[Q] DInc external SD Card storage not accessible...any ideas? - Droid Incredible Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok I am stumped...my wife just got the Droid Inc. a couple weeks ago and I pretty much immediately did the following:
Root it
Install SetCPU, used "Perflock Disabler" & setup profiles
Install "Autostarts" to disable some uneeded serivces & widgets at boot
...it wasn't until recently that I attempted to plug her phone into our computer (Win7 x64) so I could start to sync some pics, etc. to it. Unfortunately, whenever I plug it into the computer I get the "Do you want to install the VZW Drivers?" which seems to work. I see (2) additional removable drives show up however I just get the "Please insert a disk..." message.
Is there something I am not doing right? or is her phone borked?
I'm used to just plugging my DX into the computer and the SD card mounting itself without any problems.
I'm trying to get the OTA installed on her phone and keep root using the steps listed here (http://solo.dc3.com/dinc/) which I've seen posted on numerous Android forums sites.
Ideas? Help?

/bump
Anyone?

Try going into "computer" in the start menu on your computer and see if it lists the removable storage. If you still can't access them then you'll probably have to do a slow format on them. If that don't work then I would try plugging it into a different computer and if that don't work then I would re-flash the phone with the Verizon RUU from your computer. That's all I can come up with. If anybody else has any suggestions that would be cool.
You could also try pulling the card out and using an adapter to put it in your computer and see if it's the card itself. That's all I got.

I mentioned above that (2) removable drives show up when the phone is plugged in
I haven't tried plugging it into a physically different computer but I also did reboot over to Ubuntu 10.10 and I see 2 storage devices mount (labelled as "HTC Android Storage Device"...or something along those lines.) Unfortunately double-clicking them and right-click-> Open doesn't do produce any results either.
I'll give it a shot on our laptop (running XP) to see if that produces anything...but I'm doubtful.
I'm trying to avoid a RUU restore because I'm know she'll get annoyed...and I'm trying to avoid the wife's wrath & eye rolling
I'm fairly sure that the card is being read by the phone but then again I could be wrong...not sure if HTC Android phones save photos to the internal memory or not.
P.S. - In case some starts thinking overwise...I'm no computer n00b.

Plug it in, go to device manager, find the 2 things listed for the phone under disc drives. Right click them both and select update driver software. Then on the popup window select to search automatically.
That should work.

Funny...I almost did that yesterday but I was instead pointing the driver update to the HTC sync folder instead which wasn't working. Btw are you referring to letting it scan the computer for the drivers or doing a search online?

...and that didn't work either. All I get is a message saying that the best driver (Disk Drive) is already installed
I had the Android SDK installed as well (back when I rooted my DX) and made sure there were no remnants from Motorola or HTC...but no luck.
I'm stumped!
I'm going to try pulling out the SD card to see if that works...

Ok...so plugged the phone into our WinXP-based laptop with no previous drivers installed, (2) removable drives showed up but was unable to access the drives.
Attempted to update the "HTC Android Phone USB Device" entries in the Device Manager by having it look online...no dice.
The SD card appears to be ok though because I can read it just fine by pulling out the card, using an SD card adapter & popping it into the laptop...I can see all the cards contents without problem. I know that the phone sees the card properly too (obviously) b/c I can also access the SD card via Astro.
I'm not using the same USB cable every time either so I'm sure that isn't the issue either. I've used both my DX USB cable and the USB cable that came with the DInc.
Anyone else have any ideas?

This seems blatantly obvious, but I'm just gonna throw it out there because I haven't heard it mentioned. But by all the symptoms, it seems like the phone is mounted as charge only, not as a disk drive. Does it say it's mounted as a disk drive in the notification pulldown on the phone?

Come on now...give me some credit Of course I've checked that...I do have a rooted & custom ROM on my DX afterall.
I've also tried setting it to USB Debugging mode as well...no dice

Haha yeah I figured you checked it, but who knows. Brain farts are a common occurence these days. The symptoms just matched so well!
Anyways...I read this somewhere: Hit the Mobile Broadband Connect option and see if does anything. Also, another blatant one, restart both the phone and the computer. Also, make sure it's set to ask everytime you connect, and default to disk drive.
That's all I got tho...good luck sir.

