Fresh or sprint lovers? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I don't know which to use I only care about battery life lol all roms feel the same to me, I would use sprint lovers but I don't want it to have the notification power control, anyone know how to use it?

Wow...Is there a question in there?

All the ROM's feel the same to you? Try Warm or Cyanogen. Best ROM's ever.

not quite sure what you are asking here... i'll be vague as well... use which ever ROM you try out that you like the best

try vaelpak rom, www.vaelek.com , you won't find better dev. support
even has a special settings app for it in the market for free called vaelpak settings check out the screen shots in market

Best battery life and the best rom is MIUI, hands down
If you want sense then mikfroyo is the way to go

If you are only looking at those 2 roms i would say fresh. You say you dont want notification bar power controls.... almost every custom rom now has this.
Calk's Evio rom does have a mod that you can flash to remove it. It probably will work for any sense rom but i would nand droid first since this is untested. Additionally if the rom you use is themed it will likely remove the theme. Personally i am a fan of Evio and The New Koni's Elite Rom is out standing. Almost all sense roms are going to feel the same the fact is they are built off the same base. The only real difference is tweaks made for performance and the theme they put on. The tweaks wont visibly see they are behind the scenes the theme you will.
your last option is to read the post on how to modify the framework to get the notification bar work in reverse and remove it yourself.

I would totally disagree with that statement.
I for one love having an app drawer instead home screens with blank spots, and 100% working bluetooth, and receiving MMS, and using HDMI...but then again that is just me.
MIUI is a new and exciting concept, and every release they put out i flash it on my phone until i realize that it's still broken to the point that i don't want to use it anymore (usually 1 day), and then i flash back to FRESH or some other sense rom with a SBC kernel.
Oh and working USB tether is a MUST for me! Which MIUI does NOT do...at least not with WinXP machines.

I agree MIUI is a very different rom but i would not go so far as saying it is the best rom. In fact i dont think anyone can say what the best rom is because it is all personal preference.
Personally i didnt like MIUI

i totally agree. i need to start cooking roms. cuz every rom i try, even stock i have something visual or performance wise wrong. but i did enjoy fresh over sprint lovers fyi

K thanks guys sprint lovers wouldn't boot up

Whoa, all roms feel the same to you? I'm almost blown away by this comment. How long have you been using the Evo and messing with roms?
I agree with someone else here, MIUI is my favorite. Ava has my favorite sense rom.

God, so many great ROMs! I have a small selection that I put on my phone and those that I root for others.
My preferred custom Sense ROMs (not necessarily better or worse than any others) are EViO and Azrael, each slightly different but both great. Using EViO tonight.
Preferred Stock-ish ROM would be StockTurbo. Perfect for people like my wife!
Sense/AOSP tween ROM is Vaelpak..am excellent, very eccentric ROM.
Current fav AOSP, and what's backup up in my nandroid folder, is KingsROM Ultra Blue HAZE GBv10. I know, its a GB ROM, but I haven't had any issues with it, I haven't found anything that didn't work, and damn I love the GB cursor finger in text input fields!
This probably doesn't help anyone, but thank you for your time anyway.

What makes you prefer Baked Snack? I'm not doubting your choice, just curious what makes it better than the others.
Been using Calk's builds for a long time now. Seems my taste in ROMs is very similar to his. Keep in mind "the best" is extremely subjective.

Of course... It seems there are a few popular ones out there, and then a lot of "second tier" ROM's. What makes Calk's builds "the best" for you?

I like the combination of performance and battery life of the kernel he chose to use. He also does an awesome job getting a bunch of graphical changes for the "cool" factor too.
Beyond the ROM, Calk contributes a lot of other things to the community. He's been making kitchen and kitchen development tools for the Windows Mobile groups for a while and I was very pleased to see him come to the Android team at the same time I made the leap. It's a big change for people like me that have been Windows Mobile sideline hackers for a while and it's really nice to see a familiar face.

