Disk Drive Access - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I recently upgraded to a GB ROM. Now I can't figure out how to access the disk drive option. Need help. And yes I'm a noob.

If you connect to a pc, it should show up in your notification tool bar.

I am connected and the notification bar gives me the following option. Select to diable USB debugging....however I can't seem to get from here to disk drive option.

Try rebooting your phone, and if not, reflash the rom, and you should be all set.

There's an app in the market called "auto mount SD" or something similar. When you open the app you can choose to automatically mount as disk drive when connected to your computer. This was the only way I could get mine to mount at one time.
Widgetsoid 2.x also has a toggle for "mount usb". Occasionally I still don't get the option & hitting the toggle does the trick for me.

Thanks for the help. I ended up reflashing and that fixed the problem, however now I'm having problems with the phone hesitating to wake up.

If you've recently re-flashed, it make take a few times, as it still settling in. If you flashed a kernel to it, the kernel could be the cause.

Ah, the app you're talking about it dual mount sd. It also comes in handy cuz if you're listening to music, or have a lot of apps on your sdcard, they won't get disabled if you use it.

I did flash a kernel as well. Will that settle in or do I need to find a new kernel?

Well a kernel takes about 2~3 days to settle in, so you can make your final call then, but its its an sbc kernel, one of the side effects is that it can make your phoen laggy, cuz as the slight delay upon waking. Changing the kernel can fix that.

Thanks for the info...I'll give it another day or so. I'm not to keen on the lag on wake=-up so I'll be shopping for a new kernel if it keeps up.

No problem, and on CM7, I have no issues with the non-sbc version of the Tiamat kernel.

USB Mounting issue - Really different...

So I have a new one for everyone. Ever since I last reloaded the firmware on my Evo, its been automatically mounting as a usb drive when I plug it into my computer. I think I told it to do that by default, but I successfully changed it, but even though it says charge only, but still mounts to the computer. Its rooted, but stock on the latest OTA with full NAND unlock. If anyone happens to know a way to fix this, I sure would be grateful, its annoying. Its easy enough to fix, just toggle between charge only and mount usb, hit ok, and then the sd card is loaded to the phone, but its kind of annoying to do every time I plug it in to my computer. (I usually charge off my computer, to keep it close by.) Thanks in advance!
Do you have DoubleTwist installed? By default (the moment you install it) it causes this issue unless you go into the app and turn it off under options.

Cannot mount phone as disk drive

Hey I have looked everywhere for a fix to this problem.
I rooted my desire a few weekends ago, with it now running Neophyte Froyo 2.2 ROM perfectly.
I connected the phone to PC afterwards and transferred some apps onto the sd card (as a disk drive) including a few songs as well.
Since yesterday however, whenever i plug my phone into PC, I am no longer able to access the SD card as a disk drive. The computer recognises the usb, however the phone no longer brings up the menu which asks what i want to eg. charge only, sync, disk drive etc. There is also no drop down menu from the top of the phone for me to change this. Going and manually changing the setting in the desire to "automatically mount as disk drive" has also not helped.
I thought my phone was USB bricked and went on to performing the fix for this. However, despite going through both the methods posted here as well as modaco (changing the CID), the problem persists.
I have accessed the phone using adb, and after typing adb devices, it registers the phone as connected with a serial number, so i dont think USB bricking is an issue here.
I can see a disk drive in computer whenever i plug the phone in, but if i double click on it, it states "Please insert disk drive into F". I have uninstalled the htc sync and drivers numerous times without improvement. I have also restarted my PC and my phone numerous times without improvement.
My phone still reads my SD card no problem. My SD card is also able to be accessed by my PC by taking it out of the phone and using a card reader.
Any help would be greatly appreciated
I have the same problem on my samsung vibrant phone.
Exactly the same problem here
my SD card is definitely fine, adb commands work.
neither double twist nor HTC sync recognise any phone connected. my computer sees it, but can't access it (same error message)
would love to sort this out too!
ROM: LeeDrOiD v2.3d
Radio: 32.54.00.32U_5.14.05.17
EDIT: found out it was my own fault. i use autostarts, and stopped 'PC synchronization' from automatically booting after startup. thought it would automatically start when connected to PC, but clearly not. once i undid this it connects to PC fine again, get the dropdown menu!
Sorry, how did you fix this - i am having this too...