I know figured people would think it would be as simple as that...but if it was that simple of a fix I would've figured it out by now
I tried the Mobile Broadband option and that doesn't do anything...no pop up or prompts. I've tried restarting both the PC and the phone almost every time and no luck and the phone was set to "disk drive" as well for most of my attempts. I've also had it on "ask" for some of the attempts as well.
I also noticed that when I plug in the phone sometimes and it prompts to install some software that it doesn't appear to do anything. All I get after the install is done (at least I think it's done) is show me a Windows Installer window with different commands for quiet installs, debug installs, etc. and then just an "ok" button.

Have you tried installing the newest HTC Sync to see it it would install or update the drivers? I've never been faced with a problem like this so I'm just trying to cover all bases.

Yup I've tried that too with v2.0 & the latest version (v3.0) and in both instances it shows "disconnected" even after a reboot of both the phone and the computer.

Here's one more thing, not sure if you've already checked into this...but is there any VCast crap installed on her phone? I just read on another forum that someone removed the VCast Media Manager with a similar prob and it fixed it. (you probably already read the same forum lol)

Hmm hadn't read that to be honest but just off hand I don't think it has the VCast software on the phone. I'll check tonight when she gets home.

Well I guess if none of this works then looks like you're gonna have to deal with the dreaded eye roll while running the RUU. Ha ha sorry we couldn't get ya going.

[Question] Are there two disk drives or something?

**Disclaimer so that this doesn't get deleted. I looked at all the posts and tried to search, couldn't find any answers and I made this thread HERE because I doubt anyone in "General" would know what I'm talking about. This is more of a development question.**
----------
Ok, I am actually having two problems.
1) Normally when I plug my phone in the computer and choose "disk drive" mode, a screen pops up on my PC titled "Removable Disk (J)" That's actually not the right one because right behind that screen I get another pop-up titled "Removable Disk (K)" and that's actually the one with the folders and everything that I'm supposed to use (the root of the sd card folder.) So I hit cancel on (J) and am on my way using (K).
Well over the weekend, on Friday, I rooted my phone using toast's way and then I went camping without doing ANYTHING else.
Then I come back last night, everything is working fine and I installed ROM Manager on there because I wanted to flash Pete's "BuglessBeast". Since my internet connection in my basement is super slow I decided to just leave it at that and work on it at work today. Well here I am.
Problem: Phone was not connecting to computer. It kept giving me errors and then asked me to Format my card. After about half hour of trying to get it to connect I said "fine.. I'll just format it and factory reset my phone and root all over again and do all this. Well now.. phone is only connecting to (J) drive. (K) never appears.
2) Also, after rooting and finding out that ROM Manager won't work for me I have to manually download the file, I tried to go into recovery mode and every time I selected "sd card: apply update.zip", I keep getting the same error saying "FILE NOT FOUND ON SD CARD".
Any help please?
Am I doing something wrong?
Is there a way to start over, all over again?
With the problem running (where you can see both disks), right click on "My Computer" and select "manage", then go to "Disk Management" and see if your SD card is partitioned or something. That's very unusual and should only present itself if your SD card is partitioned and it's seeing both partitions.

development is not for posting questions, q and a is for posting questions (hence the name)
you probably built an ext container before (partitioned the card, using one of the recoveries). if you partition the card, they will come up as two disks when you plug the usb in. when you 'repaired' it, it formatted the whole thing into one block. by formatting, you've erased anything you had on it. you'll have to put the files you want back on the card.

ive seen quite a few windows users on here name their file update.zip but have hidden file extensions turned on so in reality the name is update.zip.zip which will not work.
if thats not the issue, something sounds very wrong with your microsd card.
not sure why you had two partitions, J and K, but seems to hint at app2sd or had two partitions setup on the microsd card ...
my friend had one go bad on him yesterday, i had never seen it before but perhaps there is something defective.
otherwise, a reformat of the card, should bring it back to new.

