[Q] SD card failing? - Droid Incredible Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

When I tried to update my CM nightly (think it was 14, was last week some time) build to use the then current incredikernel (wiped cache and dalvik as I was supposed to), my phone got stuck after booting. The checking sd card icon was up in the taskbar, and trying to unlock or do anything else caused things to freeze. No amount of waiting helped.
I was able to use recovery to restore a previous build from that same SD card, but had the same issue with a known working image.
I popped out the SD card and was able to boot fine. I then used recovery to format the SD card, and it loaded again- so I figured something got borked during the kernel update somehow.
In any case, now when I start up my phone it unlocks fine, but the checking SD card remains for over a minute, where it used to only take a few seconds.
I think I'll be buying a new SD card, but wanted to ask around to see if anyone else ran into anything like this, or if perhaps this is expected for new CM7 nightlies or something.
I forget the brand, but it it some generic 8GB SD card, worked fine since I got the phone when it was first released...

Turned out to be that formatting the card from within cwm recovery 3.0.0.8 seems to have used very small allocation size, which males the startup validity check stuff take forever.
I formatted via windows instead, and works much nicer now.

am I in trouble ?

Hi,
I've got problem to launch Modaco ROM 2.8. Previously i had 2.7 and I wanted to check out Motion Blur ROM. I have done nandroid backup and flashed new rom. Because i couldn't login to Motoblur account (It's needed to use this ROM) I decided to restore previous ROM. I think by mistake i pressed nandroid buckup again and i lost my Backup. I managed to copy 2.8 ROM to my SD but when i removed safety USB storage I noticed SD card icon with information that my Card is possible damaged. Since then i had problems to us SD. Windows wanted to format my card every time I tried access. I checked what it like in Partition manager. It showed me only one partition Fat 32 1.8GB (should be 1.5GB Fat32 and Ext3 + swap partitions) So I format it again and created new linux partitions. Windows could read SD but Mobile still showed Damaged Card. So I restarted Mobile and now i can't do anything. It's going to Hero Logo (waves robots) and then going to HTC Logo and then goes back to Hero Logo. Is it just because my SD is broken and buying new SD will solve the problem ? or did I break my mobile permanently ?
Thanks
Sorry for my poor English
///edit I just removed SD and it's working . Need to buy new SD
i've experienced a very similar problem where it reported my sdcard to be damaged and worse my phone won't even boot.
what i did was to remove the sdcard and it booted fine ( i had mcr 2.5 working), then noticed sdcard reported no issue. then simply rebooted to recovery, wiped, and applied mcr2.8 zip file.

Had a similar problem didnt have booting problems though, solved the problem in exactly the same way as kroosh. The problem stems from the swapper app which did come as part of the rom but is now only optional.
I had swapper too & guess you are right.
Unfortunately the 2.8 is getting sluggish and not sure if it was the swapper as well. I will try to restore 2.5 and see how it behaves
My card wasn't recognized because it was formatted in wrong format. I managed to install new recovery image v1.2.3 and i have created partition from there and its working fine now.
Hi
I had the same problem with my hero, if you disconnect the usb wrong ect. And the "damaged SD" error appears. I first didn't know what I was doing wrong, (was new to Android) and I re-formatted my SD card twice.
Anyway, after a while, I relize just turn off the phone, remove card, wait a few seconds, and put all back together.
Hope this works for you

[Q] Micro SD card causes Desire to hang?

Back story
I was using my GPS this morning, everything was running fine, after typing in my new destination my phone froze.
I removed the battery and started it back up again, everything loaded, (A bit slower than usual) started up navigation, and it froze again.
So I thought something just corrupted and I should do a quick wipe and reinstall my Leedriod (Might as well update to the latest version - 2.1a, was on 2.0b I think)
Anyway, some commands where successful, some not, I figured out my memory card (16gb, team group, class 6) was the root of the issues.
Although I could install a new rom (Which was on the mem card already) I can't seem to access the memory card, and any program which tries will hang (Titanium backup, maps ect)
If I try and format through bootloader, it'll freeze.
If I insert the card into a card reader, windows will pick it up for a couple of seconds, I can see the contents, but it'll disappear when I try and copy anything from it.
I also can't format it from windows.
I've also found the the card gets very hot in the reader (A couple degrees more and it'll burn my fingers!.
Is my card FUBAR?
Is there something else I could try?
I ordered the card from DX so it's going to be a big pain to try and RMA it.

Nandroid backups get corrupted right after the process is done, broken SD?

