Just some background, I'm a VERY basic ROM developer just cutting my teeth on this stuff. I'm looking at incorporating Smooth Sense into my ROM. Here's my current issue:
Using this zip;
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=7495843&postcount=26
I can flash my ROM without smooth sense, boot, reboot to recovery, flash the above zip, reboot, and it works fine.
However, if I just take the framework.res.apk from that zip, place it into my kitchen, and make a ROM, the ROM will not boot when flashed. It gets to the Droid intro sequence, goes to the HTC white screen, and that screen just flashes indefinitely.
So, any ideas on what I'm doing wrong? Ideally, I'm not looking for someone to actually do it for my. I'm genuinely looking to better myself so that I can in return contribute to this community. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.
Could be the way it is signed. Try flashing your ROM by turning off signature verification in recovery and see if that helps.
An alternative it to take the icons out of smooth sense and copy them into yours to replace yours.

Make a NANDROID backup before doing ANYTHING.
Here is a custom boot animation I made called Android HeartBeat. It features what we commonly see on a heart rate monitor, that line that goes straight, up, down, back up and down once again with the little beeping noises. I always was under the impression that Android boot animations always had to be some shine that went across the text, but then I came up with this idea. From the start, it was inspired by Barina who created the Dark Dream theme (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=549363). The boot animation created there had totally broken away from the norm and I found it very creative. So here is my first ever theme related contribution to the community.
In order to use these, you will first need to make sure that the ROM you currently use supports this kind of boot animation, as far as I know I've only used it on Cyanogen 4.0.4 with the Xinvert theme. What you will need to do is open up your update.zip for the complete theme you want to put this in, navigate to system>framework>framework-res.apk>assets>images and replace the two original boot images already there. After that, you will need to resign the update and reflash. No wipe needed. Note, resigning the update is a must, even if the update is successful without signing, your applications will be broken. I do not know why, but that is what will happen. In the case this happens, simply reflash the original update unmodified. Note that a wipe may be needed in the case that happens, however reflashing the original update and flashing a nandroid backup will also resolve the issue without wiping. If additional help is needed, or if you have ideas, feel free to post here or message me.
This boot animation was made from scratch using only Microsoft Paint and GIMP. The little green Android however was obtained from the internet along with the heart. It has taken me over 15 trials to get this right to perfect the image to work nicely. If you would like to use this in your theme, please give credit where credit is due, however I welcome all to give this animation a try.
This looks good. When I finally figure out how to resign updates using Linux, i will have to give it a try.
The images as posted are not the correct size for boot animation images. Maybe you can zip and attach the ones that are working for you?
Looks good, would love to see it in action.

No thank you! Now I see an alpha channel. Thanks, I'm going to flash it now.
EDIT: Looks really nice in action. I'm gonna keep it on the phone. Nice job.
Ahaha alright, let me know if you have any suggestions! I think I will be working on more colors soon
I've spent much of the morning searching to no avail. Hopefully someone can point me in the right direction.
I want to make a custom boot animation that is simply a toast box that says "Welcome Will......One moment please." Or something such.
I want it kinda like Myn's boot, except my words instead of "warm2.2" Is there a simply way to do this other than learning how to create custom boot screen animations?

As far as I know, cause I have done the same searching, the only way is to learn how to create a custom boot animation. Or you can ask one of the awesome devs here to make on for you like nugglyunlimited or stoney 666. They have done great work for me in the past on splash screen and helping with boot animations. Hope this helps
I thought it would be easy. On warm 2.2, the boot screen looks like a system generated "toast" box. In Warm there is no animations really. So perhaps there is a config file somewhere that has the words "warm2.2" (and whatever else the the message says).
No, you need to modify the bootanimation.zip file. It essentially just contains a bunch of PNGs that are shown in succession to create an "animation".
There is no bootanimation file on myn's. At least not in system/media...
I am actually on mikfroyo right, bit I looked inside Myn's Rom.zip and didn't see a boot animation file.
I know where they are at and how to change the .png....I just don't see it in Myn's Rom. That is why I was thinking a script that runs his message at boot "Warm2.2"
Hi everyone!
I managed to root my DHD last night, used the tool to get S-OFF and ENG-OFF thing, well, everything that I could. I changed my radio, and installed a custom rom, everything went well. Then, I decided I'd want a new theme..... And then everything goes... yeah..
I installed Android Revolution and chose CommonSense as my new theme.
Well, I as I read that you need to use CWM Recovery and install the theme as a .zip from there, so I did. Put the .zip in my sd root and installed the theme from there. But it seems that was not the way to do it.
And as I read the instructions, that was definitely not the way to do it.
So, now my phone boots, HTC with big letters comes up, and then it changes to HTC Quietly Brilliant with a twitch. After being on Quietly Brilliant, it goes to black for 400 ms, and changes back to Quietly Brilliant and starts to loop that.
I tested that I can still do fastboot, and go to CWM Recovery from there..
But, I firstly decided to come up on here to ask what should I do now?
You can reflash the rom or find a working theme and install so that the boot loop will be gone.
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
its only a bootloop chillout there are 3 options, 1. find the version of that thme for your rom and flash it again. 2. flash your rom again. 3. push your framework-res.apk to/system/framework/ using adb
Yeah, I think it's being fixed right now.
I tried installing theme again.. THE RIGHT WAY and the RIGHT THEME. But, that didn't help, so now I'm flashing the rom again.
It's a great relief that it was just a "bootloop chillout"
Thanks for your help Lopio & AndroHero!