Cannot mount phone as disk drive

Hey I have looked everywhere for a fix to this problem.
I rooted my desire a few weekends ago, with it now running Neophyte Froyo 2.2 ROM perfectly.
I connected the phone to PC afterwards and transferred some apps onto the sd card (as a disk drive) including a few songs as well.
Since yesterday however, whenever i plug my phone into PC, I am no longer able to access the SD card as a disk drive. The computer recognises the usb, however the phone no longer brings up the menu which asks what i want to eg. charge only, sync, disk drive etc. There is also no drop down menu from the top of the phone for me to change this. Going and manually changing the setting in the desire to "automatically mount as disk drive" has also not helped.
I thought my phone was USB bricked and went on to performing the fix for this. However, despite going through both the methods posted here as well as modaco (changing the CID), the problem persists.
I have accessed the phone using adb, and after typing adb devices, it registers the phone as connected with a serial number, so i dont think USB bricking is an issue here.
I can see a disk drive in computer whenever i plug the phone in, but if i double click on it, it states "Please insert disk drive into F". I have uninstalled the htc sync and drivers numerous times without improvement. I have also restarted my PC and my phone numerous times without improvement.
My phone still reads my SD card no problem. My SD card is also able to be accessed by my PC by taking it out of the phone and using a card reader.
Any help would be greatly appreciated
I have the same problem on my samsung vibrant phone.
Exactly the same problem here
my SD card is definitely fine, adb commands work.
neither double twist nor HTC sync recognise any phone connected. my computer sees it, but can't access it (same error message)
would love to sort this out too!
ROM: LeeDrOiD v2.3d
Radio: 32.54.00.32U_5.14.05.17
EDIT: found out it was my own fault. i use autostarts, and stopped 'PC synchronization' from automatically booting after startup. thought it would automatically start when connected to PC, but clearly not. once i undid this it connects to PC fine again, get the dropdown menu!

He stopped the PC synchronization. Maybe you can stop it in the menu (Settings - Accounts & sync -> disable Background data and Auto-sync). I don't know if that works, but you can try it.
If you have got a Task Manager or something like that you could look for the task and kill it.
I'm not sure, but it should help.
Please post the result of your try.
Tried - no help. Couldn't find anything like "PC synchronisation"??
I ended up taking the battery out, jiggling the SD card and trying again - that seemed to fix it ?! weird...
great

[Q] USB connect to PC Suddenly Not Working. Any Help?

I've had no issues, and really no need, to USB connect for a while, until my partner wanted me to bulk upload a lot of pictures recently taken at a family event. So I plugged the USB into the phone and attached the PC, an option appeared on the phone to connect SD card and I chose media transfer, then nothing. No icon, no options on the PC to browse the SD card. I've checked the official help pages and done a few of the things they ask you to do - shut down the phone, battery pull, unmounted then mount SD, restore system settings - but none of that has worked. I have even un-installed and reinstalled PC Companion, as advised, so the PC could re download the drivers but still nothing. I'm all out of idea so hopefully some of the helpful users on her could offer some advice.
Thanks.

Regards Dousan...
I found that to search the sd card its hest to use 'connect phone sd card mode' because mtp doesnt like sd cards with a lot on for some reason. So to connect it in mtp mode I've given up on answers anf just accept that to connect it I have to unmount my sd card and then it works perfectly. I havn't tried re-mounting the sd card after a successful connect though to be fair so you could try that?
Sent from my R800i using XDA App
Thanks to both of you. Tried unmounting and then connecting but it fails to install a driver, which is exactly the problem someone in the thread Dousan linked to. An MTP app? or some such. I'm not so techno savvy so im not sure if I would have deleted it in my haste for getting rid of things I don't use. Not sure if having that app would help.