Good info... I'm currently running CM6 and loving it, but I'm torn what to try next... EViO, Baked Snack and VaelPak are all possibilities.
None of the ROM's really have the exact thing I want. Ideally, I'd like a ROM that has the following:
- Sense E-mail App
- Sense Calendar App
- Sense Lock Screen
- Sense Status Bar (with Custom Battery Icon)
- AOSP Contacts & Dialer
- AOSP Messaging (SMS/MMS)
- AOSP Gallery
- 4G Support
- FM Radio
- WiFi/Wired Tether
- Sprint Bloatware Removed (apart from Sprint TV)
- ADK Laucher (easy to add after the fact)
Any ideas on how to get this? I wish I was a Dev... I would build my own

I would think that this wouldn't be that tough. Try starting with a Sense ROM, pull out the dialer/messaging/gallery and whatever else you don't want, then install the AOSP apps you want. I'm sure the apk's can be found around here.

Is it as simple as just uninstalling the Sense apk's that I don't want and installing the AOSP ones? If so, I can probably restore the apps I want from a Titanium backup of CM6. For some reason I thought it was more involved that that - especially with the AOSP Contacts & Dialer.

Agree entirely with Dissenter. Calk brings a lot to the table.
Really enjoyed Hero's early EVO work and Baked is still great. Also used Cyanogen on my G1 forever, but Calk's stuff has been stable, fast and clean (at least for me) as long or longer than anyone else on EVO. It is a beautiful thing. I had problems with most of the other ROMs, but for the EVO, Hero and Calk always seem to have there kitchens working.

So, what would you say are the pros/cons of EViO vs. Baked Snack?
there is a fine line between the "best rom" and my "favorite rom"
best i have had was a stock rooted rom, granted it wasnt fast but it had everything working and no bugs that i could find ...
my fav has been CM6 ... fast and snappy ... but lacking the Fm radio and 4G i disire ...
i have a hard time finding a big difference between sense roms ... but thats just me, i'm slow on this stuff still
I like Fresh 3.2

Ya, where's the love?
I prefer my evo burnt for sure.
modded fresh for me. Dude is on point with his ROMs.
Gotta have my Apps2SD support.
Thinking about coming out with my own ROM based solely off of his as a base.
Evio cured my flashaholic's issues for a while, but with Baked Snack update and the Evio update its tough, i have to give the slight edge to fresh right now because of the new release, that thing is sick. I am pumped once that thing hits the street its going to be on! Too many choices is a good thing as i think the Evo is THE android device to have with all the Dev support
My two cents
1. Fresh 3.28
1.a Evio
1.a Baked Snacks
YMMV

How can I make my phone faster without losing features?

I just started flashing but it seems with all these roms something is wrong. I really just like the roms for the speed. But everyone has cons like no front camera on Miui or no mms just random things. Does Cm6 have anything like cons?

Well as far a CM no 4g or hdmi. But I've used Cm, MIUI, Fresh, Myns, ect... found out I really like having sense based...for now. With sense based you can easily update pri's and prl's and access all the phone ## codes unlike an aosp rom . And you can still use 4g and hdmi and such, pretty much everything that comes included with stock but enhanced. If you havent tried Myn's, give it a shot, I think its pretty zippy also your kernel can play alot in the speed of your phone. Hope something in that mess of words helps.
Edit: also thought i'd add, I use Myn's Sense Based rom but use Launcher Pro Plus instead of stock rosie launcher. I find it much more customizable and better looking, imo.
Thanks a lot. Sorry im really new to all this but what's a kernal? Like in normal words what's it do? And do they take away hdmi 4g camera or anything?

As of now all sense roms (myns, fresh, mikfroyo, etc.) Have everything working. The camer,camcorder,4g,hdmi....everything works. They just remove bloatware and speed up there system. And most come with bonuses like usb tethering. Stick to those and youll have everything you want. And yes the kernels are what make everything work. Once aosp kernels support 4g,camera etc. then they can make it work in there aosp rom (cyan, miui). The best way to describe kernels is....the kernel is the motor in your car. Some are v8s that are fast but use more fuel(battery). Some are v6s right. Some kernels (motors) wont run well in your car(phone) some will work awesome...
Evo - Myn 2.2 RLS 3 - Clockwork - HBoot .76
Also, every phone is different. Not every Rom will act exactly the same, nor every kernel...you kinda hafta flash for yourself and see which works best. For me, mikfroyo is the fastest sense-based Rom I have used, for you Myn's or vaelpak or something else may work best, you'll just hafta flash and see.

