i don't believe i will have any problems in the root itself as unrevoked should work here like it did on my desire, but my question is my friend wants root to get rid of sprint bloat and wireless tethering and battery life help. pretty much the basic reasons lol. he doesn't want any major upkeep, just a stable rom since he is a police officer that he can use everyday and not lose any functions of the phone. since it isn't me with the phone the normal flash and test method is just kinda not possible so im looking for some input on the best rom to give him. any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Basically any of the Sense roms are fully functional. I prefer Myn's, but I like all of them, really. They all differ a bit with the theming, but they are all fully functional, and have most of the bloatware removed, with the option to install some sprint .apk's back if you'd like. If you want an unthemed fully functional rom (looks exactly like stock, with a few changes), then try the Sprint Lovers rom. I believe it does not have bloat removed, and has all of the sprint apps.
Keep in mind that AOSP roms also have 4g now, and hdmi is also working for sense and aosp. So I guess almost all roms are fully functional now, but I have less issues when I use sense roms.

Cool. We aren't in a 4g area so that's not a deal breaker either way. I'm gonna let him decide on the way the rom looks as I will worry more about the techie stuff. Thanks for the help.

I have tried many and the most stable is the Myn's RLS5. Has everything (4g, hdmi, etc.) and with Netarchy 131 more aggressive kernel it was awesome with battery life. For me anyway

Cool, I will check into that. One thing I was just noticing, there is alot of talk about prl/pri updating? Is that something that has to downloaded and flashed and how often does it occur? I'm on cellsouth and not familiar with it because on our network we just dial*228 and its done automatically rooted or not.

The PRL can be updated using a sense ROM thru settings and system update. The PRI will be flashed. All the radios can be found here. As far as the PRI goes, most people find 1.77 has most stable battery life.
I'm a fan of the Sprint Lovers rom; it's basically stock, but the Sprint bloatware is removable just like any other application, so you don't need to go into system/app/ to remove any of them. It also has a classy battery indicator with percentages and neat animations when charging and stuff.

I'm running CM6 now and I miss Sense, so I am going to install a rooted verison of the 2.2 OTA ASAP. The Evo is doesn't feel like the Evo without Sense, IMO.

wut ! lol CM6 = win
ASOP lacks polish in a few areas. SMS, dialer, contacts, call log.
It's beyond lack of polish really, it's like it was rushed and just thrown in as an after thought.
Sense in those same areas, especially the dialer, is much better.
All personal opinionthough as some people hate sense as much as I dislike ASOP.
You can easily find (often better) replacements for sense functions in the market. just sayin.

true story
Copy-Paste in Sense, it pwns n00bs
Once the official 2.2 comes out it will make AOSP all that much better. The little bugs that are currently in cm6 will be rather shortly I bet. There are only two features of sence that I like over also...cut and paste and no hassle Facebook sync of contacts with birthdays and calander events.
With the release of the oficial froyo, cyanogen would get better, cyanogen would have everything working...
Remember when roms didnt have everything working, after htc release the source and 1.47 OTA, then in days the roms get everything working...
I got over 1600 in quadrant and 49.6 in linpack using cm6... for me, the root its the way to go...
I think the real question is, are you willing to flash stock 2.2 and lose root, possibly forever?

It may lack polish, but Sense looks worn out.
Furthermore, although I agree the Sense dialer is better, the stock messaging app is better than the Sense version. The Sense version has a brief loading screen every time you open a thread, even if there is a single message in the tread. In addition, the stock messaging app shows your friends' gtalk status, which is a great feature.
Honestly, Sense means nothing to me.
Sense for WinMo makes sense...its need because Winmo navigation and such sucks. But Android does most of what Sense does in stock. I don;t see the big the deal about Sense.
Really it just depends on your personal preference. AOSP is great and has its weaknesses... as well as Sense. Try running both ROMs once they are officially released for a couple of days... see which one you like. Each user is different and uses their Evo differently than others... so it just comes down to preference.
Eep...DARN YOU PERSONAL PREFERNCE!!!
I was hoping someone would mention if there are huge bug fixes and more features compared to stock.

Yep...your linpack score will go up about 1-2% with cm6. Of course does it really make a difference? Don't know myself, going from baked snack to cm6 and linpack score of 9ish to 40ish didn't make a difference in anything I saw, and I missed Sense (personal preference and all).
The benefit of this forum and all the development here?
cm6 will only be one of many different 2.2 roms you will be able to try out. Have fun trying them all...I did, and I can't wait to try some new ones in the coming days and weeks! And it only takes 5 to 10th minutes to flash a new ROM and restore my titanium backup.