Update for 4.0.4 power saving and USB problems

I've had this Sprint Galaxy S II phone for about two or three weeks, and it just updated to 4.0.4. The only problems I am having are these:
1. power saving is set to come on at 50%, but it doesn't. Lately, I have been home and have been able to charge it or happened to look at it when it was just below 50%. If I go into the settings and manually uncheck and check it again, it turns on power saving. Any way to fix this?
2. I've never messed with the SD card yet. The card is the same as my old phone's, so there's stuff on it I can't delete. Anyway, I think they changed the way this connected to PCs because the old image of Andru on the screen is gone. So, now when I connect it, my computer thinks it's a camera. If the icons are in tile view, it won't show you the folder or file names. And it won't let me paste music (only thing I'm trying to do) onto the SD card. Now, FYI, my fiance just reinstalled my OS (XP) because of some computer problems I was having, so maybe there's some XP update I need for this to connect to the PC. If I can connect the card to the computer without the phone, I'll try that, but I don't know how.
I'm not sure about the power saving mode, but I ran into the issue with the sd card. I fixed it by installing the Samsung drivers (which can be found by a quick Google search, or by searching these forums) and turned on mass storage mode. I'm running xp as well and it shows up under removable storage F: & G: in the my computer folder. Hope this helps

How do you turn on mass storage mode? The Sprint guy had me download the drivers, but the device wasn't recognized by the PC when I did. I then got SP 3 for Windows, but I haven't noticed any difference, so I am not sure if there's something else my computer is missing.
When you connect the phone a us icon shows in the status bar, swipe down and touch the notification then it will allow you to turn it on.

I called Sprint today because I was still having this issue with the SD card, and they told me that since I was using Windows XP, I would never be able to see the SD card because it was too old an OS. I can't find anything online I should download, so I thought I'd check here again to see if there was a way around this. I figured if anyone would know, it would be the people on this forum.
P.S. I am still having the power saving mode issue but forgot to ask them about that.

lolwat? XP may be old, but not old enough to still support USB mass.
ICS uses a new USB setup for connecting using MTP, and another older mode I don't remember the letters for offhand. XP should read MTP but not the other, but you typically need Samsung drivers for either. Market has an app, https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=in.zatta.USB_switch USB Switcher that will change the USB mode from MTP to mass, after rebooting your phone. Works on my E4GT, so presumably it might for yours. Hope that helps.
Edit: It is possible though for certain size cards to not be read by XP depending on certain settings or hardware, I dunno if that's what they meant by that, I assumed you meant connecting to the card via USB on the phone. If I got that wrong my apologies, hope this helps regardless.
I'm not sure how big my SD card is as the fiance gave it to me, and I don't recall. He is the computer expert around here, so I don't pay much attention to what he does to the computers, etc. Yes, dear, whatever you say dear. Dual core, 80 Gig, micro SD card reader...if he wants me to use it, I trust that it's good. He actually told me that he bought extra licenses for Win 7, so we could install it on my computer, but I am not a fan of how Win 7 programs are organized differently from their older versions. (I may be thinking of 2010 Office Suite and just lumping that in with 7). So, I told him maybe in two years I'd upgrade to 7. For now I'll just transfer the files between two computers with a flash drive.
I KNEW this was an ICS thing. Even though I had the phone for less than a month before the update and didn't remember plugging it into the computer before then. My phone does prompt file transfer for MTP and whatever acronym they use for pictures. And I'm like, fine, I'll deal with that, but when I try to use the programs suggested to transfer files, the programs freeze or don't recognize the phone as a device plugged in. It's a crapshoot. And I figure if they went through all the trouble of doing this media/photo file transfer thing for XP, why didn't they just use a little more effort to make the SD card contents visible?
So...unless a third party develops something that will provide SD card content viewing and editing, I will just go the long route and move files from my PC to a flash drive to the Win 7 PC to the phone.

Writing to externalSD...