Also depending on where you live and what you use your phone for plays a factor. I like MIUI or Cyanogen because of the awesome features AND I don't really have a need for 4g or HDMI.
I've recently used Myn's 2.2 and Fresh 3.5 for long periods of time. Both are EXTREMELY reliable and stable, and I think they would work fine with any phone. Like r.storm85 mentions, it comes down to a good kernel that will work well on your phone. All phones are different. For example, my phone somehow keeps rebooting with a "Fresh rom/KingKlick #10 and up kernel" combo.
So find something that works for you. Also remember, it takes a few days for your phone, rom, and kernel to start working together, so don't give up on something only after a few hours.

Think of the kernel as the heart of the operating system. It's the base of the OS that everything else is built off of. Modified kernels offer many different options. Some allow you to underclock to conserve battery life, others allow you to overclock to squeeze even more power out of that snapdragon processor, and some others allow you to change and modify options that were unalterable or hidden in the stock kernel (like cyanogen allowing you to force your phone to roam only).
Just as with anything there are pro's and cons to all the different mods. Just do a lot of reading (sounds like you already have a good start) and testing with the different kernels and roms out there. Some combos work great together, some just don't play well with one another at all. Eventually you will find one that suits you, and tinkering is what makes the android platform so amazing. Have fun, flash safe, and always always make good nandroid backups.

[Q] Trying to escape Cyanogen, any suggestions?

I have been using Cyanogen since CM6 and I have gotten to a point where I absolutely hate it. My GPS is hit or miss (usually miss), and 90% of the time I get a call I end up missing it due to my screen not waking up. I wont even get started on the FC's
So I am on the hunt for another good rom, there is only a few things I'm looking for in a rom other than what stated above to be working. GB of course, not a fan of sense roms, and it has to look clean. I am admittedly very picky about how my ui looks, currently I am using the Matted blues theme, with ADW EX and I exclusively use the hidden panel with a wood dock look to it, and I use the Faenza icon theme.
Im open to any and all suggestions, even if it is a sense rom, just help with a link to a SBC kernel along with it, because I know nothing of sense kernels. And I'm even open to MIUI if its finally stable.
If you wana stay on AOSP, you could try decks rom [a cleaned up version of CM7], salvage mod [bare bone AOSP], or MIUI...AOSP with a twist. If you want a sense rom, I'd go with the synergy-kingdom sense 3.0 rom.
As for kernels, for AOSP, I strongly recommend the Tiamat kernel, along with the vipermod. PM if you need anything else.

I have given serious consideration to decks rom, but is it a steady rom or is it just a fly by night build?
I tried synergy kingdom, I was fairly impressed once I installed ADW. Sense 3.0 for me was like playing a PSX game, everytime I turned a corner there was a loading screen, lol. But I was unable to get it to look the way I like, I want as little white on the screen as possible, aside from text.
SavagedZen Mod was horrible for me, and It hasn't been updated from RC4 in months.
As far a MIUI goes I'm trying it again, even though on the front page of the site there is yet another thing broken with it.
I have also tried Vealpak's new AOSP GB ROM, it was ok. anybody have any experience themeing it?
EDIT:
As I type im doing a nandroid in RA about to mess with MIUI for a little bit, and then Im going to flash decks rom. I found the main forum for it, and your right allot of people seem to be going ape **** for it.

Deck's is fairly stab;e, so you shouldn't have any problems out of it. And well the sense 3.0 roms are monster, so it can 'sorta' be expected. if you wanted to try that, you could try the supercharger script to free up some memory. I stopped using savagedzen kernels months ago once they only went to sbc, went to Tiamat...never looking back. As for MIUI > http://romsmaster.miui.us/ Just scroll down to the evo, and you can get the latest rom. I haven'y used it, though to theme is fairly basic: you can download a theme, and flash it via theme manager, or flash it old school in recovery. You can download icon packs as well if you wanted to use them.