I love Cyanogen 6, with a few exceptions.
#1 I like Sense widgets, I have looked for replacements on the market, but there is just no replacement. I have liked Rosie since it was leaked on the G1 a year ago.
#2 4G is coming to my area soon, and although I am sure Cyanogen will have fixed it given the next roll out, Froyo + Sense is all I am really after.
#3 In my opinion, its people like Cyanogen, Toast and friends that push HTC/Google to push out these ROMs. Sprint even included their own wireless tether thanks to the community.
#4 With the New advocation of Cellphone Hacking, there will be leaps and bounds with the next ROMs. I suspect that this roll out is just the beginning.
The only thing I would like in my Sense ROM is the Dialer from Cyanogen.

if this idea was possible then NO NEVER.
but..
inconceivable!
CM6 is very good, but lacks here and there because it's based off 2.2 from the Nexus. Even if some of the functions of the Evo were made to work, the code might not be as clean as a native Evo rom. I'm thinking Cyanogen may move all of his *extra* developments for the Evo over to the native 2.2 base. I can't wait to see what he does with it now that he doesn't have to worry so much about making all the stock functions of the Evo work
Sense >>> AOSP, just disable Rosie and use Launcher Pro.
CyanogenMod is still buggy and incomplete so the OTA tomorrow will be a much better at least for a while.
Whats up guys? been following this site for a while.. but never joined lol because i didnt have a decent phone.. Well now i have a evo that i just rooted with unrevoked, as well as i have flashed over to Amon_ra. Now my question is (besides i will do a lot more reading but..) What do i do next? i am wanting my phone to run as it did stock (no glitching or crash's) I want to overclock the evo for more speed, I heard of cm6 & turbo ... (not sure of the full name) is pretty insane fps wise and the quickness it allows. If i could have figured this out by searching, i am sorry i am just very persistant lol.
Thanks again,

Well you can always just run the Stock rooted ROM and find a good kernel compatible with it.
try myns warm twopointtwo. wait for rls5 to come out or it will be glitchy with your hardware.
welcome to the root crew.
Welcome
If you are looking for something similar to stock I would personally try "Sprint Lovers Rom". You can install any kernel you want and download "Setcpu" to overclock your phone. My favorite rom is Myns Warm two point two, but I am waiting until he releases his next version which should be compatible with the new Radios, PRI, PRLS etc. You might also want to stay away from any of the Gingerbread based roms until they are fully ported over and bug free.
The rom you mentioned in your post is Cyanogen Mod. Although this is a good rom, it is also an AOSP rom which doesn't have HTC Sense. Therefore if your looking for something similar to stock but with all the tweaks and goodies you should choose a Sense Based Rom.
Best advise is to just keep flashing & flashing until you find the Rom that you like best. Everyone's tastes are different and there is no "Best Rom" out there, it just personal preference.
Hope this helps
Thank you all, who responded I am gonna try out the "Sprint lovers"
"Myna" roms far as the kernel I am not to sure about those just yet. Need to read up still.. lol So for now I am very open to suggestions . I look forward to expanding my knowledge on here with ya'll. I just don't want to brick my phone, I will die! Lol I love my evo!
P.s do I do the "Back up's" and "Nandroid" back up's, when changing roms and kernels?
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
first, DEFINETALLY DO A NANDROID BACKUP. as a general rule, backup whenever you like the state your phone is in (before you make a mod) and always have at least one backup handy always. titanium backups are helpful for changing roms because you can get all your app's data back. helpful on games and the like.
for kernels, i would suggest netarchy's 4.3. he says its is beta, but thats just because net likes his work to be perfect. it is as stable as anythign else. it has a nice sbc tweak as well. test many kernels. those are particular by phone. that is why people with the same phone get different battery life. what works well on one phone is terrible on another. so try netarchy's, maybe kingx's (off forum), and some others. i cant think of any more. i personally use netarchys though.
I don't know which to use I only care about battery life lol all roms feel the same to me, I would use sprint lovers but I don't want it to have the notification power control, anyone know how to use it?
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
Wow...Is there a question in there?
All the ROM's feel the same to you? Try Warm or Cyanogen. Best ROM's ever.
not quite sure what you are asking here... i'll be vague as well... use which ever ROM you try out that you like the best
try vaelpak rom, www.vaelek.com , you won't find better dev. support
even has a special settings app for it in the market for free called vaelpak settings check out the screen shots in market
Best battery life and the best rom is MIUI, hands down
If you want sense then mikfroyo is the way to go

If you are only looking at those 2 roms i would say fresh. You say you dont want notification bar power controls.... almost every custom rom now has this.
Calk's Evio rom does have a mod that you can flash to remove it. It probably will work for any sense rom but i would nand droid first since this is untested. Additionally if the rom you use is themed it will likely remove the theme. Personally i am a fan of Evio and The New Koni's Elite Rom is out standing. Almost all sense roms are going to feel the same the fact is they are built off the same base. The only real difference is tweaks made for performance and the theme they put on. The tweaks wont visibly see they are behind the scenes the theme you will.
your last option is to read the post on how to modify the framework to get the notification bar work in reverse and remove it yourself.

