/ performance/ CPU settings menu.

Overclocking a phone doesnt do much other then cause over heating. If someone can give me a good reason to overclock I will gladly change my opinion.
Stock is set to optimal performance. IE HTC has performance tested the phone on this ROM and has proven no ill effects.
Custom ROMS are works in progress they have a lot of benefits and for some, are exactly what they are looking for.

Is it worth overclocking and undervolting Sprints galaxy s 2?

Running EL29 Odexed Blue Rom with EL26 stock kernal.
Just came from eVo 4G and have no idea if its worth it and if so what setting.
Any advice would be appreciated.

I've not done the undervolting yet but I'm thinking about it just still reading on what I want to do. I did however do the overclocks for a few days and imo only I really saw no need for it from the stock settings so I just went back to normal. The phone is fast enough for me even playing games that extra 1-2-3-400 mhz really didn't show that much of a difference.
Again this is my opinion others see the need for it I just didn't.

Thanks for you're opinion. Let me know how the undervolting goes if you decide to do it.. I wonder if vipermod would work with this device. I had it with my evo and it was pretty easy to use.

I think viper mad some stuff for the phone. I know he has a rom out for the phone already so maybe his tweaks are there you could always check the dev section.
My phone had freezing issues at anything higher than 1.4ghz, but even then the only real difference I saw was quadrant scores. Games ran the same, in fact I think the UI actually was choppier when OC'ed. Never really looked into it much though.
I don't even know why I tried it in the first place, I never said to myself "gee, this could be faster.." I guess coming from an HTC Hero it was a habit.
this phone does NOT need to be over clocked; it is so much faster than your Evo, that you won't believe it!
Undervolting and under clocking can give you extra battery life; do a search on the Dev thread, and you will learn lots about it..