I'm having issues that I cannot be sure if its affected by Googles dropped support of writing to externalSD or not.
When I hook my phone up to the laptop via USB I do this to transfer music to the micro externalSD, which is 64GB card, into my Music folder. The first thing I do is make a new folder on it to label the folder by band name. When I do that it just sits there idling and won't change names from New Folder to a band name folder. Same thing happened when I tested another way by just dropping a music file on it. It just acts busy and never processes the transfer.
The only way I've gotten it to work was taking the micro externalSD card out of the slot of the phone and putting it into the bigger card then insert it into the laptop and do my work that way. It works that way but I can't tell if its that KitKat issue that's affecting it or its something else.
Has anybody been transferring files via USB or doing what I do?

If you use the Samsung Kies application, it works. At least it works for me using Kies. Haven't tried just using the file explorer.
The external SD restriction is only from within the OS itself. It only affects third-party file managers (or any app trying to modify files on the external sd). Doing anything on a computer should work. Something is wrong with your phone.
I've had this happen when my devices' OS gets messed up. Factory reset (or reflash when I was using custom roms) usually fixes it. I don't know the details, but something with the way the phone presents its storage to the computer gets messed up.

Yeah and file transfers will slow to 0kb/s and eventually (after a long time of waiting) the computer will say something about the device not being found. Right?
This is what I was saying. As long as you aren't running a custom rom (which you can't on the n910a), then a factory reset SHOULD fix it.

This is what I was saying. As long as you aren't running a custom rom (which you can't on the n910a), then a factory reset SHOULD fix it.

Yeah, I just keep my phone awake though, not really interested in factory reset, lol, maybe the op will though, I just don't transfer enough stuff

Sorry, thought you WERE the OP. Lol
Didn't realize you were a different person.
If it works for you then do what you're doing. If it gets worse or something, try my suggestion though. It should fix it, but yeah, factory resets can be annoying.

Yeah titanium backup would make it a bit nicer, an icloud style backup would be a godsend
I'm the OP of this thread, lol. Anyways. Did a couple things to test out ideas.
One... Kies... I hate it. Sorry asjshenry. Thanks for the advice though.
Two... tried a different Samsung USB. Same issue.
Three... I may have done something wrong last time with this but when I dragged and dropped a file into the micro externalSD via USB it worked fine. No idling or freeze up. I stated it did this the first time I tested it but I may have done something different than I thought I did.
Four... while still using a different USB I went ahead and tried to create a folder and name it. It just hung there idling.
I guess my last resort is factory reset. I'd like to think it isn't the phone but maybe Windows 8.1 just not playing nicely with the Note 4. A lot of weird things have happened on 8.1 including my Bluetooth mouse not working anymore 4 days after I bought it. It stopped working after Windows pushed an update. Not really sure but I have noticed odd behaviors from 8.1.
I'll try factory reset tomorrow and report back. If its the same issue still then its got to be something with Windows.
OK so I finally got around to factory reset and tried again. Still having same issues. There must be some kind of syncing error with Windows 8.1 or something. I don't get how it will allow me to drop a file in (i.e. a song) without issues but it will not allow me to create a folder and name it.
Only way I can do this is by taking out the micro SD card and put it in the bigger card and then into the laptop.
It gets annoying doing it that way because of having to take the case off then back door then the card and then put everything back together again.

Sorry reset didn't work. I agree, it might be Windows 8. I'm still on 7, so can't any further (if there is something that can be done).

Windows 8.1 does this to my note 4 and S3, it's a Windows issue not your phone

I have no idea, I avoid it by creating the folders on the computer and droping them on the SD card

It must be a syncing issue then. I've been trying to track down similar issues but haven't found anything I was looking for. Have you noticed that the more 8.1 gets updated the more there are problems? I'll keep looking till I find what the issue is.