I used to make backups before with amon-ra-recovery 2.0.0 and everything was great, I could restore everytime I wanted and I didn't have any issues.
Suddenly, since some time, things started to go wrong. Not a single nandroid backup I do is working, they all get corrupted immediately and I get that "error, run nandroid via adb" or something similar, error, you probably know it. The md5 is corrupted on most of the .img files and even if I change them to be correct, I manage to go through the entire restore process, but the system is whacked, it either goes into bootloop, either it boots fine but sd-ext is gone and all the screens are empty like I never had any widgets or app shortcuts on them, and sometimes I'm lucky and I have only some minor bugs which are fixed by reflashing the ROM without wiping anything.
I can't remember if this happend since I updated to ra recovery 2.0.1 (I am now back to 2.0.0) or since I changed the SD card into a class 6 one. The partition is 1gb ext4, it is done properly (I repartitioned with ra recovery 2.0.1 a few weeks ago and still problems, the previous partition was made by g-parted), SD seems to be working well, I really have no idea what is causing this.
I am willing to try clockwork mod recovery today, can anyone provide a source for their latest version please? I can't find anything on google except for some old threads.
which card are u using ?
The new one. 8gb class 6, I don't see what difference does it make...
I am now getting a problem that I also had before I repartitioned the SD card last time, after doing a nandroid backup today, now I am getting an error telling me that card is read-only. I can't mount it to PC (I mean i can have disk drive on phone but when trying to open it from PC it says its not found). Last time I had this problem I couldn't delete sd-ext.rar from the nandroid backup folder, it said it was corrupted and I couldn't do anything, just like now. Can't connect to PC, can't unmount the SD from phone and on available space it says read-only, that is the problem, how can I solve this? I'm really not in the mood to repartition all over, is the card broken?
Edit: I am now going to report a problem that I've only had on this SD card so far, never on the old one that comes with the phone. So I rebooted the phone and now the sd-ext isn't recognized on the phone, apps that were installed on it don't show up in app-drawer and some widgets that were also on sd-ext don't display on the screen, says problem loading widget. I had this problem once in a while with most of the ROMs I tried, ever since I switched to this card (i think it happened in the 1st day this card arrived). When I reboot the phone (either I normally reboot it or the battery dies), sometimes this thing pops up. It doesn't say any errors, its just that the ext partition isn't recognized, but the fat32 is ok, I can access the SD card's content via root explorer for example and I can even mount it to the PC and explore it from the notebook, but ext partition isn't recognized.
Like I said, this is only on this new card, doesn't happen to the old one, and it happened even in the 1st day it came and was inserted in the phone. I also repartitioned it and same problem, both times did it correctly exactly as I did with the old card and everything was ok on that one.
The exact problem is "mounted read-only - the sd card has an unexpected problem. Tapping...(can't read any further cause it doesn't fit entirely in the notification bar)". It happens when I try to do a complete titanium backup (for all system data+user apps).
Common any opinions? Im really worried.
So i've done a nandroid backup with clockwork mod 2.5.0.7 and its corrupted as well. Just after it finished the backup, I mounted in usb mass storage mode and went to check the md5 images, they are corrupted. I'm going to make a final repartition today with g-parted, and if it's not gonna work then I will probably switch to my old class 2 card that came with the phone, I'm only dissapointed that I cannot prove this SD card I recently got is broken, the fat32 is working but sd-ext has problems, they probably won't believe this and won't replace it