He stopped the PC synchronization. Maybe you can stop it in the menu (Settings - Accounts & sync -> disable Background data and Auto-sync). I don't know if that works, but you can try it.
If you have got a Task Manager or something like that you could look for the task and kill it.
I'm not sure, but it should help.
Please post the result of your try.
Tried - no help. Couldn't find anything like "PC synchronisation"??
I ended up taking the battery out, jiggling the SD card and trying again - that seemed to fix it ?! weird...
great

CDROM.ISO removal problem - Mounts SD-Card (nvm, found fix)

I noticed this problem after removing that annoying CDROM.ISO file from /system/etc/. A pop up appears after you plug in your phone to a PC. It automatically mounts this as a CD Drive and tries to get you to install something to your PC, f***ing verizon and their stupid bloat.
Anyways if you remove /system/etc/CDROM.ISO then it will just mount your SD-CARD instead. Does anyone know a fix to this?
Found a fix for it after digging around the forums some more.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=7958284&postcount=7
Thanks INTREPID-NY
Code:
This has been reported to work as well:
Dial ##7764726
Hit Call
Type Password 000000 (that's 6 zeros)
Hit Feature Settings
Choose CD ROM
Click Disable
Hit menu, commit modifications (it will say no item changed)
Also the CDROM.iso file seems like it still needs to be there, like if you delete it then it will still mount the SD-Card. So don't remove the file and do what is quoted above.
Wish I had read this before I had to wipe my card and rewrite everything I work for vzw and hate all the extra crap
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
I was wondering about that cd-drive, though I never got any prompts. Worked perfectly, sweet. Thanks.
Weird I did this and now my SD Card still mounts by itself... Anything else that can cause this? I am using just a stock deodexed rom of the last OTA. When I choose charge only, it will mount the SD-Card on my PC.
I have this same problem.
stock 2.2 ota, 1 click root, and the ##764 thing to stop the annoying pop up... for a few months everything worked great, no pop up, no mounting, it was sweet, just charging.
now all of a sudden it mounts my sd only all the time so i cannot
1. charge my phone usb to my work computer while listening to music on sd card
2. charge my phoen in the car while listening to music on sd card
so pretty much just lost music listening capabilities.
wtf
When I attempt to call that string of digits my phone stops responding until I hit the back button or the home key. I get no further.
Has anyone else run into this problem?
Thanks for the fix, worked great for me!

[Q] DInc external SD Card storage not accessible...any ideas?

Ok I am stumped...my wife just got the Droid Inc. a couple weeks ago and I pretty much immediately did the following:
Root it
Install SetCPU, used "Perflock Disabler" & setup profiles
Install "Autostarts" to disable some uneeded serivces & widgets at boot
...it wasn't until recently that I attempted to plug her phone into our computer (Win7 x64) so I could start to sync some pics, etc. to it. Unfortunately, whenever I plug it into the computer I get the "Do you want to install the VZW Drivers?" which seems to work. I see (2) additional removable drives show up however I just get the "Please insert a disk..." message.
Is there something I am not doing right? or is her phone borked?
I'm used to just plugging my DX into the computer and the SD card mounting itself without any problems.
I'm trying to get the OTA installed on her phone and keep root using the steps listed here (http://solo.dc3.com/dinc/) which I've seen posted on numerous Android forums sites.
Ideas? Help?
/bump
Anyone?
Try going into "computer" in the start menu on your computer and see if it lists the removable storage. If you still can't access them then you'll probably have to do a slow format on them. If that don't work then I would try plugging it into a different computer and if that don't work then I would re-flash the phone with the Verizon RUU from your computer. That's all I can come up with. If anybody else has any suggestions that would be cool.
You could also try pulling the card out and using an adapter to put it in your computer and see if it's the card itself. That's all I got.