I would totally disagree with that statement.
I for one love having an app drawer instead home screens with blank spots, and 100% working bluetooth, and receiving MMS, and using HDMI...but then again that is just me.
MIUI is a new and exciting concept, and every release they put out i flash it on my phone until i realize that it's still broken to the point that i don't want to use it anymore (usually 1 day), and then i flash back to FRESH or some other sense rom with a SBC kernel.
Oh and working USB tether is a MUST for me! Which MIUI does NOT do...at least not with WinXP machines.
I agree MIUI is a very different rom but i would not go so far as saying it is the best rom. In fact i dont think anyone can say what the best rom is because it is all personal preference.
Personally i didnt like MIUI
i totally agree. i need to start cooking roms. cuz every rom i try, even stock i have something visual or performance wise wrong. but i did enjoy fresh over sprint lovers fyi
K thanks guys sprint lovers wouldn't boot up

Whoa, all roms feel the same to you? I'm almost blown away by this comment. How long have you been using the Evo and messing with roms?
I agree with someone else here, MIUI is my favorite. Ava has my favorite sense rom.
God, so many great ROMs! I have a small selection that I put on my phone and those that I root for others.
My preferred custom Sense ROMs (not necessarily better or worse than any others) are EViO and Azrael, each slightly different but both great. Using EViO tonight.
Preferred Stock-ish ROM would be StockTurbo. Perfect for people like my wife!
Sense/AOSP tween ROM is Vaelpak..am excellent, very eccentric ROM.
Current fav AOSP, and what's backup up in my nandroid folder, is KingsROM Ultra Blue HAZE GBv10. I know, its a GB ROM, but I haven't had any issues with it, I haven't found anything that didn't work, and damn I love the GB cursor finger in text input fields!
This probably doesn't help anyone, but thank you for your time anyway.
I'm receiving an EVO4G for free from a friend who runs a warehouse and was wondering what I need to know about it (nothing too basic about android, im already a tech savvy htc hero user) for when I get it, eg:
is it a pain to root?
best ROMs?
MIUI Available?
Best Kernels/Tweaks?
Any common bugs or optimal settings, anything that you thing any EVO user should have, Im fine with testing very experimental work and such.

Easy to root with unrEVOked
roms will vary person to person(opinion). i run rooted stock.
yes, muiu is available.
kernels(kinda opinion) will have to be compatible with the rom and there are many options.
The EVO is very painless to root. There are so many ROMs available for the thing it's insane just a quick google search will get you going but I suggest trying VaelPak 3.2 RC2, very stable and reliable support www.vaelek.com
miui is available.

Alright, thanks guys. I've used unrEVOked before, but not for EVO.
As for ROMs, I despise sense so that’s not an option for me. As long as MIUI is available Im sure I'll be fine though. I've heard about some ROMs not supporting 4G or HD Video, and that's huge for me because I live in a 4G area and tether A LOT. I realized the plethora of ROMs and didn't have the time to search and decide through all of them so I made a thread and will compare some of the most polished ones. Thanks

Wow great thread, thanks
MIUI is a great ROM, however you'll be sad to hear there's no 4g available yet... and there may never be. I'd still suggest trying it out and making a nandroid backup of it so you can switch to it if you ever feel like it & don't need 4g.
CM7 seems like the best rom for you, or you could try one of its offshoots. Vaelpak would be another good option - it's a Sense-less, Sense based rom.

I'll most likely go with CM7, I wish MIUI had 4G. I may do what you did or maybe dual boot MIUI if possible. There's another ROM by Myn that looked nice and fast that I may try.
Back story: I am coming over from the Epic. Don't want to talk about it, but as you may well know, the Epic is rather easy to use considering there are like 4 roms.
Current situation: Been reading this board for the past two weeks. There are so many roms and threads that my head is spinning. I figured out how to root. I rooted using unrevoked. I then created a backup in clockwork. All I have done at this point is used Titanium to remove(freeze) all the stuff I don't want. So far the phone is working superb. The GPS is fantastic, the apps are giving me no lag or problems, and everything just works. I have actually grown to like the Sense UI. I like the widgets and such.
Now, like most people on this forum, even though everything is working correctly, I get antsy and am completely against the phrase "if it ain't broke, don't fix it". I have been reading about how CyanogenMod improves the Camera and Video. As the Evo is my main camera, it would be nice to have it up to its capabilities. However, I would prefer to stay on the sense UI. I would also prefer to stay on froyo for now. Oh, and battery life wouldn't hurt, even though I get pretty good battery life on stock.
Is this possible, or am I dreaming?
Lastly, I am kind of confused about WiMax, Radio version, and rom version. I am currently on rom version 3.70.651.1, radio version 2.15.00.11.19, and I am unsure of wimax version. When I go through the roms in dev section, it doesn't seem to mention anything about this. Does this mean that pretty much every rom that is not gingerbread is at my disposal?
And the real lastly, on the epic, Rom Manager does not work. You must flash roms from clockwork every time. Does it actually work on the Evo? Can I just switch back and forth from rom to rom through the rom manager?
TIA
swany

Get amon 2.3 you can do proper wipes so you won't have issues flashing roms. You already have latest radio and wi max stick to the latest roms mik froyo is sense based so is myn just don't download old roms from the bottom of the dev wiki there built and use old radios and wi max .
You can use gingerbread roms with out screwing with your radios such as CM 7 and so on .
This one looks like everything I want except the better camera stuff. Will it work with my setup, and it doesn't mention that it removes Swype(which I must have).