Additional updates haven't worsened or fixed the problem for me, also forgot to mention that the size of the card plays no effect on solving the issue I've tested it on a 32gb and a 128gb card. Let me know if you come up with a fix

If you have 2 laptops or PC could you test this problem on a different one and see if the problem persist? I actually have 2 laptops but the screen on the older one got fried so I have no way or seeing if its a persisting problem.
I will also make some time tomorrow and see if I can speak to a geek squad rep or Microsoft rep online and see if they have any suggestions. I'll have to speak to them about other problems that I see coming up with each updates they push out too.
If I can't get anywhere with fixing all these problems then I will be converting the laptop fully to a Linux OS of my choice. I'm not liking anything at all with windows 8.1 and this laptop is barely a year old.
Also its interesting that you said you had the same issue with the S3. I have the S3 too here before I got the Note 4. I didn't see this problem with the S3 on this laptop and it has been awhile since I had the S3 hooked up to that laptop to transfer music over. That's what is leading me to think that an update broke stuff.
I'll update this tomorrow if I get anywhere.

Sorry it took so long to reply, I took the 5.0.1 update recently and tried creating and renaming a folder on my note 4 using my windows 8.1 machine, I got the same result, folder was created but windows explorer hung and crashed during renaming the folder. I tried it again on my windows 7 machine and it successfully created and renamed the folder without any hiccups. also its worth to mention that i do not have usb debugging enabled, and every time I connect my phone to the windows 8.1 machine I get a usb connected sound and then a second later I get a usb disconnected sound and then the windows explorer window showing my phone and external SD

Thank you. That confirms my suspicion that it is within Windows 8.1. Debugging is not needed for anything.
I had to dig deep to figure out the problem, and according to an article some updates plus components become corrupted without our knowledge. Only way we know something is wrong is one thing after another stops working (i.e. my Bluetooth mouse, writing to external SD, etc).
There is a fix for it as long as it can complete it thoroughly. If not then a fresh install of 8.1 is your only last resort.
This is what I did from this link...
http://www.eightforums.com/3407-sfc-scannow-command-run-windows-8-a.html
Right click on command prompt to grant Administration rights. Click ok. Command prompt will open. Run this...
sfc /scannow
Wait for it to fully scan.
Mine said it couldn't fix all problems. I had to go to Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /Restore health link...
http://www.eightforums.com/26512-dism-fixing-component-store-corruption-windows-8-a-8.html
This will take awhile and look like its hung up at 20% but let it finish.
My results were...
Error: 0x800f0906
The source files could not be downloaded. Use the "source" option to specify the location of the files that are required to restore the feature. For more information on specifying a source location, see http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=243007
Had to go to that link and was lost on what to do. So I read through the forums for similar error code by others and the author recommended to do a refresh of Windows or do a complete reinstall of Windows to correct the problem and run sfc /scannow to confirm all is good after reinstallation.
This leads me to believe several updates became corrupted and a lack of a component store. I have no clue how that broke and it's all on Microsoft for that mess.
My last resort is now to reinstall a fresh copy of Windows 8.1 to correct all issues. It's going to be a pain in the are with all that stuff I have saved on the laptop and backing up everything.
Check out those links and run them to see if your stuff gets corrected. You may have better luck than I did and if you do then reboot after all that and test the external SD issue.

I ran sfc /scannow and it failed verification and didn't fix anything, so then i ran dism as you said however I used a bat file I had instead, and it fixed whatever sfc was complaining about. If you want to try it copy this into a notepad and save it as a .bat file and run as admin
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup
pause
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
pause
SFC /scannow
pause
since sfc passed I ran windows update and took all the important and optional updates, restarted and ran sfc again and it passed again. I plugged in my phone and created a folder and tried to rename it and as always explorer hangs again, and crashes, without unplugging my phone I go back to where I created the folder and tried to rename it and it works, problem is if you unplug, explorer will hang and crash first every time before working, also this method doesn't always work, for example sometimes external sd disappears from the list, other times when you click on it, it brings you into phone sd instead of external, and lastly another bug I've noticed is that the language changes after a crash on the list of available memory, there were a couple of instances where everything was replaced with Chinese or Japanese characters. I hope this was helpful but I doubt this problem could be fixed, unless windows 10 fixes it we're going to have to deal with it
