I have an S3 with a rooted stock ROM and I started toying with changing the standard boot animation. I used the process http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1897969 with success. I downloaded several animations with ROM Toolbox and everything worked fine. I then modified one and it worked as well. I modified another but did not keep an eye on the final size of the zip file and I noticed later it was much too large. It locked my phone up at the start of the animation sequence and I had to flash the disable zip file. After flashing the enable zip file I noticed that it would not accept any modified or custom bootanimation files including the one that had previously worked. Stock ones downloaded through ROM Toolbox still work. I have gone over the files thoroughly but don't see any problems. I have tried something as simple as extracting and repacking a stock animation to a NANDROID restore with no success. I have also placed it manually in the /data/local folder instead of the app with no success either. Does anyone have a clue what may be going on?
Did you try Flashing the Enable zip file again ?
Yes. I did that after flashing the disable zip, rebooting and removing the bootanimation file. Since it locked up the only animation that works are downloaded stock ones from ROM Toolbox. It would even lock up on a stock one that I rezipped with no alterations. I have used both Winzip and 7 zip.
Are you using the right compression level? It has to be set to "store", anything else will cause it to not show/work.
Weeeeeell. I feel like an idiot. I read right over that part of the instructions. Cue rolling of the eyes. It makes sense though as it needs to be kept simple for the boot process. I tested some with both zip programs and they work. Odd the first one worked though. Thank you for pointing this out.

No problem, if it's any higher (like you said) the OS would have to spend a lot of CPU power reading it, and thats just not practical to do at boot nonetheless
Just a little further of an explanation since you were already hinting at it
Anyway, glad you got it solved, have fun playing with boot anims, it's very enjoyable

You didn't have to root to change the lockscreen. You can fully customize it with Widgetlocker. It's a few bucks, but more than worth it. Look it up & check out the WL themes thread as well, there's some great stuff there.
I wouldn't base my rom on the bootanimation & lockscreen, as both can easily be changed. To change the bootanimation, you either need a flashable zip specific for your rom, knowledge of adb, or Root Explorer or another root-level file explorer. Find the boot animation you want to use and download it. If it isn't a flashable zip, you'll need to know where your rom stores the boot animation. On Sense based roms, the boot animation is stored in system/customize/resource. With Root Explorer (or an alternative) change the name of the original boot animation, and move the one you want to that folder, ensuring it's named bootanimation.zip then set permissions.
There are threads with lists of boot animations available to download, or apps that allow you to browse/install from their list.
If you're having trouble flashing through recovery, I suggest switching to Amon Ra. Whatever you tried to flash was probably amend scripted. Once you've switched recoveries, remember to do a backup!
I also suggest learning more about being rooted before making any significant changes. Know what & why you're doing something before you do it. Good luck & have fun
Help! I can't boot into any thing! I don't know what exactly caused the issue, but this is every hack-related I've done since last reboot:
- Reflashed Stock ROM
- Disabled USB debugging
- Installed zeppelion's script on boot for stock rom thingy (for supercharging in stock). Got LOTS of errors.
- Changed font to Roboto with Font Changer'. When I rebooted, it stuck. I removed the battery and put it in again.
What can I do?
I had this sort problem when I tried installing SE.Tweaked.
When you reflashed the stock rom, could you boot in?
Go here: http://www.xperiagamer.com/Stock-Roms/234-stock-firmware-for-root.html
Flash the correct file, AND ONLY THAT FILE. Then try to boot in. If it works, restore your backup...you did make one right?

Well... thank you pretty much for the ultra fast response!
There are a few things that I'd like to point out:
After removing and reputting (lol) the battery for at least, like, 20 times, and leaving the battery plugged in for at least 15 mins, I have finally managed to get it booting into flash and fastboot mode so now I can do lots of stuff. Secondly, I usually make backups for almost everything, but by doing so I ended having about 20mb free in sdcard at the time of the issue. Answer to your question: After reflashing stock rom and installing DoomKernel stuff I could boot into anything I liked. Third, I flashed exactly that rom but from the links from the forums, so I may ask if it is really needed to download again?
Ok, now I have cleared that out, what can I do next? Re-reflash rom (lulz) or simply flash the kernel again?
Waiting for helpful responses...
As long as it's the same rom it's ok.
I've never even heard of this Zepplin's script. So I cant say much to it.
Can try it again, if you get the same problem, might wanna contact the dev.
Or Doomkernel might not work with Zepplin.
sorry I cant be mroe help.

I finally reflashed and its working again! Yay.
The Zeppelin's AutoStart Script at Boot (thread here) is just a script that enables scripts like Supercharger to start on phone boot. But now I'm sure as hell it is not compatible!
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I found Zepplin's script and am using it now as well.
But, doesn't it explicitly say NOT to use his script at boot?
I have decided to change bootanimation and downanimation on my HOX after rooting and flashing with ARHD 5.1.0. I have found black version of stock animation and by using root explorer replaced both zips. Very simple. Bootanimation worked fine but downanimation did not work at all... blank screen. tried replace the file again but did not help. I have opened the zip and renamed all files so it looked just as in original animation, but still nothing. I gave up and copied original file back and WTH ?? screen still blank on shutting down no animation or whatsoever.
I was forced to flash whole ROM again which helped thankfully.
After a while I thought to myself that there must be a reason or a way to do it properly.... Maybe there was a bug or something and if Ill try again on fresh ROM it will work. But NO!! it did not, bootanimation changed ok but downanimation after replacing the file was disappearing and I could not reverse it.
Then I came up with an idea that maybe I could replace the files in a flashable zip file of a ROM... I am not a developer and I have not been sure it that will destroy the integrity of a file and could lead to a brick. But I decided to give it a go, replaced the files in the ROM file and flashed it again.
After rebooting bootanimation was as I wanted it and downanimation worked as well... whoop whoop... but when I wanted to install some MODs I fallen into bootloop... thankfully I get out of it and now its all working as I wanted.
So summarizing:
If somehow you find impossible to change downanimation try to replace it in the ROM's zip and flash it.
But do it at your own risk .... :]

Did you try Checking the Default.xml file to see if it points to your Downanimation?
I did not but animation worked before replacing the file, then it stopped working after replacing and it did not work after copying back original file ... so it would not be that ....

The trick I use to do is to put the boot animation or down animation in the ROM before flashing it to the device. Worked like a treat.
I have just started using the kitchen manly for the purpose to de-odex stock rom and use. But since starting there's a bunch of stuff would really like to mod. The big one for now is getting the rom to allow boot image modification. I have tried changing bootanimation folder but will not work.
Have since found under option 8 - show working order of your rom, the custom boot animation allowed is set to "no". And I have tried most things to get to yes but with no joy.
Any advice to what settings I should be trying to achieve throughout the kitchen would be much appreciated. Thx in advance......:good:
Basically what the title says. I was changing boot animations and when I went to undo my changes, something went askew and so now the sprint boot animation wont work. I had to rename the regular one to make android think it was the sprint one just so I could power off. Also, all of the sound files don't work. So yeah. I need an unmodified copy of /system/media/. Ive tried getting it from a stock rom but that went nowhere fast.
Honestly I can not thank you enough. I especially appreciate that you used Dropbox specifically. My phone wasn't mounting to my computer for whatever reason and I had my Dropbox signed in in ES Explorer. Again, thank you.