I, too, and looking to get away from CM as I have used it for a very long time and, identically to you I am having serious issues with the GPS and the screen not waking up.
I'm gonna try both Decks & MUIU tonight and see which I like best. My friend at work as MUIU and the only complaint I've had with it is the way it mimics iOS. I hate apple and don't know if that'll be a deal-breaker for me, but here we go!

[GUIDE] Noob's Guide #2: Choosing the Right ROM

So, you just rooted your super awesome Android phone, thanks to Rivera82falcon and his awesome guide? You saw my awesome guide for flashing ROMS, and wanted to try it, but didn't know where to begin? Well, you're in the right place.
Also, don't blame me if your phone explodes into a million pieces and one gets stuck in your eye. Nothing you do is my fault. Well, here we go.
STEP ONE: AOSP or Sense?
You probably know what Sense is, but you might not know what AOSP is. It stands for Android Open Source Project. Basically, you are getting a base of stock gingerbread. Now let's talk about the advantages and disadvantages.
AOSP is far faster than most Sense ROMs, and offers more customization as far as themes and kernels. Keep in mind, you can't just install AOSP and put the sense launcher on it. It won't work. With AOSP, you can get Gingerbread, Froyo, or even Ice Cream Sandwich looks for your phone.
Sense, on the other hand, is usually slower, and sometimes offers limited customization when compared to the Theme engines for AOSP. Sense can feel sluggish sometimes, but can be very fast if the ROM is well built. It is not as streamlined as AOSP. On the other hand, you get all the awesome sense apps, like weather, clock, and calendar.
Personally, I switch back and forth between Sense an AOSP. They both have their advantages and disadvantages.
STEP TWO: How Much Is Working?
Many people see an awesome looking ROM and it says ALPHA or BETA, but that doesn't necessarily mean anything to people. They flash it and wonder why their radio doesn't work, or why WiFi won't connect. ALPHA ROMs are ROMs that are in the early testing phase and may have key functions broken or missing. Don't go on a vacation with an ALPHA ROM on your phone. Never flash one if you depend on your phone for your job. A BETA ROM is a ROM that is nearing the end of testing. It may still have broken features, but the core functions such as Radio, Data, WiFi, and SMS are often working. Don't flash this ROM if you are expecting a finished product, you will be disappointed. These ROMs are usually fairly slow as well. A vX.x.x ROM (ex: v1.0.1) is released to the public but probably still has some bugs like Bluetooth, MMS, or some other random issues. This ROM still might not be the fastest, but is still easily able to function. Anybody can flash these ROMs. RLSX (ex: RLS1) ROMs are released and are nearly finished. They may have some small bugs or not be fully optimized, but they are nearly perfect. Final ROMs are complete, and you can expect no further changes, usually.
STEP THREE: What Features/Look Does It Have?
Not all Sense and AOSP ROMs are created equal. Many look very different from each other and have very different features. For example, a Sense 2.1 and Sense 3.5 ROM are very different, and CM7 is very different from PoolParty. Read the entire OP and look at any screenshots provided. Make sure you like the look, so you don't waste time flashing it if you hate the look. That said, there is nothing wrong with flashing a ROM just to try it out.

I can vouch for Virtuous Roms. All their work is bug free and visually appealing and user friendly.
Nice write up AC.

I agree Collinjames, the new Affinity ROM is very nice, battery life is insanely good, and it's nearly bug free. My softkeys stopped lighting up so I went back to 2HD RLS1.1
What about including custom kernals AOSP and Sense?
Skyraider Zeus rom is worthy of the incredible, Incredible 2. No bugs which is the most important thing, has never crashed ever on me, that is incredibly important. I don't ever actually use sense exept for the great camera, lockscreen, and weather. But this rom is a no brainer really.
It gives you every option you could think of and has no downside.
I wish this nice little article was up when I was wasting my time trying out buggy roms.
I just feel puzzle about which rom to choose at that moment, thanks a lot for your guide.
liquid 3.x is a good aosp rom as well
Thanks for the post, I like how you broke down the advantages of each.. this has proven to be very helpful.
While i agree with you aosp choices..i think everyone should at least try miui...most customizable rom I've ever used...and looks great with go launcher or launcher pro.