I mentioned above that (2) removable drives show up when the phone is plugged in
I haven't tried plugging it into a physically different computer but I also did reboot over to Ubuntu 10.10 and I see 2 storage devices mount (labelled as "HTC Android Storage Device"...or something along those lines.) Unfortunately double-clicking them and right-click-> Open doesn't do produce any results either.
I'll give it a shot on our laptop (running XP) to see if that produces anything...but I'm doubtful.
I'm trying to avoid a RUU restore because I'm know she'll get annoyed...and I'm trying to avoid the wife's wrath & eye rolling
I'm fairly sure that the card is being read by the phone but then again I could be wrong...not sure if HTC Android phones save photos to the internal memory or not.
P.S. - In case some starts thinking overwise...I'm no computer n00b.
Plug it in, go to device manager, find the 2 things listed for the phone under disc drives. Right click them both and select update driver software. Then on the popup window select to search automatically.
That should work.

Funny...I almost did that yesterday but I was instead pointing the driver update to the HTC sync folder instead which wasn't working. Btw are you referring to letting it scan the computer for the drivers or doing a search online?

...and that didn't work either. All I get is a message saying that the best driver (Disk Drive) is already installed
I had the Android SDK installed as well (back when I rooted my DX) and made sure there were no remnants from Motorola or HTC...but no luck.
I'm stumped!
I'm going to try pulling out the SD card to see if that works...
Ok...so plugged the phone into our WinXP-based laptop with no previous drivers installed, (2) removable drives showed up but was unable to access the drives.
Attempted to update the "HTC Android Phone USB Device" entries in the Device Manager by having it look online...no dice.
The SD card appears to be ok though because I can read it just fine by pulling out the card, using an SD card adapter & popping it into the laptop...I can see all the cards contents without problem. I know that the phone sees the card properly too (obviously) b/c I can also access the SD card via Astro.
I'm not using the same USB cable every time either so I'm sure that isn't the issue either. I've used both my DX USB cable and the USB cable that came with the DInc.
Anyone else have any ideas?
This seems blatantly obvious, but I'm just gonna throw it out there because I haven't heard it mentioned. But by all the symptoms, it seems like the phone is mounted as charge only, not as a disk drive. Does it say it's mounted as a disk drive in the notification pulldown on the phone?
Come on now...give me some credit Of course I've checked that...I do have a rooted & custom ROM on my DX afterall.
I've also tried setting it to USB Debugging mode as well...no dice
Haha yeah I figured you checked it, but who knows. Brain farts are a common occurence these days. The symptoms just matched so well!
Anyways...I read this somewhere: Hit the Mobile Broadband Connect option and see if does anything. Also, another blatant one, restart both the phone and the computer. Also, make sure it's set to ask everytime you connect, and default to disk drive.
That's all I got tho...good luck sir.

I know figured people would think it would be as simple as that...but if it was that simple of a fix I would've figured it out by now
I tried the Mobile Broadband option and that doesn't do anything...no pop up or prompts. I've tried restarting both the PC and the phone almost every time and no luck and the phone was set to "disk drive" as well for most of my attempts. I've also had it on "ask" for some of the attempts as well.
I also noticed that when I plug in the phone sometimes and it prompts to install some software that it doesn't appear to do anything. All I get after the install is done (at least I think it's done) is show me a Windows Installer window with different commands for quiet installs, debug installs, etc. and then just an "ok" button.
Have you tried installing the newest HTC Sync to see it it would install or update the drivers? I've never been faced with a problem like this so I'm just trying to cover all bases.