if your going to mod your device expect many bootloops best idea is before you flash anything, do a nandroid backup in recovery, it only takes a minute and if anything goes wrong you dont have to mess about flashing a new rom, you can just restore your old one
next time, backup before you flash from the CWM.
if u have a boot loop, you just need to re-flash the rom.
i am new to this site and i am wondering a few things, i really like the whole just droid boot animation and stuff but i don't know how to add that, i know how to add roms and stuff i have them on right now idr which one since i keep changing looking for a one with a cool boot animation and lock screen i was so sick of the evo's slide down i rooted my phone..

You didn't have to root to change the lockscreen. You can fully customize it with Widgetlocker. It's a few bucks, but more than worth it. Look it up & check out the WL themes thread as well, there's some great stuff there.
I wouldn't base my rom on the bootanimation & lockscreen, as both can easily be changed. To change the bootanimation, you either need a flashable zip specific for your rom, knowledge of adb, or Root Explorer or another root-level file explorer. Find the boot animation you want to use and download it. If it isn't a flashable zip, you'll need to know where your rom stores the boot animation. On Sense based roms, the boot animation is stored in system/customize/resource. With Root Explorer (or an alternative) change the name of the original boot animation, and move the one you want to that folder, ensuring it's named bootanimation.zip then set permissions.
There are threads with lists of boot animations available to download, or apps that allow you to browse/install from their list.
If you're having trouble flashing through recovery, I suggest switching to Amon Ra. Whatever you tried to flash was probably amend scripted. Once you've switched recoveries, remember to do a backup!
I also suggest learning more about being rooted before making any significant changes. Know what & why you're doing something before you do it. Good luck & have fun
I have an S3 with a rooted stock ROM and I started toying with changing the standard boot animation. I used the process http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1897969 with success. I downloaded several animations with ROM Toolbox and everything worked fine. I then modified one and it worked as well. I modified another but did not keep an eye on the final size of the zip file and I noticed later it was much too large. It locked my phone up at the start of the animation sequence and I had to flash the disable zip file. After flashing the enable zip file I noticed that it would not accept any modified or custom bootanimation files including the one that had previously worked. Stock ones downloaded through ROM Toolbox still work. I have gone over the files thoroughly but don't see any problems. I have tried something as simple as extracting and repacking a stock animation to a NANDROID restore with no success. I have also placed it manually in the /data/local folder instead of the app with no success either. Does anyone have a clue what may be going on?
Did you try Flashing the Enable zip file again ?
Yes. I did that after flashing the disable zip, rebooting and removing the bootanimation file. Since it locked up the only animation that works are downloaded stock ones from ROM Toolbox. It would even lock up on a stock one that I rezipped with no alterations. I have used both Winzip and 7 zip.
Are you using the right compression level? It has to be set to "store", anything else will cause it to not show/work.
Weeeeeell. I feel like an idiot. I read right over that part of the instructions. Cue rolling of the eyes. It makes sense though as it needs to be kept simple for the boot process. I tested some with both zip programs and they work. Odd the first one worked though. Thank you for pointing this out.

No problem, if it's any higher (like you said) the OS would have to spend a lot of CPU power reading it, and thats just not practical to do at boot nonetheless
Just a little further of an explanation since you were already hinting at it
Anyway, glad you got it solved, have fun playing with boot anims, it's very enjoyable