I will add an "other people's recommendations section" soon. Just because I dont necessarily agree with all of these *cough*MIUI*cough*, but I want people to get all the input they can.
Thanks for posting this. As someone who is new to rooting phones this information is very useful.

Yeah, I tried MIUI for a few days. Although I like how customizable it is with all the themes available I found it too buggy. I kept getting lockups and reboots. I hoped the 11.18 release would have helped but it actually made it worse. Also, the lack of an app drawer was very hard to get used to. I'm still not sure I like that concept. I guess it's too iPhone-ish for me.

Sorry but I'm not sure. I would say what ever 11.18 has. I'm still learning all there is to know about rooting so I never paid attention to kernel versions.

I'm running MIUI 1.11.18 right now along with the aerovan .7 bfs kernel. I haven't had a single lockup. Running buttery smooth.

I also run MIUI 1.11.18 an never had any problems I also use areoevan .07bsf kernel. This rom an skyraider are the two most stable roms I have run.

If you try it with a traditional launcher you will love it lol

ok, so since I'm still learning here, when you flash a ROM does the kernel get changed too? Or is this something you have to flash in addition to the ROM?
yes it will change it to which ever kernel the rom
is supplied with. You can find the custom kernel you wish to use an then just flash it after the rom just make sure it's for aosp or sense which ever you choose to run.

[Q] Looking for new Rom and help with some other stuff!

looking for a new ics style rom. main focus is i really want it to be snappy but save the battery well on my evo 4g. i used to run CM, then decks, then decks reloaded, then tried strike and it wasnt working well, now running sonicFlame and its not to bad. just wondering what else is out there that im overlooking? should i switch to the newest CM? also what is now the best kernel? im using a tiamat sbc i think.
another question i had is there anywhere to get a nice pack of apps and utilites like decks reloaded comes with or would my best bet to be to back them up with TB and load them on the new rom i like?
also i really love having a unified theme. i used crystal full system theme but i am now looking for one that matches the ics blue. so if there is a full system theme anyone knows of or any icon packs that would go with an ics blue rom please post! is there any tuts or links someone has that i can use to try and start making my own theme or how to make icons and use them?
and does anyone know why my lock screen on SonicFlame rotates even when i have rotate off and the screen locked portrait? just bugging me, along with my button lights only working for a bit when i flash a rom then never coming back. happened the last couple roms i used. any ideas?
sorry for so many questions and thanks in advance for the help!!
Well I will give you my thought on the button lights. I have noticed that if you use auto insurance brightness they don't work very well. Also when you go below a certain brightness they go off.
For ics kernel the Mason series is your best bet. I have not flashed many ics roms so not much help there. The few I tried were miui and evervolv.
A little hint. If you like customization I would say try out an miui rom. Then put on an ics style launcher. I hate the miui one myself too much like ios. Now you just find the launcher theme you like. You have a killer looking ics with the bonuses that you get with miui. You can filter calls with white lists, black lists, and calls not in phone book. Also set times to block calls. Built in backup app status bar toggles, and other miui only features.
Jlmancuso.

cool thanks i have never looked into those before ill have to find one!
There are older ICS builds on goo.im
under miui and supersonic. The current jb release on roms.miui.us is laggy on lockscreen but not too bad elsewhere.
If you want pm me any questions you might have. I have tried just about every ROM on the site.

Why not just go back to reloaded? You may have given up on that one to soon..
Yeah. my button lights crapped out the first time I flashed an ICS ROM and never went back to working the same, no matter what I run now.
If you want the apps you have now, just back them up with TB or My Backup Pro.