Yup I've tried that too with v2.0 & the latest version (v3.0) and in both instances it shows "disconnected" even after a reboot of both the phone and the computer.
Here's one more thing, not sure if you've already checked into this...but is there any VCast crap installed on her phone? I just read on another forum that someone removed the VCast Media Manager with a similar prob and it fixed it. (you probably already read the same forum lol)

Hmm hadn't read that to be honest but just off hand I don't think it has the VCast software on the phone. I'll check tonight when she gets home.
Well I guess if none of this works then looks like you're gonna have to deal with the dreaded eye roll while running the RUU. Ha ha sorry we couldn't get ya going.

[Q] Missing Contacts and applications on reboot

I have currently Fat Free Froyo with the only 2.6.32 kernel, I was able to make working with my Kaiser, KAIS130 with DATA on SD Card Partition and SYS on NAND
I configured contacts, added a music player application. Did some settings with ADW Launcher. Then activated wifi, tested it working, openned browser and KABOOOM, phone forces ever application as NOT RESPONDING. So, I just long pressed power button to turn it off and then turn on again. All of the stuff I configured is gone, except the Widgets I manually added on the homescreen.
So my question, in the endo is, How can I get my settings saved and not to lose contacts / installed apps?
My SD Card setup:
870MB Fat32 (for Android install, a number of music files and android apk installers)
520MB ext2
510MB ext2 (no idea on what partition its saving DATA)
Most of the time it goes on the last partition of the SD Card, now if you configured data using atools, then p2 would be partition 2 of the card, and p3 is partition 3.
Never heard of data corruption occuring on the SD Card.
Have you tried restoring your phone back to stock OS (WinMo 6.1)?
If not, try flashing the stock ROM back onto the phone so it flashes the stock radio as well back onto the phone. As long as you don't include KAISDIAG.NBH, the bootloader won't be reflashed even though the flashing process states it's being flashed.
Then reflash the kernel you're using, then reinstall your build.
Also you're stating you can only get one type of 2.6.32 kernel working? Have you tried the latest kernel under the Kernel help thread?
Make sure you use atools to configure the kernel for your kaiser.

Just recently installed my apps again without any re-formatting. Installed the widgets again. Rebooted. Now its showing everything fine.
Mine kernel is 2.6.32, Panel Type 1, Keyboard type: tytn II, 240x320 (This one is my first attempt in making an nbh and wifi works on it).
This release (Fat free Froyo) is hell slow while opening applications etc. What can be the problem? The previously used Eclair Polymod 2.1D wasnt this much of a turtle.
P.S: When I connected USD, disable debugging mode and enable USB Storage, the button "Turn off USB storage" turns back to "Turn on USB Storage" after 5 seconds. I can't connect my SD Card as USB Storage :/

I have that same problem with USB Storage, I found that if I leave Debugging enabled in certain cases, I can enable USB Storage just fine. In Windows, no matter what you do, it won't connect, and in Linux it's still pretty buggy.
You've made your own kernel, sweet! Still trying to get mine to compile, but overall really haven't had time with the holidays, but will start up again this week.
Fat Free Froyo is a pretty decent build, but yes some apps do take awhile to load. I found that Gingerbones build is very stable, at least with my testing. You should give it a try, though it is pretty stripped down, so you might want to grab whatever apps you want and throw them in /system.

Right now on Gingerbones:
Radio version 1.70.19 (I'm sure about that)
Wifi Turn ON = ERROR
Installing Polymod 2.1D and checking if it works with 2.6.32 (though the kernel's tagged as Froyo's)
ALOT OF TEXT ROLLS REGARDING SOME SCHEDULE thingi, idk but hope that everything goes ok
Re-Partitioned SD Card and now Data is on 800Megs and FAT32 is on 900Megs
I loved polymod 2.1D but it had wifi error with 2.6.25
Edit: 2.1D says "Unable to Start wifi"
Back to the one and only Fat free Froyo
Edit3:Again settings are not saved :/ Battery is stuck at 15% (even I kept it connected for more than an hour)
Back to Windows mobile for charging fuss