[Q] TROUBLE: SD Card not partitioning with ROM Manager

Hi
I am having trouble with my SD Card on HTC Desire. The whole problem started this morning, so let me walk you through the whole thing:
I installed CM7 nightly # 24 last night. My phone was working absolutely fine before that. It was late so I just set ROM Manager to make a backup and install the new ROM, and went to bed. When I woke up, it had installed and was working fine. Then I dunno for what reason I had to restart my phone. And when I did, all hell broke loose!
The phone rebooted and gave the error message that there is a blank memory card in the phone!!! I restarted the phone a few more times, took out the card and cleaned it, everything, but it just won't recognize it. I went into recovery and mounted the SD card to connect to computer. But the windows (win7 x64) gave error message that the card has an unrecognized or corrupted file system. Since the only backup I had was on SD card itself, I realized that I was officially screwed.
So I formatted the card in the windows. And now it was showing the full 7.37GB size of the card. Meaning it had also somehow removed the 512MB sd-ext partition I had on it as well. But I said fine, no issues. I can reinstall all the apps and settings etc.
So I installed the CM7 RC2 just to be safe, and went into ROM Manager to make the ext partition. I set it to 512MB, swap size 0MB, and the phone restarted into recovery. It started the partition, but only after 3 or so seconds, it rebooted. I checked, but it hadn't partitioned the card! Weird...
I figured maybe there is a problem with the format Windows did, so I formatted the card once again from recovery. Just to be safe, I wiped everything and reinstalled CM7 RC2. But again, no luck with partitioning. Installed Nightly # 23 to get the latest patches and all, but again no luck.
Now I made a GParted USB boot drive, and tried partitioning with it. But GParted also wont partition it. There was this attention symbol next to the drive. I double clicked the drive and it showed this error in the next window. I took a picture of it from a friend's phone, attached below.
I also took a snapshot from within gparted, but it saved it at some /home/something location and I cannot find it. So if the attached image is not clear enough, or if you know where to look for that snapshot, please let me know and I'll post that. Its not in the boot USB drive or SD Card, and its not in my C: drive either.
I would really appreciate if someone could tell me what the hell is going on with my SD card, and how to fix it. Its a Class 2 card, about 6 months old, and I really hope it isn't dead.
Seriously? No one??
Use the recovery and not Rom Manager or use Gparted of something like Easeus.
I use partition wizard on the computer for partitioning

SD card unmounting

My 16GB SD card was randomly unmounting in my phone (Desire HD) I assumed it was a bad card as my PC would not detect it in a card reader. I got a new 16GB card today and it has started randomly unmounting in the phone, I get a warning message and the sd card vanishes.
This does not happen when i use an old 2GB card, the previous 16GB was running in the phone for at least 6 months.

Many Thanks.

I did I was originally on AOSP when I switched to Jellybean this started happening but the first thing I did was go back to AOSP. And it make s no difference, it is fine with a 2GB card but keeps losing my now 2nd 16GB card.

You sure the battery cover is on correctly. If not check the SD Card holder.
Last resort is to go fully stock and see what happens.
If the above fails, its a hardware issue

Thanks - going back to fully stock was my next plan at the weekend. Is there any form of pre-rooted stock ROM I can use, will going back to stock HTC ruin my bootloader and S-OFF and such things ?

Have you tried formatting the SD with the phone and not the computer? Also look for the rooted stock rom for your phone is your best bet, its out there in pd98 zip form. Good luck

TheCorner approves..
That Thanks button ain't gonna push itself!

I tried going back to stock and it still does the same thing, I noticed the SD card slot and SIM slot are on a daughterboard so I will try replacing it and seeing if it is a hardware issue.
Thank you for all your help.

I had a mounting issue after going from the stock 8GB card to a new 32GB one, all it needed was formatting and job done.. If you can format it in the phone do it, if not, put it in a card reader on the PC, it should open find it.

Thanks for replying but as i originally posted, I have had a 16GB card since probably last xmas, after going to Jellybean it started vanishing and that card is now dead, will not format in anything, PC card reader, laptop or phone. I got a new one and the phone has started ejecting it again. I assume the phone killed the original and this is not a card fault.
I have formatted the new card in PC,phone and my tablet and the phone is still losing it, it's fine on a PC. I am going to replace the SD card socket daughter board on the phone and hope it isn't a fault any worse than that !
Fingers crossed.
Download 4ext Recovery Updater from www.4ext.net and flash 4ext Touch Recovery if you haven't already. Then back up your SD card data, boot into recovery, go to 'wipe | format' and format SD card. Then go to 'tools' and run 'check partition alignment' and 'file system check'.
I used to have this problem real bad a long time ago with both an old 8GB card and a new 16GB card. I messed around a bit with all this and fixed it. I've rarely had the problem since. It happens once in a while, and a reboot fixes it. Not frequent anymore though. Also, format SD card in recovery always. I remember that this problem became very frequent for me when I used to format my SD card in PC with different cluster sizes. Don't know for sure if that was the reason or whether it was coincidence, but I suggest you format in recovery. Unless you use TWRP recovery, which just runs an 'rm -rf' command to delete all folders in SD card and doesn't actually format it. 4ext Touch Recovery is the best recovery for the DHD.

Thanks I will definitely give that a go today before ordering any parts.
I tried all the stuff with formatting and partitions and it made no difference to the new 16GB card, strangely my old 8GB card seems to work fine, so really not sure what would cause this to happen, none the wiser but the 8GB card will do fine for now.
